Compiling updated kernel version
In another thread, I found out that a fix for my cardbus problems had been put in the kernel's git tree (changeset 02caa56e), which has been in mainline long enough to be in 2.6.35-rc6. The other thread's author mentioned manually updating the kernel source. I searched the wiki for information on how to do so, and mostly the information I found was just on how to compile a kernel with patches or a customized config.
After some more research, I concluded that the most likely course of action would be to copy the kernel26 directory from my ABS tree, change the version from '2.6.34' to '2.6.35-rc6', and just makepkg and pacman -U, then update my GRUB entry. However, the kernel26 PKGBUILD is quite complex. (And even if it wasn't, I would still like confirmation before doing something this important.) Does anyone have instructions on how to install this kernel (or at least a kernel with that changeset)?
With a bit of extra research (and if the fix is a patch that applies cleanly to 2.6.34.x code) you could also just rebuild that one module that you need (if it's one module). It is possible to build kernel modules separately and re-integrate them into the installed kernel's module tree after that.
If I'm not mistaken most modules have separate Makefiles themselves. This link has an example on how to do it.

Need to update kernel or build driver
I just installed Oracle VM on my Dell Vostro 1400 notebook and found that the wired network driver does not work.
According to the Dell site I need a updated version of the tg3 driver. I downloaded the sources but the Oracle Server VM CD does not seem to have the GCC compiler. I even downloaded a pre-compiled RH ES 4.0 version of the driver, for the same kernel number version, but it does not load.
Anyone has pointers on how to compile modules for the Oracle VM kernel? Or where to get a updated kernel version?
Regards,
LuisThere is no way to bail out if your kernel does not support network interface or video card. I had similar problems, though with x64 drivers, and I have tried everything I have managed to Google out, to avail.
Simply, Oracle VM has to come out with new kernel version in a short time, to announce a roadmap (could not find one so far), and firmly stick to it. -
Unable to load the OCFS due to kernel version mismatch
Hi,
I am using RedHat Linux ES 3.0 and installed the OCFS successfully but, unable to load the ocfs due to OCFS version conflict with the kernel version. following message displyed when i try to load ocfs.

SingaporeI have seen that error before, try using a different ip address for your machine, I'm not sure that the one you're using ( 1.1.1.2 ) is valid. Try ip an ip address using one of the following blocks:
10.x.x.x
192.168.x.x
load_ocfs will throw that error if it just doesn't like your configuration sometimes, or if you havn't generated an ocfs.conf.
Can you ping your other node ( 1.1.1.1 I assume )? -

With spl{,-utils} and zfs{,-utils}, upgrading leads to circular dependencies. This can be worked around by always building the packages in a chroot, but it is a bit more work than a normal module add on from the AUR.
But while demizer's repo is super duper convenient, he is human and doesn't always get to updating the packages as soon as the new kernel drops to [core]. So from time to time, you will have to patiently wait for the unofficial repo to be updated before you can update the linux package. That said, I am pretty sure he versions the dependency on the linux package, so I don't think that you can install the new linux package and then end up with a non-working filesystem. Rather, the attempt to upgrade the linux package will fail due to unmet dependencies.
Edit: As a disclaimer, it has been a while since I have played with zfs. So while I think this information is accurate, things may or may not have changed.

Kernel panic after trying to update to version 10.4.10 (Intel iMAC)
Hi all,
yesterday evening I wanted to install (via automatic software update) the new software update "Mac OS X 10.4.10 (Intel)" on my intel iMAC. Unfortunately the installation failed and I don't know why. Having not yet restarted I tried the installation again but again it failed.
Then I restarted my iMAC and since then I get every time now a kernel panic: 'Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"' ... Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.1 ...
I tried already several things like
- booting in safe mode (holding <shift>): not possible
- hardware check (holding 'D' with MAC OS X DVD #1 in drive): detailed hardware check ok
- reset of PRAM (holding command-option-p-r): didn't help
- starting in single-user-mode (holding command-s): get same error (panic)
- start in "open firmware mode"(holding command-option-o-f): not possible
I'm just a MAC user sind February of this year and not yet that experienced with kernel panics and how to overcome such a problem. I hope that someone more experienced can give me a hint or a solution description how to get my iMAC running again.
Thanks for any help,
Michael

QUERIES ON KERNEL VERSION UPDATES
can any one comment on this.
Uprade current kernel from RHAS 2.4.9-e.25enterprise to RHAS 2.4.9-e.49enterprise or 2.4.9-e.49enterprise
We need answers to the following questions:
1. What are the requirements/impact in Oracle RAC when RHEL AS 2.1 version 2.4.9-e.25enterprise (current) is upgraded to e.49?
2. How come a 3 node RAC cannot be composed of machines with different kernel
versions? (option is to have the 2 node with previous kernel and 1 node with
the new kernel for testing)
3. What are some known issues in kernel e.49?
4. Has there been installation of Oracle for e.49? Is Oracle tested for this
kernel version?
5. Is it safe for our current version of Oracle Apps (11.5.8) & Dbase (9.2.0.5)
& OCFS (1.0.11) to upgrade to the latest kernel which is kernel e.59?
6. If kernel is upgraded to e.49 or e.59 , is OCFS required to be upgraded also
from our current version of 1.0.11?
7. Are there other Oracle modules/components that will be affected if
enterprise kernel is upgraded from e.25. to e.49 or e.59?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
thanks,
venkat.Hi Ram,
Interestingly I found this link googling your name! Well, I hope you would had already found answers for your posting (They look outdated). I am not oracle geek but I guess
(In reply to your 7th question: Are there other Oracle modules/components that will be affected if enterprise kernel is upgraded from e.25. to e.49 or e.59?) I donât think a layered component (like oracle DB) will have any effect because of kernel upgrade [Again, I not a oracle geek so I may be wrong!]
I wish U good luck!
Your cousin!

Virtualbox question about what happsns "after" updating kernel. SOLVED
I had virtual box working (64bit) from puel/aur perfectly... then there was a kernel update and then when i went to bootup the virtual machine (the virtualbox gui worked fine), the VM screen went black and the entire computer/mouse froze solid, had to do a hard reboot..
was there or should I ask "is there" a command i should re-issue after the kernel updates? i'm thinking it has something to do with the virtualbox kernel module.. but i'm not sure..
i've read the info about virtualbox in the wiki... couldnt find much based on what i'm trying to ask in here..
any help/suggestions would be most appreciated..
thanks
Last edited by binskipy2u (2010-02-11 21:40:13)When you installed aur/virtualbox_bin, the following post-install message was displayed:
Run "vbox_build_module" as root every time your kernel is upgraded, to compile the module for the new kernel version.
You can confirm this by checking your pacman log and/or by reading /var/lib/pacman/local/virtualbox_bin-<version>/install. -

check these bugreports :

https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/42353
it seems that this bug related to i915 chip ( or intel graphic card ) is fixed in kernel 3.18rc3 mainline ( we can find this kernel package in AUR )
there is also another and complete different bug when we use a kernel 3.17 and even 3.18 ( it's a random bug ) but with a similar effect : boot can hang ( the boot process suddenly stops ) :
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189622
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189324
downgrading to kernel 3.16.x is the workaround
I assume my computer is affected by one of these bugs. While I can get to the point where my window manager is loaded, everything almost immediately hangs (but doesn't freeze). Terminal windows become non-responsive and Chromium will refuse input. It's very weird. This happens with both of the 3.17 kernel updates but not in any of the 3.16 releases (including 3.16.7).
This is on an AMD system (cpu/gpu w/ open source driver). Overall 3.17 seems rather buggy. -
What is the latest kernel version for OL6
Hi,
After a yum update, this is what I got:
2.6.32-300.39.1.el6uek.x86_64
I am using a SSD and it seems (based on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRIM) that
support for ATA TRIM was added in 2.6.33.
My question is what is the latest kernel version for OL6?
Thanks,

My question is what is the latest kernel version for OL6?2.6.39-300.17.2 (which is actually 3.0.17 under the hood) is available in the ol6_x86_64_UEK_latest channel. You will need to modify your ULN channel subscription or which channels are enabled from public-yum.oracle.com to install this kernel.

My Basic GPU features were working flawless with Photoshop version 13.0 After I update to version 13.1 for CC members all my GPU features stop working. Is there a form to set my Photosop version 13.1 in order to use my GPU features or there is a huge difference between versions that doesn't allow me to use the GPU features? Note: I Already update my graphics card driver

Hello ALL ,
i`m trying to update kernel on ecc 6.0 ehp 4 from 32 to 69 , and i`m working on windows server 2008 R2 with MSSQL server 2008 R2 , but it still take the old one " 32 version " , this is how I`ve update it after reading several notes :
1. download .sar file from marketplace .
2. stop the SAP services
3. decompress the file with sapcar .
4. copy the new files and replace it with these files in this path : D:\usr\sap\<SID>\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64
5. re-start the services.
6. open the ECC .
please i need your help guys .!!Hi,
Your procedure is correct. Nevertheless, don't forget to take a backup of the existing kernel before replacement.
To make things a bit better, I would like to suggest you to do the following
Goto Market place Software download --> Support packages and patches --> Kernel -->SAP KERNEL 64-BIT -->
Windows on x64 64bit -->Database independent --> SAPEXE.SAR Kernel Part I
And
Oracle -->SAPEXEDB.SAR Kernel Part II
DBSL Library,
R3trans, tp
Extract both of them to the kernel directory.
Please revert, if you run into issues.

Just by enabling the airport express card, the above error fills up my panic.log. Now I wonder what triggers the bug? Because I rebooted several times after the update. One thing I did see was the signal strength going less strong in the past days. Since today I cannot use it at all.panic(cpu 0 caller 0x000A8800): Uncorrectable machine check: pc = 000000003931288C
That is an uncorrectablehardwarecheck type panic and the Program Counter (address: 000000003931288C) on CPU matchs with the closest value "com.apple.iokit.AppleAirPort2(405.1)@0x392f4000" followed by a typical events in relation with an AirPort card logical failure:
AsyncSrc = 0000000000000000, CoreFIR = 0000000000000000
L2FIR = 0000000000000000, BusFir = 0000000000000000
There is a problem on async program in the computer and the connecting network node with Mach port (=socket)-- not synchronized by a common timing signal. An exception problem also occurs on the core/L2 cache and bus Fault Isolation Register (FIR) on the CPU.
More importantly, you will please see CVE-2006-6292 (under review) :
http://www.cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2006-6292
The Apple should be working with it. So here is my recommendation:
1. Data backup.
2. Erase and Install by Zero Out Data for Security Options...
( This is for your risk contorol.)
3. Install Mac OS X 10.4.x to update to 10.4.8.
4. Perform the major updates except the AirPort Extream firmware.
