Airport Utility 6.0.0 breaks support for my Airport Express

Computer updated to Airport Utility 6.0 but that breaks support for my Airport Express.  When I try to access the Airport Express it tells me I have to download Airport Utility 5.6 - but I can't find that anywhere on the Apple sites to download!

My catch-all list of Airport 6.0 & Firmware 7.6.1 problems:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've compiled a catch-all list of problems and changes with Airport Utility version 6.0 and FW 7.6.1. Some of the items may be relevant to this thread.
THE PROBLEMS WITH AIRPORT UTILITY 6 AND FIRMWARE 7.6.1:
Introduction: If you find AirPort Utility v6.0 too limiting or strange, you can ALSO install AirPort Utility v5.6, released alongside v6.0, to maintain all your previous capabilities. It works fine with both Airport g and n devices.
PLEASE NOTE: According to Apple you must FIRST install Airport Utility v6.0 in order to access and install Firmware upgrade 7.6.1. Do that first. THEN install Airport Utility v5.6 and use it instead if you prefer. HOWEVER: Another user has informed me that they were able to use Airport Utility v5.6 to install Firmware v7.6.1 without any problems! This would mean anyone can avoid Airport Utility 6.0 entirely if they chose.
1) According to Apple's documentation, Airport Utility version 6.0 is ONLY for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. It is NOT for 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you accidentally installed v6, you'll have to dig around in Apple - Support - Downloads for the previous relevant version for your devices and OS version. Here is the relevant page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1483
2) The HELP for Airport Utility has been updated. When you first access it you may well be looking at the old Help. It is supposed to update itself spontaneously over the Internet. It took a couple minutes in my case. Be sure you are looking at the NEW Help before you start using it. One way to tell is that the list of help topics essentially doubles from what there used to be. Also, the very first topic in the NEW Help should read:
"Set up an AirPort device > Set up a new AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule"
3) The HELP has some WRONG information. Here we go:
3a) There is NO "Enable Guest Network" setting. You CANNOT create a guest network or name it or give it any settings. Why this is still listed in Help, I have no idea. Why the setting is gone: This is most likely because the technology behind guest networks, WPS, has been thoroughly CRACKED in the wild. Google "WPS cracked" for lots of documentation of the situation. It won't be resolved soon.
3b) I can't find any 'Setup Assistant". Everything is now manual. This is not to say that there isn't a setup assistant that appears when you FIRST set up your Airport device. I don't know.
4) After installing Airport Utility v6.0, there is no indication of the accompanying firmware update until you decide to run the new version. Even then, you have to click on the big icon of your Airport device and notice an 'Update' button about halfway down the popup window. You then have to assume that this button is telling you to update your firmware.
5) After you update your Airport device's firmware, you may well discover an ERROR subwindow popping up inside Airport Utility that says:
"An error occurred while updating the firmware. -6721"
Don't panic! All you need to do is go into your Wi-Fi settings, either in your menubar or the Network preferences, and turn OFF Wi-Fi, then turn ON Wi-Fi again. This is part of a long standing bug in Lion's Wi-Fi with which I bet you are already familiar, certainly up through Lion version 10.7.2.
6) Miscellaneous changes in Airport Utility 6:
6a) The keyboard command to manually change your Airport devices settings is GONE. You have to click the little 'Edit' button after clicking on the big icon for your device.
6b) There is no longer any summary window for your Airport device. You have to instead click on the big "Internet" icon for related data, then click on the big icon for your Airport device for local settings data.
6c) There is no longer any HELP advising users to EXPORT their settings. (The Help only talks about Import of settings). BE SURE TO EXPORT YOUR NEW SETTINGS! I did this immediately after both updates.
6d) MAC address filtering for Airport devices is GONE.
6e) All references to IPV6 anywhere are GONE. I have to assume the IPV6 settings are now entirely working and entirely automatic. Let's hope so.
6f) Signal and Noise data and graphs are GONE. Use Apple's Wi-Fi Diagnostics app instead. Apple have hidden it here in Lion:
/System/Library/CoreServices/W-Fi Diagnostics
6g) In order to access the menu items in Airport Utility, you have to first click on the big icon for your Airport device.
--> No doubt there are other changes, oddities or bugs related to these changes. But this is what I came up with during a cursory strafing of the software.
  • Airport Utility 6.0 Doesn't Support My AEBS?
    I'm confused! Just downloaded Airport Utility 6.0 which came in through Software Update. I downloaded it as well as a firmware update for my Airport Express (7.6.1) which showed up on the graphical interface.
    My wireless network is set up with an older AEBS (b/g) which is connected to the modem and a newer AX (n) in another room where it is also connected to my stereo system. My confusion is that when I click on my older AEBS in the new Airport Utility graphical interface, the window that opens says that it is not supported by Airport Utility 6.0. So, what does that mean? Has my wireless network changed? Am I only connected to the internet through my Airport Express? Please clarify, if possible.
    BTW, I have two iMacs: one is running Lion (10.7.2) and the other is running Leopard (10.5.8).
  • HT1218 My airport express is 10 years old and I get the message that this version of airport utility (6.2) doesn't support my base station? What to do?
    My airport express is 10 years old and I get the message that this version of airport utility (6.2) doesn't support my base station? What to do?
    What to do?
    Two Options:
    1) Buy a new AirPort Express, which will be supported.
    2) Try a workaround....not supported by Apple.....to install AirPort Utility 5.6 on the Mac using the Mountain Lion operating system and use the 5.6 application to administer the old AirPort Express.  See this thread for more details:
  • 10.10.3 breaks support for ATI video cards
    The 10.10.3 update has broken support for a bunch of ATI video cards that worked just fine under 10.10.2. This is for my Mac Pro 5,1. Some folks also reported issues with breaking support for Nvidia cards, but have mentioned that the latest Nvidia beta drivers might work.
    There is a thread that may be found here that has some details:
    OS X 10.10.3 Update
    and here (reverting back to 10.10.2 fixes things):
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1864352
    Specifically, my Visiontek Eyefinity 6 7750 stopped working, and another users Radeon 7770 stopped working.  Yet, the 7970 continues to work.  Reverting to the old ATI 5770 that came with the machine renders it usable. This is a problem as the 7750 only took a single slot, and the two 5770s eat up 3 slots so I can't use my USB 3 card, etc.
    I remember this once happened before.  I think it was with the 10.9.2 update which borked a bunch of video cards that worked fine under 10.9.1, and then were again made to work just fine with the 10.9.3 update.
    All the 'standard' fixes have been attempted.  Clean installs.  Fix permissions. Etc.
    Not sure why apple would seemingly disable support for these cards, other than by accident, I assume, much like happened with the 10.9.2 update.
    Also not sure if just copying the correct driver from 10.10.2 might solve the problem until Apple get's around to fixing the issue.  Has anyone tried?  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks!
    Hi, i am using dual Cinema Display 30 and 23 with a HIS ATI 7750 1 GB on a Mac Pro 3.1. Post upgrade from 10.10.2 to 10.10.3 my display eded unusable blurry. Therefore I have tried to replace the 10.10.3 kext with the previous 10.10.2. But it did not work out as expected. I managed to get some video output but no acceleration at all. Therefore the system is unusable. Therefore i full downgraded to 10.10.2 now.
    Never the less it might be a good starting point for someone to get acceleration running. This is what I did:
    I have to set the nvram variable kext-dev-mode=1, but be warned this will allow any unsigned > .kext to load, including rootlets, malware, etc.
    I did this in order to allow me to modify the kext if necessary and to ensure that if 10.10.2 kext might be locked that they still be loaded and the computer will not be prevented from boot.
    sudo nvram boot-args="kext-dev-mode=1"
    sudo shutdown -r now
    Post this i copied from my other Mac running 10.10.2 the file /System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX4000.kext to my Mac Pro 3.1 running 10.10.3 with no proper video output. Basically i copied all ATI related kext from one mac to the other.
    copied  [MAC10.10.2]/System/Library/Extensions/ATI* ----> [MAC10.10.3]/System/Library/Extensions/ATI*
    copied  [MAC10.10.2]/System/Library/Extensions/AMD* ----> [MAC10.10.3]/System/Library/Extensions/AMD*
    someone needs to do a diff here to identify the file with is necessary the only one i found with a significant change seems to be AMDRadeonX4000.kext
    I forced to rebuild kext cache manually
    sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions
    sudo kextcache -m /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kext.caches/Startup/Extensions.mkext /System/Library/Extensions
    And reboot!
    sudo shutdown -r now
    After the reboot I had  display output but no acceleration at all. Seeing the video out put made me happy but the system is unusable to to the lack of acceleration of the display. I am really looking forward for Apple to fix the update and to reapply support for the ATI GPUs hence it allows to save environmental resources to keep good products like the Mac Pro 3.1 running...
  • Is there a manual I can PRINT for the Airport Utility Software Version 5.5.3 for Windows?
    Is there a manual I can print for the Airport Utility Software Version 5.5.3 for Windows?
    If there is, I can't seem to find it anywhere (in the Software, by using Google, etc).
    I dont' believe there were manuals out there for different versions of the utility. That would be quite a few different manuals.
    There are different manuals for the different base stations however...
  • Airport utility 6.3.4 can not find my airport extreme 802.11ac
    Sometimes the program loses contact with Airport Extreme 802.11ac with firmware 7.7.3 The internet is OK and the internettlight is green but the software seems not to find my Airport Extreme 802.11ac. The curios thing is that the airport utility app on my Iphone will find the Airport Extreme and from here I can restart it - which (obvious) solves the problem - for some time
    Probably a known problem!
    The problem is with Yosemite. We have seen many posts from users with "disappearing" AirPorts, but unfortunately there does not appear to be a reliable solution at this time.
    Some users have reported that turning off the Firewall on their Macs has helped with this issue. Not sure if you want to try this, and we are not really recommending that you do this, but it might be worth a try if it is important for you to be able to "see" the AirPort Extreme in AirPort Utility from your Mac.
    Another check that you can perform that might help is to see if your Mac has been bitten by the Yosemite "naming" bug. To do this, open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and then open Sharing.  Check to make sure that the name of your Mac is displayed correctly.  If you see a (2), (3), (4) etc added to the name of the Mac, edit the name to correct it and restart your Mac.
    You may need to check this daily as when you have the bug, the "naming" will likely continue until we get a fix.
  • Airport utility 6.1 change ip address for router
    Hi there,
    I want to change the IP address for the router from 192.... to 10.....?  It doesn't seem possible with the new version of the aiport utility.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    You can change the IP address range that the AirPort Extreme provides as follows:
    Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click directly on the AirPort Exteme icon
    Click Edit in the next small window that appears
    Click Network at the top of the next window
    Click Network Options at the bottom of the window
    Here, you can changet the iPv4 IP address range from 192.168.x.x to 10.0.x.x
    Click Save and then click Update to restart the AirPort Extreme
    IF....the Network Options button is grayed out, this indicates that the AirPort Extreme is in Bridge Mode. In that type of setup, you have another modem/router or gateway "upstream" on your network.  That is is the device that is providing the 192.168.x.x. IP addresses.
    The AirPort Exteme simply passes through that network information to connected devices in Bridge Mode, since you only want one router on the network providing IP addresses.
    You will need to check with the support folks for your modem/router or gateway if you want to modify the settings on that device.
  • Airport Utility 5.6 is not supported in Mavericks. How do I access my old Airport Express?
    I have an old Airport Express streaming iTunes to a Bose Wave Radio. I wanted to change the name, but it requires Airport Utility 5.6 and that isn't supported by Mavericks. How do I access my old airport express with a computer on OSX 9?
    Yes, if you are running Tiger 10.4.x and have AirPort Utility 5.4.2 installed.
  • I have had a time capsule for years and it worked well.  Now my airport utility states it is unable to find any airport wireless devices.  When I rescan, I get the same response.  I access the internet wirelessly through my Time Capsule - that part works.
    My time capsule is currently not backing up my MAC.  My airport utility states it can't find any airport wireless devices.  But I can access the internet via my time capsule.  I was trying to reset my time capsule but it won't let me since the airport utiity states it can't find any airport wireless devices.
    i was having the same problem. i held the reset button on my airport express for ten seconds, waited for it to restart and than unplugged my internet modem for 15 seconds and waited for it to restart and my wireless worked. but when i go to setup everything through the airport utility everything goes to crap and i have to start over again. i don't get it.
  • [SOLVED]ModemManager 0.7 breaks support for Ericsson F3607gw WWAN card
    Hello,
    apparently the ModemManager v 0.7.990 currently in the repos no longer supports my WWAN card, a Dell 5540 Mobile Broadband (which is just a rebranded Ericsson F3607gw).
    ModemManager 0.6, which is the version used in Fedora 18, works just fine with the card and connections can be made.
    However, I cannot downgrade to MM 0.6 as Gnome 3.8 and NetworkManager require >=0.7.
    Has anyone encountered this problem before and has a fix/solution? Or should I file a bug in the Arch tracker? I got Bluetooth PANs to work with a patched bluez from this board, as the upstream version is behind the one used by fedora (4.101-1 vs. 4.101-4). WWAN is the only thing that doesn't work with my new Arch setup.
    Thanks in advance, any help would be much appreciated.
    I did, you linked to it already
    I slightly modified modemmanager-git in the AUR and added some dependencies, the git version now works for me.
  • Airport utility 6.3.1 doesn't work with airport express
    need help I can't get my airport extreme and airport express to work together on airport utility 6.3.1. The extreme works but not the express. Message pops up this version of airport utility doesn't support this base station
    is there any way to go backwards with my version of aiport untitlity?
    I am not recommending this, but some users have had success installing an older version of AirPort Utility 5.6 on their Macs. This is not supported by Apple, so there is no guarantee that it will work for you.
    If you want to give this a try, see this thread for information and details:
  • Airport Utility 5.6.1 doesn't see my Airport Extreme
    I'm good with the Ethernet connection for the internet, but Airport doesn't see my Airport Extreme.  It's connected to my IMac 10.6.8.   Have tried a reset with ballpoint pen, but nothing happens.  This all went crashing down the other evening with I suddenly had lost Internet on my MacBook Pro.  This ***** so bad.  Would it do me any good to call Apple support?
    OS X 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard for which you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
    There are no special techniques to download it. Just click on the link, then click the blue Download button, which will download and eventually deposit AirPort Utility 5.6.1 in your Downloads folder.
    It looks like this:
    Double-click it to extract the package installer. It looks like this:
    Double-click that to open the installer:
    Click Continue and follow the prompts, which will either install it in your Utilities folder or tell you a reason it cannot.
    After you perform the "hard reset" and the Extreme's LED is blinking slowly, go to your Wi-Fi menu and see if you find a network called "Apple Network nnnnnn". Select it, then launch AirPort Utility.
    The reason that everything is greyed out is that AirPort Utility cannot find any base stations to configure. If after doing all the above it still cannot, perform another "hard reset". If that does not work, perform a "factory defaults reset" as I explained above.
    What happened at the Apple Store? Other than having a nice ballpoint pen with an Apple logo on it, they are not going to do anything more than you can do.
    If you did not bring it there yet, bring your MacBook Pro along with you so that you can see for yourself how it ought to work.
  • I cannot find the 'WPA passphrase' to connect my printer via wireless and cannot find it in Airport utility (MAC says it cannot find any open airports)
    MAC OS X 10.6.3 - desktop Mac
    I browsed similar questions and saw that someone recommended going to the Airport Utility and then selecting manual set up or something- anyways, it could not find any airports. I have brought my printer from my house as my BF's has died - this is the first time it's asked for a WPA passphrase. We tried a very long series of capital letters and numbers as well as the password for the internet and both times the printer said "invalid passphrase"..... ......
    Airport Utility is for administration of genuine Apple Base Stations. If you have a different Brand, Airport Utility can do nothing for you.
    I think they're using ethernet.
    To connect a Printer via Ethernet, no password is needed.
    We already tried the password for the internet and that did not work...
    If a password is required to connect to the Internet, then WiFi is likley being used, and that WiFi password is the one needed for the Printer connect wirelessly as well.
    What make&model Printer? Is it indeed a Wireless Printer? Most connect via USB, but that would force it to use a specific computer to assist in printing.
  • AirPort Utility can't find Netgear router OR new AirPort Express
    Hello,
    I couldn't find my situation fully addressed in older posts, so I'm posting one myself.
    I am trying to EXTEND my current network with a newly purchased AirPort Express. My equipment is as follows:
    Comcast modem connected via ethernet cable to...
    Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 R7000 dual-band router
    One three-year-old Mac Mini running Lion
    One newer MacBook Pro running Mavericks
    Two iPhone 4S, latest software updated as of Nov. 2014
    Two-year-old iPad, latest software updated as of Nov. 2014
    Newly purchased AirPort Express as of Nov. 2014
    We have a large house with an office at the extreme end resulting in a week signal, so I need to extend my network. The Netgear router sends a strong signal otherwise, and ALL devices are working properly and are fully connected to the WIFI network.
    So here is the problem:
    I've tried many, many times to connect the APE using AP Utility with only two successful connections, but these connections were to "Join Existing Network" not to extend that network, but I selected this option as it seemed closest to what I want to do since "extension" of network was not an option. Then I see that I can edit the APE within AP Utility. I've done so, resetting the unit as a network extender, and the two times I tried this I sat waiting for five minutes for the thing to update only to get an error message. At this junction I could do nothing but remove the APE in AP Utility by "forgetting" it. No other options were available that I could see.
    Now, the two times I've done the above, were two times within 20+ attempts to get AirPort Utility to even see the darn thing. I've tried placing the APE near the Netgear router, moderately close (other side of room) and even at the far end of the house, and neither the APE or the Netgear router were ever found in the AP Utility save the two incidences mentioned above. I've scoured the net, rechecked all connections and performed all troubleshooting procedures I can find to no avail. All I get is a flashing amber light and no connection
    A: Why won't AirPort Utility find my Netgear Router?
    B: Why won't AirPort utility find my AirPort Express?
    C: Why, on the two occasions the AP Utility did find the APE, did it not give me the option anywhere to set it up as an EXTENDER to the current network?
    D: Is there any other way to add the APE to my network as desired without using AP Utility? (I do have the Negear Genie app, but I don't see options for adding a device for network extension so far)
    I'm at wits end. Can anyone help?
    Oh, and I've tried using AP Utility on both Macs listed above with the same results.
    Thanks for your help!
    A: Why won't AirPort Utility find my Netgear Router?
    AirPort Utility works only with an Apple router, as does the utility for a Netgear work only with a Netgear router.
    B: Why won't AirPort utility find my AirPort Express?
    Any of 3-4 common reasons. We'll have to work on troubleshooting that.
    C: Why, on the two occasions the AP Utility did find the APE, did it not give me the option anywhere to set it up as an EXTENDER to the current network?
    Apple designed the wireless "extend" feature on their routers to only work with other Apple routers.
    D: Is there any other way to add the APE to my network as desired without using AP Utility?
    No
    Not sure how you want to proceed at this point. It might be possible to use the AirPort Express to extend the Netgear network if you connect it using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection back to the Netgear router.
    If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, your best bet by far is to use another Netgear extender or repeater, which would likely be compatible with your Netgear router.
  • Is Airport Utility the only way to communicate with the Airport Extreme?
    For example on the other routers, you can access the admin control panel by typing 192.168.1.1 in the web browser. Is there a different IP address for this router? How can I get access to the advanced admin settings on a Windows computer (or Mac for that matter)?
    Nope, AirPorts cannot be configured through a web browser. You have to use AirPort Utility.
    Windows computers can also use AirPort Utility. You just have to install it. You can use the CD that came with your AirPort, or you can download AirPort Utility from the Apple website.
    As for "advanced admin settings," try Manual Setup.
