Brute-Force Crash Recovery Options?

Given the amount of crashes FCPX users are experiencing, I'm thinking of using an synchronization/archiving utility such as ChronoSync to monitor certain files/folders and archive them on a specific time interval (e.g. 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 5 minutes) to maintain some sort of file coherency between these critical files. It appears that the most critical would be the:
    •    *.fcpproject files
    •    *.fcpevent files
    •    User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.FinalCut.plist
    •    User > Library > Preferences > com.apple.FinalCut.LSShardFileList.plist
I suppose a script of my own making could do something similar. Are there any other files that would be useful and quick to grab in a snapshot? Are there any other file coherency issues to be aware of?
I already have my transcoded event footage backed up and I'm assuming any Render files could be regenerated if needed.
Is this wishful thinking?
There is a tool called "FCP Versioner" by DigitalRebellion, but it's not listed as supporting FCPX quite yet. Many of their other FCP utilities do support FCPX already.
Thoughts?

To back up the event and project files is very handy, now I am left alone in the hands of the software his programed will.
two times allready I experienced that my files were corrupted because of a crash. I have been lucky so far.
I would like the script or program to back up the files I am working on. so not all my project files but only the active ones or only the files that I choose to back up.
also I use event manager x, so maybe this can be the inspiration?

  • Server Crash - Recovery Options

Our Leopard Server has crashed whilst implementing the latest automatic software update. When I boot from DVD or another drive, it mounts the old 10.5.2 server partition, but locked as read-only. I have tried repairing with Disk Utility to no avail and have even tried using DiskWarrior 4.1 which won't function on locked disks, so I'm kind of stuck as to what my best recover options are. Unfortunately we hadn't got as far as setting up Time Machine as we didn't have enough available drive space to use as a back-up volume (need to buy new drive for that purpose).
In the meantime I am starting to do a new server build on another drive, but that still leave me the problem of transferring over any user and configuration information. (Fortunately all the user data files, etc. were on separate drives and were unaffected by the crash).
Any suggestions as to how to proceed?

No, it is the entire drive partition that has been locked and when you boot off any other drive you get the following message appears on the desktop:
    "Disk Repair
The disk 'Leopard Server' was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible."
The problem is that I have so far been unable to find any utility that will allow me to do anything with this partition other than navigate the folders on it because it is locked at the drive level. Hence I cannot even investigate the problem nor recover, repair, copy, backup, etc. any file on that drive because it keeps telling me that it is locked.
The problem is that Leopard Server does not have an effective mechanism to back-up & restore its own configuration information and settings, user groups, directory structures, links to other drives, etc. Unless I can get a copy of the relevant configuration files off this partition, I cannot reproduce this server as it was, but will have to manually rebuild it from scratch again (this is the second time this has happened) with no hope of being able to reproduce the same configuration as there are too many variables involved.

  • Mac crash; recovery will not start

Yesterday my Mac suddenly crashed into a screen with blue (and white) lines. It wouldn't respond to anything, so I powered it down and tried to boot again. However, it will not boot. It will show the Apple logo, request my password and after a while (with the Apple logo and the spinning wheel) it just shows a blank screen (grey), while the CPU fans are spinning like crazy.Sometimes will it not even get this far and stop doing anything before requesting the password. The guest mode has the same problem.
I basically tried everything to fix it; the recovery option will also show the blank grey screen but nothing else (even after 30 minutes); the internet recovery downloads fine and then pulls the same stunt, so even the recovery will not work. I've tried save mode, which cannot start up (Filevault is activated) and seems to end mid-way through. Sometimes the safe mode crashes immediately after the boot starts with a kernel panic (/sbin/launchd failed, errno 2); after resetting the NVRAM it won't panic.
I've checked the hardware (T startup option, full check), which al seems to be OK. SMART status from the harddrive looks OK (checked with DiskWarrior). Starting in single user mode sometimes gets me through the password request screen and allows me to check the hard drive (fsck -fy). This seems to change permissions, however, after a reboot or exit command, the problem persists and starting up in single user mode and performing the fsck -fy command again seems to fix some issues. When I enter the exit command in safe mode, it'll start up fine, but when the graphic user interface starts, it'll give me the grey screen again (so a blank screen, while the CPU fans are at full power).
Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this? Since even the recovery will not start (and neither will the internet recovery), I've got no clue what to do to fix this issue...

Your comment about the "blue and white lines" has me wondering.  You say you have a fairly recent MacBook Pro, correct?  If that is the case, you probably have a model which has both discrete and integrated GPUs.  It is possible that your discrete GPU has failed, and whenever the OS is trying to switch to it is when your system just "hangs" (because the GPU has failed).  It all works properly as long as it is on the integrated GPU, but when something causes it to switch it hits the bad GPU and locks.
I would suggest that you make an appointment at your nearest Apple Store to have the specialists at the Genius Bar take a look at it for you.  If you are still under the 1 year warranty (or extended Apple Care if you purchased it) then any needed hardware repairs would be free, unless it is due to accidental damage such as a spill in the keyboard, etc.
If you don't have access to an Authorized Apple Service Center, and you do have access to another Mac, you could try making an external boot drive on the other Mac, then install the app "gfxCardStatus" on that MacOS instance (when booted from the external drive).  While still booted from the external drive, use the gfxCardStatus app to force the Mac to only use the integrated GPU then shutdown and boot your "dead" Mac from that drive.   If it boots and runs, now, try to change the external drive to force to use only the discrete GPU then see how your system boots.  If your system, will fully boot using one or the other, then it seems that your problem is probably related to one of your GPUs.  It could be a hardware failure, or it could be a corrupted driver.  If your system won't boot from either GPU, then my guess about it being a GPU issue is probably wrong.

  • What the heck is brute-forcing our exchange server?

    Hello all,
We have been getting FLOOODED with (what seems like) brute force attacks on our server. We use RDP a lot for remote connecting but our firewall (Sonicwall) is setup to block IPs that aren't ours (I've seen this resolve RDP brute-force attacks first-hand).
The problem is that i'm used to seeing the "Failure Audit" logs with "Logon Type 10" and an IP that was attempting the connection, but now we're being flooded with "Logon Type 8". The issue that has me concerned is that i'm now
seeing a LARGE amount (438 entries) of failed login attempts with no IP address to indicate where it's coming from.
Now, as much as I love Batman, I know for a fact noone on our end was trying to login under this account (or the hundreds of other accounts that attempted logins). I copied one of the event viewer logs below and literally ALL of the events are identical
with the exception of the Account Name (the acct name is different and always something blatantly fake).
My guess is that there is some type of bot trying to authenticate using OWA to get email access, however I could be 100% wrong (the logic comes from the fact that an exchange file is listed on every event). ANNNNY input / advice on this matter is appreciated!!!

The Logon Type field indicates the kind of logon that was requested. The most common types are 2 (interactive) and 3 (network).
The Process Information fields indicate which account and process on the system requested the logon.
The Network Information fields indicate where a remote logon request originated. Workstation name is not always available and may be left blank in some cases.
The authentication information fields provide detailed information about this specific logon request.
    - Transited services indicate which intermediate services have participated in this logon request.
    - Package name indicates which sub-protocol was used among the NTLM protocols.
    - Key length indicates the length of the generated session key. This will be 0 if no session key was requested.

    Hi,
logontype 8 is the same as logontype 3 -network logon except for the fact the password is sent in clear text.
I think your OWA is publicly available and someoen is trying to access it. The fact the logontype is 8 indicates you might use basic authentication on the website- which is quite insecure. it migh lso be some other servcies (like smb) are available from
    the internet and abused.
make sure the server is only reachable on the web on the needed ports 443 for the website, 25 for smtp. You firewall should block all the rest!
For rdp (and other management tools) I would recommend blocking access over the internet and configuring some vpn solution.
    MCP/MCSA/MCTS/MCITP
Thank you! This goes along with what we were thinking so it's very nice to see someone else saying it. We are looking more into the firewall rules and most likely getting an updated firewall altogether. With any luck we will be ok after setting up the new
wall with all fresh Rules while keeping the threat in mind. Lots of rules currently and limited security options since it's ancient.
    Thanks for the response!

  • Recovery options for U460 notebook?

I recently got myself a U460 notebook.  I didn't even notice it was missing an optical drive - my fault, I missed it in the display unit.
Anyway, in the event of a HDD crash 2-3 years down the road, what kind of recovery options do I have?  Can I:
Boot from a USB connected external CD drive?
Perform One Key recovery even with a new HDD?
    Others?
I hope NOT to bring it back to the SC....

  • Vista crash recovery

Hi. I'm trying to help a friend but I'm not terribly experienced with laptops. She has a Toshiba Satelite L300 but when she got it and turned it on the first time she skipped the step for making the recovery discs. Now her computer has completely crashed, gets to the repair-or-boot-to-Windows screen and neither choice goes anywhere useful. I tried to boot to the last-known-successful, but that didn't work either. I found the Recovery Disc Creator for Windows Vista but I can't work out how to use it or if it's even useful on a computer this out of whack. I downloaded it, burned it onto a cd and booted her computer with it, making sure it could boot from a cd, but that didn't seem to work. I actually ran it on my own computer because I thought maybe I needed to create an image before burning it to a cd, the name did seem to suggest that, but if it created an image I don't know where it went.
I'm on the wrong track aren't I? Is there clear instructions anywhere for how to use that file? I've been trying to work this out all weekend.
    Thanks in advance

  • Problem with using Recovery Option.

I have a HP Pavilion dv9925nr Notebook PC and would like to use the Recovery option to bring the computer back to its initial condition, however I believe that I inadvertantly deleted things that I need in order to do this. When I press F11 at startup, nothing happens.  I previously made Recovery Discs, however the installed DVD-CD Drive is not working.  I do have an external DVD-CD Drive that is working, however I do not know how to run the Recovery Discs from this external DVD-CD drive.  Can you help me?

Thank you so much for your help.  I tried your suggestion, however it did not work.  In System Configuration I found that the System Boot Order is 1) Notebook Hard Drive, 2) USB Floppy, 3) ATAPA CD/DVD Rom, 4) USB Diskette on Key, 5) USB Hard Drive, and lastly 6) Network Adapter.  When I press F9 on Startup to Change Boot Order I only have 2 options - Notebook Hard Drive or Network Adapter.  When I go to Windows Boot Manager it says that "Boot seleccion failed because a required device is inaccessible."  Is there any way that I can force the computer to boot from a new external DV
D/CD drive?  I went out and got one since the internal DVD/CD Drive was not working.  I would like to run the Recovery Discs from the new external DVD/CD drive if possible.

  • Data Recovery Options?

In the process of transferring from a POP3 Account to IMAP, I deleted a POP3 Account and lost a lot of email's I still need. I've seen some data recovery options such as File Salvage, but I'm wondering if there are any cheaper options out there? Thanks for the help.

What an awful thing to have happen! Especially on such a special and happy day! You have my deepest sympathy.
From what I understand, as long as the data has not been overwritten, you should be able to recover it. I will have to let the explanation of how to do this rest with people more knowledgeable than I am, as I have never had occasion to have to do this. But I have no doubt that they will post the appropriate resources.
I have been told that the only way to destroy a hard drive so that you can't recover the information is with a hammer. That said, it could still be costly. But unless your new backup partially wrote over some of your previous backup, it should be recoverable.
Good luck, and have a happy honeymoon--don't let this spoil it! And the best of everything for your future!

  • I can't accessed system recovery options after the repairing process was interrupted.

although it's not my PC, i'm still concern about it (it's actually a public computer in our library). I actually tried to repair it using the system recovery options of windows 7 with thinkvantage technoliogies  but i interrupt it because maybe someone will caught me and i will be mistakenly be liable. and the result is after i restared it, it restarts over and over again, with BSOD appearing for a split second. i tried to use disable autorestart on system failure feature, and i saw the BSOD. but the real issue is i can't go through the recovery options, only until the part when i'm asked to select a keyboard input method, then the next part is this message: "You must log in to access System Recovery Options. If you are having trouble logging in, please contact your computer administrator for assistance. Click OK to restart the computer." anyway, this is the BSOD says:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus disk defragmentation  or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

  • Netbeans 6.1 SMS NON-Brute force ability listen to multiple ports

First of all, my appologies for being a nubie coming from Mobile6. The company I slave at is migrating from MS Mobile to j2me!!! I am porting a code segment that listens to all incoming/outgoing SMS text messages and logs the messages into another java contact applet for our sales department. Our company policy(I cannot change) allows the sales department to use any/multiple SMS packages and install onto the device.
Based on my understanding of the (MessageConnection)Connector.open("sms://" foo); I must include a port address to listen in on. Is there a NON-brute forced methodogy to poll "active" ports the device is using to send/recieve SMS text message?

    db,
I was reading a blog by Bill Day [http://weblogs.java.net/blog/billday/archive/2004/02/midp_push_using.html]
regarding MIDP Push; A paragraph jumped at me, it was "...
Whichever network(s) you're application will be using, you need to find out what protocols they allow inbound to handsets. At the least, most GSM carriers will allow SMS (since they use SMS for short text messaging). Assuming your network does support SMS, from the server part of your application you would need to generate an SMS message directed to the port you bound your MIDlet to in its static or dynamic push registry settings. Assuming the network passes the SMS as expected, your MIDlet should be awakened when the SMS arrives in the handset..."
Either I'm not understanding your reponse, the info in this blog is incorrect or I must include a port address as part of the open method of the Connector. Still confused.

I want to factory reset my macbook pro but my computer doesn't give me the recovery option, it gives me Macintosh HD only.

    Hello sallay Amir,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you would like to erase your MacBook Pro and install a new copy of OS X, but the Mac does not boot to OS X Recovery when you hold the Command + R keys during startup.
If your Mac came with OS X Snow Leopard (10.6) or earlier, I recommend referring to the steps in this article:
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard: How to Erase and Install - Apple Support
For a newer Mac (OS X Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite), try reinstalling OS X by using Internet Recovery, as described in the "OS X Internet Recovery" section on this page:
OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
    All the best,

  • Will Windows 7 damage rescue & recovery option?

I have installed Windows 7 on my X300 which is running XP. I can boot into XP or Windows 7 but pressing the ThinkVantage button just gives me the option to choose boot device (as F12), BIOS config or normal boot - no recovery option.
As it is a second hand system, I don't know if it worked before I installed Win 7 but I now recall that I had a similar problem on a Lenovo that I installed Linux on. It seems quite possible that installing a new OS with its boot manager could affect the R&R partition.
Have others had the same problem?

I do not think it can be done.
If anyone knows how, they might get a ton of kudos!
A good method is to get a external HD, and use Win 7's built in
disk imaging software to back up to external.
You could use a partition on the internal HD, but that is not as disaster proof.
If you have NO intention of getting Vista back in the future, you can
re-partition the HD when installing Win 7.
If you want to have that option, create recovery disks in Vista, and then
install Win 7 in the same C:\ partition as Vista. Don't resize partition!
Rescue button will not work, but you will be able to recover Vista from recovery disks.

UPDATE: Brother got AA on his Barclays Apple card today. They called him and said that even though he pays statement in full and on time, over 100 inquiries is simply too much and closed his account. On another note, he raised his Lowes to 12k and Exon&Chevron to 4k each today. If anyone doesn't remember my last post about my brothers "spree", here it is: http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Brothers-crazy-credit-journey-PART-II/td-p/3815607 I no longer consider his journey to be a spree, it's more like brute force. He applies for about 20+ cards daily (including any prime cards, etc) and gets what he gets. He's very adamant about it and probably hasn't gone more than 3 days without applying for a few cards for the past 8 months or so. Today he messaged me that he got in with a Chase British Airways VS $3500 limit & 15.99%APR and some type of a Discover card. He probably has over 100 inquiries (last 6 months) on each bureau and 60-70+ new accounts reporting in the last 6 months. His next goal is to get in with AMEX & Citi and his overall goal is to reach the $1,000,000 available credit mark, he is currently at around $200k-$250k. I'm surprised myself, apparently applying once a day for every credit card ever works, haha.
