Any recourse for poor "genius bar" service?

We recently took my MacBook Air to a Genius Bar in NYC after the keyboard inexplicably stopped working. Were given a work order repair estimate of $280.
We were then told that they found liquid damage that would cost in the vicinity of $400 to fix. This was a suspicious conclusion as I've been fanatical about keeping it safe, but I figured it must've been my mistake.
We could ill-afford the $400 at the time, so decided to use it with an auxilliary keyboard instead. Then we discovered that we couldn't even turn it on as they had apparently switched it off at the shop; previously we'd been keeping it charged and using the sleep function, so that it would come back to life just by opening it or using the touchpad.
So we hauled it back, expecting that we would have to swallow the fee and get it repaired to even turn the thing back on again. Only this time we were told that the repair would cost $700+, and what's more that this was the original price quoted. It most certainly was not, and now I'm wondering what else they lied about.
Between this, the waste of money and effort that was MobileMe, and other growing problems with both iPhone and our laptops, I'm about to call time on my long relationship with Apple. But I'm not well pleased at being bamboozled by a spotty midtown jobsworth, to say nothing of the total loss of my expensive machine. But what to do when Apple turn a notoriously deaf ear to complaints?

Did you ask to speak to a manager at the store? Try another store (just asking)? You can also call Apple Customer Support and discuss the issue with them. Their phone is 800-676-2775.

  • Any recourse for a failed device?

Help. I upgraded to a Droid RazR in 2012 which never worked. Twice, it died and wiped out all data.  I abandoned it to stop the "bleeding" & had my old Blackberry reactivated for phone service. Is there any recourse or credit for a failed device I'm still paying for that prevents an upgrade until 06/14?  I have no faith in a Motorola device after this debacle, so I don't want another Motorola.  I love my old Blackberry, but it is old, the battery is failing, and I don't want to pay to maintain an old device when I pay for -- but get no benefit from -- an "upgraded" device.  I am willing to try most smartphones, but not Motorola at this point, and I want a keyboard.  So far, I've been told by Verizon store reps that I have to wait for my next upgrade which I can't believe is really true.  Very frustrating.

Spirit of the law is not enforceable , but the letter of the law is.
Verizon Wireless sells devices to their customers, they manufacturer nothing. They provide a warranty replacement service for the makers of the devices. Act as agent so you the customer do not have to deal with all the different device makers.
Verizon wireless sells you a wireless connection to their talk and data network. That is all.
Samsung, Motorola, NEC, HTC, Pantech, and Apple make and warrant their products.
You as the consumer should research the devices prior to buying or replacing them. The net has tons of information out tgere for you. http://www.phonescoop.com is a nice place to look, and Cnet is another good site.

  • How long does it take for the Genius Bar to replace the bottom case of my Macbook?

I bought this Macbook on Christmas Eve '09 and by last year summer, the bottom casing was peeling off and I now know that Apple is replacing macbook bottom cases free of charges regardless of warranty status. What I would like to know is, if I take it to the Genius Bar, would I have to wait for more than a day? Or would it take as much as one hour?

I would say that it depends on the store.  I would give your local Apple store a call and ask them.  If they have the parts in store I believe you'll be in an out as long as you make an appointment.

Never mind. After testing with my android tablet I found it was the headphones. They are Bose QC 15. The original battery was running down but work great yesterday. I suspected the battery and changed it but the problem persisted which led me to blame the upgrade. I should have known better. My apple devices have been flawless. Sorry for crying wolf...

  • I bought 3.5 about 6 weeks ago--do I have any recourse for upgrade/refund?

What's the official policy on this?
    Am I entitled to 4.0 and/or a rebate?
    Thanks!

Entitled? No. But of course you can appeal to the Apple folks, and they may give you a break. Always worth a try.
Will you get something? Hard to tell. 6 weeks ago is a long time for a retail return. Presumably you opened the package by now, so just returning it for credit isn't an option. Talk to them. Make your case. They may respond in your favor.

  • Genius Bar Service Letter

Last week I got my phone replaced by the Apple Store in DC. How ever the service confirmation letter provided by the store did not include the IMEI number of the phone that I got replaced. I need that to be rewritten and e-mailed to me.

You will need to contact the store directly - you are not addressing apple here.  We are users just like you.

  • Will the Genius Bar install Snow Leopard and Aperture 3 for me...?

I have an iMac 20" Core 2 Duo with Leopard. RAM is maxed at 3GB. All my data is backed up on a external HDD using Time Machine.
I need upgrade to Snow Leopard in order to get Aperture 3 (which I need in order to read RAW photos from my new camera).
Anyway, ever since I upgraded to Leopard I haven't been thrilled with my iMac's performance (I did the quick upgrade instead of the complete rebuild). So I want to wipe it clean this time and start over with a fresh install of Snow Leopard. The iMac is 3 years old now, so I think it's time for a fresh start.
I'm not comfortable doing this myself. Will the Genius Bar do this for me? I'm happy to buy the Snow Leopard and Aperture upgrades. But will the Genius Bar charge me? Or will they do it for free since I paid them already for the software?
    Thanks for your help!

I do not know if they would do that or not; I believe there is a maximum time limit for a Genius Bar appointment and these kinds of installs may take longer than that. And, it is truly easy to do; your performance problems may not have had anything to do with the OS, but possibly some incompatible third party software or some other corruption. So, I'm not trying to change your mind, but if you want to try it yourself, there are a lot of people here who'd be able to walk you through it.
Now, another idea: did you know that iPhoto supports RAW formats? You can find many help articles like this one by going to Apple support and typing iPhoto RAW into the search field:

  • Why is signing up for genius bar so difficult

I just spent fifteen minutes in an endless loop, trying to sign up for the genius bar at an apple store. Tried calling the store, was told by automated voice that I can only do it online. Tried to sign up online, following instructions (find store, select genius bar) but it just sent me to a page that explains what the genius bar is, and suggests other means of support. Finally got the store by pretending I wanted to buy something, explained it was an itunes problem, and I wanted genius bar, and she said let me route you to the iTunes department and sent me back to Customer Care (for which I would have to pay $29 to solve a problem that is definitely Itunes 12 software related). Fortunately she told me the magic word to get someone at the store: "manager." That person also tried to route me to customer care, until I said, aren't there genius bar people who know Itunes? He admitted there were, so now I have an appointment. I'm an Apple Mac Mini user, have been with apple for decades, but this is ridiculous!

Although we cannot speculate "why", the 'Decision Tree' approach probably indicates that Apple feels that in some cases 'other methods' may be better use of their resources.
I have never failed to get a Genius Bar appt. - answer the questions 'ambiguously' where the 'system' cannot find a match for your statement. As a test one time for another user in your predicament, I put "Blah, blah, blah" in the description field = worked like charm (I stopped short of actually 'making' the reservation)
enjoy your trip to the Apple Store

  • Genius bar appt.

Why is it so dang hard to make a genius bar appt.?  I have spoken with people over the phone with an issue but it still keeps happening. I go to make an appt. and it won't let me. It make me go through the phone system and Schedule a time in talk on the phone. Excuse me, I have done all that. I am sign in and everything but It still won't give me the option of making a direct appt. I go to the store web site that has helped before.  I am so confused!  Help!

they are likely trying to weed out the "simpler" problems/issues to save the "real" issues for the Genius Bar... If it doesn't give you an option to "Bring in for service [Genius Bar], then just choose a different "reason" for your issue... choose Hardware Problem > Computer won't start up normally or turn on (or similar) and you can just explain your situation at the appointment to the GENIUS (snickers! why wait!) once you are there... It likely won't cause any real problems doing so this way.
I too have had a HECK of a HARD time even FINDING the link to the G.Bar signup page with time slots available at the Genius Bar(s)... seems like they are making it harder to find (on purpose of course, it used to be simple to book an appointment).... leaving a portion or majority of all calls to the Phone and Online Tech Support teams....
Saving money for AAPL... less genius bar appointments means less geniuses to pay. Less Geniuses to pay means more money for Apple, the true "Genius" of it all.
Lol but seriously, either they are becoming overwhelmed with GBar appts., OR They are saving money with the same amount (or less) of Genius Bar appointments... OR their stores have gotten too crowded with Apple's fanboys and fangirls and they are trying to clear up more space for people buying new Apple products and accessories... which is the other (or THE MAIN) point of the Apple Store's existence...
Hope I answered your question... thanks for dealing with my long-winded and round-about answers!
    Cheers!

  • My Phone is Inoperable - Genius Bar at 1pm

Have had a host of problems since upgrading to 4.0. Day 1 was a battery mess (drained immediately), but after a few reboots/syncs, it worked fine (but slower) for 2 weeks or so, but then crashed repeatedly this past Sunday. The phone was rebooting/non-functional for around 4 hours until I plugged it into a wall. Then it rallied for a few hours with phone and email working (although any non-Apple app crashed), and I was able to sync and upgrade to 4.0.1 on Sunday night. Monday morning, the phone was fantastic. It was fast, the apps didn't stall or have delays at all - everything worked.
Then the wheels came off. The phone went back into constant reboot or shutdown mode, and when it started up for brief moments, registered as "No Service." Now it won't do anything. I can boot it up, but it won't get past the black/white Apple intro screen, and occasionally has the "Reconnect to iTunes icon. When I try a full Restore/Recovery Mode, that fails as well. I have seen 2 errors here - one doesn't recognize a SIM card, and the other, more consistent error is an Unknown Error of various numbers.
I love Apple's products, but this experience has been frustrating to say the least. I use this phone for work and personal, and travel constantly, so am beginning to get nervous this will happen when I need it the most. I am heading to their store for a Genius Bar at 1pm.
Any thoughts, or is this beyond a "Fix at Home" solution.

I don't live anywhere near Delaware. I didn't book any appointment (yet) at the genius bar.
this is very weird because at first I thought it was some glitch where someone typed their email wrong and sent it
to mine accidently, but it even uses my name. why is this happening? didn't someone hack into my account?
the reason i am concerned is that could someone use my applecare if they registered with my apple id?

Somebody at scheduling incorrectly typed your email address instead of the intended address. For example the email should have gone to [email protected] and they typed [email protected] The error could have been as simple as a single character mistyped.
    There is nothing to do.

  • Bringing in Stereo Headset to Genius Bar

I am schedules for a Genius Bar appointment this evening and this will be my first time. I am bringing in the Stereo Headset that came with my iPhone for repair/replacement. Unfortunately, I left my phone at a friend's house overnight and am unsure on how procedures will go at the store to get my headset fixed. I have the serial number with me but am unsure if that is sufficient.

The serial number should be sufficient.
If it is determined that your earbuds need to be fixed, the earbuds will be exchanged under warranty.
