Broadband ok, no dial tone and line sounds engaged...

Bt say the problem is in my property.
I have checked the test socket and no joy.
could the fault be with the first box that the line meets when coming into the property?
I have had a problem with it before.
Yorkiebear

Hi. I have exactly the same problem since yesterday (or maybe longer) - there is no dial tone and the line is engaged when called, but the adsl broadband is still working.
I bought a corded phone today and neither phone works directly in the test socket (there are no extensions anyway). This seems to point to it being a bt problem but the first engineer appointment available is in over a weeks time so if there is anything else i can do in the meantime i'm keen. Also is there anything else I can do to ensure that its not a problem on my side to avoid the charge.
In fact this is the second time this has happened recently, last time was a few weeks ago and it cleared up within about 24hrs...

  • Painfully slow broadband (plus losing dial tone)

    Hi everyone,
On Saturday night our broadband connection plummeted from a usual download speed of 200kbps (download speed, not connection) to what is now struggling to hit 15-20kbps. Along with the much slower broadband our phone has also been cutting out/losing dial tone/going incredibly quiet.
We called BT last night, told them the issues and after 45 minutes we we're told that the line was fine, it was an issue on our end and nothing else would be done.
Well this morning I spent a couple of hours messing around, connecting the router and phone to the master socket using multiple new ADSL filters, multiple other cables, everything I can think of and nothing has helped. It isn't just a WIFI issue either because although we use a few WIFI systems (android smartphone, Xbox 360 and a laptop) my main PC is connected to the router via an ethernet cable.
I'm lost for ideas though - I'm disabled and I'm unable to get out of the house often (trying to sort out the router this morning has even left me with a fair deal of pain) so the internet is my connection to the outside world via gaming and stuff, but since Saturday night I've been unable to do pretty much anything due to this issue and I'm just lost so please, if anyone can help I would appreciate any advice I can get right now.

Thanks a lot for the help so far, however I'm still having problems ...
So we did as you advised and reported the fault, then a couple of days ago (wednesday night-thursday) the phone line improved, as did the routers connection to the internet. The router is now connecting at at about 1.8mbps and the quiet line test on the phone is completely silent ... however my download speed hasn't seen any kind of improvement at all, even before all this rain and flood warning.
Could this be a problem with the router itself? Like I said originally, I've got multiple devices connected both wirelessly and wired (multiple cables tested) and according to the router and BTs speedtest it's connected perfectly, so I'm now just wondering if it could be a problem with the router not relaying the data fast enough?
It's been close to a week since this started so I'm just completely clueless - for someone who has problems leaving the house and connecting to the outside world by other means it's been a really tough week.
Thanks again for the help anyway.

  • Broadband working, no dialing tone, unable to make...

    1)
    Removed the filter:
Plugged phone into wall socket - dialing tone works fine.
    2)
    Removed wall socket front
Plugged phone into test socket - dialing tone works fine.
    3)
Purchased new filter. Connect phone and broadband.
Broadband works, still no dialing tone
    4)
Tried filter in test socket, still no dial tone
    What should I try next?
    Thanks

Are you trying just the phone and the new filter by themselves into the NTE5 test socket or do you still have your router/hub connected, the thunderstorm may have burnt out your router/hub?
If it's not connected then I would report a fault to your service provider, which I assume is BT seen as you are asking on here.

  • Dial Pad and Unlock Sounds Gone

In the last two days the sounds tied to my phone's dial pad and the 'click' sound associated with unlocking the screen have dissappeared.  I have checked the settings and all seems to be correct.  Aany ideas on this?  I have tried a full shutdown/restart with no luck.

Well even though I did NOT have the phone in silent mode, I moved it to silent and then back and just like that the sound was back.  Very odd

  • Can't call out and no dial tone

I was told that there is a problem with a cable in the Brooklyn, NY area, but I can not find any other person in my neighborhood who has the problem.
The phone was working fine Sunday night and then Monday morning no dial tone and I am dead in the water.
I use my phone for my business and contacts, now nothing works properly.
I called Verizon and was told that they would have it resolved by the 4th of July (2012) and that this problem is affecting about 1200 customers in my area.
I called a couple of hours later and was then told that the service would not be repaired until July 10th 2012, which is totally unacceptable.
Is there anyone in the Brooklyn area having the same problem. Why can't Verizon just bypass the bad lines, just to keep the service up and running.
Where can you go to complain about this.  It seems my only option now is to move my number to another carrier, which I don't want to do.
Please let me know, if anyone has any ideas.
    Thanks

  • No dial tone for the second time now

    Hi guys,
Back in late November 2013 I discovered that the phone was not working correctly that being no dial tone and a faint outside crackling noise coming through, I couldn't call out or receive calls however when I called my phone the line rang fine but it was not coming through the headset, My broadband was still working perfectly fine so I instantly thought it was the headset and ordered a new one only to discover that it in fact wasn’t the problem at all. I began to call BT to report the fault and was directed straight to an Indian call centre the guy when through normal line testing faults only to come back with no faults found I told him that on my mobile my house is ringing but none of my headsets old or new was physically ringing we then went on to do the master test socket test and again same problem. After that he arranged an engineer to come out to have a look and was told the usual ''you may be charged if you have caused the fault'' blah blah now into December and I finally get an engineer out to have a look the engineer when on to say that whoever initially installed the face plate put a faulty one and that was the problem but if that was the case how had I been able to use my house phone perfectly fine prior to this problem? I asked the engineer if I would be charged for this call out and his said NO as it was not my fault, all things fixed and working.
My January bill came and what do I see £179 bill I look at the bill to see I’ve been charged for the engineer callout, furious I call BT in which this time I’m directed to English speaking people at last. I explain all of the above to the operator and go on to tell them I was told there would be no charge so they check the engineer report and then they tell me the engineer reported that the faceplate was damaged, I’m then question by the operator and asked how I had damaged the faceplate I told him what the engineer told me and that my master socket is up high on my window seal out of reach of my son so there was no way he damaged it, they told me they would look into for me and get in contact within 5 days. 5 days pass and I get the call saying sorry for mistake your money will be back in your account in 3 days well that’s great news.
Now I’m having the very same problem with my phone line no dial tone slight crackling sound but this time when I ring from my mobile may house phone rings fine but when I answer it up it continues to ring even though I’ve pressed the accept button I also cannot decline the call from the headset it really frustrating, I’ve tried to get though to BT but the queue times are just ridiculous even tried the call back feature and yet 3 hours later still nothing I’m not going to pay for a service I’m not receiving and I’m most definitely not going to pay engineer charges only to be refunded 10 days later a complete waste of time. I need my phone line fixed please can someone help me out here and give me some advice.
    Many Thanks
    Mike

I have the exact same problem (also my second time in 4 months). Very frustrating as this is our business phone and it is frustrating knowing people are calling us but we can't pick up the calls ! More frustrating that its almost 2 days and no sign of an engineer !

  • Strange dial tone

Hello, just noticed recently when I pick up the phone I have a strange dial tone.
It sounds like the normal one but then the tone lowers, then comes back up, then down again.  Kind of like a siren on a police car/ambulance only not as loud.
Any idea what could cause it, there is only one socket in the house, and we only bought a new phone back in October, broadband speeds all seem fine and I have removed the sky box to also see but its still there.
We have an overhead line and some quite heavy rain a few nights back, was wondering had the connection box on the side of the house got damp and would I be charged for someone to come and look at it?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
I've been researching this issue on the internet and came across this post as it sounds exactly what has happened to us.
On bank holiday monday, we set our phone on divert #21# as usual when we spend a day out. We came home only to find we had a strange ring tone (sounds like a siren) and we can't make any outgoing call, nor can we switch off the divert. Even though we can't make any outgoing calls, the divert still works so we can take calls on our mobile.
It is very strange. We have reported the fault with BT who have checked the line remotely and say it looks fine. We have test our internal equipment, and also tested a phone through the emergency socket which runs into the master socket. We still get the same ring tone.
BT.com/faults suggest now that it may be something not right near our home.
Did anyone on this post get their issue resolved? What was the issue?
    Many thanks!

  • I have a wireless home phone connect device. Can call out on it when dial tone present, but most times cannot receive calls since purchase. Anyone else having a  problem with their home connect device?

Have had Wireless Home Phone connect device refreshed and updated three times since I purchased it in September 2014. Last tech I worked with on it initialized an NRB to check the network. I checked the location of the tower, which is less than one mile up the hill with clear line of site. The device always has two antennas on it. The device is great when it does work, but most of the time it rings three times and then jumps to an automated message saying the person I am calling is not available. I've actually gone up there several times to try an fix the device, but always end up calling a Verizon tech who has me unplug it, pull the battery, and they do some network stuff and then we turn it back on and it works. After the last time on 10/02/14, I called it and got the message. I drove up there, 100 miles one way, and called it while standing in the room. Got the same message. I picked up the phone, heard a dial tone and dialed my phone and it range through. I hung that phone connected to the device and call it using my cell phone. It rang through. I went home and tried to call it the next day. Again it did not ring through and I got the message after three rings. I call another phone at the facility and had them call me on my mom's phone and it is fixed it again. The fix last for a day or two and then it's broken again, like it is today. If it's a network problem then it must be fairly close to the area because no matter what we do it fails again. So much for the 99.98% reliable. This thing is a piece of junk!
I purchased this device and put it on my plan so that my mother who we placed in a home at 96 years old would have a phone connection that she could use and wouldn't flip her out. My family and her family has not been able to faithfully connect with her at this critical time in her life. I am giving Verizon 10 more days to figure this out and then I am going to ask for a total refund not to mention how much time and travel I have put into this piece of junk. Either the home connect transceiver is broken or the network is broken. Why should I pay close to $70 for a service that has not worked more than several days out of 35 days? Also I have spent close to three hours on the phone with decent technical people, but it's my time. I should send Verizon a bill for every time I have gone up there to fix this device as well.
What perplexes me is that a regular cell phone would have sufficed, but because Verizon has to have a data connection that is not available on a regular phone and it was going to cost me $30/month, I decided to go with the home connect. Seemed like a nice solution for an older person who would have a hard time using a cell phone and keeping it charged. Plus after all the fees for getting it connected, it only cost $20/month. That would be a pretty good thing, IF IT WORKED....... The other thing that irks me is, why do I have to pay for a data connection when the cell phone Verizon originally provided can't even access the network. What ever happened to adding a phone line for $10 bucks\ month? All I wanted was a simple phone. She would not be able to use anything more complex and all she needs is a phone line period.
I have no problem paying for something that works and does what it should, but this is ridiculousness. The MTF on this device is somewhere around 1 to 2 days. Out of 365 days that's about a 96.5% failure rate....... Want my advice? Get ride of this device. It sucks and it's bad marketing.

        jsavage9621,
It pains me to hear about your experience with the Home Phone Connect.  This device usually works seamlessly and is a great alternative to a landline phone.  It sounds like we've done our fair share of work on your account here.  I'm going to go ahead and send you a Private Message so that we can access your account and review any open tickets for you.  I look forward to speaking with you.

  • Internal modem not detecting dial tone

I have an iMac G3 CRT 333MHz (Lime) which is having trouble connecting to my dial-up internet connection. I am fearing that my internal modem is 'burnt out', and am wondering if anyone out there has any additional troubleshooting tips, or any advice on purchasing a new external modem.
The trouble started after a lightning storm, which also disrupted internet connections for my roommate's PC (I don't know exactly how he fixed his, but he is connected via a DSL modem and says he simply restored some modem drivers). I have noticed, however, that he removed his 56k modem...
When I attempt to dial-up from my Mac, I get a message stating "Modem did not detect a dial-tone or the line is currently in use..." I have checked and double checked that the phone line does indeed have a dial tone, and tried connecting through through various outlets throughout the house. I've disconnected all other phone hardware (except the DSL filters) and reached the same result.
I am currently running OSX (10.3.9), and also attempted to dial out after restarting in 9.2.2. (Same result). After that, I dug out my install CD and reinstalled 10.3 (same result)
From each OS, I've run system profiler and recieved no unusual information about the internal modem. The computer definitely senses that I HAVE a modem (Apple Vsn 0007-1,9/2/1998 v.90) That modem simply can't seem to detect the dial tone.
I have also confirmed my modem settings, tried checking and unchecking the 'sound' and 'wait for dial tone' boxes. My internet provider is NetZero, so I have attempted to dial in using their software, as well as directly through Internet Connect. All attempts return the same message. (and the NetZero account is still active, I have accessed it from two separate computers).
Any thoughts out there if there are any further settings or or software/OS variations I should try? Or are my suspicions valid that the storm somehow fried the modem (there were no power interruptions during the storm... only modem troubles)
My next step might be to find an external modem. I've not seen any Mac-compatible 56k modems in stores. There is a Apple USB Modem in the Apple store, but it requires OS 10.4.3 and a computer 'without a built-in modem', so I don't think that will help me. I've also considered using Airport to share my roommate's DSL connection, but I believe that my model of iMac is not airport compatible...
I also have a dead iMac in the closet (DV model) with a blown ethernet port, broken fan, and damaged hard drive. I'm not above cannibalizing either machine to get the other working until I can afford a new G5...
Any thoughts, suggestions, or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated!!

The only thing I can think of is to go in to the modem settings and choose ignore dial-tone. That way even if it's not getting a good tone the iMac will continue to try to connect. This is also important if you have a voice mail system that varies the dialling tone whne you have a message as I know that stops my father's Win98 box connecting to the Internet unless the equivalent option is checked.
You can update your email address to a current one here. If the Apple ID (i.e. the one you login with) is old don't worry that's pretty irrelevant.

  • Satellite L20: Modem doesn't get dial tone

    Hi,
My L20 notebook doesn't get a dial tone whem I'm trying to dial up. On antoher pc the connection works well, so I'm sure that the line has a dial tone and that the other computer is 'listening'.
I also tried to uncheck the 'wait before dial tone' option, tried to remove it from the Device manager, but after this all the modem still doesn't work. The current driver that is installed is version 7.20.00.00, because I can't install the latest version (7.25.00.00) (setup doesn't finish well, no specific error is given).
Does anybody knows what to do??

Open the system control panel and choose the Phone and modem options.
There check the Modems tab. The modem should be placed in the list.
If not, so you need to install the modem driver.
Check the Modem function by pressing the "Query Modem" button.
If the Modem Information window contain a list of AT commands (including ATI2, ATI3, ATI4 etc.), then the modem is correctly installed. The ATI5 command ends in with the number for the selected Regional settings (for example Germany = 06).
To change the Regional Setting please use the Toshiba Internal Modem Region Select Utility.

  • When making a call NO DIAL TONE

when making a call NO DIAL TONE, and can't here the other person talking. Only
if pressing SPEAKER or when using the iPhone Stereo Headset.(SILENT BOTON IS OFF) please help!!

Hello LA1, first off since iphone is a Cellular Phone there is no dial tone, as far as no sound though the earpiece on your iphone, try pluging/unpluging the headset from the jack on top of the iphone a few times, that usually clears up that problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need configuration help on producing dial tone

    Hello Experts,
I have a Cisco 2921 router with VWIC3-2MFT-T1/E1 card. On this card we have T1-CAS digital line connected. We have been provided with a set of DID numbers. We have a requirement where, when we dial a DID, the router should provide a dial tone, and should allow the user to dial to extension numbers. Not sure if this is feasible. If at all possible, will need to some configuration help.
    Thanks
    Arabinda

Sure it's possible. What's the T1 connected to? The router will offer two-stage dialing (aka dial tone) when the incoming POTS dial-peer does not have the 'direct-inward-dial' command on it. The router will accept any input and search for an outbound dial-peer (or ephone-dn for locally registered DNs) to match. Be careful if the T1 is connected to the PSTN as this is a toll fraud risk. You need to use CoR to reign in what outbound dial-peers are available to it.

  • No dial tone/infinity still works

Monday afternoon we had a phone call on the line to let use know the Sky engineer was on his way to fit a new HD box, we then had a storm hit for around and hour.  At 5pm we went to make a call and our cordless phones (fitted to diy extension) had no dial tone.  We then went and put the phone base station in to the master socket that has the new infinity faceplate on it.  Plugged into the bottom slot and no dial tone  We then went out and purchased a £10 corded phone and plugged into the slot on the master socket, no dial tone and no power being supplied to the hand set to operate memory functions/lights etc etc  Strange thing is Infinity still works fine.
Called up to log an engineer visit and told that if the fault is found with my wiring it will cost £130 :/ am I right in thinking that everything coming into the house and terminating at the master socket is BT's responsibility ? and the fact that I have had 2 phones hard wired into the master socket as evident that it is the socket or cab thats at fault?
Just want to check this as every email/phone conversation/text message, keeps saying it will cost me £130 if no fault found or with my wiring.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I swirched from ANOTher provider to BT on 11 may.  The engineer was great and had all the correct details.  Later that day teh phone went off.
SInce then (now May 13) I have contact BT around 8 times.  They keep saying things like 'your account isn't active'. or 'the number isn't associated with the account' and even garuanteed the phone woudl be working by 12 May.
Evertyime I phone the help line or do live chat contact they find a reason not to be able to solve the problem.  BT continually finds a way to blame it on SKY - the other provider.
The difficulty for me is that BT told me there would NOT be a any problem when I placed the order.  They were happy enough to take my order, but unhappy enough NOT TO SOLVE the PROBLEM.
It seems to me that there is a competence issue here for BT.  Either thay gave me false information whan they sold me the product, or they simply lack the competence to take responsibility for a problem they told me woudl not occur.
I am now the one who has to slove the problem BT garuanteed me would not be a problem.  If they had told me it was a problem at the beginning I could have done somethign about it.
I think other people have had similar experiences and this is clearly a case of sharp pratice and unfair competition on the part of ANOTHER provider, but on the other hand BT shoudl be resolving this problem
