Arabic Font Problem

Hello,
I've been told by my client that my arab text is not
rendering correctly. The problem occurs where an incorrect 'alef'
appears next to a 'lam'. Now I'm not an arab speaker or reader
unfortunately, so I really don't understand exactly what this
means, but its incorrect. I've had a good look at my character
settings, and I'm not seeing any extra properties that I can set to
correct this. An extract of my code is below that relates to
character format.
charFormat.color = fontColorIs;
charFormat.fontFamily = fontIs;
charFormat.fontSize = fontSizeIs;
charFormat.locale = "ar";
charFormat.ligatureLevel = LigatureLevel.EXOTIC;
charFormat.lineHeight = "160%";
charFormat.fontLookup = FontLookup.EMBEDDED_CFF;
charFormat.kerning = Kerning.ON;
paraFormat.textAlign = TextAlign.RIGHT;
paraFormat.direction = "rtl";
I've also put a some screen shots of the problem and the font
online at
http://www.kenmacleod.com.au/adobe
- these 2 images were from the client and explain the issue.
Adobe Arabic is working and rendering correctly, so I'm
presuming that it is a font issue, and the font I'm trying to make
work, just can't work with Flash even though its an OTF.
I am wondering if maybe I've missed something. It doesn't
appear to be a embedding issue either as I'm embedding the entire
font via Gumbo.
If anyone has had luck with other Arabic fonts rendering
correctly please let me know what they are.
Thanks, Ken.

Just as a follow up to this problem if anyone else is
experiencing something similar. We ended up contacting the actual
developers of the Arabic font (
http://www.grapheast.com).
They described it as a Unicode issue and said they would have to
update their font, which they promptly did in about an hour and
fortunately for us, it worked straight up.
http://www.brashbrands.com/ar/
We had some unexpected issues with the Chinese version of the
site too, I didn't do any research on font file sizes, but with the
chinese language having so many characters, the font files seemed
to vary from about 7MB to 15MB. Once squashed into a swf via Gumbo,
the smallest versions were around the 4MB mark, but these were
dropping characters all over the place. The 15MB looked great, but
only came down to about 10MB, which is obviously way to big to
embed. We tried just using 'sans' but some system fonts were
dropping characters also, especially when we needed chinese
characters next to punctuation. The result ended up being using a
program called Fondu and extracting the mac system font Hei.dfont.
The font size of the Gumbo swf ended up as 3MB and it worked
perfectly. Details of the how to with Fondu are
http://aralbalkan.com/1897
(thanks Aral Balkan and Fondu).

  • Arabic font problem in Indesign cs4

    I was using Indesign CS2 and just upgraded to CS4. I was heavily using "traditional arabic" font in CS2 without any problem.
    For those who don't know, in arabic, each letter is represented differently according to its place inside a word. Almost all letters have 4 different forms, at the begining, in the middle at the end and alone.
    After the upgrade I can insert only the letter at the begining form. I can clearly see all fonts in all forms in glpyhs table.
    Any suggestion ?
    Thank you

    This not a locked Windows font because I was using it in Indesign CS2 without any problem.
    In Help>About section all I see, is CS4 6.0. So this in not a Middle Eastern version.
    For the moment I found the following solution :
    I found an Open Type Arabic Font.
    When I type something with this font "propositional forms" setting is set to "General", this is the default setting and I was unable to set "Automatic" as default. First I type something in Arabic then I select the text and set "propositional forms" setting to "Automatic".Yes it is a little bit cumbersome but  this is the only solution I found.
    I could send font files to anybody if you want to try them . It is not allowed to send them as attachment

    Problem with Arabic font: In certain contexts, when writing Arabic with vowel signs (fatha, damma, kasra, sukun) a sequence of sukun + fatha/damma etc. would reverse automatically. Is this a known bug?
    Example: عَيْنٌ
    would automatically convert to عَيُنْ
    Funnily, it doesn't seem to happen here, but it does when entering text in a web interface (using Firefox, font Bayan) and when using Text Edit.
    Seems to be a problem of a specific font, as e.g. Arial MS Unicode works fine. Any hints?
    Thank you!

    You can't do Arabic on MS Word for Mac.  This app has never supported RTL scripts, so you need to use something else.  Mellel is best, but Pages 5, TextEdit, Nisus Writer, Open/LibreOffice should work OK.
    You switch between languages by using the "flag" menu at the top right of the screen or by using the keyboard shortcuts apple/command plus space.  Go to system prefs/keyboard/shortcuts to make sure that is activated.
    To see which key does what, you use Keyboard  Viewer.

    You place vowels on letters by typing the key for the vowel after the key for the letter.  The vowels are on the option/alt keys, option/alt + a gives you َ

  • Arabic / Hindi digits problem with Myriad Arabic font

    Hi,
    In Indesign Middle Eastern version we have the option to change the digits (numerals) between Arabic and Hindi (1234/١٢٣٤).
    I having a problem with flipping the digits to Arabic (Latin typface) instead of Hindi (Arabic typface) when typing using Arabic input language in my keyboard.
    The feature works when you type using English as an input language but as soon as you change your input language to Arabic the numbers are typed in Hindi digits and the feature of changing them to Arabic digits (Latin typface) doesn't work.
    I'm using "Arabic Myriad" font for my project but I tested "Adobe Arabic" font too and both have the same problem, I'm not sure if the problem is from Indesign or in the fonts?!
    Any help is appreciated

    but as soon as you change your input language to Arabic the numbers are typed in Hindi digits and the feature of changing them to Arabic digits (Latin typface) doesn't work.
    Which "feature of changing them"?
    If I use the numeric keypad and the English keyboard, the digits keyed respect the language setting of the text in ID. If I use the numeric keypad and the Arabic keyboard... the digits respect the language setting of the text in ID. If I use the flyout from the Character panel to change to Arabic numerals, or Hindi numerals, or Farsi numerals, then all of the numerals change accordingly, no matter what language setting I use. Were you already aware that language is a character-level formatting quality in ID?
    My hunch is that you're not changing the Language setting of the text. If I'm wrong: does it happen in all files? Only new files? Only one file? Also, which platform are you using? Windows or Mac? Which version?

  • Problem with Embedded "Adobe Arabic" Font

    I realy have defficulty getting embedded "Adobe Arabic" font to work, beleive me, I have tried lots of different approaches, but it won't join the glyphs properly using it as Embedded font.
    Please try typing the word مُعَلِم into the textlayout component. notice this words uses the combination of letters and ligatures. if you choose to use the "Adobe Arabic" as a system Font assuming you have already installed the Adobe Arabic into the system, it shows as مُعَلِم, which is correct.
    However if you choose to use the Adobe Arabic font as an Embeded font, it displays the word as the above but puts spaces between each letter.
    I have tried brian's solution "Using a font SWF in a Flash Profession CS4 application" the World Language application, and still shows wrong and it does not join the glyphs properly if and only if you use letter and ligatures like the word مُعَلِم.
    in your example you have used the word الإخاء which renders properly but try using مُعَلِم and see what happens.
    Please have a look at the attached file for more information.

  • TLF in Flash CS4 showing ??? with Arabic fonts

    I got TLF to function on my work computer (XP-32) with no trouble.
    However, at home (XP-64), when I type in the TLF box in CS4, I only get ????? showing.If I copy and paste Arabic from Notepad into the text box, the arabic text shows up with no problem. I've tried using Adobe Arabic, Transparent Arabic, and Standard Arabic font with the same results.
    I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when I first installed the TLF component, it set it up in my Flash CS3 extension manager. After deleting it from there, I installed it again to the CS4 extension manager.
    Has anyone else had this situation? I can't figure out why my work computer and home computer are behaving differently.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi azeem
    I have been learning how to deal with arabic fonts now in flash10 and from what i have read up so far adobe has stopped updating the TLF component and it is been said it will only reappear with flash11 again. So if there is a bug with 64 bit os , then it is stuck like that for now. Another point to mention while using the forums and from personal testing is that the adobe arabic font will not handle diacritics correctly. You should try use Arial version 4 (the arial that ships with vista , the arial that shipped with xp is also faulty).

  • Arabic font become smaller in Pages' PDF in Yosemite

    It seems that Pages (5.5.1) in Yosemite has a bug that makes some fonts become small when exporting or making PDF.
    I have this problem, both in Adobe Arabic OTF font and a font that an OTF font that I've made myself.
    Does anybody has any solution or experience about this issue?

    First, Thank you Tom. Yes, it is a bug. Actually the only problem is that the glyphs are smaller, otherwise the correct instant of the characters are used.
    And then, thank you Jeff. At least now I know what causes it. The UPM of my font as well as Adobe Arabic fonts are set to 2048 due to complexity of the shapes. But there I have other TTF with the same UPM that works fine. So I guess this is something that happens to only OTF fonts in Pages.
    At least now I know what is the cause. I hope Apple would solve this. Thank you!

  • Arabic fonts in InDesign CS6

    I¹m looking for some help regarding Arabic fonts on Mac InDesign CS6 (Adobe Creative Suite 5.5).
    I¹ve designed a company profile in English and they need it to be translated into Arabic for their Middle Eastern branch. They¹ve sent the correct Arabic copy in a Word document but the moment I copy it into InDesign it corrupts and becomes illegible. I¹ve looked on the Adobe and Apple forums but can¹t find a solution for the problem.
    This is a Mac problem because one of my friends have InDesign for Windows and the font works 100% on her version. I think the problem is that the Arabic font was written for Windows and is therefore not compatible with Mac.

    This is a Mac problem because one of my friends have InDesign for Windows and the font works 100% on her version.
    Mmmmaybe.
    Can you tell us the name of the font?  In which version of Word is the Arabic rendering correctly? Do you have a known-good PDF to compare your Arabic against? If not, how do you know that the Arabic is rendering correctly anywhere?
    It was my understanding that Mac Word simply can't handle right-to-left scripts like Arabic, so it's possible that your translation provider has used a very old font that fakes the cursive connections between letters in Arabic. It could also be the case that the font is Arial - versions of Arial installed with Office for Mac traditionally don't have Arabic glyphs because Mac Office has not offered RTL support for Arabic. But the font technologies used in Windows for Arabic support (both in TrueType and OpenType) do, in fact, work on the Mac, assuming the font was made by someone who knew what they were doing.
    Both Peter and shnath offer good advice. I am a big proponent of World Tools, but in CS6 if you have a correctly formatted Word document you should be able to just place it and get RTL behaviors, if the font used has Arabic support.
    Lastly:
    I¹ve designed a company profile in English and they need it to be translated into Arabic for their Middle Eastern branch.
    I don't do much commercial work myself (I'm more of a nonprofit, social-service guy) but a "company profile" sounds to me like something that should be typeset by a graphic designer who actually reads the language. You are working on some kind of marketing or business speech intended for distribution in a culture where good calligraphy and typography are very important. It is unfortunately very easy for those of us who are not immersed in these calligraphic traditions to accidentally do something equivalent to formatting a press release in sixteen-point Comic Sans. So if you keep posting in this thread we can get you to the point where your Arabic copy is legible, and probably to the point where it's not embarassing. But if your clients need anything more than basic legibility, you may want to hand this off to someone who is an in-language professional.

  • MS Office Mac wreaks havoc with arabic fonts on OSX

    i always have this problem when installing the dreaded MS Office for Mac on any OSX system and that is that Arabic fonts that work fine start going haywire because MS Office Mac installs some funky corrupt fonts.
    Does anyone know how to go back to the original pre-office installed fonts that came with OSX snow leopard? im guessing i have to use the install discs or something.
    i've tried to selectively figure out what Office has installed and remove them and its a pain.
    on a related note, will Office do fine if I dont allow it to install its own fonts on my system?

    tom -
    i am not sure of the specifics but here's some info from a poster on a board:
    "2) There is an entirely separate issue about viewing Arabic in Safari. Installing MS Office for Mac also installs Office fonts on your Mac. Two of those fonts (specifically Arial and Times New Roman) will corrupt Safari's ability to display Arabic properly and you will wind up with disjointed Arabic text like ? ? ? instead of ???
    To fix this all you need to do is delete the offending fonts from your Mac (go to Library>Preferences>Fonts and simply trash Arial and Times New Roman. Your mac will then revert to using the original versions of those fonts that came with your system -- in other words, you'll still have access to the Arial font in Microsoft Word and other Office apps, but Safari will display Arabic correctly."
    http://www.emiratesmac.com/forums/arabic/604-writing-displaying-arabic-my-mac-3. html
    and there's some useful information here as well http://www.smi.uib.no/ksv/ArabicMac.html .
    are there any other font folders that i should time-machine restore besides the two aptly named ones i mentioned in /Library and /user/Library ?
    and on a related note, there was an option in the custom settings of the MS Mac Office installation to install 'fonts' (or was it 'additional fonts' ?) that, in hindsight, maybe i should have unchecked. if i ever have to reinstall office one day i will pay more attention to this as well as have my fonts backed up for sure.

Text on some buttons/display items is ok but some buttons/display items have above said problem in same form. Strange problem.

    Hi again - i logged to metalink and saw, that there is a workaround for this.
    The problem is solved, when I edit the form's package and comment the RETURNING clause.
    It is simple for me, but if I give to other the ability to create forms, should I repair every of them ?
    Is there a patch for this ? The problem with dblinks and forms is old, isn't it ?
    Thanks for explanation.

    I got problems with PDFs with Arabic fonts?
    Is it  a frequent??

    What specific problems are you having? In the general case, we know that Hebrew, Arabic, and other non-Latin fonts do properly display with the Adobe Reader assuming of course that the fonts are properly embedded in the PDF files.
