Choice of upload protocol

I am setting up an application based around a browser interface (my own JSPs to replace the standard IFS interface), where the user can upload custom documents, including content files. These might be large (up to 1 or 2 Mb say) or small, text and non-text, maybe several files for one custom IFS object. Can anyone advise on the relative merits of the different protocols available - HTTP, FTP, SMTP ?

Well, I am developing a JSP-based system and I have just developed an HTTP-POST upload that is working well. As to relative merits, I chose the HTTP-POST so I wouldn't have to run the FTP server and because I wanted fine-grained control over what users do. I'm working on a document explaining how to do it since it has been frequently asked about on this forum. I'll post it when I (eventually) get it finished. Let me know if you want more details in the meantime.

Best data upload protocol.

There is no best. What CAN you use? If FTP is an option (and make it SFTP) then of course go for that, then you don't have to be bothered by the clunky HTTP file upload.

How about a proper existing SFTP client? There is absolutely no reason at all why that should be anything Java related.

How about finding and solving the source of your memory leaks?

Linking to files on a network. How can I get Contribute to NOT upload a copy?

This is killing me! In Dreamweaver, when I put in a crazy URL
that goes to a file on someones computer on my local network, and
hit Upload, I get a nice popup asking if I want to copy the file in
question to the web server. I say no, and all is well.
However, it appears Contribute doesn't give you this choice,
and uploads every single file you linked to automatically with no
warning, no way to shut it off.
I might very well lose a client over this behaviour. Having
never used contribute for a intranet, this never came up in the
past. I can not use 2 copies of all the files. The documents in
question are Word and Excel files that get updated daily and by a
zillion different people.
Please, please, anyone, do you know a workaround for this? A
plugin, a secret method, anything?
I thought I had a workaround, but now don't. I was going to
have all Contribute users have a Role that does not let them
publish, only send for approval. Then the one person in the
organization that has Dreamweaver and not Contribute, would simply
upload the info and hit the "no" button for uploading files. But
I'm sure that won't work.
HELP! I'm pleading with anyone!

Yes, I want the URL to the data file to be live. I just want
Contribute to NOT physically copy the file, then re-write it's own
link. That's what Contribute does, and it's absolutely insane. If I
type in a URL to a file, then why can't I leave the stupid URL
alone? There is to be no uploading of the file at all, period. It
is to stay where it is at.
This is an Intranet, not a www site. I just don't see why
Adobe/Macromedia would choose to over-ride a simple URL to a file.
It is such a major problem in this case, that we will not be able
to use Dreamweaver or Contribute at all ever.
The only, and I mean ONLY work around Ive come up with is to
somehow make a Symbolic Link, or alias, of the file and go ahead
and have it on the web server so that Contribute sees it's already
there and won't copy a new one over.
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Iweb uploading error

why is it i keep getting such errors after publishing and uploading my iweb site through filezilla or cyberduck? its was ok before and when i editted a few pages, its showing this problems. Even for my other sites as well whenevetr i try to reupload.

You need to use your FTP application to look at where the files are being uploaded to on the server or use your host's file manager.
With iWeb, you have a choice of uploading the whole folder of files along with the external index.html file or to upload the contents of the folder. In both cases, you need to identify the root folder and upload to that.
The iWeb FTP uses the first method and publishing to a local folder and uploading via FTP gives you a choice of either...

User cannot upload an xlsx file with charts to document library

I have a number of users who are unable to upload documents to document libraries. When they attempt to upload, it will either just sit there like it's working but never finish or display an Internet Explorer cannot display this page screen. I have narrowed
it down to the content of the file being the issue. The file is under 1MB in size so it isn't a size issue.
Specific case:
1.User trying to upload an xlsx file and it fails.
2.I try to upload the file (win7 Sp1) and it uploads fine.
3.I modified the file by removing 5 charts.
4.User tried to upload the file again and it uploaded fine.
So based on this it appears that the charts are causing the issue. I remember reading something a while back about SharePoint using different upload protocols based on the complexity of the document but I can't seem to find any info on that anymore.
This issue has been intermittent over the last few months. It magically resolves itself after a random period of time then comes back.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Info Record Upload

Hi,
We are going for Go Live later this month.I want to have a suggestion regarding the upload of info records.Since client is moving from existing system to SAP for the first time, do we need to have the info recs also created/uploaded first.
I mean how info records will be taken care off.Do we need to have them created before go live or as and when the transactions happen after go live,it will create them.
What should be approach for info records ?

Imovie 11 youtube upload in HD

Why is it that after upgrading to iLife 11 I can only upload to youtube with the mobile option. In the previous version I had the ability to check the other larger resolutions. But in this version the radiobuttons are greyed out.

I am experiencing a similar problem. I am finding that iMovie '11 is giving me a choice to upload to YouTube in either Large, Medium or Mobile format, but I cannot chose all three formats, which is what I would like, and which is how iMovie '09 worked. So I chose the Large format first, and sure enough, when I went to look at my movie on my iPhone an error message came up saying something like "The author of this video has chosen not to allow the viewing of this video on iPhones" ... which of course is ridiculous and a huge BUG because I can't see how this is a FEATURE. So I go back to iMovie and I upload a "Mobile" version of the movie and sure enough it uploads, but to a different URL !!! So now you get different URLs for differnet sizes of the movies?? This is a major inconvenience and I wish it would get fixed soon.

Best way to upload and store image file using struts

Hello there,
I'm having two choices for uploading image files(not huge image files) using struts a) to store the image in application server's directory
b) to store the image files as BLOB in database.
Although each of the image files have to be associated with unique ID to identify the image for re-display.
Which is the best option. application server's directory or database

I think storing it in the application server directory would probably allow for faster access, is easier to code, and doesn't depend on db connectivity.
As for the unique id, you could probably use the File.createTemporaryFile method--it returns a unique id for every file in a directory, given a prefix & suffix. You just have to remember to change the extension from a .tmp to the image format you're using.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Any alterative application upload methods?

Hey all,
My app is 1 gigabyte in size and I'm having problems with the upload. With my Internet connection the upload should take about 3 hours, but when I check back after about an hour the upload screen is gone and I see a page saying the connection is Reset.
I know that 1+ GB app size is allowed because some of the navigation apps are greater than 1 GB.
Are there any alternative upload methods?

Devs have two choices for uploading apps...
One is via a web broswer and iTunes Connect.
The other is 'Application Loader'....which is recommended for larger apps.
Apple recommends the loader for binaries that are over 200MB. You can find the loader by following these steps from within iTunes Connect:
• Choose Manage Your Applications
• Scroll to the bottom of the page
• Click the Get Application Loader link
• Click the Download Developer Guide link as well if you don't have this document yet.
To use app loader, during the process of adding a new application to the App Store, when prompted in iTunes Connect (on the Upload tab), click the checkbox that says Check here to upload your binary later....then run Application Loader and it will respond and ask which binary, etc.

Can one upload sites to site hosting services other than Business Catalyst? If so then how?

File > Upload to FTP Host...
or
File > Export as HTML... then use an FTP application of your choice to upload the set of exported files and folders to your hosting provider.

Questions on Golive - DW8 Migration

I'm a long-time GoLive user - I started testing both apps at
v. 1.0, and Dreamwever didn't get good until version 3, but by that
time I was heavily invested in GoLive.
I now am ready to switch, but i've got a laundry list of
questions of the "I know how to do it in GoLive, how do I do it in
DW?" variety? I've committed to switching, so I'm not looking to
debate which is better - I just want to know how to keep my
productivity up during (and after) the transition
If anyone cares to educate me, i'd love some assistance:
1)I've got 400+ pages and files in one of the 50+ sites that
I work on regularly. So i'm not intimately familiar with the layout
of this particular site. I know I need to edit the contact us page,
but I don't remember if its called contactus.html, or
/about/contact.html or /buried/deep/in/bowels/of/site/contact.html.
In Golive, I type 'contact' into the search box in the site
management window and all files with the word 'contact' pop up for
me to inspect and see which one I want to edit.
How can I quickly find a page/image/file in Dreamweaver if I
know (a portion of) the name?
2)I've got a PDF file in my site that I need to make sure is
linked in, and see which pages are linked to it. In Golive, there's
a 'link in/out' window that shows me all links to and from a
page/image/file. Is there some such beast in Dreamweaver? Looking
in the archives, all I see is the 'delete the file and then see
which pages it says you'll be modifying' method, which seems scary
to me, since my fingers sometimes move of their own accord and I
don't want to REALLY delete the file
3)This whole 'put dependent files' thing has me frustrated.
Lets assume i'm working on a site that I just built from scratch
today, and it has lots of little images. I've uploaded the entire
site to the server, but now I need to create a new image and add it
to one page. In Golive, i'd click the 'upload modified files'
button, and those two files would be uploaded.
In DW8, best I can understand it, I click the 'upload' button
for the page, and I'm given the choice to 'upload dependent files'.
This uploads all 30 images associated with this page, even tho they
weren't changed. Is there some better way to do this?
Likewise, if I just edited an image deep in the heirarchy of
the site, but didn't edit the page, and I only need to upload that
image, is there any button for checking modified files so I don't
have to bother uploading the entire page & images again? This
wouldn't be an issue if DW8 didn't make me wait until the upload
was done before letting me work on something else. I thought this
was something that DW had better than Golive for a while and now
they've lost that feature?
4)Keyboard shortcuts for site window. This may be a Mac OS X
thing, but I would think that a program more geared towards
'coders' rather than 'designers' would be more keyboard-friendly. I
want to be able to navigate the 'files' window of my site by
keyboard - arrows up /down to find a folder, Command-arrow
down/right to open a folder and continue navigating, etc... At
least on my system, this doesn't work - no way to open a folder
other than double-click on it. Am I missing something?
5)SFTP with Authentication - I'm able to successfully connect
to my SFTP server using Transmit/Interarchy, etc, but not
Dreamweaver. I found an old post that says that DW MX doesn't
support non-password authentication - is this true for DW 8 as
well?

Bump - I did figure out # 3.5 above - I found the 'select
modified files' and it will tell me everything I modified that day.
Of course, that doesn't help when I work on 14 files in the morning
and 2 in the afternoon - its still going to select and therefore
upload all 16, but at least that's better than all 300+ files.
I'm most interested to see what people say about #1 and #2 -
how do I find a file in my large site, and how do I find out what
pages are linked to a specific page or image, other then by
'almost-deleting' it?

hey all
ok i know i am doing something stupid...have read this entire bloody forum and still not getting it..
i have two domain.sites2 in my lib/appsupp/iweb folder..when i click on one iweb opens it up, can edit, publish to my dotmac account all good.
but...the usual problem: i can only publish one without the other one being ''over-rided''
one of the sites has domain forwarding thru yahoo.
i tried publishing that one to a folder and replacing the ''index.html'' on my idisc but that just took me to ''safari cannot find server'' yet when i go inside idisc/sites/ and go into one of the site folders and click on the 'index.html'' it takes me to the site on safari but the url is really long and starts with ''volume'' something i don't think i've seen before.
shouldn't the urls be ''web.mac.com/username/sitename?? if so, how do i make that happen? i have read all the links here on the forum but none are working for me. Er, or I am just not getting it. Most likely the latter.

You are not alone! I had the same problem and was on this forum a few weeks ago. None of this makes sense to me, either. Here's what I did to solve my problem:
1. If you can afford about $10 a year plus a reasonable hosting fee, buy a new domain name and hosting service at godaddy.com. They are wonderful. Dotmac ***** for this purpose.
2. Download an easy ftp software like Transmit (from Apple Downloads for free.)
3. In iWeb, drag and drop the website you want to publish to your new domain name to the Top of the iWeb list on the left side panel. Make sure it now appears on top of the list of your websites.
4. In the File menu, "Publish to a Folder." Just choose your desktop. ALL your websites will get copied to your desktop in respective folders, as well as an index page (index.html) for your desired website. Trash the other website folders and the index.html file. It will not effect your originals in iWeb. (You can do this now or later, and another index.html lives within the correct folder that you leave on your desktop.)
5. Use Transmit (or your ftp of choice) to Upload the contents of the Folder with your new website to your domain server. Do NOT upload the folder itself - choose only the contents WITHIN the folder.
6. Whenever you want to update this website, make sure the old folder on your desktop is trashed first.
Done. I hope this helps. It's awkward but it beats doing the fancy footwork with all these sites folders, etc. Let me know if this works for you.

Not really the best way to go. You'll waste a lot of time and it may not work for your receiver. Most email hosts have file size limits that make emailing video files a problem. Better choice is upload you video to YouTube or some other file sharing site then email a link.

Several problems, possibly due to updates.[SOLVED]

My touchpad just stopped working.
My flash drive needs to be plugged in at boot to mount.
My desktop has failed to load the background a couple times.
I updated the system mid afternoon.
I have fiddled with rc.conf to try to fix wireless, but I didn't change anything that should affect this.

Restarting hal, dbus does not help. I'm pretty sure I had the flash drive working within the last week. I noticed today, after it stopped working, that system>preferences>removable drives and media no longer has the tab that lets me choose options about mounting and browsing flash drives.

Importing *.url favorites (from a HDD folder) into Mac - HELP?!

Background:
My old PC (running Win. XP) hard disc drive failed, and I had a local computer shop clear the contents onto a 500GB external HDD as I couldn't do it.
Issue:
They have put the favorites into a folder, simply with all the links down as .url ending files. eg:
remember to do this.url
shop link.url
website link.url
etc...
How on earth do I get these into Safari (or even Firefox) on my Mac? I tried importing with both browsers, but they can't recognise the filetype it seems. While Safari (but NOT Firefox) can open each link individually if I click on it, as I have 1000+ in here, I can't possibly open them all rename and resave; I need to do a mass-import job.
(Note I don't have access to a Windows machine, and importantly they are coming from a file on a separate HDD and not from Windows machine where they can perhaps be exported out.)

Finally found this out myself...
You will need (borrow): *a Windows machine (or have it running in bootcamp/virtual machine on mac)*.

– copy this .htm file onto your Mac somewhere (via usb stick/email, again), open *Safari>File>Import Bookmarks*, and they'll appear inside Safari as an imported set of bookmarks. (NB: you may/may not have to change the file ending from .htm to .html manually before importing for it to work.)
Et voila!
Now you can do what you like with them (including re-sorting/re-filing, or importing/exporting to Firefox/other browser of choice, or upload to online bookmark site, or ... well you get the idea).
Pain in the backside you can't do this natively inside OS X, but at least there IS a solution. Shame it took me hours to work it out!
