Appleworks database to windows programs

I have a AW database file that I use for creating mailing labels. I am no longer the person in charge of doing the labels or mailing. Can I translate my AW file to something that can be used by several different windows apps for creating labels.
Part of the problem is that i have no idea what apps the windows users are using or the version of windows they have.

Open the database document, choose a layout that displays all the fields, and make sure no records are hidden. Select all records, and drag the selection to an empty spreadsheet window.
Now you've got the option to save the document as an ASCII text file (fields will be separated by tabs, and records by a carriage return) which any database or spreadsheet should be able to interpret, or save the document as an Excel file.

  • Database to windows/Excel?

Hi. I urgently need some help. I need to make information from an Appleworks database available to a Windows user. Is there a way to export that information to an Excel spreadsheet or workbook? Is there some other database program for PCs that I can export to? I assumed I could just cut and paste from the list view to a spreadsheet, but this garbles information. Any suggestions would help. Thanks.

I'm doing this from memory, so if this is a bit off, it's close --
I don't know of a more direct way to get this done.
1.) The first thing you need to do is "save as..." ascii text. This will give you a tab-delimited file.
2.) Still using AppleWorks, go to the File -> Open dialogue. In the bottom left portion of the box, it says document type (something like that)... use the pop-up to select Spreadsheet. Change the box on the right to "All available" (I think the default in this window is AppleWorks)...
3.) Now select the text file you saved in step 1.
4.) Your database should open as a spreadsheet.
5.) To manually re-arrange the order... click on the column header (A, B, C... etc) to highlight the place you'd like to put a column of data... then use shift+apple key + I to Insert an empty column.
6.) Click on the header of the column of data you'd like to move, copy... paste into the empty column... etc.
    7. You can go back and Delete the column you just copied from... or delete the data and reuse the space for other data.
This can be a lot like doing a puzzle! but if you plan your "moves" in advance, you can re-arrange your columns fairly quickly.
The nice thing is, you can "Save as..." an Excel file when you're done.
Hint 1: save frequently... I do after each Insert and Paste operation.
Hint 2: yes, you could use cut-and-paste instead... by copying, you can visually confirm that the data you moved is complete, aligned with the correct row, etc. THEN delete the data from the original location.

  • How Can I Run My Last Legacy Windows Program on a Macbook Air?

I recently made the leap from the dark side to a new Macbook Air.  I couldn't be happier!
I would drop my old Dell laptop in a heartbeat, but I use it to run a Windows XP Access Database (2000), which I will continue to need.  I bought my Dell laptop used, because it came with the Windows Access Database program installed, and I have neither the Windows XP OS disk nor the Access Software disk.
I am looking into running virtual Windows on the Macbook Air, but I am unsure how to move the Access Database and Windows OS without the original disks.  I assume the easiest way is to somehow clone the Windows XP OS and Access Database Program onto a USB drive, plug it into the MBA, and run it using Virtualbox, or VMWare/Parallel.
Any help from someone who has already figured out how to accomplish this?

  • Can we install oracle 10g database on Windows Vista Home Edition?

Can we install oracle 10g database on Windows Vista Home Edition?

You didn't specify which Oracle10 Edition.
In the case of SE/SE one/EE, with a paid license Supported has a mean impact on production environments with paid licenses, since you wouldn't run on an unsupported platform facing the risk of being left without technical support from Oracle in case of an emerging issue.
For the XE Edition, this is not a certified combination, since the only certified editions are the Business, Enterprise, and the Ultimate editions, but you can try it, you don't have nothing to loose, supported, certified vs. unsupported in this case makes no difference since this XE is not supported either way (no patchsets, no bug fixes, no technical support from metalink), just an AS IS free software.
On the license agreement terms displayed when you download the XE software it states:
    "No Technical Support
Our technical support organization will not provide technical support, phone support, or updates to you for the programs licensed under this agreement."
    and
"THE PROGRAMS ARE PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. WE FURTHER DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS AND IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE."
In case someone would be able to win a trial against oracle due to damage from the use of this software, the amount paid at maximum is 1,000.00 USD, not enough to even pay the lawyer's lunches.
For the XE users the primary source of 'kind of support' is the oracle forums, either the installation forum, the general database or the specialized XE forum.
Of course if this is for your own personal use for learning and testing and there are no third parties you could damage by doing this and if you don't have a paid license for this installation you may try it, but don't expect the Enterprise Manager to behave as defined by the manual, most of it won't work since the Home Edition doesn't have the privileges required for EM to work.
If this is your personal computer and when you bought it the computer provider installed from factory Home Edition, and if you want something to work there, you can try to install a Virtual Machine and install Oracle 10g on a supported guest OS.

  • One page "report" from an AppleWorks database???

I'm wondering if it is possible to create a one-page "report" (layout?) that can display some summary values calculated from my database. I am currently using a database to keep track of the students in a small school, and I would like to be able to print up a page that shows each classroom number with teacher name, followed by a number of students in that class. The database records are the students, and each record includes a class number and teacher name. I feel like I have a decent understanding of how AppleWorks databases work, but while this seems like a reasonable thing that I would like to do, I can't think of how to go about doing it. I'm starting to think that maybe I have to have a second, separate database for the teachers and track the number of students per class that way. But AppleWorks doesn't have a way of sharing information across two databases, does it?
    Ugh.

    Hi Terry,
I'm wondering if it is possible to create a one-page "report" (layout?) that can display some summary values calculated from my database. I am currently using a database to keep track of the students in a small school, and
It should be possible, assuming I understand the question.
I would like to be able to print up a page that shows each classroom number with teacher name, followed by a number of students in that class.
Do you want a list of some of the students in the class, or do you want a number showing how many students are in that class? My assumption is the second.
The database records are the students, and each record includes a class number and teacher name.
As you say "A" class number and (A) teacher name, I'm assuming that there is only one teacher's name associated with each student, and only one class number associated with each student (and I suspect that all students with the same Teacher have the same class number).
AppleWorks doesn't have a way of sharing information across two databases, does it?
    No.
Given the above assumptions, here's a plan:
Existing fields (ALL Text type fiends):
    'Name' (containing student's name)
    'Room' (containing class number)
    'Teacher' (containing teacher's name)
New fields (ALL Summary type fields. Formula given after field name):
    'Namesum' COUNT('Name')
    'Roomsum' 'Room'
    'Teachsum' 'Teacher'
    Make a new Blank Layout.
Insert Part... Subsummary when sorted by 'Teacher'
    Insert Part... Header
Insert the three new Summary type fields onto the new layout and place them in a horizontal line in the Subsummary part.
Edit the labels, then place place them in the Header part and directly above the field to which each applies. Add any other information you want in the header using a text frame.
Adjust the part boundary to give some white space below the three fields.
Drag the Body boundary up to the boundary above it to delete the body part from the layout.
    Return to Browse mode.
    To see the results:
    Sort the database by Teacher.
Check Page View in the Window menu.

    Barry

  • OS 10.5.4 and Appleworks Database

I just purchased a new iMac 24 inch. I also have a bunch of old databases from Appleworks 6. Can I install Appleworks on the new iMac so I can use the older databases? I didn't realize iWorks wouldn't have a database application. If I can't install Appleworks, is there another program (Filemaker?) which might be able to do the job?

A quick search in this forum will find multiple posts, a lot by me, that verify that AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9 work very well on the newest Macs with the newest OS.
AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9 run very well on an Intel Mac, even better than on a PPC Mac. AppleWorks 6.2.7 will, too, but it was very buggy & not recommended. You can use the migration assistant to transfer programs & settings from your old Mac to the new one. If you do this, or if you manually transfer the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from one to the other, do not transfer any AppleWorks preferences other than the Button Bar preferences (if you have customized the Button Bars). Let AppleWorks build new, clean preferences.
To remain within the Apple software license, you should remove the copy from the old Mac as the license states the software can only exist on one machine at a time.
AppleWorks 6.2.9 (the current version) can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6, so a good choice would be AppleWorks 6.2.4. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest version stable in OS X. Avoid 6.2.7 - very, very, very buggy! Hardcore Mac is selling AppleWorks 6.2.4 the last time I looked. You also can sometimes find AppleWorks 6 on eBay, but it might be difficult to be sure it's no newer than 6.2.4 and has an OS X-aware installer.

  • Appleworks Database vs. Microsoft Access

I currently manage my database on a PC with Microsoft Access. I would like to switch the data to my new iMac (1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo, OS 10.4). Can anyone tell me more about the database program in Appleworks? Can you customize the fields (to include more than just the basic name, address, etc fields) or are they pre-set? Also, can you create searches within the program (ie to find a record based on a last name)? I am trying to avoid buying FileMaker Pro because of it's higher cost. Any information and details about the program's capabilities would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Yes, you can do all of those things: define fields including name, type..., and you can create/save searches on the database. To see examples of people doing these things do a search in Google using a phrase like:
    appleworks +database +tutorial
You're probably aware of this, but I'll mention it just in case: AppleWorks is no longer bundled with any Macs, and must be purchased separately.
Also, AppleWorks has a flat-file database. This is basically a single table of records. However, Access is a relational database and creates multiple tables of records which can be linked together using key fields. If your Access database is a relational database then you will have to redesign it work in AppleWorks. That is, collapse it all into one big table. If you're reasonably serious about databases, then you'll find FileMaker is a better choice. It is a relational database very similar to Access, and will create smaller more efficient databases than AppleWorks. NB There are other relational databases available on the Mac too. So search VersionTracker.com for the alternative products.
Lastly, AppleWorks will not open your Access database. You will have to save the data from the Access database into a tab-separated value text format so it can be imported into AppleWorks. Because you're saving the data into a text format you will not be able to use the screens you've created in Access, and will have to recreate them in AppleWorks.

  • Using appleworks database to create email list

    Hello,
I have just created a list of about 800 contacts in an appleworks database that includes their email address. Now I would like to be able to send out an email to many of my contacts.
How can I use appleworks to create a mailing list? Or do I need to somehow export this information to the Address Book program or the Mail program?
I would appreciate any advice you have.
    Thank you!

I do this occasionally to notify people about updates for my software. I just copy and paste the email addresses.
That is, I change the layout of the database to List, select and highlight the entire column containing the email addresses, copy it, then go to email program, and paste into the To: field of an email. All the email addresses are pasted nicely into the field, separated by commas.

  • Vista: use the windows program manager to execute operating system commands

attempting to run forms 6 on vista... the forms app attempts a call sqlplus using the host builtin to populate some tables before calling the report.
in windows vista i get a message box indicating "use the windows program manager to execute operating system commands".
is this windwos vista message? would this have to do with permissions?
any insight most appreciated and thanks in advance.

    I don't know about the HOST-problem, but..
the forms app attempts a call sqlplus using the host builtin to populate some tables before calling the report. What about putting the logic from the SQL*Plus-scripts into a database-procedure and call that instead. I think,, with the current approach you will get problems at least when you have to migrate to Web (e.g. Forms 10g).

  • Converting from Appleworks Database to ?

Others have asked this question, but I’m not seeing any definitive answers. I see that some people are having no problem with their Appleworks docs after converting to Leopard, others are having big problems. I don’t want to take any chances, seeing that Appleworks is on its way out anyway, and I’ll have to face this sooner or later. What can I do with my Appleworks database? Is there any way to convert it over to iWork, Office, or something else? If not, I’ll just have to take a few days “off” to do it all by hand and create an entirely new database...but what would be the best program to do that, and be able to do all that the Appleworks database can do?

There just isn't a replacement for AppleWorks' database that can do even half of what AppleWorks does. I've been moving most of my databases to Numbers. I can sort & filter the data but there is no way to merge anything with Pages. I've left feedback for both Pages & Numbers asking for this functionality.
To move the data to Numbers, I view my AppleWorks database as a list, select all, copy & then paste into a Numbers table. This retains any formatting I've applied.

  • What can replace Appleworks database?

My non-profit business database has been on Appleworks forever! Mainly that means names and addresses and record of monthly contributions, from which I send a mail merge letter of acknowledgement to contributors each month. Now I have read that Appleworks will not work on Lion. If I understand correctly, Bento can’t do mail merge with auto fill-in of addresses and other personalized info. So what can I transfer all this info to? And HOW will I transfer years of records on my Appleworks database?

The only program with anything like the functionality of the AppleWorks database is FileMaker Pro. It's expensive, and has a steep learning curve, but can do almost anything the AW database can plus a good deal more. It's also pretty well the industry standard so it's not likely to go away.
However it can't import AW dateabases; you have to export them as ASCII text and import that, which means you will have to recreate layouts and calculation fields.
    Please see this page:;

  • Can I transfer appleworks databases to some other app in order to print mailing labels?

Can I transfer appleworks databases to Bento or elsewhere on my new MacBook Pro in order to print mailing labels, or do I have to re-enter all the information?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available - the newPages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote again the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first. Nothing will open AW database documents.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: it seems complex; however Snow Leopard Server may still be available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price and this makes the process a lot easier. I haven't tried either method: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.

  • Printing calendar of dates from Appleworks database

Is there a calendar program that will print a monthly calendar and pull birthdays and anniversaries from an appleworks database file (or from a bento file)? This is much like mailmerge does, except I want the calendar date to pull all records with that date as a birthday or anniversary.

Actually, it's quite different from a mail merge, and quite a bit more complicated.
A mail merge inserts data from a specific field into a specific location a word processor document, and produces a separate document for each visible record in the database.
Using the AppleWorks database, you could get separate lists of anniversaries and birthdays for a single month, then use cut and paste to transfer those into a (spreadsheet) calendar either one at a time or collectively as a list below the calendar grid.
I see a few issues that may arise with long names and multiple b'days/annivs on the same date.
Post a reply if you want to pursue this.

  • Exporting AppleWorks database to PC

I am a membership secretary for a community org, and have worked hard to create a useful member database on AppleWorks 6. Now I need to resign. When a successor volunteers he/she will probably have a PC, not an Apple. (sad face)
What software do they need to allow me simply to transfer the database to their computer?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   AppleWorks 6

It is highly unlikely that a PC user will be using a database. Almost every PC user uses Excel as a database as well as a spreadsheet. There really isn't any "structure & all" to it. ASCII text will separate each field in the database by tabs & each record by a return. It will not retain any field labels. This can be opened or imported by any spreadsheet or database. You can test this for yourself by opening the saved ASCII text file as a spreadsheet in AppleWorks.
Some PC users will use Microsoft Works which does have a database. MSWorks can also open or import your ASCII text file in its database or spreadsheet modules. The only way to retain field labels in transfering a database to another program would be to save the database as a DBF. AppleWorks 6 can't save as DBF. If you have a Mac that can use Classic and you have AppleWorks 5 you can save the AppleWorks 6 database as AppleWorks 5, open it in AppleWorks 5 & then Save As… DBF in AppleWorks 5.
When saving any "foreign" file format from AppleWorks, either 5 or 6, you will have to add the appropriate 3-letter file extension to the file name. AppleWorks won't do it for you. Use .txt for ASCII or plain text or .dbf for the DBF files.

  • Is there anybody out there who is still using Appleworks Database and is there a good alternative?

Is there anybody else out there who is still using Appleworks Database and is there a good alternative?

There is no replacement program that will directly read Appleworks database files.
    You have two options:
    1.  Continue to use Appleworks 6.2.9, which requires Rosetta installed in Snow Leopard, or the access to Rosetta by installing Snow Leopard Server in virtualization for use in Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks:
    2.  Export your database information into a common export function (such as delimited ASCII text file) and build a new database file in an alternate database program (such as Filemaker Pro) and import your information into it.  More information here:
