Apple factory reset at Genius Bar reset my MacBook 07 Mavericks OSX 10.9.2 to Lion 10.7

I scheduled an appointment at the apple store. At the genius bar, my macbook had to have a factory reset. I had Mavericks OSX 10.9.2 but the apple rep suggested i should reset to Lion 10.7. Now I'm having upgrade and installation issues. Now my purchases are not installing or upgrading to. what do i do?
BTW this was my first issue with macbook and I was very pleased with the service at the apple store.

It's poor security to post your serial number and I've asked the Hosts to remove it from this post. If they don't also remove it from your profile you should do so yourself.
Have you upgraded to Mavericks? Those of your purchases which require Mavericks won't download if you are still on Lion.

  • My new ipod touch 3g won't hold a charge. The genius bar reset my old one twice and it still wouldn't charge. They gave me a new one but it also runs out of power overnight. They suggested that I might have a corrupted file somewhere.

My new ipod 3g won't hold a charge. The genius bar reset my old iPod thinking that would solve the problem. It did not. It continued to discharge over night. They then thought I had some corrupted something, somewhere, but did nothing about it. They gave me a new iPod. It however is also discharging. If I do have a problem somewhere, why doesn't it affect my iPhone, which never seems to need a fresh charge. Please advise.

Unfortunately, I am somewhat of an expert on this issue.  The problem is with the Charge design.  I'm very sure Verizon & Samsung know all about this defect in the hardware  The issue is with a hardware switch that gets stuck and drains the battery.  It seems to be connected with the camera part.  I have exchanged my phone like 5 times, hoping for a better outcome... same problem each time.  Finally, when it was out of warranty, the only solution left was to do the hard reset thing, thereby losing all your programs, etc. You will notice after the complete reset that everything works fine for awhile, until you do something that triggers that switch, which I have tracked down to the camera.  If you don't use the camera, no problems.  One big clue, for me anyway, was when the problem is starting, I lose access to my SD memory card apps.
I HAVE managed to recover my phone just a few days ago without the hard reset, as JCO23 mentioned above.  Remove your memory card, restart your phone.  When the phone is fully booted, insert your memory card, and it will "mount" just like during startup.  Then go to your apps and delete a few at a time.  btw, it might crash during this process, in which case you need to start again.  keep removing apps a few at a time until the only apps left are the ones stored on the phone itself, not your memory card.  You will notice it is now stable, at some point.
I'm also sure by now, you've gotten the usual Verizon response to buy a new phone.  I can't wait... I am tired of resetting my phone and losing my apps all the time.

  • Will the Genius bar restore 2 MacBook pros for me?

Does anyone know if the Genius Bar helps with resetting of MacBook Pros?
I have 2 that need to be deleted and resold but I don't feel confident doing it myself.
I have no idea where the original start up disc are so I don't know any other way to remove my personal info before reselling.
    Any suggestions?

  • DVD Player swapped, but Genius Bar scratched new MacBook

Tonight I picked up my 3 week old MacBook from the Apple Store after the optical drive was swapped out for a new one (the original wouldn't play many commercial dvds - the drive would spin down 3 times and finally eject the disc).
At the Apple Store, I inserted the problem dvd to determine if the fix was complete. The dvd played fine, so I was happy to sign the paperwork and quickly return home (with two kids in tow).
Upon my return, I conducted more than a cursory glance and was startled to see my previously pristine MacBook (kept since day 1 in a Shinza Zeroshock III sleeve) scratched and scuffed on both top and bottome of the exterior.
Again, to emphasize, I am obsessive about maintaining a perfectly intact product, especially free from cosmetic damage. Plus, despite having my 3-week old MacBook already in the shop, there still was a honeymoon of possessing a brand new laptop.
I called the Apple Store and spoke with the manager. She was completely unsympathetic, placing the onus entirely on me. Since I did not bring the cosmetic damage to the attention of the store prior to signing off, she would not do anything for me.
Do I have any recourse here? Does anyone else have experience with Apple Store repairs and any subsequent cosmetic damage?
    MacBook White 2.0GHz 2GB ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Well, I got resolution on this issue(s). Apple Customer Care called at 7:14 am(?!!) and showed that it is an entirely different animal than that found at the Apple Store/Apple Care.
After explaining my situation, the rep offered one of 3 things - $50 credit toward anything on apple.com, a new, replacement MacBook, or a complete refund.
Additionally, the rep was completely sympathetic of my plight - he indicated that he himself would be upset to get a MacBook broken out of box and only to have it damaged further after repair by Apple themselves.
Keep in mind, the Apple Store supervisor asserted to me several times that her people (Genius Bar/repair) were in no way responsible for the cosmetic damage and pointedly asked me if I was so sure I didn't damage the MacBook myself. Based on her position that it's always the customer's fault, she was clear that she would do absolutely nothing.
So, she blamed me for the damage and told me I was stuck with no recompense. This in direct contrast to the 'bedside manner' of the Apple Customer Care rep and his multitude of options, without ever assigning blame to me.
I was surprised by the quickness & generousness of his offer, so I was caught off guard. Finally, torn, I chose to return the MacBook for a complete refund...return shipping paid by Apple. The only thing I'm out of is the price I paid for the Zeroshock III sleeve.
To further assuage my anxiety and painful experience, he offered that next time I purchase a computer, he'll deduct $100 from the bill.
For me, the consumer lineup of Macs are still suspect - flickering displays, terribly high temperatures, problematic optical drives, etc. I'm not a apple novice - owned 4 ipods and 2 iMacs. But the problems with the MacBook were the most disconcerting.
But because of the service I received from the top, I will always consider Apple in the future.
Best of luck to all...and for those who are having problems with ejecting dvds, swap it out for a new one under warranty. It works fine afterwards. But make sure you examine the cosmetics of your case carefully before you sign off on the work.

  • Will the Apple Genius Bar take my MacBook Pro if the keys are messed up?

I got my MacBook Pro a couple of weeks ago and its still under warrenty. A frew weeks ago, I got some weird yellow stuff on my keys. I tried to get the stuff out but i eventually broke the keys. Will apple now take my MacBook Pro?

Yes, they will. But they will state that the problem was caused by misuse and not covered by warranty. Then they will offer to repair it The Official Way by replacing the entire topcase, to the tune of $700-$900 out of your pocket. Oh, WAIT! I'ts a Retina. Scratch that, think about $1500-$2000.
If the "yellow stuff" did not trickle down into the guts of the Mac and it still works, note that replacement keycaps can be had at https://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/
And I will do my best to not imagine the nature of the yellow stuff and how it came to be spurted on the suffering keyboard.......

  • Macbook Pro remote desktop unable to connect to my office PC. Genius Bar told me the only solution was to wipe my Mac. Really??

I work remotely using my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.5.8) to connect to my office PC. I have always had issues using my "computer name" with the RDC but have no problem when using the IP address. Two weeks ago my company upgraded their server and ever since I have been unable to access the server. My coworkers (who use Macs) are not having the same problems as me. My IT guy was able to connect using my Mac, his security clearance and IP address. However, I no longer have the option of using the IP address to log in - per my IT guy. My IT guy is a PC guy so he suggested that I take my computer to Apple to see whats blocking me.
I met with Apple support at the Genius bar yesterday and was told basically it could be a problem with my computer and I needed to wipe it clean and start over. This was the proposed solution to the problem but the Mac guy I spoke with didn't seem completely sure this would solve / is the cause of the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions for figuring out what the root problem is prior to me wiping my Mac? Has anyone had issues working with remote desktop connection from their Mac connecting to a PC?
    I appreciate any help possible!

There are no songs on your iPod, right (since it was restored)?
Make sure the software on your computer is up to date...
    iTunes
    iPod Updater
    Update iPod's Software
Also, try connecting the iPod via a different USB port.
You may want to try putting the iPod in Disk Mode prior to connecting it and see if you are able to restore it (while it is in Disk Mode)...
    Putting iPod into Disk Mode
Finally, if you can't get the iPod to restore, then try connecting it and opening My Computer. Does the iPod show up in My Computer? Try right clicking it and going to Format. Does anything happen?

  • Trying to update from 10.4.11 to snow leopard, the genius bar said I should be able to do this I only need 1 GB of RAM and I have 2 GB. I put in the SL disc and my Macbook pro spits it out. What do I do without needlessly spending more money to upgrade?

So this disc won't load. I recently bought a new ipod nano, but am unable to put songs on it without the latest version of itunes.
My Macbook Pro is 2008 and has 10.4.11 the guys at the genius bar said to upgrade to snow leopard to upgrade to lion and I shouldn't have a problem. I was told I need 1GB of RAM and I have 2GBs of RAM but the disc spits out every time after about 3 minutes.
This is my computer info, please please please help me install this disc so I can use this ipod I bought from you that I've been super psyched about using.

  • Genius Bar is gone?

Rather than being upfront and honest that Apple has ended the Genius Bar, they led through an online maze of questions. At no time was ther any indication that I was not being led to a reservation, although that being where I started.
As a company, Apple has every right to end a service, especially a complimentary service. Is it it so hard to just be honest about it and not waste people's time?

Depends on how you answer the questions. As much as possible, I believe the idea is to lead you to answers you can try yourself. I tried one that would easily have me bring it in. I answered the questions as having a Mac that wouldn't power on. It only took a few web pages to get to the point of calling Apple, bringing the Mac to an Apple Store, etc. I chose to bring it in and put in a zip code (I don't actually live anywhere near California). It then shows all of the nearest Apple Stores I can choose from to set up a Genius appointment.

  • Genius bar visit with a Macbook Pro with some water damage - question

    HI,
Yesterday, I dropped a half of a cup of water and some of it went onto my macbook pro keyboard while it was on. It really didn't look like it was that much, and I did my best to dry it right away. I turned it upside down to get the water out.  I turned it off and on again and it would only boot up in safe mode and when I tried to type it was only caps even though the caps lock was off. I left it upside down on a towel, powered off, for 24 hours.  Today I took it to the Apple store to the Genius bar. .It booted up (albeit very slowly) in regular mode this time, which was an improvement.   I opened notes and typed something, still only in caps without the lock on.  The technician looked at it, and said she'd take it in the back and open it up to see what damage there was.  After a short time she came back with it closed back up and showed me pictures on her iphone of where she found water inside.  She showed me one picture where there was already mold. Could that happen that fast?   Why wouldn't she open it in front of me so i could see, or if she needed to bring it in the back to get it open, then bring it back to me so i can see the damage?   She then tells me it will cost 799 to fix unless i want to replace it and a new one is 1199.  I feel like I was a little duped. Any thoughts?  Is that the way all stores operate when they need to open a macbook?  Thanks.  Jeannie

"She showed me one picture where there was already mold. Could that happen that fast?"
Hold long do you think it takes for mold to grow?  Regardless, mold can grow quickly and, despite you taking excellent care of your computer earlier, there's always a chance that moisture had entered your computer and the mold has been there for a while.  Regardless, you can always take your computer to another Apple store, and ask for it to be opened in your presence.

  • All of my photos are missing from time machine after Apple Genius Bar factory reset my macbook

I backed up my MacBook to Time Machine so that the Apple Genius Bar could factory reset my MacBook. It was running slow and I wanted everything deleted, so I could add back just photos and music. When I tried to find the iPhoto Library pictures on the time machine they were missing. Has anyone else had this problem? I have lost all my photos since I got the computer in 2008.

What I assume happened is they erased and installed the MacintoshHD partition which includes all accounts, files and OS X.
You now have a new account or the same name, but it's actually different and can't access your files because they belong to the previous account.
I think your supposed to use Migration Assistant in your Applications > Utilties folder, then transfer the account to the machine. You log into the account and can transfer files via the Dropbox to the new user account.
Combine two+ Users Accounts on the same machine
Once the files are transferred you can delete the old account.
Next time if you just want certain files returned, use a normal external storage drive instead, then you can simply Get Info and "Ignore permissions on this volume" (aka external drive) return those certian files and do a #6 Repair Users Permissions to set the ownership to your new account.

  • Apps frozen in transition after apple genius bar did a hard reset, cant get thru app store either

Went to apple genius bar after 6 hours of trying to fix iphone 4s: couldn't send/rec photo txt msgs, get voicemail alerts, update software upgrades or back up files in icloud. They did a hard reset and fixed those issues, however the majority of my apps are frozen in either blank grey boxes or dim grey boxes with app icon showing, they saved my contacts to icloud and pics to dropbox (which is now a frozen app that I can't access). Does anyone know what my next step is? I have only had the phone 6 months and don't wanna re buy but I use for work too so need to know whats going on? Also tried to install totally different app from app store and couldn't.

    Hi there 80sbaby1!
I have an article here that can help you with the grey apps that you are seeing. It appears that those apps may not have fully re-downloaded onto your iPhone, and this article will provide some insight into resuming those downloads:

    I Also have this problem!!
In my situation, the screen simply started exhibiting the same symptoms a few weeks ago (early February) for no apparent reason.  At first I thought the screen was dead, but discovered the heat solution by accident.  Now I turn it on and keep it from going to sleep until I go to bed.  Thank goodness the battery is still awesome on this thing.
I bought it new and still has the original screen, I keep it at home (never below 62 degrees).  Coincidentally, this happened a day or two after the expiration of the warranty!!  Any help figuring this one out would be eternally appreciated.

I recently bought an iPod Touch from the US, when I was living there. I am now in India, and my iPod seems to be frozen -- the slider won't slide. So far, I've updated my iTunes and reset and restored the Touch. The problem with the simple solution: there's no Genius bar in India.
Any idea what I can do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Assuming you have Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks, restart and hold the Command and R keys.  When the reboot has completed, click Utilities on the menu bar if the utilities window has not automatically opened.  Click Terminal.  When the Terminal window has opened, type exactly the following:
    resetpassword
    and press Enter.
When the Reset Password Window opens, select the internal storage, the user, and type a new password twice.  Do not enter a hint.  Click Save.
Accept the next window that opens, and back at the Reset Password window click the lower right button to accept the reset of the user's home directory permissions.
Click the apple left side of the menu bar, Restart and you will now have a new password.

  • My Password was reset by the genius bar

I had to have my software reinstalled a few weeks ago, and they were so kind to do it at the genius bar. Unfortunately, they never told me what my admin password was. I haven't been able to download or update anything.
any idea what they generally reset it to? It was weeks ago and i have no idea what the guys name was and the stickers that came on the computer when i picked it up didn't say anything.
better yet, any idea how to reset it without knowing the current password? I live in Boston but i am in Australia for 4 months and really don't want to go through the trouble of taking it to an apple store here.
    thanks!

You could try 'admin'. If that doesn't work, you can reset your password if you have the original install disks available.
For instructions go to this page:
