Consolidate?/duplications?/concerns/questions

Had some HD problems. All files now accounted for but Itunes has many broken links for stuff not in library. I want to get everything into the library for future proper backup but do not want to create a ton of duplicate entries like when I add a folder. I end up with existing broken links and new good links. ie lots of duplicates. What exactely does "consolidate" do regarding broken links? I'm hoping re-adding/linking one at a time is not my only option. Help please. Thanks. Doug

Thanks Kieth for the quick response! I think a combination of the ethernet cable like you suggest plus a ethernet router at the end to feed all her tech in the front room (games console, internet TV etc) will work. cheers.
You need an Ethernet switch, not an Ethernet router. They start at about £6 for a 5 port one.
There are plenty available.

    I currently own a dual 1.42 G4 that I used for my video business. I had the computer for a while, so I am bored of it. I also work for a company, so i don't need a workstation anymore to clutter up the place. I am thinking an iMac with wireless accessories would clean the place up a bit. I would still want something i can run FCP and the rest of the studio on, and maybe something that can handle HDV well. I also have older versions of Adobe stuff to run, and would like to try running XP on it too. Should I go with the Power PC or this:
    2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    500GB Serial ATA Drive
    NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT 256MB SDRAM
    SuperDrive 8X (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    iWork '06 preinstalled
    Apple Wireless Keyboard & wireless Mighty Mouse + Mac OS X (US English)
    AppleCare Protection Plan for iMac - Auto-enroll
    24-inch widescreen LCD
    AirPort Extreme
    Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
    I really don't want all the wires anymore. I really dig the all-in-one feel.
    Comments or suggestions would be great.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    I just bought a new 20" iMac with the wireless keyboard and Mighty Mouse, and wished I had saved the extra 50 bucks. It's only a micro-fraction of a second, but I can sense a definite delay when typing into a word processing document and other tasks. Paying extra for "state-of-the-art" advances should come with no compromises. I'm now seriously thinking of shelling out another $150 to get a good old-fashioned hardwired keyboard and mouse.

  • STORAGE CONCERN / QUESTION

    I am trying to keep all of my media on my external HD. Ran into major frag probs.
    When I am surfing the net, and I click on a quicktime clip, such as a movie trailer, I notice that after it is done loading, I can sometimes click on the down arrow to the right of the clip and then save it as a source to my desktop. But because it takes such little time to save this, does this mean that it has already downloaded to my drive???? If so, doesn't that mean that I am putting a great deal of media on my drive and then deleting the data when I leave that page on the site? After time, could this become a fragmentation problem on my disk?
    If it is indeed downloading media to my drive, how can I have it download to my external Hard Drive instead?
    Thanx in advance for any insight you can give me.

    Hi
    Yes you can manage N number of plants and its storage locations in one warehouse
    In your example you think you may have like below given
    Plant A, it is having five storage locations 0001, 0002, 0003, 0004, 0005.
    And also you have Plant B; it is having three storage locations 0006, 0007, 0008
    You can configure at Path: SPRO>Assignment>Logistics Execution-->Assign Warehouse number to plant/storage location
    Here you can assign the Plant and storage locations to one warehouse, you may have ware house only one- 001

  • Virus concern/question

    I was cleaning off my desktop and noticed there was an icon on there with the name FCD58B00.  I tried to open it to find out what it was and could not open it by clicking on it or right clicking an telling it to open.  I tried to trash it, says cannot be deleted. I googled it, about 5 strange things come up but none that seem related that I can tell.  Anyone know what it is??  I ran Sophos scan on my computer but it found nothing.  Thanks.  It's bugging the heck out of me!

    It's unlikely a virus. You can try:
    Open Terminal in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following:
         sudo rm -Rf
    Leave a space after "-Rf" and select and drag the icon from the Desktop into the Terminal window. Press RETURN. You will be prompted for you admin password. You will not see your password echoed to the screen so type it in carefully. Press RETURN again.

  • Card pre-order concerns/questions

    I made a card in iPhoto.
    How do I tell if it will print one-sided or two-sided, flat or folded? If folded, which side will be the front?
    Is there any customer service available prior to ordering to make sure I don't ruin it being unfamiliar with the program?
    I did a "Year in review" Christmas card, but changed the layouts a little.
    I don't want to spend a bunch of $$$ and find out I put it together incorrectly.

  • T430s or T431s? and a key question concerning the T431s mSATA slot

    T431s or T430s?
    First let me apologize for my English, sorry if reading through this cause you any headache…
    I gave away my T410 (bad bad decision) the day after I got a i7 Yoga 13 with 256G SSD, and bought a M4 256G which I planned to put in the free mSATA slot, only to find out i can't live with that yoga keyboard and that huge off-center touchpad which gets in the way all the time a few days later... anyway, end up returned that yoga13 and is using my heavily abused limping T500 now with a replaced motherboard... I was looking to go back to thinkpad and buy a T430s right away but Lenovo announced T431s one day afterwards. now i dont know what to choose, although leaning towards T431s a little bit.
    things i'm looking for in my next laptop: first X1C is not an option for me, I can’t accept that screen with high dot pitch.
    l  weight: less than my T410, it doesnt have to be light as an Acer S7 or Samsung 9, just reasonably lighter, and as slim as possible.
    l  Processing power: doesn’t really matter, anything i5 or i7, M or U… all fine to me, I can run Lightroom, DPP and video processing applications on my desktop and I don’t play games. 8G or more RAM is needed.
    l  Storage: comes with 256GB SSD or user upgradeable to 256GB SSD is an absolute minimum requirement, but I really prefer any flexibility to configure a second drive, HDD or SSD, is a big plus, preferably HDD as the second drive.
    l  Screen: wouldn’t mind squeezing my eyes on a FHD screen, but I can only settle on a 900p, afterall I’m looking for a thinkpad, have to live with that screen, right?
    l  Tough… every one of my laptop gets dropped once or twice… many many times in the case of my old T410… so it needs to be tough…
    l  Not much else…
    So, T431s is lighter, slimmer, user replaceable 7mm SSD, mSATA available (a concerning question later), all good, and I like the new look. And I don’t care much about the indicators, lid lock, flipped logo or that new touchpad (I think I can manage, maybe…).
    So what do I have to sacrifice if I choose T431s? removable battery, ultrabay for optical drive and HDD, full voltage cpu, and possibly a couple hundred dollars… since we don’t know for sure how much optional parts will cost in customized build, and of course the risk of buying an unproven, newly designed product. Did I miss any other key point?
    If I didn’t miss many advantages that T430s have, I probably should go with T431s, it was all good until I found a video which shows how to disassembled a T431s (http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNTI5NzIxMzg4.html) and at about 4 mins in, it shows that the WWAN card is secured by a single retaining screw in the middle on the outer edge, unlike typical mSATA SSD which should be secured on the 2 corners of the board. Does this mean users can no longer install a mSATA SSD on T431s? if so, I can only have one 7mm SSD instead of having OS installed on a 256G mSATA, and have a 500G HDD to storage all the photos and videos, which I was intended to do, that maybe a deal breaker…
    I don’t really understand these hardware upgrades, can some one please tell me for sure whether the mSATA slot on T431s, as shown in the video, can be used to intall a regular mSATA SSD. If I can, I’ll probably still struggle to make the decision, if it can’t be used to install SSD, T430s it is.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Kai
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    thanks, yes, it's the new NGFF M.2, and the new form factor is a lot more complicated than the old mSATA slot, different dimensions for different storage size, and it maybe single side for WWAN, cashe drive, or double side for actual SSD perfermance...
    if i'm gonna get a T431s, i'll just buy the 320G 5400RPM low end drive, make a recovery media from Win8, and reset to factory setting after intall a 512GB 840 Pro, or the much cheaper M4...

  • Crossover Settings Confusion and Other Questions

    Equipment is as follows:
    - LG 55-inch 55LH90 LED TV
    - Denon AVR-590 A/V Receiver
    - Klipsch HD 500 5.1 Speakers
    - DirecTV High Def Satellite Receiver/DVR
    Long story very short is that I hit a button on the receiver remote about two weeks ago, unknowingly changing the existing audio settings to something along the lines of Matrix or Direct or Stereo.  I'm not one to fool with trying to customize settings on equip. like this... I usually just use the very basic functionality in controlling the equipment, as that's why I paid money 1.5 years ago to have everything professionally installed and calibrated.
    Upon accidentally hitting that remote control button, my audio went to pot, was very muffled, volume was minimal, sound was hissy, etc.  Sounded like I was listening to $15 speakers.
    Had no idea what had happened, didn't want to fool with trying to figure it out myself, contacted the receiver manufacturer to explain what had happened, they recommended immediately that I reset the receiver and thought the processor had locked up.  Did the reset and that of course unfortunately scrapped all of my custom calibration settings that the installers had configured a year and a half ago.  Sound still not improved.  Recommended that I send the receiver in for repair.  I held off for a few days on doing that and finally found the likely cause / solution on a message board, clicked the same button on the remote that I'd likely clicked by accident a few weeks earlier, and the sound was back to a more normal level.
    However, now I'm left without all of those custom calibrations via the Audyssey stuff that was erased, and I'm lost as can be as to how to get our system sounding like it did prior to all of this happening approx. 2 weeks ago.
    I'm lost on the crossover frequency settings and what they should be, what the dials on the rear of the subwoofer should be set at, what the crossover settings for the front / center / rear surround speakers should be, etc.
    I ran the Audyssey configuration using the supplied microphone that came with the receiver, but the resulting sound just still doesn't sound at all like it did originally after the installers did all of the setup / configuration back in Aug. 2009.
    Audyssey sets the crossover levels of my front L/R speakers to 120 HZ.  Audyssey sets the crossover level of my center channel to 110 Hz.  Audyssey sets the crossover levels of my rear L/R surround speakers to 120 Hz.  In what I seem to remember is the "bass management" area of the receiver settings, the crossover for the subwoofer is set at 80 Hz.  I believe another setting for the subwoofer is LFE+Main, too.
    With the above in mind, I have no idea at all (1) if the crossover values are appropriate for the various speakers and the subwoofer in the mix to distribute high/mid/low sounds appropriately between the speakers and the sub, (2) I have no idea what the "Level" knob on the rear of the subwoofer should be set to (values range from Min to Max), (3) I have no idea what the LowPass (Hz) knob on the rear of the subwoofer (ranges from 80 to 100) should be set to, and am just very confused / frustrated that with the accidental click of a button on the receiver remote 2 wks. ago and then Denon's tech support recommending the most drastic solution to this issue in resetting the receiver's processor and erasing all of the custom Audyssey settings.  I'm left with very sub-par sound as a result of all of this and can't seem to get the re-run Audyssey calibration routine to get my system back to sounding as phenomenal / balanced as it did for nearly 1.5 years straight after the initial setup / calibration of everything back in Aug. 2009 by the Best Buy professional installers.
    Any explanations of what the crossover settings for all of my speakers and subwoofer, knob settings on the rear of the subwoofer should be (in general, mind you, as I know all situations / environments / listening preferences are different), or any other helpful recommendations are GREATLY appreciated.  I'm very frustrated that Denon's tech support didn't first have me see if I had accidentally adjusted the sound properties via the remote via an accidental button click as opposed to taking my receiver back to square one.  I'm not a technical master of this stuff and have no idea what I'm doing wrong in trying to get everything back to sounding like the great system it used to sound like.
    Thanks in advance for any clearly-explained suggestions / recommendations on all of this.  My last resort is to contact Best Buy and pay them to come back out to re-calibrate everything themselves if I can't figure out where my calibration settings / adjustments are wrong.

    As I said in my first post in your other thread "you changed a setting the receiver and speakers are fine" <- not word for word but close to what I said LOL.  I knew from what you described thats what it had to be.  I do have a  concern about the phase issues and the distance readings but that could be placement of mic or if your speakers are facing straight out instead of being slightly faced inward.  May I ask where did you place the mic and was it on a tripod? I suggest either borrowing or buying a camcorder tripod for this.  I answered your questions below in blue.
     Also before ever doing a reset on any piece of equipment check the internet for some ideas as it could save you a lot of headaches.
    bmccollum wrote:
    Okay... stayed up late last night running through the Audyssey calibration routine.  Took several tries at the calibration routine, as it kept on coming back saying I had phase issues with various speakers (it bounced around between telling me the phase issues were with the Front Left, the Front Right, and the Center Channel).  I just kept on re-running Audyssey until it finally ceased telling me some of the speakers had phasing issues.
    Before I continue, I can't thank you enough again for reading through my posts and offering your suggestions... really do appreciate the assistance!
    While I'm thinking about it, I determined why the sound qualities / volume / etc. got so poor all of a sudden about 2-3 weeks ago.  I apparently accidentally hit one of the buttons on the receiver remote that changed the sound setup from whatever it had been set on forever to something like "Virtual" or "Direct" or "Stereo" or something like that, as opposed to Dolby Digital or whatever it had been set on forever.  I unfortunately went through the recommended Microprocessor Reset procedure on the receiver per their tech support's recommendation & that's why I lost all of the original Audyssey calibrated settings from August 2009, when all along, I could've just resolved the audio issues if I'd known that I'd accidentally clicked a button on the receiver remote, and had known I just needed to re-click another button to get the audio back to what it was normally set on. Here are the results that were set by the Denon AVR-590 via the Audyssey calibration.  Note:  Before beginning the Audyssey calibration process, I had the volume level knob on the rear of the sub itself turned halfway to the 12 o'clock position, and the LowPass knob on the rear of the sub turned all the way to the right (I believe 160 was the value).  I ultimately turned the volume knob on the rear of the sub to about the 10 o'clock position as I re-ran the Audyysey calibration multiple times, as the dB values being shown for the sub were coming back at - 12.0 db or close to that with the sub volume set at the 12 o'clock position.  The sub dB value got closer to the desired 0 dB value (as shown below) with the sub volume knob set to the 10 o'clock position.

    - S. Back                               None
    Okay, I've made the following minor adjustments thus far post-Audyssey calibration, as noted below:
    - SW Mode:                        LFE+Main  set to LFE only
    - LPF for LFE:                      120 Hz
    - Sub Volume Knob         Left sitting around the 10-11 o'clock position on rear of sub
    - LowPass Knob                                Left sitting at max setting to the right on rear of sub (I believe value is 160)
    - Front Left                         15.1 ft. is now what I've set the distance chk. at manually, as opposed to 0.1 ft
    - Front Right                       15.3 ft. is now what I've set the distance chk. at manually, as opposed to 1.3 ft.
    So there we are... ANY additional insight you may have on any of the values I've reported to you and whether or not they seem reasonable or completely out of whack is greatly appreciated.  My main concerns/questions are the various Crossover Freqency values set by Audyssey and whether or not they should likely be manually adjusted by me to better utilize/distribute the sound between the various speakers / sub, and secondly, why/how did Audyssey so incorrectly set the distance of my Front Left & Front Right speakers and was it likely wise of me to have set them to what they should be w/a new distance setting now of around 15 ft. for each of the Front Left and Front Right speakers?
    Here are my questions in a nutshell now.  I'm probably overanalyzing things now since having experienced this audio issue a few weeks ago and now I'm prob. hyper-sensitive to all aspects of the home theater sound I have at present.
    (1) Why do commercials seem to have expanded sound using all speakers whereas just you plain ol' TV programs seem to use fewer speakers and just mainly the center channel aside from some occasional applause and such coming out of the Front Left and Front Right speakers?
    The commercials are most likely broadcast in stereo instead of surround sound.  The receiver will switch from dolby digital to stereo and you won't even notice it except for the sound.
    (2) Why would I hit the "STD" button on the receiver remote to choose Dolby Digital vs. when
     to hit the "SIMU" button on the receiver remote to select "5 Channel Stereo" or other options via that "SIMU" button?5 Channel stereo is just that, Its 2 channel stereo being output through all 5 channels.  It is not 5 channel surround.  Standard give you Dolby digital, Prologic II etc.  Simulation gives you 5 channel stereo, Matrix, Hall and the other simulated surrounds. You want to hit the standard button.
    (3) On rear of subwoofer, I've set the LowPass knob all the way to the right, assuming that the "LFE +Main" and "LPF for LFE = 120Hz" settings override the LowPass knob on the rear of the sub, therefore having that knob turned all the way to the right to allow the settings for the sub in the receiver itself to control the LowPass / Crossover stuff.  Correct. As long as the sub accepts LFE signals the receiver will send anything lower than 120hz  directly to the sub. If not that is why you are setting it to the highest setting.
    (4) With Audyssey Crossover Frequencies set as shown above, are these reasonable/appropriate values to where all speakers are utilized properly for the equipment I have in distributing all low/mid/high frequencies appropriate between the various speakers / sub without audio drops and so forth?  The Crossover Frequency stuff is probably the most confusing part of all of this to me.
    Again, I can't thank you enough for your help and any additional recommendations you can make regarding my situation.

  • IPhoto library management question...again

    First of all, I am new to the forums and new to Macs in general, hence some of my concerns/questions are probably a result of my exclusive use of Windows.
    I have a relatively large number of photos (15,000) and have spent a lot of time over the years organizing them in a logical structure (Photos->Year->Month->Date->JPG files...) I have been reading a lot about iPhoto and I do understand the file structure within iPhoto, and I would be happy to begin adapting with my new photos. However, I am looking for an efficient way to transfer over all my hundreds of folders to the iPhoto library. I know it's been asked before, but thought maybe I am missing something. If I am way off then blame it on the extensive use of Windows over the last 15 years...I am mainly concerned with preserving the file structure/hierarchy. Do I need to just throw it from my OCD mind and just let iPhoto deal with it, while I practice with the export function?!?
    Thanks for any input you can provide.

    Each folder imported into iPhoto ends up as a single event. However, they will not be nested. You can go thru and add the year, month and date to the folder titles be for importing and you'll get an Event name that will be more indicative of the contents. I use "MM/DD/YY-Brief description".
    Then, as Larry suggested you can duplicate your folder hierarchy in iPhoto by creating a virtual folder to match the container folders (those that contain other folders but no photos) and drag those Events into it to create albums for those events.

  • Concerned about Aperture backups  vs. iPhoto backups

    Hi All,
    I've just installed Aperture 2.0 and after reading a lot of the posts here regarding the superior way that Aperture handles files compared to iPhoto, I wanted to start using Aperture for everything regarding organizing my photos.
    I have a couple of concerns/questions though...
    1) After importing my iPhoto library into the Aperture library as managed masters, I see that I can't actually access the originals/masters inside the Aperture library via Finder. When I right-click on the Aperture Library and choose Show Package Contents in Finder, I see the albums and events, but I do not see any of the actual photos.
    This concerns me regarding backups... even if I use the Vault feature in Aperture, I wouldn't have access to the actual masters outside of Aperture. If I want to migrate to a different photo cataloging/editing app later, can this be done?
    With iPhoto, I can access the originals when I need to AND they get backed up with Time Capsule or any other system backup.
    2) I've read a lot about Aperture's non-destructive editing being a strength... Isn't this the case with iPhoto as well? In Finder, the iPhoto library contains a folder called "Originals" and one called "Modified"... the Original folder contains the masters and the Modified folder contains copies of the masters to which I've applied edits. Wouldn't this be considered non-destructive as well?
    3) Given these two above points, I'm considering starting over and importing my iPhoto library in Aperture as referenced files. My two concerns here are this:
    a) What are the draw backs, if any, of doing this? Won't I get the same benefits using Aperture with referenced files?
    b) If I add new photos to iPhoto after I've imported the library into Aperture as referenced files, I'm assuming they won't show up in Aperture, right? I guess the alternative is to just open up the iPhoto library in Aperture and not import anything... anything I'd be missing here with regards to Aperture's superiority over iPhoto?
    Thanks so much for any answers and advice. I appreciate it.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    1) After importing my iPhoto library into the Aperture library as managed masters, I see that I can't actually access the originals/masters inside the Aperture library via Finder. When I right-click on the Aperture Library and choose Show Package Contents in Finder, I see the albums and events, but I do not see any of the actual photos.
    a: The Library structure of Aperture is quite different. Yes the files are there, but they are inside further packages. Each approject is in itself a further package file, and it contains - among other things - the actual files.
    Now this opens several lines of possibilities. 1: I post a lot on the iPhoto forum and I always advise users to use a Managed Library. iPhoto’s abilities with Referenced Libraries are poor. This is not the case with Aperture. It has very strong abilities with Referenced Libraries, so much so that many folks recommend them as default.
    That said, if you prefer the managed library, then backing up the Library Package does exactly that. Just like iPhoto, you get everything.
    If you want to migrate to a different application, well, frankly the right way to do that is to export the images - same as iPhoto. But that said, if you get inside the Library and then the projects, there are your Original files. Just a single extra layer away.
    Yes and no... Aperture works very differently from iPhoto. As you point out, in iPhoto edits are carried out on a copy of the Original and saved as the Modified version. However, this modified version is a generation down - and therefore more compressed - than the Original. That said, with the Non Destructive feature of iPhoto 08 and later, you’re never more than one generation away from the Original +if you edit in iPhoto only.
    Aperture works very differently. There is no Modified Version. When you edit an Original in Aperture your decisions are recorded in the Database and applied to the pic live as you view it. The only time a new file is produced is when you go to use it - email it, print it, whatever...
    Given these two above points, I'm considering starting over and importing my iPhoto library in Aperture as referenced files. My two concerns here are this:
    a) What are the draw backs, if any, of doing this? Won't I get the same benefits using Aperture with referenced files?
    Do you mean “Won’t I get the same benefits using iPhoto with Referenced Files? IF so, the answer is no. And if you ever have to re-attach the masters to a iPhoto Library, then you can set aside the weekend to do a lot of clicking.
    There are no drawbacks with using a Referenced Library in Aperture. If the numbers of photos you process are very large there are distinct advantages to doing so - masters stored on multiple disks for instance.
    b) If I add new photos to iPhoto after I've imported the library into Aperture as referenced files, I'm assuming they won't show up in Aperture, right? I guess the alternative is to just open up the iPhoto library in Aperture and not import anything... anything I'd be missing here with regards to Aperture's superiority over iPhoto?
    Why would you import to iPhoto is you’re using Aperture? A much better workflow would be to import to Aperture and then share the Aperture Previews with iPhoto. But no, the relationship between Aperture and iPhoto is not dynamic. They don’t read each other’s Libraries as they change.
    Aperture’s superiority over iPhoto is down to much better file management controls, much better processing tools with more more fine control over them, much better everything to do with processing photos.
    iPhoto has better slideshows and it has Calendars.

  • Option to change a Subject Line in a Forum question

    Hello,
    In Forums, many times I see that people create duplicate questions because after posting a question and getting some responses, they realize that the Subject Line is not descriptive enough .
    e.g
    /thread/1520926 [original link is broken]
    /thread/1519271 [original link is broken]
    I personally feel that if we provide an option to a question's owner to change the subject line at any point of time( even after many replies)  if needed, it could avoid some duplications in questions.
    (Let me know if its already there and I dint know about this feature
    Regards,
    Pooja Pandey

    Hi Pooja,
    You can change the title and the post itself, but you need to realize the mistake.
    If I remember correctly, you have 15 minutes time for this.
    There were some strategists in the past who posted "place holders" or went back and edited their posts once someone had provided a better solution. This is not main the intention of the forums and sharing you knowledge at the time of posting.
    My recommendation is to do a quick check on the OP before answering by checking their recent posts via the user profile, and if you find the question interesting but are not sure about aspects of it, then don't rush in but take your time to work it out.
    A respectfull OP should appreciate this, and the quality of the discussion around the solution.
    Personally, I have also learnt very valuable skills from SDN when someone stepped in to say "Sorry Julius, but that is a legacy approach and you can now use XYZ..." or "That is bad advise, because you have not considered ABC.." etc.
    Such discussions are worth gold to everyone, and there is nothing wrong with making "innocent" mistakes.
    My 2 cents of thinking before posting,
    Julius

  • Freezing and itunes not found questions

    I have two concerns/questions
    1. why does my itunes application never work. I hit itunes try to see the store or when I'm using Panda it says itunes cannot be opened or some such message
    2. my phone semi froze today (again but different this time).
    I could call my phone and it would vibrate - but not ring and I could not answer it.
    I couldn't shut it down to reopen. It was open to the phone page - couldn't get it back to the home/icon page.
    I did do an update and that restored it but my concern is what can I do when I'm not near my computer (traveling etc). any ideas would be greatly appreciate.

    I meant Shazam and I think the other person you referred to meant Pandora. Shazam is an application where you can put your phone up to a radio playing a song and it will identify it for you and then take you to itunes to purchase the song if you want.

  • Question before installing

    I currently am running 10.4.11, and I just bought Leopard today.
    My concern/question is concerning CS2, and what will happen once I install Leopard. I was given CS2 by a teacher of mine on my laptop so I could do layout for my school newspaper, but I am no longer involved in that class, so I don't have the installation disks anymore.
    Will I have to re-enter the registration numbers? Is there any way that I can keep CS2 and still install Leopard?
    Thank you for your advice in advance.

    I can't address the C2 issue since I don't use those items. However, since you're no longer associated with that work, bite the bullet and buy the latest Adobe things if you really need them.
    However, before you proceed, get a bootable, external HD (preferably FireWire), and make a bootable backup/clone before upgrading and ensure that it's bootable and works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. See these for details:

  • 15454 Multishelf Networking Question

    I have a concern with the way a vendor setup the network for our two 15454's.  Unfortunately this vendor is acting like a car dealer and doesn't want to answer/respond to our questions about the setup.  Below is my concern/question that I sent to our vendor to no avail and hoping someone on here can help out.  I have also attached a simple diagram of the physical setup:
    /* Style Definitions */
    table.MsoNormalTable
    {mso-style-name:"Table Normal";
    mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;
    mso-tstyle-colband-size:0;
    mso-style-noshow:yes;
    mso-style-priority:99;
    mso-style-qformat:yes;
    mso-style-parent:"";
    mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;
    mso-para-margin:0in;
    mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt;
    mso-pagination:widow-orphan;
    font-size:11.0pt;
    font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";
    mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri;
    mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin;
    mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";
    mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast;
    mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri;
    mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;}
    I have put a diagram together of the current physical setup and it shows the Travis ONS is going from its Slot 11 to Switch 2 Port 0/2 (VLAN2) and Slot 7 is going to Switch 1 port 0/2 (VLAN2).  Both ports which are on VLAN 2.  Then you have the Main ONS Slot 7 going to Switch 1 port 0/1(VLAN1) and Slot 11 going to Switch 2 port 0/1(VLAN1) which is a trunking port with no native VLAN set so it defaults to VLAN1.  Not sure why this port is setup to trunk unless it was meant to be used to connect to our network and the Slot 11 and 7 of the Main ONS was supposed to plug into another port.
    So right now I see that the Main ONS is only talking on VLAN 1 and the Travis ONS is only talking on VLAN 2.  Is this how it should be setup?  Also, does there have to be multiple VLANS as of now I don't see why we would need to have two VLANs setup.  We normally use VLAN 2 for management purposes and would like to continue to do that.  And we have heard talk of a heartbeat between the two ONS.  What VLAN/Port is the heartbeat taking place on if there is actually one occurring?
    Thanks in advance

    Jeremy,
    Depending on what version of software you are running and if you are only using the 15454 M12 chassis (17 slot) and not the M2 or M6 Chassis, you can select which VLANs to use when you configure the MSTP shelf for mult-shelf.
    See the following 9.2 MSTP Documentation:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/optical/15000r9_2/dwdm/procedure/guide/454d92_turnupnode.html#wp398430
    Step 1 Complete the "DLP-G46 Log into CTC" task on page 3-30 at the node that you want to configure as a multishelf node.
    Step 2 If you want to set up the login node as the node controller, complete the following steps. If not, continue with Step 3.
    a. In node view (single-node mode) or multishelf view (multishelf mode), click the Provisioning > General > Multishelf Config tabs.
    b. Click Enable as Node Controller.
    c. From the LAN Config drop-down list, complete one of the following:
    •Choose Ethernet Switch if MS-ISC-100T cards or the Catalyst 2950 or the Catalyst 3560 switches are already installed and configured. Choose the public VLAN ID and private VLAN ID for the ONS 15454 multishelf node. In case of an ONS 15454 M6, the public VLAN ID and private VLAN ID are static (1 and 2 respectively).
    Note Public VLAN ID is used by the node controller to communicate with the external network. Private VLAN ID is used by the node controller to communicate with the subtending shelves.
    The default is VLAN IDs 1 & 2 and it is assumed that you are using dedicated switches for the Multi-shelf configuration.  If you are using the switches for other purposes, then it is assumed that you are not using VLANs 1 or 2.
    If you are not using the M2 or M6 chassis, you should be able to go back and reprovision your multi-shelf configuration in CTC to use different VLANs, and of course make the corresponding changes on your switches as well.

  • Migration to OX Server from Linux HA Cluster

    Hello. I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this topic, but I am looking for some friendly opinions on a possible solution to my organization's infrastructure. Basically I am looking to consolidate resources and reduce energy usage.
    I currently operate our entire organization with 10 servers. They are broken down like this:
    2-CentOS-5: Running in Active/Passive HA. Hosts Apache 2.0 and MySQL 5. Data and config files replicated by DRBD.
    2-CentOS-5: Running in Active/Passive HA with 6-500gb RAID 5 SATA Drives. These systems are set up to host NFS Shares. Data and config files replicated by DRBD. MySQL is also installed as a Replicating Slave from the previous mentioned servers.
    2-CentOS-5: Running in Active/Passive HA for an Asterisk VOIP Phone System. Config files replicated by DRBD. All voice recordings are sent via a NFS mount to the previous mentioned NFS Servers. All MySQL entries are made to the Main MySQL Server.
    1-CentOS-5: Mail Filter
    1-Redhat-4: Mail/LDAP/Samba Domain Controller
    1-Windows 2003: Enterprise Application Server
    1-Windows 2003: Terminal Services
    None of these servers are tasked out by any means. My server rack is full, the electric required to run them and the AC to keep them cool is high.
    So, I was thinking about purchasing 2 Mac XServe Servers. I wanted to do the following. Can anyone validate the configuration? Or do I not understand the capabilities of the OS X Server?
    Both XServes would be built like this: Dual 2.8 quad core, 16GB RAM with 3x1TB SATA Discs in RAID 5.
    My goal is to utilize OS X Server’s HA across the two servers to handle:
    Web Services (Apache 2)
    MySQL 5 (Master Node)
    Email Server
    Calendaring Server
    Samba Domain Controller (For Windows Clients)
    File Storage
    Will HA work for the services I mentioned using OS X Server easily?
    Then, on the first XServe (XS1) I would install 2 virtual machines (No HA – just snap shots taken for backup):
    VMA – CentOS5 – MySQL (Slave Node)
    VMB – Windows 2003 – Enterprise Apps
    Then, on the second XServe (XS2) I would install 2 virtual machines (No HA – just snap shots taken for backup):
    VMC – Windows 2003 – Terminal Services
    VMD – Windows 2003 – More Enterprise Apps
    My concern/question is really mostly about the “File Storage” I referenced. As I mentioned above I currently have a HA NAS Server that each of my other linux servers mount via NFS. Is this something that Xsan 2 could do between the two XServe servers? If so, does that mean that I could store the virtual machine images on the NAS created by Xsan 2? And, if so, do I NEED to have a fiber switch? Or could I simply utilize fiber directly between the two servers?
    Am I crazy for wanting to do this? Am I missing something? I am thinking I must be, that is why I am posting!
    Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the Asterisk VOIP System will remain on its current hardware.

    as far as i know, you'd need xsan nodes for all machines involved and san storage shared among all nodes. ideally, you'd need primary and secondary xsan metadata controllers just to deal with san metadata, and they should not be your od master or replica.
    you could probably skimp on hardware and double up services on each machine, but it probably wouldn't save you much in the short term, at least.
    how about moving to more power efficient processors for your current setup? your network as it is now sounds exactly like what some of my clients would love to have, but it would take a lot of cash to build with apple hardware/software.

  • How does Photostream handle duplicate file names?

    My sister has an iPhone and an iPad, and takes photos with both. Her husband has an iPhone, and also takes photos. They have a PC. Photostream is enabled on all of these devices.
    Now, since all three devices use a simple sequential file numbering system (IMG_XXXX), they will produce duplicate file names.
    This, of course, becomes an issue when you consolidate the photos taken by multiple iOS devices in one folder as is done by Photostream on PC.
    Which brings me to my question: How does Photostream (on PC) handle duplicate file names? Does it simply overwrite, keeping the one with the latest date, or what? Does it inform the user in any way?
    Oddly, I have seen little discussion on this. It really seems like Photostream is pointless

    FOLLOWUP. Below, is a clearer explanation of my concern/question.
    My sister has an iPhone and an iPad, and takes photos with both. Her husband has an iPhone, and also takes photos. Photostream is enabled on three devices. They have a PC. iCloud Control Panel for Windows is installed, and Photostream is enabled.
    Now, since iOS devices use a simple sequential file numbering system (IMG_XXXX.JPG), when you consolidate these images into one folder as is done by Photostream on PC, you will sooner or later encounter two (or more) different photos that have the same file name. Different photos with the same file names can/will happen when you consolidate images taken with different iOS devices into the same folder.
    Which brings me to my question:
    How does Photostream (on PC) handle duplicate file names that are not duplicate images?
    Q: Does it simply overwrite, perhaps keeping the one with the latest date taken? In this case Photostream will not contain all of the photos it should.
    Q: Or, does it do something to create a unique filename when it encounters a duplicate file name? For example: IMG_0001, IMG_0001(1), IMG_0001(2)
    Oddly, I have seen no discussion on this. I hope someone can help me understand how Photostream handles this so we can decide how best to use Photostream, or if it is a feature we want to disable.
    Thank you,
    Lilla
