Apparent chnage in footage speed??

Hi,
I exported a large QT to idvd using 'best performance' as it was a touch over 65mins. It is a sign language video and now, it appears that at some points the footage 'speeds up', the signing is definitely quicker, is this a quirk in the compression to fit it on the disk in best performance??
Appreciate your comment. One other thing, if I import to compressor, then to idvd, the Apple team at my store think it woul be compressed again and would see a quality loss???
Thanks.

Unless you were using a double layer disc, 65 minutes is too long for Best Performance. In iDVD 6 you would need to use Best Quality (in iDVD 7 it's called High Quality).
The earlier iApps work much better with DV content. There is no reason to go through Compressor.
What format is your content in?

  • What is the best way to ramp footage speed 'Green Wing style'?

I have some 720P 60fps footage to show people walking in slow motion in a hospital. Looks great, however I would like to speed them up to 'real life' pace and then slow them back down.
What the easiest way of doing this? Should I do it Motion or in FCP? Why is it so fiddly or am i missing a trick?
    Any guidance greatly appreciated.

  • Green Day footage speed technique?

Does anyone know how they did the cool different speed technique on Green Day's "American Idiot" video?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2BwBiaSvNQ
At about :32 in (when the song goes to the chorus), each member of the band's footage is normal speed, sped up, or slowed down with a nice consistent slow camera pan across.
I suppose maybe they did this with motion tracking and masking but it seems like that would have been very difficult. But it's a very cool technique.
Any input would be much appreciated!

While it is true that it could all be tracked and roto - you could also achieve this same effect by having each member move at a different speed at the same time, in the case 2 very slow, one fast and then the clip has been sped up.
You often see similar version in rock videos where actors move very slowly and then clip is sped up to normal speed and/or played around with speed ramping, but gives a very jerky movement to the people in the scene.

  • Footage speed altered upon ingestion

I just shot a day of performances at a children's music festival. 4 disparate cameras were employed: my panny HPX250, a borrowed panny 170, my 7D and a GoPro Hero3. I'm now ingesting the footage nto FCPX and something crazy has happened that I've never seen nor heard of:
All footage was shot 720. (the 250: 24pN, the 170: 24p; the 7D: 720 60i; the GoPro: 720 60i) All footage was ingested into FCPX with the same settings. Despite the different cameras used everything plays well together on a timeline, and I never got one of those warnings about miss-matched footage when dropping one onto a timeline.
The problem?: all the clips on from the 170 play back at about half speed. In fact, when I dropped a clip into a timeline and altered the speed 250% looked to be about right but the motion was choppy as tho frames were missing. This would mean, what? In the unaltered clips something like two out of three frames were removed and the remaining clips multiplied? Kind of like putting a strobe effect on proper footage. In addition, the audio is normal speed and it generally ends before the video does on each clip.
This problem exists to the very QT files that were created in the Events folder. Play one in the QT player and it too plays slow so something happened on the was from the camera to the hard drive.
    Any ideas???
    alan b
BTW: only last week I did a clean erinstall of my system upgrading to OS 10.8.3, I did a clean install of FCPX with a new download fro the AppStore. In the middle of these troubles I describe above I also trashed preferences. So...?
PS--also, I went back to the 170 and played the footage from the card itself within the camera and it plays back normally and properly.

First off, let me report that I just finished re-ingesting the 170 footage and it is now running correctly. More on that below.
--The timeline WAS 60i but, as I pointed out,, the footage was misplaying even at the root level of the QT files in the Events folder. I was only looking at them in FCPX from within the Events window. They weren't even on the timeline. However--and here is where my massive confusion with these numbers comes into play--I just checked the settings on the 250 were 720 59.94P 24pN. So help me out here: 59.94P refers to the play rate and 24pN refers to the acquisition rate? The 170 was set at 720P/24P frame rate @ "default" whatever that means.
--The 250 has even more speeds than the 170 but won't record sound if the frame rate and acquisition rate don't match.  I can only figure that the "Default" notation for th 170's frame rate means a matching 23.97?
--This is where the "roads splits" so to speak. As I mention above, I now have operational clips from the 170. I just ingested the files directly from the camera into FCPX. The prior attempt was done by first copying the raw P2 files onto my HD and then importing to FCPX from those files. I don't know why that would change anything since that's exactly how ALL the footage from ALL the other cameras was handled, but that was the only difference and now I have workable files.
So, I dunno. Makes no sense to me. Maybe yous guys can make sense of it for me.

  • Reverse speed produced blank footage

Using PrPro CS5 with 2 clips overlaying each other.  I have a sequence with settings 720X480 1.21 widescreen 29.97 FPS
I have a shot of a television shot at 1280X720 and I'm overlaying the screen with another piece of footage that is 720X480 1.0 stretched to wide screen to fit.  I am trying to demonstrate that the footage I have on the screen can be played "backwards" but when I apply this effect (right click on footage, speed/duration, check the "reverse speed" box), the footage play choppy.  It blacks out for over half the duration of the clip.  Any help?

  • 2009 Macbook issue: download speed limitation

    Hi
Mi wife got a late 2009 white macbook that's driving me crazy. Despite we got a 7Mbit ADSL connection and all others macs at home (we got 2 more 2008 macbooks and a 2008 macbook pro) with the very same OS version (10.6.4) and network settings are working properly and downloading at full speed, her one looks to have some kind of speed limitation in download to around 1.5 Mbps.
The ping and upload speeds are the very same of other computers, and apparently randomly the download speed also on that computer gets back to around 7 Mbps...
I just spent the afternoon doing tests and I got nowhere but maybe I found a pattern...
    First what I excluded:
-doesn't depend on how it's hooked to the net, same behavior by ethernet or wifi in both cases the other service was off
-any other mac using the same connection is working properly, did side by side tests
-ping is always the same on both computers used for test
-it is not a DNS issue
-deleted and created a new position in Network panel
    -did several restarts, no solution
-doesn't depend on a specific app being used (but maybe apps can matter, see below)
-none of possible fixes I found online did work
-probably it isn't related to OS version or updates, this issue has likely been there since a lot of time, and over more os updates (not really sure of this, we had unrelated netwok issues and changed provider for that reason in last year, we cot a stable and uniform environment just recently)
    Now what I noticed:
-As soon as the computer is started and I open a single browser (be it Safari, Chrome or Firefox doesn't change) speedtest.net test is ok, 7Mbps download.
-work and navigate with it, it's ok, download speed remains 7Mbps
-As soon another internet using application is opened (Mail, another browser) the connection speed drops to 1.5 Mbps (this is ALWAYS the limit, no relevant fluctuation in this)
-If I close any of above apps and remain with a single browser, running tests initially report still the 1.5 limit, but shortly after (one or two minutes) the speed gets back to 7Mbps
My wife needs to work with Mail, Skype, and at least two browsers open, so this limit is giving her great troubles

This doesn't really help narrow down the problem
    {quote}
doh, you are right... sorry... the possible fixes I had found around are the ones reported right before...
Create a new user account on the problem computer and see if the slow speeds and strange behaviour persists in it.
    I did, it does...
    - created a new user and logged in
    - opened Safari, speedtest returns 7Mbit/s in download
    - opened Firefox, after a little speed drops to 1.4
    - some successive test starts slow (1.4) then sometimes speeds up, but most remain at 1.4
    - start chrome too, same behaviour
    - close Safari and Firefox, wait a little (1 or 2 minutes) do the test with Chrome, back to 7Mbit/s
Then go through stuff like this http://www.gballard.net/macrant/osx_troubleshooting.html.
I went through it and did most of what's suggested there (it's a little complex because when I am not working my wife is usually using her macbook to study and needs to use it all the time)...
    - unused disk space is 95,6 GB
    - booted in single user mode and did a fsck -fy
    - repaired permissions
Nothing changed, both the behavior takes place in new user account, and in main one, where any internet using application (Mail, Skype...) opened together causes the download slow down...

  • Stuttering when changing speed to 10%

I have a 16mm film shot at 16fps that I transferred to miniDV and then captured. I changed the speed of the clip in Final Cut Pro to 10%. I did this to get a slow motion effect. It looks great on the Canvas, and on some monitors, but when viewed on other monitors or from a DVD that was burned, there is a stuttering effect where agencent frames flicker back and forth every several frames. What can I do to fix this?

    Wow, that's a lot of steps ...
There is also the more labor intensive (but much cheaper) slo-mo process using Compressor that Patrick Sheffield developed. Compressor uses the same optical flow technology as Shake so if access to Shake is not a possiblity and you need to do this NOW, it is listed below.
    good luck.

As you may have noticed when you slow down footage in FCP and use smoothing, it goes a bit "soft". This is because in order to make the "in-between" frames it contructs an average of the previous and following frames. Compressor 2 actually does an analysis of the pixel movement and constructs an inbetween frame that is sort of the equivalent of motion tracking each pixel. This is the same kind of stuff that the Twixtor plugin does.
Here are the results: A still from my 75% slow-mo from Final Cut and from Compressor. Note the difference in detail...
In order to use Compressor, I had to do some monkey motion. I exported my clip from FCP as a self contained Quicktime. Because the video was shot on film and transfered with a 3:2 pulldown, I used Shake to remove the pulldown. You could also use Cinema Tools to do the same thing.
After that a little math is required. I wanted to run the footage at 75% or 3/4 speed. That means I need 4/3rds the number of frames. Multiply that by 24 fps (my original footage speed w/o pulldown) and I get 32 fps (if my footage had been at 30, I'd be using 40 fps).
Knowing that, I plugged my clip into Compressor 2, selected a codec (probably the same as you are feeding into it), set the frame rate to 32 (calculated above) in the codec options, selected the Frame Controls panel, turned Frame Controls to Custom - now here's the key: Set Rate Conversion to Best (High Quality motion compensated). I then saved this setting as 75% Slowdown for future use.
Submit the batch and wait a while. When it completed, I used Shake to set the frame rate to 24 and insert a pulldown, but again, you can use Cinema Tools to resolve the frame rate.
Brought that clip back into FCP and Voilá! Clean slowdown.
    Have fun...

  • Sudden drop in speed

So I went to bed last night with the Internet running around 20 - 35mb down happy days, however I woke up this morning and it has dropped to bellow 1mb down (around 0.7mb) this is an almost impossible speed to use the Internet,  I have no idea why this has happened I have tried everything from resetting the router to seeing if my computers wireless adapter is playing up (it is not) and nothing, it has taken me all day to try and work out how to fix this problem but with my Internet running so slow it is taking to long, I did the BT speedcheck and apparently the drop in speed comes from within my house (great that helps me in no way ) I emailed BT but to no luck as they still haven't got back to me, can anyone offer any help or advise if you have come across this problem too and have solved it.

You need to run a BT diagnostic speedtest to find out what your IP profile is.

  • I can't burn any CDs.  Error 4280.  No solutions found in similar threads yet.

    Hi all,
I can't seem to burn any of my music (purchased OR ripped from my own CD collection) in iTunes all of a sudden.  It begins the process, then cancels about a minute in and returns an error code of 4280.  I have researched it on the web for a month now, with no success.
Some say it's a problem with Sony drives.  I don't have a sony drive.
Some say I need to update my iTunes and/or restart my computer. I have done both - no change.
Some say I need to decrease the write speed.  I have attempted it at 16X, 8X, and 1X, with no success.
iTunes CD diagnostics suggested unclicking the CD Text option.  I did.  Still canceled the burn.
I know the drive recognizes the discs, because if I close iTunes and insert a blank disc, I get the pop-up window with options, and it will play audio and video.
I'm running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
    Drive: Matshita DVD-RAM UJ--845S
    Acer Aspire 5670
    iTunes 10.5.1.42
    QuickTime 7.7.1
    Apple Application Support 2.1.5
    iPod Updater Library 10.0d2
    CD Driver 2.2.0.1
    CD Driver DLL 2.1.1.1
Does anyone have a solution?  Or anything I can try that I haven't already?  I have read over 30 threads now that offer no help, so please, do not repost link to threads as help unless you have read them and have found that they contain suggestions that I have not covered here.  And thank you for taking the time to assist me.

    Additional information:
-also ran "Repair" with new download of iTunes
-am using the same spindle of CDs that worked perfectly a month ago.  Tried another brand also to be safe.  None worked.
-ran CD/DVD diagnostics within iTunes with Apple Care - no issues apparent
-also tried write-speed 20X on advice of Apple Care (don't know why they thought 20X would be the magic number after the other 3 I tried didn't work)
-tried running itunes in another user account on the computer - same problem, same error code
-Apple suggested it was a copyright issue.  I can't even burn music that I created/recorded myself, so that doesn't make sense.
-They thought maybe Quicktime wasn't installed properly, so we checked a film in Windows Media - it played, meaning Quicktime was fine apparently.
    Solution:
Unclicked CD text option & Sound Check, ran burn from the File drop down menu (max speed) on a Philips CD-R and it worked!  Had been right clicking the playlist name and selecting Burn option from there.  That being said, it did not work on 2 other brands prior, with same settings.  Not sure why.  Just happy it's working again. Is it a brand issue?

  • Do I need to use Toshiba Recovery Wizard?

    Hi everyone!
I've been having major problems with my Toshiba since I first got it last March. I have a Toshiba Satellite L750, Windows 7, 64-bit, with 6GB of RAM.
Last December (right before finals were due -_-) my laptop just committed suicide. The hard drive totally died on me out of the blue. I got a computer-savvy friend to replace my hard drive with a new one. Everything was working fine at first, but within a week my laptop ate that hard drive up too. It was BIZARRE. I went back home for the holidays and since my laptop was still under warranty then (it's not now), Toshiba replaced my hard drive, reinstalled Windows, etc. This was in January - things were fine, but it's now May and everything is messed up again.
Basically everything takes forever to load or it doesn't load at all - desktop, taskbar, programs, internet, user accounts... sometimes Windows won't even load. Booting in Safe Mode, things work, but they still take a little longer than usual, even just logging into my user account.
I've ran CCleaner numerous times. I've tried starting up with certain programs disabled. I've ran virus scans, and this is another problem -every single time I try to run Malware Bytes, in Safe Mode and regularly, the scan ALWAYS freezes. After that, nothing else works and I have to restart the laptop. Startup Repair doesn't do anything. Neither does sfc/scannow. Also, I tried doing a System Restore, only to find that I have no restore points. It doesn't seem to be a virus - Avast is always running and hasn't found anything.
I ran a system analyzer on my laptop and this is some of the information I got:
513.0 GB of available space on system partition
Total size of hard drives is 595.6 GB
Total memory of PC is 6092 MB
-all of this is apparently "above average"
    HDD speed = 58MB/second
CPU has 2 cores running at 2.29GHz
    CPU temperature = 60C (140F)
I uninstalled programs I don't use and have tried physically cleaning my computer, but to no avail. Usually I can get past the startup/Windows logo screen fine, but once I get to a user account/desktop, that's when all the problems start.
    Any suggestions?
Someone said to use the Toshiba Recovery Wizard/HDD Recovery, since I'm not too fussed about losing files. Do you think this will help? Would it completely wipe out Windows 7, though?
I can access the "Repair your computer" function that leads me to Toshiba Recovery Wizard... does that mean that it'll restore everything to factory settings (out-of-box) and reinstall Windows 7 automatically? I'm assuming this because I don't remember receiving any recovery disks, so I'm thinking this might be the hidden recovery partition. I don't have the Windows installation CD, so I just want to make sure I won't end up without an OS before I go ahead and try it.
I'm trying to exhaust all options because I'm a brokeass student and would prefer to not have to buy a new laptop... but if nothing can be done, then I guess I'll have to.
    Thanks for reading!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Thanks Jerry!
So do you think this will work? The fact that my laptop has eaten up 3 HDDs now kinda makes it seem like it's a hardware issue... a problem with the motherboard. I gave this laptop to Toshiba in January when I was still under warranty, and I specifically told them that this laptop goes Hannibal for hard drives -which is not normal - and that they should check if there's a hardware issue (it had eaten 2 HDDs at that point). Clearly they didn't do that, though - they just slapped in a new hard drive. If they had listened to me, then my HDD wouldn't be dying every 3, 4 months. I've accepted that I need to buy a new laptop, but I just need something to work in the meantime while I look for one (and scrounge up some cash).
Also, do you think the fact that nothing ever loads on my laptop will have an effect on the Recovery Wizard? I read that if even one thing goes wrong during the recovery process, everything will be completely lost and you can't even try the process again. Obviously I don't want that to happen!
And one more question: it's not 100% clear in the manual and that is what I originally came here to post about - will the "out-of-box" recovery process delete my OS? I have a Windows 7 sticker on my laptop, so I'm pretty sure it was pre-installed... I definitely don't have any disks with me. So even if it does work, will it reinstall Windows 7/MS Office/etc. automatically for me?
    Thanks again for your help!

  • S16 24fps - DVCPro HD 25 fps -   24 fps editing and output?

I'm new on this forum so "hi everybody!"
We're about to shoot a short feature on S16 film and I'm in charge of postproduction.
Last feature we made was shot on S16@24 fps -> HDCam SR telecine -> Betacam SP -> 24fps edit on Avid Film Composer -> EDL -> HDCam SR conformation, color grading and titling -> 35mm shoot.
The thing was, finding for free a HDcam SR deck and an Avid for conformation, color grading, titling etc... was really painful.
So now that we have less money than last time and that HD technologies evolved, I'm considering DVCPro HD instead of HDCam SR.
If the movie is good enough, we may get more money to go back to film on a 35mm print but nothing's sure right now. If the film isn't good enough, we'll stay in DVD/BluRay world.
The big question is "24 fps or 25 fps shooting?" (24 being the standard for film and BluRay/HD-DVD (ok, HD-DVDead) but can be an issue in my post production process)
I know for I can only make 25 fps DVCPro HD tapes in my Pal world (talking "1 film frame for 1 TC frame").
I know I can transfer 25 fps DV on FCP and edit everything at 24 fps with Cinema Tools.
But can I transfer 25 fps DVCPro HD to FCP with Cinema Tools (online editing), edit them at 24 fps and output a "BluRay quality" 24 fps video file? (for the 35mm shooting part I'm not affraid as I'll need TGA/Tiff frame sequences so one frame is one frame, there's no footage speed or anything involved)
I'll need a good 24 fps video file for the audio post part...
The goal is to stay in the digital domain after the telecine, and never use the original negative again (juste like we did for the last short feature we made). So no keycodes/flex or anything.
I know DVCPro HD is not as good as HDCam SR or even an original negative cut scan, but we won't have enough money for that and I was pretty impressed by the DVCPro HD->35mm footage I've seen so far.
    Thanks

  • Importing AVCHD: iMovie vs. Voltaic HD

I'm going to use a new HDD-based camcorder (those who read my previous topics will know why I - or rather someone else - chose HDD over tape). I've narrowed down my choice between a "basic" standard definition model, and a choice of more expensive high-def. models which feature optical image stabilization and take nice still pictures. Since they're HDD-based, they record in AVCHD.
I've been recently given a 10 s. sample of AVCHD video which I converted using Voltaic HD, but it took about 2 minutes (and I can consistently reproduce this time when converting it again) on my 2.2 GHz MBP. This is far from what I've read here when importing with iMovie '08 (which seems to take about twice as long as the actual footage length, and not ten times).
For those who own and use an AVCHD camcorder with iMovie '08 (and possibly Voltaic as well), how long does it usually take you to import footage with iMovie? With Voltaic?
Do you think (or know from personal experience), importing with Voltaic would be faster when importing larger clips, or do I really have to expect it taking ten times as long as the footage to import AVCHD?

I used "Voltaic" to test a short sequence recorded with a Panasonic AVCHD SD5 camcorder - to see what the quality was like before buying the camera, and before buying an Intel Mac to go with it.
Like Appleman's ..that camcorder shoots on SD (..or SDHC..) memory chips, not a hard disc.
Actually, that's what my sample came from (an SD5, or possibly an SD9).
I was disappointed with the results - though that might have been because I didn't choose some settings correctly - because although normal zooms and pans and static material looked OK, fast-moving material (..e.g; a train passing by..) seemed to have its fields reversed or overlaid, with an annoyingly imprecise location of vertical edges, and strong "comb" effects on moving edges ..as if the interlaced fields had been de-interlaced and then doubled to make Voltaic's frames (..this was using PAL video at 'full' 1920x1080i).
I'm not sure I understand all of that, but I was also disappointed with Voltaic's results on fast-moving objects (there wre two in the sample clip). Overall quality was very good though, and once the footage was converted from AIC to DV, the problem was less noticeable.
P.S: ..You say "..it took about 2 minutes (and I can consistently reproduce this time when converting it again) on my 2.2 GHz MBP.."
On Voltaic's website FAQs (..scroll down about halfway..) they show:
"How long does the conversion take?
This depends on your machine, but as a guide, on a 2.0 GHz MacBookPro with 2Gb of RAM, a 10 second AVCHD clip takes about 2 minutes to convert. In other words, it takes about 12 times as long as the original footage to convert the clip."
Thanks. That settles it. 12x is way to slow, and while iMovie can apparently import the footage faster, I want to keep the ability to transfer the footage from the camcorder's HDD to my drive and convert it later. So, AVCHD is not for me yet.

  • Adobe Premier Elements 12 , Unknown errors when rendering or saving or making DVD's

We purchased this software in January and have had little success it getting it to work as the errors which appear have no details to work on. the most popular error is unknown error , error converting, error rendering project. But this does not tell us what to do to fix the problem, and the staff are losing confidence in the software.
We have made sure that the users have local Full admin rights to the PC's the software is on.
Also we have second drives installed so they can put all the photos and videos and music locally ready to make the film,
We have made sure that the program also caches locally so there's no network traffic issues.
We have tried using the project archive before and also changing footage speeds as some images are from Ipads, some from cameras etc which have different rates
Some films have been fixed by removing the transitions which the programs supplies for use but have caused it to crash, but also the title pages have caused problems.
When we make the projects we also tell everyone to check that the render line is green and check for gaps etc,
We need the software to be more user friendly as it does not explain what to do when these errors occur so we try everything we have in the past but this is crazy as its very time consuming and defeats the object of buying special software to make the job easier as they were using movie maker before . Please can you help as we are losing total confidence with the product.

Lots more tutorial links in http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1275830
    John,
Great link.  One of the terrific things about Adobe software is how many independent and Adobe sources of information exist.  Your link is like a reference library.
My point in writing about Steve's work with Linda.com is that it is a "course".  It has an organized beginning and end.  It has a consistent teacher throughout that is following a "lesson plan".  It has a beginning that lays a foundation and continues to stack learning blocks on that foundation.  It has an end where the student has achieved a level of competence.  It is not random links to topics.
I've toured the internet and found specific video answers for various editing challanges.  But so far, I've not found any other organized courses that come close to the Lynda.com standard of teaching.

  • Suddenly I can't burn any tunes to disc.  I receive an error report - 4280.  What's the problem?  It all worked fine last week.

Suddenly I can't burn any turnes to disc.  I receive an error report - 4280.  What's the problem?  It was all fine last week.
