Cisco 2950 and Dell Powerconnect 5224

I am trying to Cascade a cisco 2950 and dell powerconnect 5224. I am connecting port 32 on the 2950 and port 24 (gigport) on the dell. Any idea on how I can get the cascading to work? This is what I have on the Dell and the cisco.
Dell Powerconnect 5224:
interface ethernet 1/24
switchport allowed vlan add 1 untagged
switchport native vlan 1
switchport mode trunk
switchport allowed vlan add 1,10 tagged
Cisco 2950:
interface FastEthernet0/32
switchport access vlan 10
switchport mode trunk
Dell documentationon casdcading between powerconnect and catalyst 4000 talks about setting up GVRP on both the dell and cisco switches. However, 2950 doesn't have GVRP.
http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pwcnt/en/app_note_4.pdf
Any ideas, tips. Thanks.

Try this instead:
Dell:
interface ethernet 1/24
switchport allowed vlan add 1 untagged
switchport native vlan 1
switchport mode trunk
switchport allowed vlan add 10 tagged
Cisco 2950:
interface FastEthernet0/32
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allow vlan 1,10
switchport nonegotiate
You don't need "switchport access vlan 10" on the Cisco because it's not in access mode, it's in trunk mode. And on the Dell you don't want vlan 1 to be tagged and untagged.
Good luck.

  • VLAN and STP compitability between Cisco 2950 and SRW2048

How Cisco 2950 and Linksys SRW2048 switches can be combined to work fine with more than one VLAN's and STP?? I want both switches to support three VLAN's and STP for loop free network. Can some body help me out to combine linksys and cisco switches to interconnect to form my Network???

I believe that the SRW2048 is a 48 port managed switch. The easiest way to set the VLAN and STP configuration of is to access the web utility of this switch via 192.168.1.254. You have to go to VLAN Management and he needs to create the VLANs. The default VLAN of the switch is VLAN 1. You need to create 2 more VLANs by choosing the VLAN IDs and the name you want for these VLANs.
After creating the VLANS, you need to determine the LAN of the switch you want to assign to each VLAN and the Trunk port or the port where you need to connect the SRW2048 to the Cisco 2950 switch. Go to the port setting and make this port as “truck”, and leave the other ports as “access”. Go to VLAN to ports and manually allocate the each LAN ports to the desired VLAN ID number. Take note that all ports that are members of VLAN1 should be “untagged” and the rest should be “tagged”. Save the settings you made.
The STP configuration for the SRW2048 can be found also in the web utility. Just go to the Spanning Tree tab and setup your desired STP configuration.
For the Cisco 2950, I am not quite sure on how to create these settings but I saw a useful link that might help you:

  • ISCSI and Dell PowerConnect 6224

We have a Virtualization project in the early design stages utilizing VMWare and a iSCSI SAN environment.
We are a Cisco only data center at present, but one vendor quote has all Dell equipment included.
For switching they have specified the PowerConnect 6224 (24 Gbit ports).
A second vendor quote is all IBM equipment, but leaves out the network switching equipment (our choice).
I'd like to keep our data center a Cisco only environment.  I need to understand what Catalyst switch(s) would be comparable
to the PowerConnect 6224.   A 24 port switch was quoted.  May need a pair for failover depending upon
Today we use a pair of Cisco Catalyst 3750G (24 port) L3 switches for our core distribution environment.
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Joe

    Joe Campbell:
Why do you need to keep it an all-Cisco shop?
My shop deployed the Dells and we loved them. Just set up and walk away.
The Dell PowerConnect 6200 and 8000 series switches are very competitive. The 6224's 24-gig ports operate at wire speed with a non-blocking backplane, plus a zero-loss throughput. They offer up to four 10G SFP+, XFP, 10G-Base-T and CX4 uplinks. They also offer stackability of up to 12 switches (576 ports), advenaced QoS and security features.
The Dell 6200s are also iSCSI optimized, which no Cisco switch offers.
    Read the tolly Group's reviews.
    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pwcnt/en/tolly_pwcnt6200_test.pdf
If you want to know which Cisco switch offers the same functionality, go to Cisco's website and match them. But be assured that the Cisco switch will be anywhere between 3 to 5 times the cost of the Dell 6200s.

  • Configuring wired 802.1x with Cisco 2950 and NPS 2012 problem

    Hi,
I am trying to setup wired authentication on my corporate network. For testing purposes, I have setup a Cisco 2950 switch for RADIUS authentication.
On the first day of the test, access messages were appearing on the event log of the 2012 Server and  we were trying to address the issues with EAP and policy.(Network Policy and Access services)
Then, suddenly no events are written to the event log for the wired authentication. Accounting data is written to the log file at c:\windows\system32\logfiles, but nothing happens on the event log as if the NPS is not answering. We are using the same server for wireless 802.1x and all is working fine.
Checking the wired autoconfig log on the client, Restart Reason : Onex Auth Timeout appears.
    Logging seems to be configured properly, there are no entries in event log. Below is the debug information from the 2950 switch;

  • Connect cisco 3750X and Dell N4032F

    Hi,
I need to connect 2 diferent networks (192.168.x.x vs 10.44.x.x). this connection will be temporal because network 192.168.x.x will be migrated to 10.44.x.x.
On one side I have a Dell N4032F (L3) and on the other side a Cisco 3750X. What I need is just visibility between them? Wich is the best way to do it.
    Thanks

    Hi,
On the 3750X, you need to configure the IP address on the interface connecting to Dell.
    example:
    config t
    interface gix/x
    ip address 10.44.1.1 255.255.255.0
    no sh
Not sure what you need on the Dell side.

Scanrio: In head office there is Dell EqualLogic PS series and in branch also same for replicaiotn from head office to branch i want to know the ios feature set of Switch and Router.

If the Dell EqualLogic systems are using iSCSI to communicate there is no specific feature required on the Cisco gear. The Cisco gear will pass iSCSI traffic just like any other IP traffic.
    Make sense?

  • 6513 stp root bridge and Dell powerconnect 5316 issue

    Hi everyone,
have this issue with root bridge on on a vlan being learnt incorrectly by itself from another vlan.
    The topology is this
    6513        vlan 10       interface f4/10   Dell 5316 interface g11   vlan 1
                    vlan 20       interface f4/20                   interface g16   vlan 20
The 6513 vlan 10 priority 12228                 Dell configured with classic stp and priority 32768
                    vlan 20 priority 8192
pvst+ used on ios 12.1 (i know really old, but going to be de-commissioned any way).
Now on the cisco switch a show spanning-tree vl 20 it is entered and reports its the root for this vlan, ok correct there.
But when this is done for vlan 10 it reports that the root brodge is via f4/10 with the priority and mac address of vlan 20.
Somehow this shows that vlan 10 is getting bpdu's via the Dell 5316 from vlan 20 . The blade server connectivity is fine.
    Thanks for any advice
    Cheers
    TJ.

    Hi Reza,
Inherited issue. The ports are set to access. The servers are regular Windows servers (2008).
I agree would have been a better configured setup done that way with an etherchanel.
Also I noted that the interfaces on the Dell are set to untagged.
    Cheers

  • Need help with troubleshooting VPN betwen Cisco 2911 and Dell Sonicwall 4060

    Hello all,
I am trying to set up a VPN Tunnel between the devices mentioned above.  The tunnel appears to be established, but I've encountered some issues along the way.  I can ping from the Cisco 2911 to a server behind the Sonicwall, but I cannot ping from that server to the Cisco router unless the router is pinging the server at the same time.  What should I do to fix this problem?
UPDATE:  The tunnel is no longer working between the two devices.  The end result I am looking for is to have a VPN tunnel between these two devices which does NAT and allows me to ping across without having to constantly ping to keep the session open.  Before the tunnel went down, I was able to ping that server behind the sonicwall using a port on the inside of the firewall as a source port for the ping, and at one point I was able to ping back to the router from the server, but was unable to ping beyond that interface.  I think the problem that I am running into has to do with the zone-based firewall configurations that are already on the router.  I don't want to mess with those configurations already in place, but I am not sure how to get this tunnel working.  I'm fairly certain I need to start from the beginning in regards to this tunnel, but I cannot figure out how to configure this the right way.
Thanks in advance for any help

Finally the testing is successful on Sonicwall NSA 240 as well with Cisco ASA. Actually somehow Sonicwall firewall was discovering my VPN Box's Public leg (Private IP (10.10.50.10)) as well, which was behind a Live Peer IP (203.124.x.x). As per security policies it shouldnt have been discovered on the remote end. i will bring this in Cisco TAC notice.
Logs of Sonicwall were showing ASA local ike id as "203.124.x.x" & ASA Remote ike id "10.10.50.10".
Sonicwall sets these two parameters with PSK (local ike id & remote ike id). This is other than setting the Peer IP. i asked my client to add my ASA actual and NAT IP in these two parameters and the VPN got UP.

  • Monitor Dell Powerconnect Switches/Routers using SCOM 2012

    Hello,
We are trying to find a way to monitor approximately 20-25 Dell Powerconnect switches/routers (models 5324,5424,5448,5548,6224,6024) through SCOM 2012.
Using SCOM network discovery we are able to get all Dell Powerconnect switches listed, but we are unable to get a network node dashboard, nor vicinity view 1 or 2 hops further. We are able to only see connected network printers and some serial/ethernet devices
    we have.
In addition, SCOM 2012 seems to be able to recognize the model of only Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches. We have found that on the SCOM management server the "C:\Program Files\System Center 2012\Operations Manager\Server\NetworkMonitoring\conf\discovery\oid2type_Dell.conf"
only lists Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches as well as several models from the 3000 series.
We have contacted Dell PRO support, but their reply was that there is no management pack for SCOM available for their networking devices.
Would it be recommended to use http://xsnmp.codeplex.com/ on SCOM 2012 to monitor those switches and get a network digram view or are there any plans to include those MIBs in a future CU or SP of SCOM 2012?

    Hi Alex
Network monitoring has changed from SCOM 2007 R2 to SCOM 2012 so this statement
"but if this works for SCOM 2007, it should apply to SCOM 2012"
is not accurate when it comes to network monitoring:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2011/10/24/migrating-operations-manager-2007-network-monitoring.aspx
Would it be recommended to use http://xsnmp.codeplex.com/ on SCOM 2012?
The codeplex solutions for SCOM 2007 R2 will not work on a new \ clean install of SCOM 2012 (if you upgrade from SCOM 2007 R2 they continue to work as legacy devices but you can't add more monitoring).
SCOM 2012 seems to be able to recognize the model of only Dell Powerconnect 5224 switches
What do you mean by recoginse? SCOM can discover network devices but there is an "approved" list that allows for extended monitoring:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26831
You should still be able to discover and monitor other devices though:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2011/09/20/what-gets-monitored-with-system-center-operations-manager-2012-network-monitoring.aspx

You will need to press the active/standby button on the RPS for the internal power supply in the switch to take over. Note that this can cause the switch to reload and do it in your maintenance window if this switch is in production.

  • Dell PowerConnect 6248 VLANs

Hello,I am 100% sure I am overthinking this, and wanted to ask some questions about my Dell PowerConnect 6248s.I am trying to colocate a Cisco 7940G IP Phone with a PC on the same drop. The Cisco phones have a built in switch for this.Currently I have a flat network (no VLANs) and my routing is done through a Barracuda Firewall. On port 5 of my Barracuda Firewall, it is connected to a stack of 5 Dell PowerConnect 6248's. The subnet is 172.16.4.0/24. The IP address of the switch stack is 172.16.4.253 and the Default Gateway is the IP address of the Barracuda at 172.16.4.254. All traffic is passing over the default VLAN 1 (which on the 62XX is non routable).Long story short - on the 172.16.4.0/24 network, I have 226 static connections. There are not enough IPs left to add the phones. I would like to setup VLAN 200in the 172.16.5.0/24...

Make sure the community string used is properly defined in Accounts.
To troubleshoot you can create a custom rule with target class as Node & keeping the OID as blank which should fetch all types of events from those switches.
If there is no data-- Community string could be a problem
If there is data-- cross check the OIDs in those alerts.
    Hope this helps !!

  • Cisco 2950 - 24 WS switch express install issue

    Hi Guys,
Got a Cisco 2950 24 port switch that I need to setup and I can't seem to get the page for Express install
In firefox when trying to connect to 10.0.0.1 I get the message "connection was reset" in internet explorer "page cannot be displayed"
when doing a arp -a I can see that the switch does get the IP address 10.0.0.1 and I can also ping the switch ok.
Have followed the instructions and reset the switch and all the mode lights are green etc.
my ethernet adapter does get the address 10.0.0.2 given from the switch (however connectivity is limited / not sure if this is supposed to be like this or not)
have tried earlier versions of firefox (even 1x 2x 3x 4x) etc and also older versions of IE incase there is something weird going on there. have also tried using a mac and trying safari which gives similar results.
So i think the http server is enabled on the switch, as it should be by default when it is reset etc. according to cisco's documentation.
I know using the console cable would be alot easier however I don't have one available and not easy for me to get
any ideas? has anyone ever successfully been able to use this express install  web page on a cisco 2950 before? It has Version 12.1(22)EA14 so express install should work on this switch!
    cheers,

managed to get hold of a console cable. checked switch and http-server command was enabled so have no idea why this feature was not working...
did some research and someone suggested that it is fussy with the version of java you are running on the pc ( requires old version of java?) .. possibly that may have an influence who knows?
Think ill just carry around a Console cable in future!

  • Apple wired Dot1X - on Cisco 2950 switches

Hi, I have an issue with Apple desktop computers running 10.7 and 10.8 MacOS.
The problem is that we have only 2950 switches and we are very limited with what we can do on them, so we wanted basic DOT1X user authentication and VLAN placement. Those two are working great, except when user logs off, Mac stops sending DOT1X and port becomes unauthenticated. We alleviated that issue by using guest-vlan for failed dot1x authentications, but now we have a problem that once user logs in, there is no session change on 2950 and it doesn’t even try to authenticate user until we bounce the port.
Is there any way to fix this, on Cisco switch or Mac computer? One of the things that crossed my mind is bouncing port on Mac PC using some kind of logon script?
Has anyone else had this issue and was able to solve it?
    Thanks.

    Hello Align,
Cisco 2950 switch with 12.1(9) supports 802.1 x authentications. As you are saying that you already configured 802.1x authentication and its working fine. I think there is problem with your MAC OS configuration. Please follow the below link to configure 802.1x on Apple.
