Cannot Open Attachments Outlook 2010

Hi,
I have a user that when she opens an Attachment she gets the error:
"the file is corrupt and cannot be opened"
When it is saved to the desktop it opens fine. When she logs into another PC it also has the problem, so it looks like a user based setting.
I've personally tried to open the same attachment and it opens fine on my PC (also using Office 2010). No other users (about 100 at this stage) have the problem.
I remember seeing this issue in Outlook 2003 where there was an option to turn down the security and then Outlook would open files without any issues.
Lastly, I know I can turn off protected view but I would rather not. It is a good feature and if more PCs break I don't want to be turning this off.

Hi,
From your description , I understand that the file is corrupt and cannot be opened but can be opened elsewhere.
Try the following steps:
1. Open Outlook 2010.
2. Click on File > Options.
3. Select Trust Center > Trust center settings.
4. Select Protected view.
5. Uncheck all the options under Protected View > OK.
6. Restart Outlook 2010 and try to open Outlook.
7. Once you have been able to open the Outlook, save it with Office new format.
8. Go to File > Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center settings -> Protected View
9. Check all the options again under Protected View -> OK
10. Restart Outlook 2010.
Sincerely,
Harry

  • In cannot open MS Outlook 2010 email hyperlinks to a Firefox window. Am I missing something?

Whenever I try to click on a hyperlink within a 2010 Outlook email I get this error: General failure. The URL was: "######". An error occurred in sending the command to the application.
Not much to go on I know, but I'm reading that my default web browser HAS to be IE. I don't like anyone telling me I have to use something when I really don't want to. I've been using Firefox for many many years and I want to continue. BTY, my OS is Windows 7.

The major cause of this problem is a corrupted Navigation Pane settings file – profilename.xml, where “profilename” is the name of your Outlook profile. A good sign that the
file is corrupted is when the size of the file is shown 0 KB. No one knows the precise reason why this takes place, but all versions of Outlook from 2003 to 2013 may get affected.
Other causes may be when you run Outlook in the compatibility mode, or if you are using a profile generated in an older Outlook version, or if the Outlook data file (.pst or .ost)
was removed or damaged as the result of faulty uninstallation or reinstallation of MS Outlook.
Follow the steps given below to resolve this problem
    1. Recover Navigation Pane configuration file
    2. Repair your Outlook PST file using Inbox Repair tool
    3. Create a new Outlook profil and import data from the old PST file
    4. Turn off Compatibility Mode
    5. Start Outlook in Safe Mode

  • Outlook 2010 : Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window.

    Hi
Using Outlook 2010 with an Exchange 2003 back-end.
Already have an Outlook profile (created in Outlook 2003).
When launching Outlook 2010 I get:
"Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window"
I've read several posts with this error message and a common "workaround" / "solution" was to run:  “Outlook.exe /resetnavpane”
I tried that and it didnt resolve the issue.
The only way I found to resolve this was to create a new Outlook profile.
Launching with a new Outlook profile works fine.
    - Is this a "known issue" ?
    - Is there a way to diagnose / throubleshoot further without having to create a new profile?
    Thanks
    - AL

    Hi,
Thank you for using Outlook IT Pro Discussions forum.
This problem can occur when file that maintains the Navigation Pane settings becomes corrupted. This file is called profilename.xml, where profilename is the name
of your Outlook profile. Normally, we can resolve this issue by starting Outlook with the command
    Outlook.exe /resetnavpane
    or
    creating a new Outlook profile.
Next time, you may also try to rename the profilename.xml from the folder first to see if the issue can be resolved:
    Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
    Windows Vista, Windows 7: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Outlook

OK. This is a new outlook setup on a laptop. The mail account is on a MS Exchange Server 2010. The user can log on to their laptop no problem with their AD login and password. To setup the outlook profile we have checked the name OK. When we click finish
and try to start outlook we get the above error message. It is driving me pots as I have tried also of things. I have tried to connect without catching the files. The error message then says that the Exchange Server is down, yet we checked the name OK and
I can log on to the MS Exchange server and see the setup.
What else is it that I need to look at as I have tried everything. I will add that they one service I see not running is the Exchange RPC service. If I try to start it, it fails saying Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services
    or programs.
    What can I do?

  • Acrobat Connect Pro 7.5 will not open MS Outlook 2010

I have recently updated my OS to Windows 7. Acrobat Connect Pro 7.5 will not open MS Outlook 2010 with the preformatted email message after submitting via the Email Invitations button. MS Internet Explorer 8.0 goes to a blank page. Is there a compatibility issue with Acrobat Connect Pro 7.5, MS Outlook 2010, and/or Windows 7?

You were running a non-Intel version on an Intel Mac. You might not have run into problems before but it was only a matter of time. You cannot run an old version and then install brand new versions of ProKit and QuickTime - it will just break.
So you can either reinstall everything from scratch and then just keep it as it is without ever installing software updates, or you can upgrade to FCP 7. I recommend the latter.

When opening my Outlook 2010 with new added e-mail account with Exchange Server supplied by my employer, I have to click manually on my standard e-mail account for checking mail. Do I have to upgrade my Microsoft Office 2010 or how can I make my Outlook

    Hello Ketil,
    Good Day...
Seems to be the Issue is Syncing emails, now I would recommend you to Remove and Add the Account and try and check if the emails are getting synced automatically.
Hope this is with Single User. If it is with Multiple Users then we need to check the permissions assigned.

  • "Internal Error Occurred" appears when .pdf is opened from Outlook 2010 email

"Internal Error Occurred" appears when .pdf is opened from Outlook 2010 email
I am absolutely pulling out my hair over this one!!
    PC/Win 7 64bit/Adobe XI/Office 2010
I have tried Uninstalling and re-installing
I have tried using an adobe software removal tool
I have tried modifying the security settings in reader
I've tried running repair on MS Office
If you open the .pdf from an email directly, it opens Reader with the error "Internal Error Occurred"
If you drag and drop the .pdf onto the desktop, and then open it, it opens.
If you open Adobe Reader FIRST, then open the .pdf from the email, it opens fine.
ONLY when you open a .pdf from an email with Adobe Reader closed (so Outlook is asking AR to open first, and then present the .pdf) is it behaving this way.
Hypothesis: Outlook 2010 does not like to open Adobe Reader.
SO....tell me all of you brilliant geniuses? How do I solve this puzzle and become an end user's hero?
PS: WorkAround - the only work around I have found for this at present, is that the user first opens up Adobe Reader and lets it run in the background. I pinned the shortcut to his task bar to remind him.

I have uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Reader DC and installed Adobe Reader XI and everything works fine. This will be our current fix until a solution is found for the above error

  • Cannot open attachments with my firefox. my wife can with IE

with firefox I cannot open attachments in my emails. I have been forwarding these emails to my wife's email. She is using internet explorer by yahoo through AT&t and then I have no trouble opening them on her email.

hello jrhjmh, are you a yahoo mail user and does it work when you access yahoo mail through this link?: https://mail.yahoo.com/
    reference: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/971042
I'm not sure as to what exactly is going on, but it looks like yahoo has changed something on their side that makes certain old urls/servers dysfunctional (you may be currently using those because you've bookmarked them before or through your history) - at least quite a number of other users have reported that...
<br>so using the generic address https://mail.yahoo.com/ as a bookmark should lead you to the current & working url.

Can you download the attachment to local and open it? Does other types of attachment have this issue?
    Please check the following settings:
Go to File -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Attachment Handling -> Make sure "Turn off attachment Preview" is not selected -> Click "Attachment and Document Previewers" button -> Make sure "Microsoft

    Hi,
Basically you have tried a lot but the issue still exists, now one more suggestion I can provide is to make sure Outlook is not configured to run in Compatibility Mode:
Take Windows 7 for example, in Start -> Type "Outlook" in the search box -> Right click on the "Outlook 2013" shortcut -> Click Properties -> Under Compatibility tab -> Make sure "Run this program in compatibility
    mode for" is clear.
This method has resolved the issue for some users in this thread below:

  • Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window.

I get the following error message when opening Microsoft Outlook (using Windows 7):
Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. Errors have been detected in the file.
    C:/Users/owner/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook.pst.
Quit Outlook and all mail enabled applications and then use the Inbox repair tool (Scanpst.exe) to diagnose and repair errors in the file. For more information about the inbox repair tool, see Help.
I have tried the suggested fix of using the start menu, clicking "run" and then typing in "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane" and it did not work. Do I need some sort of a longer path to make this work?
I cannot find the so called "inbox repair tool" and don't know how to use "scanpst.exe".
Are all my old email folders now lost? How can I start using my Outlook email again?
    Thanks for any help. Susanne

It seems to me that your emails has not been lost, perhaps your outlook folder has been lost. to get your emails back you must try one of the following ways.
Use backup file, if you have kept it in another location.
if not then go to the:
    C:/Users/owner/AppData/Local/Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook.pst."
and run the scanpst, exe tool to fix the outlook error on windows 7.
If this application is not working or giving error then use a powerful PST Repair tool. which ,may become helpful for
    you.

Uninstalling Lync did not help so I'm not sure if that is the issue or not. I've tried reinstalling Outlook and Lync to no success.
