Adventures in Aperture Episode 1: Image Roundtrip

As discussed here on the Aperture discussion boards, Frank noticed damage to shadow areas on exported images from Aperture.
He offered up the NEF that he used in his thread.
There were several discussions on whether or not the steps take were the same.
I decided to record my steps in a desktop video capture and call them "Adventures in Aperture".
Steps
1. Import NEF Aperture
-NO ADJUSTMENTS MADE
2. Export as full sized JPG
-Black point compensation setting did not matter
3. Import that JPG into Aperture
4. Compare the two images(NEF and JPG) in Aperture
5. Conclusion is that there is blocking and noise in the shadow areas.
Why can we not complete this image roundtrip?
Here is a link to my desktop video capture of me running the test with voice over:
http://homepage.mac.com/john.rayl/iMovieTheater3.html
Let me know what you think of the test and results.

Lets take the scenic route on this roundtrip.
1. Import RAW Nef to Aperture
--MAKE NO ADJUSTMENTS
2. Open in external editor (i.e. CS2)
--MAKE NO CHANGES in CS2, however you must do something like create a duplicate of the background and then delete it so CS2 will have a reason for you to Save it, otherwise the "Save" choice stays greyed out.
3. Export that new version that just came back from CS2, export as a JPG.
4. Import the JPG from step three into Aperture
5. Loupe tool reveals that both the original RAW file AND this new JPG(from step 3) look EXACTLY THE SAME!!

  • How to make Photoshop save Aperture imported JPEG images as JPEGs

Recently, I upgraded from Photoshop CS 5 to CS 5.1.
My point and shoot cameras record in JPEG format. Often, I'll import those photos into Aperture and then tweak them in Photoshop using the Edit in External Editor command. My preferences for the external editor in Aperture were set to 8-bit, Photoshop
With Photoshop CS 5, I would edit the photo and choose Save and the edited photo would be saved back to Aperture as a new version, in a JPEG format.
Now, using Photoshop CS 5.1, when the imported image from Aperture is converted into a PSD file and when I save back to Aperture, I end up with a PSD file.
How can I revert to how it was before? JPEG image in Aperture, opened in external editor Photoshop as a JPEG, edited in Photoshop, then saved back to Aperture as a new version JPEG?
(Though this question is approached in this forum, a solution to my question is never found as each dicussion ends up going off-topic from the original question)

Any further ideas from anyone who's experienced trying to open a JPEG from Aperture in Photoshop as a JPEG?
Like I said before, you cannot open a jpeg as a jpeg, the file must be decompressed to open in PS or in Aperture, and that has always been the case.
I do not know how it used to work, but I tested and you are correct that with PS 12.1 and with Aperture 3.2.2 a JPEG sent to open in external editor (PS) is opened into your choice of lossless format and then goes back to Aperture in the lossless format you chose.
IMO this is the way it should be, because every save into JPEG loses image data, so such saves should be limited to the final export, in this case when the image actually leaves Aperture. If the file was compressed as a JPEG  when leaving PS, decompressed and edited in Aperture, then compressed again to export as JPEG from Aperture, unnecessary additional image data loss would occur.
It is always better to save the application of lossy compression until the very last step in a workflow because other usages (printing, for instance) may occur before applying the lossy compression.

  • APERTURE: Small preview images do not show the changes.

    excuse my lousy english...
    Problem with Aperture:
Small preview images do not show the changes.
I use Aperture 3 since August 2010. By November and 10 projects later it ran normally.
Since the project 11 are in the preview images shown (on the bottom bar in the shared representation) and in the pictures in the books no adjustments. I change for example a picture in b / w it remains in the small preview images bunt even though the great View Erbild s / w is. Even in the books then the famous picture colorful and even grobpixelig.
This is of course in the processing of multiple images per project huntert pretty annoying to have no overview of processed images ...:-(
I had a third installed for books and not as close a relationship.
Does anyone have similar experience or know someone how can I fix this?
    Thanks for reading!
    Lokoe

    Lokoe,
    To make sure we understand:
I change for example a picture in b / w it remains in the small preview images bunt even though the *great View Erbild s / w is*.
I am not sure what "s/w" is, but I think you mean:
"I change picture to black and white and the small preview images remain *in color* even though the *big picture in the Viewer* is in B/W."
Even in the books then the famous picture colorful and even grobpixelig.
"In the books the selected picture is colorful and even ???"
"Grobpixelig" -> "grosspixelig" -> "Looks like big pixels???" Not quite sure of the translation. It's been 15 years since I spoke Deutsch!

  • Aperture not seeing images in camera

I have two copies of Aperture: one on my MBPro and one on a recently acquired iMac 2.4GHz.
Aperture on the iMac does not see the images on the camera, although recognises that the camera has been attached. The images are visible in iPhoto.
On the MBP, Aperture sees the images on the memory card of my Nikon D70 and imports without problem.
Any ideas why (or what I have missed) this might be happening. The two copies of Aperture are not running at the same time.

I actually do have one but I wanted to try without. When I later tried with the card reader (that was after having the version on the MBP recognise and import the images) nothing happened at first, although it identified the card as a Nikon D70s; but when I tried the Import icon, that worked. A bit less smooth than I was expecting.

  • Editing in PS CS 5 / re-save edited version back to Aperture problems with image display

I use Aperture and send images into CS 5 but since latest Aperture update the images don't always display the adjusted version.  A re-start of Aperture is required. Any suggestions appreciated.  Never had any issues before.

If you are running AP 3.2.3, you may be experiencing a known issue:

We are waiting on a fix from Apple.

  • Aperture Destroying Raw Images!?

There are countless posts or threads about this particular issue but none have seemed to garner much concern. These threads all seem to mention their cameras. I have found 2 to 3 different brands including NIKON, CANON, PENTAX. So, I have concluded from this... ITS NOT THE CAMERA!!! It is something in Apertoys Raw capabilities.
Raw images are having some sort of "PRESET" added to them after import. What is causing this? How can it be fixed, and why has apple not responded to this?
I have seen many helpful responses to some of these threads but nothing close to an answer other than maybe countless hours of troubleshooting. Although this seems to be a fantastic place for helpful individuals and I am grateful for Apple giving us this forum, one question still looms?
This is directed to Apple and Aperture engineers: How do I know as a consumer, that or if you people whom wrote this software, acknowledge that there is a flaw or possible bug that you are aware of that NEEDS attention? The software is fairly inexpensive when you compare it to my financial losses while using it!
That being said: Anyone have any helpfull suggestions?

Thank you CalxOddity! This is occurring with two of my cameras D70 and D5000. This is an exact example of what is happening in kb8wfh's thread. I am referencing this thread because of the utube video. He is shooting with a Pentax but this is down to the T what I am experiencing. I have No presets applied. Thank you in advance!
I have had a huge issue since upgrading to 3.3.2 and the upgrade to the RAW decoder. I shoot Pentax platforms (K-7, K-200 & K-x). I only shoot RAW and this problem NEVER happened before the Aperture update/RAW update. I stop the automatic processing, otherwise, it goes through each photo and darkens and shift the colors significantly. If I open a previous library (ones I created even years ago) it will preprocess the master images AND all the subsequent versions - Thus I refuse to even open my old libraries for Aperture ruining my work.
Here is a brief view of exactly what it is doing:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VTMedUrhVo&feature=share&list=UU2vsk3mVVJnIJ83v1 rFo7aw
Also, when Aperture "Processes" the image, it is clear it that it as a JPG master/original image. The data simply isn't there anymore to use adjustments like "recovery." When you try and do so, it just dulls/grays The entire image instead of adjusting the highlights.
I need to know where I can get previous version of the RAW engine and install it into Aperture. How can this be done?
Apple really screw this thing up...infuriating since it was working just fine before. My livelihood is on hold because the app I use and am bound to has turned form a pro tool to one of the iToy applications

  • Why won't aperture arrange my images by name?

I loaded pics from my camera into Aperture and the images are all jumbled.  There is no order to them even though the previously loaded images (in the same library) are still in alphanumeric order (by name).

    What sorting have you chosen?

  • Raw Files Appear Deleted or Corrupted Suddenly in Aperture with Unsupported Image Format Error

I have been using Aperture 3, latest update, for the past year. Today, I tried to import new raw files from my new Sony RX1r and, as far as I can see, all raw files in Aperture give the "Unsupported Image Format" and alert symbol in the library where not only new files should be, but also ALL PREVIOUS RAW FILES. These files do no even show up as existing in the iPhoto Library.
This is, needless to say, distressing, as hundreds and hundreds of photos seem lost. Also, the files show a reduced pixel size and file sizes all go to .5 Mb. Some of the photos seemed to show up initially and look fine until I tried to open them, then they all either disappear or show the Unsupported Image Format instead of the opened file. I have tried rebuilding the iPhoto library, but no help.
I have looked in these discussions and see similar problems with Aperture. Perhaps, Apple has not made an update for the RX1r from the RX1 for raw files, but why should all older raw files now be corrupted, especially those recently made with my Olympus OM-D? Had no problem with Aperture until this disaster.
    Please help.
    William

Just an update. Restarted computer and attempted rebuilds of iPhoto library a couple more times and finally files and photos mostly recovered, except for those I had tried to open. Aperture seems to have a problem, or a host of them, dealing with RAW files, and there is no update yet for the Sony RX1R for Aperture or iPhoto. Lightroom 5, on the other hand, seems to work great with these files directly, so that will be where all photos go for now. Will iPhoto and Aperture just become old archives? It is so infuriating that Apple does not allow for simple importing and exporting compatibility with such an excellent program as Lightroom 5 just to protect their somewhat poorly supported Aperture. I've been a staunch Apple supporter and user since the 80's, but having more doubts about the direction this company is taking.

  • Aperture thinks missing images are duplicates

I am running Aperture 3.4.3 on Mountain Lion on a 17" Macbook Pro.
Aperture crashed while importing pictures from an SD card.  When I try to start the import again I have the following problems:
When 'Do not import duplicates' is checked.  It will not list the pictures that previously attempted an import but are not in the library.
When 'Do not import duplicates' is unchecked, I see all the pictures on the card (including those that are missing).
I do not want to import all pictures and then go through the library to figure out which ones are copies and manually remove them.  There are hundreds of pictures on the card.
I have tried holding command-option and have rebuilt both the database and the library.  This does not change anything.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried holding command-option and have rebuilt both the database and the library.  This does not change anything.
The partially imported images must be somewhere in the Aperture library. Have you looked into the Aperture Trash or checked if they are somewhere in a "Recovered Project"?

  • My title and description info on my iPhoto images do not import to Aperture with the image

  • Aperture messing up images with 30 inch external display.

I have a macbook pro with 128MB video ram and 4GB ram. I just purchased a 30 inch display which I am using externally and have noticed that aperture now regularly locks up and screws up images and the display. Picture here
I have aperture using the full screen and then when I start something like cropping, as I move the box around it starts to mess up the picture as per the attached image. If I then go to other pictures and come back to it, it will still be in the same state. Fortunately, if I quit the program and restart aperture, the image will be ok.
If I shrink the window back down it would appear to behave normally. I have also restored aperture to before one particularly bad lock up that brought my whole system down.
Has anyone else experienced this behaviour?

I have not experienced this exact issue but I have had issues with graphics cards/drivers and the 30" displays in the past. The cure has always been an apple update for the cases that I have experienced. That being said 128 M is a relatively small amount of VRAM for Aperture + 30" Cinema. I would expect performance issues for sure and it maybe contributing to what you are seeing.

  • Aperture Import: Original images saved outside library since upgrade

Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard and Aperture 2.1.4 all my images were saved in the Aperture library. I upgraded to OS X 10.6 and to Aperture 2.1.4 at the same time.
Aperture still saves the previews and the thumbnails in the library, but it saves the originals in the pictures folder, even if I add photos to projects that were created before the upgrade. In the Aperture preferences I can only find a setting for the location of the library, but not a setting to indicate that the originals should be stored somewhere else. Where can I find the setting to indicate where the original files should be stored?
The files are stored using the pattern defined under presets / folder naming. If I can't resolve the issue of the files not being stored in the library, then I will probably set my folder naming preset to "Custom name (Aperture) / Folder name / Project name". Is there a way to update older projects to move the originals out of the library to this folder structure?
    Thanks,
    Jasper

On the right-hand side of the import dialog, where it asks you where o store the images.

  • Aperture 3 - Multiple Image Selection Bug?

I am experiencing an issue within Aperture (v3.0.3) where by from a project folder containing a large number of photos, I rate the ones I wish to keep (typically 3 * and above) and these are all automatically selected for an album.
Whilst this smart album shows the correct number of images, If I use these as the basis for a book or even a static album, a larger number of images (seems to include any within a series) appear.
    Am I using Aperture incorrectly?
Why does it show the correct number of images within the smart album, but copying everything shows a higher number within a book?
It also doesn't seem possible to show just a subset of photos within a book, so I have to get the number correct to save having to go through all photos for the book selection.
Is this a bug? It certainly appears to be a bug with the way in which this is working.
    Thanks for your feedback...

    Thanks for the response Kirby.
Essentially when I refer to 'series' I am talking about Aperture's stacks (I used the wrong phrase originally).
If I have a stack of 10 photos, however only a single one has been rated as 3 star or above (my criteria for being selected into the smart album and/or book), it seems that all 10 photos would appear in the books' photo selection.
This means that from one photo project where approximately 1800 photos were taken, I had rated around 200 of these as 3 star and above, which is the number of photos that correctly appears in the smart album.
If I then 'select all' from the smart album and use these as the basis for a book, I would expect to see only the 200 photos for selection within the book, however I see nearly 800 photos which is the total number of photos within the stacks visible in the smart album (whether photos are visible and rated sufficiently or not).
It's not possible to change the view of photos for the book selection process, so it appears to only list those photos you have chosen, however I see many photos I didn't "choose"...
Does this make it any clearer?
    Thanks

  • Aperture to [Original images | Lightroom]?

Just manged to delete the long version of this post so I'll keep it short:
    - Aperture doesn't support my cameras RAW files.
    - I have a copy of all my images in the filesystem external to Aperture's database. (my trust of db's not getting corrupt is low)
    - All my metadata is stored in Apertures database.
I need to be able to get my metadata out of the database and back into the orginal files.
Is there a script that can do this based on image name? I.e., take the metadata from IMG_23456 in aperture and stick it into the file named IMG_23456? Or that can stick it into lightroom, again keyed by image name (since lightroom can use the original files this would work as well.)
Or, failing that, is it feasable to export each album from aperture to disc and have it keep all the meta data? I could then replace the originals with the exported versions. (Though doing that by hand for several hundred albums won't be fun, and I'll have to make sure not to accidently chuck any of my video clips since I don't (and can't) have those in aperture.)
Any other ways people can think of to get the metadata out of aperture?
    Thanks for any help!

In the "folders" pane, right-click on the folder you see and select "show parent folder". Repeat as needed.

  • Aperture 3.03 - images are not automatically set to a GPS location

    Hi everyone!
First of all I have to apologize because I don't know the English terms for the Aperture functions, but I am using the German version.
I currently have a big problem by tagging my images automatically to a GPS track.
I can import the track from a GPS file generated with a Garmin eTrex H. I see the track - the purple line of the track. If I go over the line I see the date and time of the point i am over.
If I place an image over a point of the line, I am asked if the other images should be located too. If I answer to do so, just the image I placed is set to the GPS position. No other image! But this was working already some weeks ago!
I checked everything the date and time of the GPS, date and time of the images. But it still does not work.
Does anybody have an hint for me? Is there a problem with 3.03?
    Any help is welcome.
    Thanks a lot!
    Stefan.

    Hi villem!
Thanks a lot for the info! I think you are right. All tracks and images are done after the daylight saving time switch. I was used to use HoudahGeo for geotaggging before I was using A3. I updated HoudahGeo and it turns out, that everything was working fine.
I think the problem was, that the GPS turns to daylight saving time automatically but the camera wasn't. So there was two different time zones. I set the time in the camera now. I will see if this helps.
I also tired to set the time zone of the track in A3 but this didn't help! Is there any other workaround for this bug?
Thanks a lot for your help! I was trying this for days now!
    Stefan.
