Age of Empires II on iMac G3

I have a Lime iMac G3 with a 333 MHZ, 64 MB RAM, 6 GB Hard Drive, only 4 GBs is left, and Mac OS 9.2.2.
I bought Age of Empires II for mac and the system requirements is 233 MHZ Processor, 2 MB VRAM graphics card, Mac OS 8.6 or higher, 32 MB RAM, 500 MBs of Hard Disk. So I thought buying this, I have double the RAM, almost double the required processor speed, and more than enough Hard Disk space. It runs, but I need to turn on virtual memory and RAM disk under the Memory options, and AOE II runs very slowly. Is there any way I can make it run faster without buying more RAM?

You could try setting up a custom configuration using Extensions Manager
where you'd be using the basic extensions and control panels for the system
and graphics support, but shut off all other parts unnecessary for your app
(the game) and the basic system.
This could be very tricky; and you'd need to start by duplicating the full
set (and then renaming the duplicate before changing it; so you could
revert to the original extensions/control panels for other use) and it can
be a real chore.
Short of really upgrading an older machine, or getting one with the extra
resources to run the system and at least one major application or game
besides, even with the basic RAM and small HDD your early iMac has,
it will be a struggle. OS8.6 requires less RAM to run, and the more work
a system is expected to do, even behind the scenes, the slower it runs.
OS 9.2.2 needs VM turned on to handle your game and the base system.
Ideally, on just the RAM side, you'd fix the issue by adding 128+MB in a
RAM chip. But the model iMac you have may be one of the harder ones
to upgrade. A few were hard and others just more difficult.
Another avenue of upgrade is in the hard disk drive; more free space and
a faster spin rate effect available virtual memory and the speed at which
the system can draw this VM from the space it uses on the HDD for VM.
Essentially, the read/write speed of the hard drive and the fullness of it,
and [a lack of] a significant data buffer in the drive, makes it slow or fast.
An upgrade of these older models would include larger HDD + RAM.

  • Questionable graphics problem on Macbook Pro 13" in Age of Empires III, SOS

    Hey!
I was playing Age of Empires III today. I set the settings so that I got between 30-40 fps in FRAPS. Everything was running smoothly accept one really annoying thing. Whenn I scroll over the map, the picture kinda lags, it stops and jumps. But the FPS is stable at 30-40. So I tried to lower the graphics. Got 70-80 fps, but still the same lag. What problem can this be

I've played it for about an hour each stretch (more would make me feel guilty) graphics set at default high and I noticed a bit of heat but nothing out of the ordinary.
I have installed the update. No issues.
Let me know if you have other questions.
(could you please mark that my post as helpful? I could use the points. Thanks!)

  • [SOLVED] Trouble With Age of Empires 2 / Conquerors in Wine

As the title indicates I'm trying to install and run Age of Empires 2 and the expansion Conquerors, with Wine. Looks like it should work: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p … n&iId=4184
So first I installed wine and the video driver like this...
    pacman -Sy wine wine_gecko lib32-intel-dri
Then, for each iso I mounted it to a new folder and ran the install file on the image with wine. Here's how I mounted each iso...
    mount -o loop aoe.iso /mnt/mydisk
Installation of both AOE2 and the Conquerors seemed to work fine. But then when I attempted to play the game from the installation menu, popping up a "Program Error" that "the program age2_x1.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close." If I run AOCSETUP.EXE from the mounted iso right now, the main menu (with options "Play", "Add/Remove", "Web Connection", and "Register online") shows up but clicking "play" results in the same error. I've tried removing the dpwsockx.dll file that WineHQ mentions but it makes no difference.
I also tried loading wine with the option for Intel graphics, but had the same error as well as the following error in the console...

Are you on x86_64? Might wanna run WINEARCH=win32 winecfg (wiki entry for winearch). WINE works with the video drivers that you use for xorg not sure if you really need to specify that intel-dri driver.
Another thing that works quite well for me is make sure the current working directory is the game directory, then use wine to run the .exe. I recently installed Anachronox and if I try to launch it from outside the game directory i get missing dll errors also, even though the dlls are present in the game directory.
Also did you follow the following How-To steps on the WINE game page?
The game must be set to Windows 2000 compatibility. (seems to play equally well with XP mode too, though.)
This game requires a NoCD patch to run. (you can play using aocsetup.exe from the cd, if you can’t afford to NoCD)
If the game wont start (and wine hasn’t hang up(pkill wine && pkill exe)), either remove dpwsockx.dll from your system32 folder or follow the steps for multi-player below. ¹

  • Can I play Age of Empires, Command and Conquer & COD4 in Mac

I want to buy a MacBook Pro 13" with its base configurations having Intel HD 3000 graphics. Will this support the games I mentioned like
Age of Empires, Command and Conquer, COD4 & Fifa2011.

well intel hd 3000 is just a very basic DISPLAY unit, it wouldnt be taken into consideration when purchasing computers becuz wat matters is the GRAPHIC PROCESSING UNIT, in this case, the new macbook pro come with awesome amd radeon hd series, which is pretty darn good. however, i would doubt that 13 inch would satisfy ur gaming needs becuz face it, 13 inch is kinda small to play epic games

  • Bad Issue playing Age of Empires III

    Hi everyone,
I have a Pre february 08 MBP which I recently upgraded to Leopard. The computer fits all the minimum and recommended system requirements for Age of Empires III. The game runs fine with the graphics maxed out, Until, I started to play the maps that have bodies of water on them as well as the campaign game mode. At this point, the game and my computer freezes as little as 5 mins into playing. I cannot force quit and have to manually shut the computer down by holding down the power button for 5 secs. I don't understand what could be causing this. I have tried playing with the graphics to a minimum and it still happens. Also I have tried to play the multiplayer mode with gameranger but the client won't even load, it encounters a problem and has to be closed.
I thought that these were windows problems, It is extremely annoying that this is happening so soon into switching from windows to Apple.
    Any help would be amazing!
    Thanks in advance,
    Charlie

Hello me again - i found this site: http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/archives/mar07/030807.html
    with these steps...
    <snip>
Hi Mike, I heard back from MacSoft about the Age of Empires III problem. They confirmed that it's a problem with the QT7.1.5 update on 10.3.9. They said that they're working on a fix, and gave me a workaround to get it going. I noticed later that they also posted it on their support site: http://www.destineerstudios.com/support/aoe3.html
    " Problems with Quicktime 7.1.5 and OS X 10.3.9
A recent update to Quicktime from Apple has prevented Age of Empires III from starting up on systems running OS X 10.3.9. We are currently working on an update that addresses this issue, but the instructions below will allow you to play Age of Empires III on your Macintosh in the meantime.
    1. Locate the Age of Empires III program on your computer. 2 . Control-click or Right Click on the Age of Empires III icon and select "Show Package Contents," then open up the "Contents" folder, then "Resources," "GameData," then finally the "avi" folder.
    3. Go to the File Menu and select "New Folder."
    4. Drag all of the files in the "avi" folder into the folder you created.
    5. Close all of the windows and Start Age of Empires III.
Unfortunately, you will not be able to see the end of Act Movies in game until we have an update for Age of Empires III. However, it is possible to watch the movies if you navigate to the folder that you have created in the steps above. It will be necessary to drag the movies back into the "avi" folder after we have an update for the game that addresses this issue.
    Thanks
    -Brian

  • Why is my mac shutting down in middle of my age of empires 3 game. did not do this until 10.6.8 everything including the game is updated.

when i play age of empires 3 my mac shuts down for no apparent reason. Any suggestions?  10.6.8 ; 2.8 ghz; i dont know how to find any other info. This did not start until i purchased and installed snow leopard. please help me!

Do an SMC reset, which can fix problems with the system randomly shutting down:
    Shut down the computer.
    Unplug the computer's power cord.
    Wait fifteen seconds.
    Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • Is there any way to install age of empires 2 for mac onto macbook pro?

I recently acquired the age of empires 2 for mac game and tried to install it but it doesn't seem to read it. I have a 13" macbook pro (10.9.4 mavericks). Is there any way I could install and play this game on my laptop?

Your post somehow found its way to a little-viewed forum for Apple hardware made before 1998. I have asked the Hosts to move you to a more active and appropriate forum for your product.

  • Age of Empire 1 and 2 don't run on P100-350

I can't run Age Of Empire I or II on a P100-350 under Win XP.
AOE I runs only in 640x480.
AOE II does not run at all. I get a message about directX not loaded.
Anyone already experienced that problem ?

My desktop has a P4 2ghz 1gig ram and a Radeon 9600xt AGP card, and I still have problems playing AOE. These are very power hungry games believe it or not, and can only really be played well on big systems at high res. You should still be able to play them though on your notebook, but make sure your drivers are up to date and try setting up windows and your graphics for performance. You wont get anything spectacular but at low res and low detail the games should be playable.

  • How to play multiplayer Age of Empires 2

I just got Age of Empires 2 for my Mac the other day and now I want to play multiplayer with another mac and a PC. But I can't seem to figure out how.
When I had a PC, I used to use LAN Connection but that's not even an option here on the mac version.
My mac tried hosting, the other mac did and so did the PC. But whenever I tried to get into a game via IP address it says "unable to locate game" and when the other mac tries is just keeps loading forever and nothing happens on the PC. I'm pretty sure that the 2 macs are in a network but the PC is not, but they're all in the same house.
So how do I play multiplayer games with two other people? I have no clue.....
    --Thanks.

    Hi Pop7,
although I had played AOE II and AOE III on my PC (when I had one), I never tried out multiplayer gaming.
But one thing is certain: AOE II on Mac and AOE II on PC are not compatible in terms of multiplayer. They just don't cooperate.
This goes for the whole Ago Of... series.
Who is to blame for this, I don't know (maybe Microsoft or Ensemble Studios).
    Sorry

  • Re: Tecra M2 - Ages of empires II - all fonctionalities ?

    Hello,
I have a microsoft game called "ages of empire II"
All is working well, but a few functionalities are "out".
For miltary units, I haven't the choice of their attitudes (stance, defense, attack ...) I don't see the "icons", and the shortcuts don't work.
I have Window's XP spec3 and I have loaded the last Direct X.
For checking my own game, I have loaded a trial version from microsoft, and I have the same problem.
I have also a very old Toshiba satellite pro, and on this old ones everything is working !
Do you know if Microsoft has a forum on this kind of problem ?
    Thanks

Thanks for your idea, but it does not work. I couldn't even load the patch (it answers: not commercial package).
In fact, I have just transferred the file "age of empires" from the "program file" of my old Toshiba. I guess I should also transfer some ".dll" from the file "Windows" or from some other place. But I don't know "which" from "where" (I am a beginner)
There are a lot of .dll and other curious files in my old Toshiba coming from various programs I loaded in the past and also because it was working with "Windows 98"; Do you think that if I load them all (blindly), there will be no problems after ?
(it does a tremendous number of .dll, and others files about every where in "windows""apps ..." I have already tried once and sometimes the machine answer "adding file may cause Windows instable", and I stopped and come back (coward !).; Perhaps I should continue, if I eliminate these cases of instability, logically it may work. OK ?)
nb1: Should I do that only for two files: Windows/system and Windows/system32 ? I don't get messages of instability when I upload old files in these.
nb2: I suppose perhaps there is something to do with "registeries keys", but I don't know how to do. I have not tried to upload registeries keys. Should do I ?

  • I downloaded Mavericks while I had an Age of Empires disk inserted; before installing, I saw a notice that Age of Empires won't run with Mavericks so I did not install, but now, using every trick I know the disk will not eject.  Advice?t

Why won't Age of Empires disk not eject after downloading but not installin Mavericks?

here is pretty much every option:
    Force eject a stuck cd/dvd
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
If you are running a virtual machine, e.g. VMFusion, ensure that the CD is disconnected from the virtual machine. This will sometimes allow the CD to now show up in Mac OS X.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
If you have Toast Titanium installed on your computer, choose EJECT DISC from the menubar.
Sometimes you can successfully use the eject disc button in iTunes even if the disc is not visible to the Finder
Open Disc utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.
