Yes, you can use the Airport Extreme as a repeater or a network Extender. When you're setting it up with the Airport utility software, simply put it into repeater mode. The Airport Extreme has a range of at least 250 meters, which is about 820 feet, which is pretty impressive!

  • I am experiencing network failures with my Airport Extremes: the main router is a 2nd Gen, the extension a 5th Gen. The 5th Gen keeps on losing connection with the main router. Any ideas why?

I am experiencing network failures with my Airport Extremes: the main router is a 2nd Gen, the extension a 5th Gen.
The 5th Gen keeps on losing connection with the main router and thus with the internet.
    Any ideas why?

Is the second Extreme configured to "extend" the network created by the first? If so its position must be such that it has a strong wireless connection to the first Extreme. If it is at the limits of the first one's wireless range its connection will be tenuous. Place them closer together and determine if that makes a difference.

  • How do I setup Airport Extreme to repeat my BT router wireless signal?

I have a BT router and want to setup 3 x airport Express to repeat the signal wirelessly around the house.
They all seem fine with steady green lights but are not repeating the wifi so I get very low (or no) signal strength even if I stand right next to it.
Do I have to have an Apple base station or will they work with a non-apple router?

Do I have to have an Apple base station or will they work with a non-apple router?
Unfortunately, the Apple routers will only "extend" or provide more wireless coverage using wireless only...if they are used with another Apple product.
If you added an AirPort Extreme to your BT router using an Ethernet connection, and then configured the Extreme to create a wireless network...the Express devices would be able to "extend" that network.

  • Airport Extreme as Repeater for FritzBox 3390

    Hello!
I want to enlarge my LAN and WLAN at home. In my LAN the connection to the internet is done with a Fritz!Box 3390.
Is it possible to connect a Fritz!Box 3390 as base station with an Apple Airport Extreme for instance as a WLAN repeater?
Is it possible to enlarge my LAN via ethernet cable with one certain IP address (e.g. 192.168.10.*) by connection with an Airport Extreme? And if so, must I use the WAN adapter or a LAN adapter of the Airport Extreme? For my devices I have the need of at least three additional LAN connections.
    Thanks for help,
    Michael

Apple has designed their AirPort routers to be compatible with other AirPort routers for the purpose of extending the network wirelessly.
So, it would be extremely unlikely that an AirPort router could extend the signal from your FritzBox router.
If you decide to try the AirPort Extreme, it would be a good idea to make sure that you can return the product if it does not work......since there is almost zero chance that it will work.

  • Airport extreme fritz repeater

  • Have Pixus and 3rd gen Airport extreme. Unable to replace with 5th gen airport extreme

I have Pixus and a 3rd generation Airport extreme . Unable to replace with 5th generation airport extreme. Problem?

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I assume that Pixus has provided you with a modem that provided an Ethernet connection to your 3rd Gen AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) ... correct? If so, then anytime you change networking hardware, it is a good idea to completely recycle power on all of the networking components.
    Please try the following:
Power-down the Pixus modem, AEBSn, and computer(s); leave them powered off for at least 10-15 minutes.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it sufficient time to initialize.
Power-up the AEBSn; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until its status light is a solid green. (Note: It may continue to flash amber. This is ok, as it may just require some additional configuration settings, like wireless security to attend to.)
    Power-up the computer(s).
Network clients connected to the AEBSn, either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the Pixus modem. Please post back your results.

  • How do you update the firmware on 1st Gen Airport Extreme in OSX Mountain Lion?

A friend gave me a old but never used 1st Gen Airport Extreme 802.11n WiFi Wireless Base Station.  I have a couple WiFi dead zones in my house and was told that I could daisy chain the Apple Airport Extreme off of my Verizon FIOS router/modem (802.11G) to fill in the dead spots.  During set up the Airport Utility told me that "This version of AirPort Utility requires this AirPort Extreme use firmware version 7.3.1 or later.  Go to AirPort Service and Support (link) for more information.
I updated the Airport Utility to the latest version (6.2) and I am still getting the same error message and no other option to update it's firmware.  Anyone know of a work around or am I fighting to losing battle here.  I tried to contact Apple support, but when I entered the serial number for the Base Station it said the product was over 5 years old and didn't qualify for support service program.

was told that I could daisy chain the Apple Airport Extreme off of my Verizon FIOS router/modem (802.11G) to fill in the dead spots
Not sure what you mean by "daisy chain".  The AirPort Extreme cannot "repeat" or "extend" the wireless signal from the FIOS router if you are planning to do this using wireless only.
You always need at least 2 Apple routers to be able to "extend a wireless network" using wireless only. The Apple routers would not be compatible with FIOS routers for this type of purpose.
If you can connect the AirPort Extreme to the FIOS router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, then the AirPOrt could be configured to provide more wireless signal coverage that way. If you cannot run the cable, it might be possible to use a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters to send a signal over the existing AC power lines in your home.
When you open AirPort Utility 6.x and a firmware update is available, there is usually a red number next to the AirPort Exreme icon. Click on the red number......or if it does not appear, click on the  AirPort Extreme icon and then hold down the option key on a Mac as you click on the Version number that is is displayed to see more "options".

  • Extend Airport Extreme Network via Ethernet to Airport Express

I am trying to extend a gen 4 Airport Extreme by hardwiring ethernet to a 2nd gen Airport Express and will add a second Airport Express if I can get the first one to work.  I have a large network with a 24 port switch and aiport utility 6.3.2 (most recent as of this date)
    First question:
When expanding my network using the hardwired Airport Express can I name the new network anything I want or should it be exactly the same as the Extreme Network.  I would prefer to name it differently so I can keep track of which network my devices are acturally joining but I will be happy simply to get this to work either way.
    Second question:
After repeated attempts to configure my hardwired Aiport Extreme, I get the following yellow status error:
    Yellow Internet Connetion
    Yellow No DNS Servers
    Yellow Conflicting DHCP Range
    Observation:
Many of the suggestions here and the link posted in a previous post are not based upon the most recent Airport Untility software so that may contribute to my lack of success so far.  I am using the most recent version.

Even though the express was hardwired to the extreme during the set up process it was choosing to "extend" the 5 ghz network which I have activated on my extreme.  I assume this is okay.  It seems to be.  It offered me no other option during the set up.
Both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands will be extended if the extending device supports dual bands.
I configured the express by plugging it directly into the LAN port of the Extreme.  Once configure, I plugged the express into my 24 port switch. It worked.
That's a good way to do things. If the Express works when connected directly to the Extreme, and doesn't when you connect it elsewhere on the network, then you know that you have a wiring or switch issue somewhere.
I choose to keep the express network name and base station name the same as those on the extreme.  They worked.  Since I really want to keep track of which network I am logged into, I later changed both the network name and the base station name for the express and it seems to all work under the new names.
Either will work, as long as you don't mind logging on and off of networks to switch. Most users prefer to have one "big" network. Then, they can walk a laptop from one area to another, stay on the same network and the Mac will automatically switch to pick up the strongest signal from the closest access point.
I activated the 5 ghz on the newly configured and newly named express.  It seems to work.
    As it should.
While configuing the express I got the error message metioned above a couple times.  I kept trying the same procdure with out changeing anything and eventually it worked.
I can't duplicate that issue, but glad that things worked after a few tries.
Since my AppleTV on the second floor has difficulties connecting with the extreme, I am thinking of plugging it in to the express directly.  How do you feel about this?  WOuld I be better off running another separate ethernet wire off the switch?
Always the best plan to connect any network devices using Ethernet if you can. The best networks are the ones with an Ethernet "backbone".  You can connect the Apple TV to the Express or the switch, whichever is easier. Personally, I prefer to connect devices to a switch if possible just to keep things simpler and make any troubleshooting easier.
This whole system with an extreme, 3 expresses, 3 appletvs, 12-14 cameras, a 24 port switch and up to 50 devices on the network at one time (computers, phones, ipads, etc, etc) works reasonably well considering the demands I put on it.
That's quite a home network. Glad that things are working. I am sure that you notice better wireless performance now with the two AirPort Express devices wired into the Ethernet backbone.
If we could get more users to set up their networks this way, most of the complaints that we get about slow wireless, intermittent connections, etc would go away.
It's not easy to run the Ethernet cable for some users, but I have yet to hear from the first user who ever regretted doing it.

  • Airport Extreme (latest generation) is rejecting password

My airport extreme is repeatedly rejecting passwords from a whole range of devices until it is rebooted. This is happening every couple of days. Any suggestions?
    Here's some info:
    Airport: 7.5.2
    Security: WPA2
    Channels: 48; 10
    Channel 10: RSSI = -81, Noise = -92, S/N = 10
    Channel 48: RSSI = -86, Noise = -92, S/N = 6
MAC access: timed (all day, every day using Mac addresses)
I've checked other local networks. They are all running on channel 1.
It's all Apple gear that's being dropped off the network.
    Thanks

    Most important is antenna design.

  • Airport Extreme 5GHz Channel not available

    Hi All
My Airport Extreme 5th Gen is now up and running.
The issue I have is that unless I give the 5GHz channel it's own name, my MacBook Pro will not pick it up - instead opting for the 2.4GHz channel. I know that distance and obstacles are a factor but in a test situation the MacBook is only a metre away from the Airport. If I give the 5GHz channel it's own name then I can select the 5GHz network and confirm the connection rate - this also works with Windows 7 machine in the same position with the signal strength being 'excellent'. So why when I have the same name for both channels will my machines only pick up the 2.4GHz signal?
Using two names would be okay exept that when I do this the 2.4GHz network slows completely and is unusable.
Last week I had a pretty good setup with an old Airport Extreme and now with the new 5th Gen unit I can either connect two machines at 5GHz or four machines at 2.4GHz - not a mixture of both. So basically I'm no better off than with my eight year old Airport Extreme.
I'm beginning to think that there is a defect with the new Airport Extreme unit - is there any simple checks I can do on the unit to confirm that it is operating correctly?
I'd really appreciate any help with this.
    Phil

Update: Solved. I reset the Airport Extreme a number of times in succession and finally it just worked - not sure what the problem was.

  • How do I connect my airport extreme to wifi as a repeater

how do I connect my airport extreme to wifi as a repeater?

    Thanks for the info.
Unfortunately, Apple has designed their routers to only extend or repeat the wireless signal from other Apple routers.
It would be extremely unlikely that the AirPort Extreme would be able to extend or repeat a wireless signal from another manufacturer's router.
I suppose that it could not hurt to try, but if the Extreme is still unopened, it might be a better idea to return the Extreme, get the information about the router at the neighbor's and then use a product from the same manufacurer that would be compatible to repeat or extend the wireless.
