Cannot even START HotSync with Vista

Hello, I hope somebody can help me here...
I've bought a Palm Pre Plus a few days ago and since tried to synchronise it with my laptop.
I installed the newest Palm Desktop software and connected the phone via USB.
After installing everything I get a window asking me to connect the phone and press a "HotSync button" of some sort... but there is no press-able button on either the phone or the cable that works.
When I connect the phone it asks whether I want to just charge the phone or use the USB connection. If I choose the latter I can drag-n-drop stuff onto the phone (wallpapers & ringtones) but that's it.
Does anybody know what I should do? I have no idea what I did wrong or forgot to do...
Thank you very much!!

With the Palm Pre, it does not "hotsync" like the previous Palm devices did. There is no native desktop sync. option.
With the PRE, you sync your data to an on-line service like the Palm profile, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, etc. With the Palm Profile, you only have access to the data on the device. There is no option to view the profile data on a PC.
There is a tool that Palm offers that will transfer your current data that is in Outlook or Palm desktop to the PRE and an on-line service. The tool is the Data Transfer Assistant. Go to Palm.com/dta to get the tool.
If you want to sync to Palm desktop or Outlook on your PC, you will need to use a 3rd party solution like Companion Link or the Chapura products Pocket Mirror for Outlook or Echo for Palm Desktop.

I have a similar problem with CD's created with Vista, but if the preferences are set correctly in Vista, compatible CD's and DVD's can be created.

Understanding the difference between the Live File System and Mastered disc formats
If you have burned CDs using Windows XP, you are already familiar with the Mastered format. The latest version of Windows offers a new format, called Live File System. Discs that use the Live File System format are often more convenient because you can copy selected files immediately and as often as you want, as if the disc were a floppy disc or USB flash drive. On the other hand, Live File System discs can’t be used in all computers and devices. Use this guide to understand the difference between Live File System and Mastered discs:
Discs formatted with the Live File System option:
    • Work like a USB flash drive or floppy disk, meaning you can copy files to disc immediately without having to burn them.
    • Are convenient if you want to keep a disc in the burn drive and copy files whenever the need arises.
    • Are only compatible with Windows XP and later versions of Windows.
Discs formatted with the Mastered option:
    • Don’t copy files immediately, meaning you need to select the entire collection of files that you want to copy to the disc, and then burn them all at once.
    • Are convenient if you want to burn a large collection of files, such as a music CD.
    • Are compatible with older computers and devices such as CD players and DVD players
Why are there different versions of the Live File System format?
Each version of the Live File System format is compatible with different operating systems. Depending on which computers you plan to use a disc in, you might need to select a different version of Live File System. If you plan to use your disc on the latest version of Windows, however, you will never need to change the version of Live File System you use. If you need to make discs that are compatible with earlier versions of Windows, use the table below to select the right Live File System version for your needs:
The following table describes Live File System versions and their appropriate uses.

Have you tried pressing the tiny "Reset" button on the back of the device?
This will do a simple reboot.

  • T3 Bluetooth Hotsync with Vista

    Oh somebody please help me!!
I have a T3 and I'm running Vista.  After searching through the messages and trying different upgrades/downloads...I finally succeeded in upgrading to Palm Desktop 6.2 and configuring the T3 to HotSync via bluetooth.  Yay...it was finally syncing!!
BUT as it was syncing, it got to Calendar/DateBook and locked up.  It said that it completed "4 out of 16" and hung there.  I had to go into Task Manager on the computer to officially stop the HotSync progress and get it off the screen.  I checked and the Calendar version on the Palm is v1, the Datebook is v4.5.1.1P and the OS is v5.
    What can I do??
    Thanks,

  • TX hotsync with Vista, Hot Sync 7.0 hangs when updating date book

Hotsync of my Palm TX, with hotsync 7.0, Windows Vista is failing. Hangs on date book, step 2 of 13. Have to kill task with task manager to recover.
Worked a few times after initial install.
Log says did not transfer all data items to desktop. Suggests increasing the limit??
Don't see a way to increase the limit on data items.
    Any suggestions?

Go over to www.pimlicosoftware.com and get dbfixit, run it and see if it finds any corruption. If it does you can either manually fix them for free or purchase the program and have it fix it for you. Then try to sync again.

I have new Dell Inspiron; successfully installed Palm TX software and performed first HotSync.  One month later I'm receiving error message after attempting the HotSynch "The connection between your device and the desktop could not be established.  Please check your setup and try again."  I have  checked set and downloaded "Palm Desktop 6.2 for Windows" and still can't perform HotSync.  I've tried all four USB ports on laptop; done soft reset; restarted laptop, all to no avail.  HELP!!!  I'm just about ready to go back to paper planner!!!

    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

When you connect your device to your computer do not perform a hotsync. Instead open your device manager, you should be able to locate that in your Control Panel.
Once inside your device manager locate your Palm device. It should be located under Universal Serial Bus Controllers or Network Adaptors. Once you find it right click it and go to "Uninstall." As soon as you click uninstall unplug the device from the computer.
Plug it back in and it should come up with Found new hardware and hopefully you will be able to sync fine after that.
Let me know if that works out for you.

  • Cannot get QuickTime working with Vista due to Export Controller.

I have downloaded the latest version of ITunes and Quick Time. ITunes works fine, but when I click on the QuickTime icon I get the Windows message "Export Controller not Working." Yesterday QuickTime would load after about 30 seconds, but now it does not load at all. Today I have uninstalled QuickTime and re-installed it. However, I am still getting the message "Export Controller not working." QuickTime appears in the task bar, but when I try clicking on it it will not open. I do not want to uninstall ITunes because it is working okay, and my family have a lot of music downloaded on it. I am not at all technical, and I would appreciate any help that anyone can give to resolve this problem with QuickTime. I note that there is a previous question on this topic that remains unanswered.

There is obviously still a problem somewhere as I am still getting the Export Controller message, but I am very appreciative for your help. What is Export Controller, and do you have any idea why it is not working properly?
What i presume the Export Controller is ... is part of the machinery that allows QuickTime Pro to export movies to other formats. Although you only get that functionality in QuickTime Pro, it's built in to the QuickTime player (basically, to get QuickTime Pro, you buy a "QuickTime Pro Key" which unlocks all the movie editing capabilities of the Player.)
As to what is causing it ... well I've come across a possible lead off in another thread.
Over here, DevilQc is getting an Export Controller error, but he's also getting a message about his CoreFoundation.dll:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10304475&#10304475
CoreFoundation.dll is part of Apple Application Support (which is a seperate program from QuickTime, but is required for the latest versions of QuickTime to run). If Apple Application Support is missing or damaged, usually QuickTime (and iTunes) won't start *at all.* But it's possible that if you've got some sort of subtle damage to your Apple Application Support, QuickTime might run with an error message.
So I'm thinking that the next thing we should try is swapping out your Apple Application Support. Unfortunately, the easiest way to do that is by uninstalling Apple Application Support and QuickTime and then reinstalling QuickTime, so we'll have to go through that rigmarole again.
Follow the instructions I posted last time for the QuickTime uninstall/reinstall (no need to download a fresh copy of the QuickTime installer though ... the one you downloaded last time should do the trick), with the following additions:
*When you are in the "Uninstall a Program" Control panel:* Also uninstall Apple Application Support.
*When you are in the \Program files\ directory clearing away any leftover program files or folders:* Open the "Common Files" folder. Right-click the "Apple" folder and select Delete and choose Yes when asked to confirm the deletion. (Note: This folder may have already been deleted if Apple Application Support was successfully removed using Uninstall a Program earlier.)
The QuickTime reinstall should then also reinstall Apple Application Support. With a fresh copy of Apple Application Support in place, do you still get the Export Controller error message?

  • PC60G WLAN card, cannot use MSI utility with Vista

I think I accidentally installed Windows Vista's own drivers, and now the MSI Configuration Utility cannot find the wireless access point.
    Steps to repeat:
Launch the utility from the notification area
    Select the Site Survey tab
After a few seconds the status shows "Disconnected"
After a few more seconds the Rescan button is enabled
No network device is in the table
I have done System Restore to the point before I installed anyting. The Windows wizard detected new hardware again (I cancelled it).
I have installed the latest MSI drivers for Vista 32 bit, 2.0.3.0.
Still the MSI utility cannot connect.
Win XP has a check box to disable Windows from managing the wireless connection, but I have been unable to find this function in Vista. Does anybody know where it is?
I am able to connect to the access point using Vista's built-in support.
Is it worth the trouble to try to disable Windows' management? Are there features in the MSI utility that I am missing out on? If not, can I uninstall the MSI utility (to get rid of the notification icon) without compromising the network card?

Well i'm using the same card under vista .. and the MSI utility isnt working for me either... but my advice .. vista's utility is better .. no need to use msi's one ... and if you want to disable it .. as i know .. in the installing CD .. when you install the driver you have 2 options to choose.... Performance .. or WiFi (as i remember) choose performance.

    Hi
I am working on PDK 5.0 for which I have installed JDK 1.3.1_15. and Tomcat 3.3. I've also installed Eclipse 2.0 on the system. Tomcat and PDK 5.0 are working while I cannot even start the eclipse IDE. An error is thrown saying the JVM is terminated. The log file shows an error saying that there is an access exception in the user32.dll file in Windows. I am using Windows XP. What could possibly be wrong?

    Hi Aviad,
I am working on migration from EP 5.0 to EP 6.0. I could finally solve the problem. I guess it had to do with the compatibility of Eclipse 2.0 with JDK 1.3.1. I tried with Eclipse 2.1 instead and its working fine.

  • How do I force-eject a CD when I cannot even get to the start-up screen?

Friends, Let me first apologize for getting myself into this mess, in the first place.
I bought a second-hand iBook G4 in the U.S., for a friend of mine, and brought it to South America, where I am living for one year, but far from any Mac Repair Center. I am getting the computer ready, to give to my friend, as a gift.
The computer was working perfectly here for the few weeks that I have had it. It has OS 10.3.9 installed, but no OS9. I wanted to install OS9, so that I could give my friend some older software to use with it.
(In fact, I inserted the software CDROM that I was going to give to my friend, into the second computer, to install the program before giving him the disk also. This was an important mistake.)
Moreover, the OS9 disk that came with this second "new" computer does not appear to be the same one that shipped with the computer originally. Consequently, when I tried to install OS9 Classic, it would not install correctly from this disk (although it was indeed made for installing OS9 to another iBookG4, but not this one, apparently.)
Consequently, as a short-cut, I simply copied my own Classic "system folder" from my own (completely) identical iBookG4, transferred it to a pen drive, and was going to move it to the second computer. Not all of the files copied successfully, however (some printer descriptions, for example), but most of them did.
So, I transferred what I could, in the meantime, and now I had a new Classic "system folder" on the second computer.
When starting up the Mac Classic environment there, however, the Classic environment would crash, and in that case I would just close the Classic environment altogether and continue normally in OSX mode, trying to solve the problem. I realized that my "copy" was not good enough.
Then I got the idea to make an "archive" of the original classic folder on my own computer, and then transfer the archive, to see if it would make a more perfect copy this way. It archived perfectly indeed, and at half the size, so I assumed that I would now have all the necessary documents, once it was transferred and decompressed onto the second computer.
Meanwhile, I decided to erase the incomplete corrupt copy of the (classic) system folder on the second computer, to avoid confusion when the new copy was transferred. As I moved it to the trash, the computer told me that it was being used by the system, and that it therefore could not be deleted. Since the classic environment was not running, I assumed that this was some sort of error, meant to protect the folder from accidental deletion regardless of the circumstances. Consequently I re-named the folder, and then deleted it successfully, and received no error message.
I went back to the first computer, to copy the new, archived classic folder to my pen drive. When I did, and returned to the second computer, I noticed that the screen was black there, but the disk, still spinning.
I checked to see if it was the display, or the connection, or if the computer was sleeping, or the screen saver activated, but none was the case.
I re-booted, but there was no start-up chime. The disk spun normally (or perhaps more loudly than normal).
I re-booted, holding down P and R, but no results. The display was completely black (i.e., no ilumination whatsoever, not merely a dark screen, but rather black).
I concluded that the source of the problem was what I had done with the classic folder (renaming it or deleting it).
I got the idea of inserting the system disk, to reboot from the CDROM, but the problem was that there was already a software disk inside, and it would not eject when the eject button was pushed.
I found some suggestions online. I rebooted holding down the track-pad button, for example. No results.
I rebooted holding down CMD OPT SHIFT O F, (or whatever the combinations were that were suggested). No results. I cannot even get a terminal screen to appear, much less a gray screen.
If I close the lid while the computer is running, the computer will NOT go into sleep mode. (So much for the suggestion about forcing an eject from sleep mode).
I noticed a comment online that there might be a force-eject hole inside the felt, but I do not know how to move the felt back well enough to see, nor do I know where to look, or whether there is even such a hole on this model. (if you know of a diagram or photograph online, please direct me)
(Incidentally, if it is any help regarding the model, it is of serial no. UV445CLX_ _ _ , assembled in Taiwan)
How can I force eject the CDROM inside?
Is the solution to reboot from the system software disk, once I succeed in ejecting the CDROM?

You cannot boot an iBook from an external USB drive--only a firewire drive. Actually, the drive is just a drive--it is the enclosure that determines USB vs. FireWire. If you could find an appropriate firewire enclosure, you could remove the drive from the USB enclosure and place it in a firewire enclosure and then be able to boot from that. Or you could just purchase an external firewire drive if those are available where you are.
FireWire external drives are quite useful. One option would be to mount the external drive on the good iBook, format it properly for OS X with Disk Utility, and then use a program like Super Duper to make an exact clone of your internal hard drive. This is a popular way of backing up your stuff. You can boot from either the internal or the external. This means that if your internal hard drive were to die, you would have all your stuff on the external, and could run off of that. Since you are already using the USB for backup, it would probably be best to acquire a new firewire drive for troubleshooting and testing if you decide to go this route, since you really don't want to lose your existing backup.
If you did have a bootable clone, you could see if the sick iBook would boot from it or not. However, it may be more productive to pursue your other thread about the boot problem. I see that Richard has joined the thread as I had hoped he would. He actually works on iBooks and is very knowledgeable.
Also, if you do get the second ibook working and want to install OS9, you might want to post a question in the "Mac OS X v 10.3 Panther and earlier" forum. I'm not up on this myself, but I believe there is something about installing OS 9 drivers while formating or something like that. I believe the smart guys on that forum could give you some guidance so that you can avoid the problems you encountered earlier.
    Good luck!
