Changing to Wireless

My PC seems to have had its day and I'm thinking of buying a laptop and changing to a wireless connection. (Currently use a Voyager 220V modem.)  Could anyone outline the procedure? Do I simply change my broadband package and receive a free hub and wireless connection, or do I have to buy the equipment and carry on with my current contract?    Many thanks.  Please keep all replies very simple!!

Welcome to the forum.
Its most unlikely that if you are buying a laptop now, it wont be able to connect by wireless.  Having said that, you can still have a fixed connection at home, and wireless when out and about.  If you join BT Fon, you will be able use BT openzone and others customers hubs who are also Fon members when out and about for £0 - provided you are in range. A quick google on BTOpenzone and BT Fon will brief you fully on the detail.
If you are out of contract with your BT broadband, you can certainly ring BT to renew your BB contract, and they will almost certainly give you a hub for free.  If you are in contract for BB, you can buy a BT hub [latest is version 3] from the BT online shop, or any other wireless router.
Setting up a wireless connection is easy, come back here if you get stuck and someone will help.
Hope that answers your question, if not [or not fully], come back again.

  • Can't change my wireless interface channel via iwconfig

Hello community, I'm trying to change my wireless channel 'cause aireplay-ng commands me to do it manually.
    What I do:
    sudo ifconfig mon0 down
    sudo iwconfig mon0 channel 5

SET failed on device mon0 ; Device or resource busy.
No matter what I do, I get this error message...

The journal shows nothing related to the interface. Not even when I execute the airmon command nor when I try to change the interface channel...

  • Sudden change in wireless range

I've had Fios for TV and Internet in my home for about 10 months now. No problems. I keep the router — the standard MI424WR — in an office on the ground floor. Two days ago, during the bad snowstorm, I am online (Toshiba Satellite running Windows XP) and watching TV upstairs when my service is interrupted — very briefly. My TV programming went out maybe three times in the span of a minute. The longest outage was about 10 seconds. The power stayed on, just the programming went off. Then the TV comes back on and everything is fine. But I notice that I can't navigate the Internet. "Internet Explorer cannot display the Web page."
So I go downstairs and turn the modem off for a few seconds and turn it back on. I come upstairs and restart my computer. That usually works, but this time I get the "limited or no connectivity" message, although it is telling me the signal strength is excellent. I try retyping my WEP key, unplugging the router, resetting the router — nothing. On my television, I have the wireless Roku box that streams Netflix movies. I turn that on. That still works. And I can still pick up WiFi on my phone. So I'm thinking the problem is with my computer. The desktop that my router is hooked up to downstairs still works, so I spend a couple hours looking up Web solutions with no success. Then I bring the laptop downstairs. I use a cable to plug it in to the router. I'm back online. In fact, it I even lose the "limited or no connectivity" message. I unplug the cable and I'm still connected.
A few minutes and a couple experiments later and I finally realize that I stay connected wirelessly as long as I am very close to the router. If I stray too far, I get "limited or no connectivity" and if I wander back, I reconnect. Now I don't know what to think. I've never had any problem like this before. And to confuse me even more, when I take a close look at the settings on the wireless Roku box, it says my signal strength is "poor." Prior to this incident, I don't think I had ever taken notice of that so I don't know if anything has changed.
So to make a long story even longer, I guess my question is: Does this sound like a problem with a setting on the router or with the computer?

You can try changing the channel on  the router. The best channels to use are 1, 6,11. To change the wireless channel on the router: log into the management page of the router, click on wireless settings, click on basic security settings, go to option #3 and choose the channel you want, then go to the bottom of the page and click save. You may want to try all 3 channels to see which one gets the best signal.

  • I cannot change the wireless LAN encryption WEP settings

    Dear all,
I have a WRC-1000 which I did not use for about year and a half. Now I reconnected the unit and during the configuration I cannot change the wireless LAN settings for security (WEP). No matter what I do it keeps stuck on 128 bit WEP.
It also does not show the WEP key settings (so the screen where I should configure the WEP key).
This is what I have done so far: Full reset, reload default configuration, updated to latest firmware. Still no change. I suspect a hardware failure. Is this a memory failure (flash)??
    Can someone help me out?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi
Do you speak about the router settings or about the WLan setting on the notebook???
Did you try to use a Wlan connectivity tool like Intel ProSet Utility or Atheros WLan client utility?
Depending on your WLan card I would recommend checking these both tools and try to establish the WLan connection using one of these programs!

    On your Mac......
Click the Finder icon (that smiley face on the left side of the dock)
    Open Applications
    Open Utilities
    Open AirPort Utility
Click on the picture of the AirPort Extreme, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Edit / backspace out the current Wireless Password entry
Do the same to Verify the new password
It might be a good idea to write down the new password and store the info in a safe place
Click Update in the upper right corner of the window and allow a full minute for the AirPort Extreme to restart

  • WRT54GL: setup suddenly won't let me change the wireless channel anymore

I have a Linksys WRT54GL version 1.1. The firmware is 4.30.11 (European version).
In the Basic Wireless Settings I can't change the Wireless Channel. It remains at channel 1, and I simply can't alter it.
This is strange, because in earlier firmware versions, I was able to change the channel without any problems at all. I would like to continue to use this firmware version. How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance, Pjotr.
Message Edited by pjotr123 on 04-01-2008 10:25 AM

Not a browser thing; I tried Firefox, Epiphany and Konqueror. I found the solution, however!
Apparently a small bug in the firmware, but it can be circumvented. Changing wireless channels becomes impossible when in the Advanced Wireless Settings, SecureEasySetup is disabled.
So all you have to do to change wireless channels, is to enable SecureEasySetup. You have to keep it enabled, however: disabling it after a successful channel change, reverts the wireless channel to number 1 again and keeps it locked again.
For the time being (until Linksys fixes this bug), I will have to be satisfied with channel 1. Because I dislike the one-button-security thing SES, and I prefer to define my own security manually. Also I fear an accidental button-pressing.... :-)
    Thanks anyway for your assistance.
    Greetz, Pjotr.

Hi I run the 6.0.2 patch and I stiil have the same problem, no wifi connection even if i change the wireless antenna and the security any ideas??

There are two steps to the update for an iPhone 5. First you run the patch then you update the iOS. Did you do both? And does iOS 6.0.2 show up in Settings > General > About > Version
The first thing apple will tell you to do if you bring them the phone is to reset the phone. Try that before going any further.
First thing to try is to reset your device. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider should one appear until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the device restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • [SOLVED] Changed daemons & wireless stopped working

So my problem started after I edited rc.conf to change my daemon array and rebooted. I simply removed network from the daemons sections, rebooted, and upon reboot networkmanager showed no wireless connection. So I re-edited my rc.conf file and placed network back where it was, rebooted again, and the problem still exists.
In rc.conf my networking section looks like this:
    eth0="dhcp"
    wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0 wlan0)
In rc.conf my daemons sections looks like this:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond alsa dbus hal networkmanager)
    iwconfig output:
    [root@N01 ~]# iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    eth0 no wireless extensions.

Ok just for reference, I went here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43/devices to double check that I had the proper driver installed. the site told me to issue the following:

the part in brackets at the end is the pci id: [14e4:4318] which tells me that my device is supported by the b43 driver, according to the chart here: http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri … CI_devices
I have reinstalled b43-fwcutter and the firmware for my b4318. I also tried the rmmod and modprobe commands to no avail.

  • Airport (via Keychain I think) Keeps Changing My Wireless Network Key

I think my airport express utility is is changing the stored 128 bit WEP key for my XP wireless utility. Is is possible that this could happen via keychain? If so, how do I delete keychain entries in windows XP? Thanks.

It is asking for your security phrase not the router's password, in case you are entering the wrong password. If you are sure you are entering the correct phrase, you can reset your router to factory defaults then set up your security again.

  • Change default wireless dhcp

I want to deploy an Airport in an existing network address space of 10.90.8.0. The default wireless dhcp address space is 10.0.1..0. Can I change that default or must I reassign all ip address to conform with the Airport default?

If you configure the AirPort Express in Bridge Mode, it will pick up an IP address from your "main" router.
If you have the AirPort Express configured to provide DHCP services and hand out IP addresses, then those addresses will be limited to the 10.0.x.x range. The Express can also provide addresses in the 192.168.x.x range and 172.16.x.x range as well.

I just got a wireless router from my internet provider (Telus).  My Time Capsule is blinking yellow.  I used to have ethernet cable in TC from Telus old router (via phone) but now all is wireless.  Where do I go on MBPro to change settings so TC blinks green?
    Inge

Start with a factory reset and do setup over again.
If the DSL modem is working as router.. which will be the case for most people then the TC must be in bridge mode..
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.

  • How to change the wireless driver?

    Well, firstly, hello all.

I followed all the steps on the wiki, but still when I look on the info of NetworkManager, it says I use the rtl8180 driver. How could I change this?

  • Batch file to change routers Wireless name

Hi Guys, i have a wireless router Netgear N150.
By default this router has a name & i want to change this name to a desired name by batch file or by any scripting language.
Any ideas or suggestions??? i would be grateful to you guys.
    Thank you

Netgear firmware release 40 is required on routers that support soap:
    http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24497/~/wndr4500-firmware-version-1.0.1.40
It is clear that all routers will now support both SOAP and OMI.  Many currently support SNMP but most small routers and devices do not.e
All Cisco routers support telnt except the consumer routers.  If you bought your router at Staples or Best Buy it will likely not support telnet.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
