  • Power button and HDD cable - part 2

    Hi there,
7 days ago I posted below message:
    Hi there,
I made a big mistake by opening up my HP Pavilion 15-n255sb (this is a build sold here in Belgium) without exactly knowing how to go about this and so in the proccess I broke the HDD cable and ripped of the fine flat cable from the power button.
Yes I know, warranty went out of the window with this, stupid, stupid but I am sure I can salvage the machine and get it back to work as it is a very nice machine to work with......
So what I need is to know where to find these 2 cables, prefably here in Belgium or indeed in Europe, if all fails the rest of the world....
    Anyone that can help me?
I thank you very much and feel pretty stupid by messing up this machine , !!!!
Sparkles1 was able to help me by pointing me to the manual of this laptop and so I could find the correct part numbers.
So far all went well but as soon as I tried to order them I ran into a (brick)wall. HP themselves do not seem to be able or willing to supply them, their (prefered) partners are pretty useless too!! If I go to HP USA I can find both parts, put them in my shoppingcard but than ofcourse I get dropped back to HP Europe (Belgium to be precise) and ther it all goes cold....
Anyone any suggestions how to get these 2 fairly simple parts? This is getting very silly and I am getting angry....
Thanks for your time and help,
    Eugene

  • MacBook Pro stays in completely grey screen after HDD cable change.

    Hello everybody!
My HDD cable recently failed, so I ordered a used one from eBay.
It is the second time I have this problem.
When it came this morning, I went immediately back to test my new (used) cable.
I changed it and when I tried to boot, my Mac stayed in a completely grey screen with nothing on it.
At first, I thought that the cable was buggy, so I tried to boot from a USB hard drive, but it did not change anything.
I tried to enter the SL installation disk, but the drive did not even take the CD in it.
I also tried the following with no luck:
    - Reset the PRAM
    - Reset the SMC
    - Tried the Shift, D, Command - R, Option key combinations at start up
    - Multiple reboots
I am really desperate, my MBP is mid-2009 and I really need it right now.
Thanks in advance for reading my problem
    Best regards,
    Antonis

    ultraago,
You may have the problem that I, and scores of others, have had with the faulty GPU found in a number of 2011 models, as discussed here -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0.
Usually the problem begins with graphics glitches and then it's downhill from there. The AHT will not report any problems and neither will the tests that the Apple techs have available.
If you do have this problem, then having the GPU reballed is the least expensive, and longer lasting, 'fix.' Apple will want to replace your logic board - don't fall for that scheme (unless you're still under warranty). I had my logic board replaced because I have AppleCare until next year. But once my AppleCare runs out and the problems come back again, I'm going the reball route.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Where would i get 2nd hdd cable for hp dv7-series (long cable) that would ship to finland.

Where would i get 2nd hdd cable for dv7 series (long one) THAT would ship to Finland. (as the subject says eh')

    Hei:
It depends on where in the dv7 model series your PC falls.
There are 2 types of second HDD cables. The one Kamat pointed out for the dv7 6xxx series, and then there is this one at the link below for these dv7 series:
     http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=345&zenid=b451f3afd6d86cd...
So, you will need to know what dv7 you have.
I believe they ship worldwide. A forum member from Italy got his from here. That is how I know about this site, and all about the fact that there are 2 types of 2nd HDD cables for dv7's.
The only part number referenced for a 2nd HDD cable in the service manual is for the dv7-6xxx series.

  • Pavilion DV7-6030EW HDD Cable Secondary

    Hi guys!
I have a problem with finding part number of cable for secondary HDD to my Pavilion DV7-6030ew. I've been googling for a while with no clear results. I bought SSD drive to my NB but now I can't plug it with HDD simultaneously. That cable should by circa 10cm long to reach the secondary HDD brackett. Any ideas?

Yes the best place to get it is newmodeus.com. I have been buying hard drive caddies/cables from them for over ten (10) years and when I have suggested newmodeus here, if I hear back it from the Forum User they are all happy I made the referral:

  • Vapor Case aux cable?

SO I have one of the vapor cases (got it to work properly too so my signal doesn't suck!) And now I need to find a good AUX cable that will fit so I can listen to music in my car... any suggestions?

    Hi,
Did you ever find a solution to this problem using vapor 4 cases? I just got a car and would love to listen to my playlists in it. The case is nice but prohibitive on the cables. If I can't find a aux cable that fits I'm thinking about shaving a bit of plastic out of the tips on side side.
    Thanks

Any idea where I can find a cable that fits -- tech support wasnt much help on the phone.  But very polite.

    Hi:
I will try to be polite, but helpful as well.
Below is the link to the cable I believe you need.

  • Hi, My Macbook Air Rev A 80gb HDD isn't showing up in Disk Utilitiy (new hdd btw)

Hey guys.. im new and this is my first post
Recently my Macbook Air rev a 80gb original hdd was failing *S.M.A.R.T* so i knew its time for a new hdd soon anyways... then i managed to format it with disk utility one day then after that it completely stopped detecting in disk utilitiy. now got my new hdd which is exactly the same *confirmed* and well its not detecting with my macbook...
    Helllppppp meee please
(PS. dont just comment stating the obvious i.e. try a new hdd cable as they are not cheap for a trial and error case)
    Thanks...
Ps. i have a secondary Mac Pro to use in the meantime if this can help repair/cd boot?

Does the new drive appear in Disk Utility?  If so then you need to prep the drive before you can use it:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.
If the drive does not appear in Disk Utility then either the new drive is dead, you've installed the ribbon cable incorrectly, the new drive is physically installed improperly, or there is some other hardware issue.

  • RT- cannot setup HDD, or new ip

    Hi fellows,
I am trying to set a desktop PC as a RT, but I'm very disappointed with the results as I tested everything and got no advancement...
...would you please please help me out here?!
    These are PC spec,
motherboard: Asus P5Q SE PLUS (has IDE)
    Processor: Intel Core 2 duo, 3000Hz, E8400
PCI ethernet: Intel pro 1000GT (chipset 8254x)
HDD: either WD-40GB(20-pin and 40-pin cables tested) or WD-250GB(40-pin) (not both are connected simultaneously)
    RAM: tested  with 1GB or 2GB DDR2-800
Video card: some fancy card is there (does it affect anything?)
    BIOS options:
-floppy used with and without USB legacy enabled, for many diffrent cases
-USB is set as hard drive (otherwise it fails)
-tested when extra serial ports are disabled/enabled, audio card disabled/enabled, onboard PCIE lan disabled
-HDD's are not SATA, but anyways, SATA is set to campatible IDE
    -ACPI 2.0 support disabled
    -Plug 'n Play disabled
    -BIOS EHCI hand-off ???
-I couldn't find any other maybe-related option to change
     network setup:
some address is provided in my workgroup subnet... (ip=ip1)
     local setup:
didn't have a crossover cable to test...
USB recognizes primay ip address as (169.100.115.239(ip2) which is in a different subnet as local connection)
     floppy gives primary as 0.0.0.0(ip3)
    Tests:
    Labview versions 8.2,  8.5.1, 8.6.1
    finding IDE hard drive failed:
-formatted using numerous fdisk and format versions (win95, win98, xp, freefdisk, free bla bla, Ultimate boot CD)
-tried only-primary, primary with logic, fat 16, fat32, active/non-active drives
    -tested via USb and floppy v. 8.2 8.5.1 8.6.1
-floppy says can only reformat FAT16 and FAT32, please use USB...
-USb says : Error -1: No ATA/SATA drive detected, format failed (or IDE not found in evaluation)
evaluating through USB and floppy leads to the HDD problem only...
    using safemode:
    -usb: reaches to
     mac xx...: ip1 (primary)
      ...safemode ... (user directed)
    -floppy:
      mac xx...: 0.0.0.0 (primary)
      System state: Unconfigured
PC found through MAX using floppy disk (0.0.0.0) and a new ip is set...or USB is found as ip2 and then changed to admin-assigned ip...
...BUT when rebooted, we are at the first place, the new ip is not set
(in all cases HDD is not found)
...for usb case, MAX recognizes ip2 but as inconsistent ip, and it is not possible to install softwares (the PC name does not expand in remote systems)
PROBLEM1: HDD not found at all
PROBLEM2: New ip is not saved, and turns back to default after reboot
    Thanks
    Morteza

-Are the RT computer and PC on the same subnet?
Sure they are, I am quite sure I have no ethernet problem here.
-The harddrive needs to be formatted as FAT32.
It is, I also tested 16 anyways
You have mentioned several different computers.
-Have you been moving the same harddrive around between these computers? Maybe the harddrive configuration is wrong (i.e. the jumpers on the back of the IDE drive)
*it is set as master (it is single) ( since it is only the only ide in all computers, the configuration in this sense is the same)
*I used several other options too, like having one/two hards, master/single/slav.
-What tests have you been doing with these computers?
*one of these is ours (which doesn't work), two others are not ours anyways, so even if they work, it is not a working option. And the old dell is the only working one.
    * Basically, using  dell pc, everything worked very easily (just a bios configuration, and working. I formatted 20GB/40GB using floppy with dell. I used these two hards on our pc (which didn't recognize or format the HDDs) to set up the system using floppy/usb/MAX(router or internet connection); it still couldn't recognize the HDD(s) ... (there are 3 points implying the same) (1)the max says "0 bytes" space in HDD(s), (2) If a new ip is se and rebooted, the new ip is not recognized (not saved in HDD), (3) if using USB (which sets the ip automatically) I try to install software on HDD, it starts with error uploading, probably disk is full.
*I also installed RTOS on the 20GB HDD using dell, and did several tests on our pc, no progress...
-I know you made more progress with the old Dell. What exactly happened? What are you testing with these different computers?
*with dell everything is fine. Our PC seems to be imcompatible. I can't use the other PCs as they are not mine, just wanted to test with them, so I know where the problem is, or if I could format the HDDs somewhere and use them here (which didn't work)

  • 3 times of replacement of Hard drive Cable within 2 years

    Dear All,
I have been an iFan and loved Apple's products. I have been an owner of 4 iPods, 1 iPhone, 1 iPad and 1 Macbook Pro 13'' (bought at Jan 2010 from US online Apple store).
Unfortunately, it's incredible to say my Macbook Pro Hard Drive Cable required 3 times of replacements within 2 years. The first time of mal-function happen in the warranty period, so Authorized Apple Office replaced it. 6 months later, the bad "symptom" happen again with question mark folder on boot up screen and recovered after replacement of used hard drive cable. Six months later, question mark folder boot screen happen again and disappear after install a good HDD cable from another Macbook Pro.
You may imagine my disappointed to see "periodic" and costly repairs of my Macbook. It's unbeliveable for quality of an Apple product, which should have been better. One time of repair could be explained as "unlucky" or mistake on production line. 3 times within 2 years can not say as sporadic or random mistake. Obviously, there is an systemic problem with Apple HDD cables and  I can not sure it would be the last time I have spent money and time to replace a new cable. I worked in Vietnam, where it's not always easy to buy a new spare parts of Apple products.
Honestly, I never seen any of my PC laptops get any wrong on their HDD cable like my poor Macbook.
My case would be a very bad experience for an Macbook user.
Anyone can tell me how to prevent HDD cable from bad situation again?
Thank you very much in advance
    Regards

    Dad of Noel wrote:

I doubt it. However, you should submit a complaint to Apple (this is not the right place for it).

Actually, that's not obvious at all.
First, SATA cable issues are not specific to Apple. You can find, for instance, plenty of complaints on Toshiba forums. (Off-hand, it does seem to me that we didn't use to have so many problems with the old, parallel, ATA cables, but I can't be sure.)
Second, you could, for instance, have a small random manufacturing defect in a component which touches the cable. When the component warms up, that defect might damage the cable. This would explain the short life of the cables in your machine w/o the necessity of postulating a systemic issue. Of course, this is pure speculation, but it demonstrates the defect in your logic.
Third, the fact is that we, the consumers, demand ever more powerful products, in ever smaller sizes and comparatively lower prices. Apple, which is no different from any other major corp, is reacting by, among other measures, cutting corners on quality (as well as finding cheaper labour elsewhere). This is the reality which all of us have helped to bring about.
I know full well that this is cold comfort to you. But I'm afraid there is nothing else. For most of us, life is hard, bitter, and unfair.
If I were you, I'd make sure to keep all the documentation about the SATA cable problems, and, if it happened again, I'd complain once more to Apple, this time escalating it as far up the corporate food chain as I could.

  • Finder crashes anytime I try to transfer files onto external HDD

I recently had to have the HDD cable inside my MBP replaced because it was not working properly. After it was installed I was able to do a clean install of OS X 10.6 and after fully updating to 10.6.8 I installed ML 10.8.2 everything was working perfectly then all of a sudden I am no longer able to transfer files from my desktop onto any external HDD. I thought there might be something wrong with the external HDD but I can copy items off of it onto the desktop with no problem and was even able to place things on it before finder started randomly freezing. The freeze starts off with the spinning beach ball, and everything else seems to be working until i switch to a different application then they all start freezing.
Is there any way to solve this without having to completley do a clean install all over again?

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:
