Converting Blend Mode to Color

Is there any way to convert an object using a blend mode to the equivalent a color with no blend mode?
For example:
Currently, I just adjust the color myself, but It seems like there should be a way to automate this.
Thanks!

Is there a way to kill all the blend modes in an illustration and convert them to just plane old fill colors? I'm exporting these things to HTML5 where blend modes aren't supported.

Object >> Flatten Tranparency
Slide to all vectors
Check Preserve Alpha Transparency
If you need to get rid of tints, you can do a second time on individual elements, with Preserve Alpha unchecked.

• Color Dodge Blend mode issue in CS4

Alright I'm running CS4 and I'm having an issue using the color dodge blend mode for my brushes. What im trying to do is to create a light effect which I've done this before and I've also run into this problem before and I've solved it but I just cant remember how. I have a dark gradient on my background and i created a new blank layer for my brush, i set the brush layer blend mode to Color Dodge and use a white brush so it will pick up on the gradient. The issue I'm having is it's just painting over the gradient as if nothing is there and it only starts picking up on the background on a ring that I uncover when I go over it with a brush I'll try and provide an image. the white is suppose to turn bright red when it goes over the colored part of the gradient but it only changes its color near this ring on the gradient that I didn't add in. . . it's a weird explanation and I'm sorry cant explain it better but I hope someone knows or can figure out what I'm talking about or experiencing. your help is appreciated

I tried what you said and overlay wont work because it's too dark. I don't know if it was something wrong with my brushes or something else.I opened an old PSD that i had done this same thing with and the color dodge was working on that but whenever i created a new one it would act strange like the image above. then i tried again later and for some reason it started to work. The only thing i did differently was reset my brushes and i created a group and changed the group's blend mode to Color Dodge then put in a blank layer inside the group folder with a normal blend mode and it worked for some reason. I still don't know exactly what i did but oh well it's working now. Thanks for your help. This is what i was trying to do so now you can see how it wasn't working above.

• Color blend mode / Color brush mode doesn't work

Hello,
I have CS3, working on Windows 7/64. For some reason, I cannot get color modes to work. I would like to be able to sample a color from one area, and use a brush set on "color" instead of "normal" to paint. Instead, all it does is darken and make gray whatever color it is trying to brush over. If I try to leave the brush on "normal" but the layer blend mode to "color," nothing at all happens. When I try changing the layer blend mode to anything else, (screen/normal/difference/etc), it works as it is supposed to. Any ideas how I could fix this? Thank you so much in advance!!

Hello!
I have the same question, and what are the colors you are trying to paint on and with?
Did you try to reset the brush tool by right-clicking its leftmost icon in the Option bar?

• CS5: Color Blending Mode

Okay well i have a problem
Just bought Photoshop CS5 - & i'm designing my first image..... Below is an image of the sort of effect i'm trying to get.
Changing colours of an object without having to paint them etc etc.
The Image above says that We should Get the stock image > desaturate it > then Create A New Layer > Blending Options: Color
Well the problem i am having is the fact here is my image
As you can see - it is smoke particles, well what i am trying to do is - Colour those particles similar to the above image.
To do this - id normally make a new layer above that & set the blending mode to Color - however it doesnt seem to work.
I get a blob of colour when i try to colour the individual smoke particles;
Is there anyway someone can help me & point me in the right direction as to what i'm doing wrong - i dont want a blob of colour like that - i only want to colour the Smoke particles themself to achieve a rainbow effect. Here is my layer palette to help.

Now's your chance to learn.
Layer - Add Layer Mask.
Go into the Channels panel, find the mask, and paste the smoke into it, then Image - Adjust - Invert.

• Problems with blending modes

Hi,
I have a layer with a solid color (212º,93,78) on top of which I have another layer with a solid color (205º,100,74). Call this second layer the blend layer. I then choose for it a blending mode of Color, and the resulting color in the top layer is (205º,100, 74). If instead I choose the luminosity blending mode, the resulting color in the top layer is (212º,93,78).
---all these are HSB coordinates.
According to the documentation. color and luminosity blending modes should behave differently:
Color
Creates a result color with the luminance of the base color and the hue and saturation of the blend color. This preserves the gray levels in the image and is useful for coloring monochrome images and for tinting color images.
------ the luminance of the base color is 78 (at least the brightness anyway - I know of no method to get the luminance)
Luminosity
Creates a result color with the hue and saturation of the base color and the luminance of the blend color. This mode creates the inverse effect of Color mode.
------- in this case everything is equal, which seems to me is not right.

Generally speaking, Photoshop works fine with Windows 8 but the display drivers aren't all up to the task yet, and Photoshop uses the GPU for a lot of stuff.
What video card do you have?
You might find you can go into Edit - Preferences - Performance in Photoshop and disable the usage of GPU (the setting is called [ ] Use Graphics Processor in Photoshop CS6, and [ ] Enable OpenGL Drawing in earlier versions). It's also possible that you might find things to work better if you leve the GPU enabled but change the advanced mode for it to a lower setting, such as Basic.
In a general answer to your question, yes, I imagine there will be updates through Windows Update and from Adobe that will correct the problems. You may be able to accelerate the fix by visiting the web site of the maker of your video card and downloading their recent driver release (though I caution against this with ATI drivers right now - their latest aren't really too good).

• Blending modes: PSE vs PS

A subject I don't know well is blending modes. I saw an interesting book about this, but it was written about Photo Shop. Is there a difference in the blending modes between PSE10 and PS? TIA

If you ever get far enough into blend modes that you do want subtract and divide blend modes in photoshop elements:
divide:
Invert the layer (Crtl+I) (mac Cmd+I) or (Filter>Adjustments>Invert) and then change the layer blend mode to Color Dodge.
subtract:
change the blend mode of the layer to linear burn and then invert the layer (Crtl+I) (mac Cmd+I) or (Filter>Adjustments>Invert)

• Clip blend mode doesn't apply to transitions?

I'm trying out the Final Cut X demo, wondering if I want to upgrade from Final Cut Pro 5, whch currently won't load on my computer anymore. Anyway, I've run into a problem that is really strange...if I want to fade in an overlay clip that has a different blend mode, like Color Burn, Linear Light, etc., the transition (I've tried Cross Dissolve and Circle) doesn't use the other blend mode. The transition will do "normal" blending only, and then the instant the transition is complete, the other blending mode kicks in. Then as soon as a transition begins at the end of the clip, the blend mode goes back to "Normal." I can't seem to find a way to apply the other blend mode to the transition. Adding effects and making other clip settings like cropping, etc. seem to work, but the transistion refuses to use my blending setting. Is there another trick I'm overlooking?
Thanks!
Shayne

More than that the blend mode applied to the connected clip, which usually effects and intercats with the clip below, now doesn't blend with it at all.
There is a weird workaround you can set up for this. Right-clcik and use open in timeline on the connected clip. Put the clip you want to blend with inside that clip's timeline. Stack them the way you want, and then step back into the project. the clip and the blended clip will be together and you can apply a transition at the beginning. This might work for what you want to do, but I can't be sure.

• Can I sample a layer's "true" color despite its opacity and blend mode?

I'm doing some painting with a lot of layers set to different blend modes. I find that every time I want to paint on one of these layers, I have to go to that layer, set the opacity back to 100, change the blend mode back to "normal" sample the color, then change everything back and continue painting. I realize I can save a swatch for the color, but it can get confusing when you're using subtle color differences on multiple layers. It seems like there should be a modifier key to the tool that samples the layers "true" color discarding opacity and blend mode. Does this exist? Thanks!

Perfect! This is exactly what I'm looking for chris....I don't suppose there's any way to toggle the tool's "current layer/all layers" functionality on the fly so i don't have to go to the tool and select which mode I"m in each time is there? I usually access this tool by just hitting "option" while using a brush. Would be cool if i could set "Option + shift" to use the eyedropper in "current layer" mode. Thanks for the speedy reply!

• Photoshop 6 and the change in Color Dodge/Burn blend modes

Photoshop 6 introduced a few changes in blending modes. Here´s a tip on how to save those older PSD´s, and continue with the Color Dodge/Burn behaviour you are used to:
Courtesy of Mark Hamburg, verified and posted by Chad Baker:
To create a new Color Dodge/Burn layer that will work like the old ones used to, simply Option (Alt) click the New Layer icon and select Color Dodge/Burn as your mode, then check the box to fill your new layer with a neutral color (black for Color Dodge and Difference, white for Color Burn).
To fix an existing Color Dodge/Burn layer (from one of your 5.5 files for example) that has 100% layer opacity, simply bring up the fill dialog with that layer selected, then fill the layer in 'Behind' mode with black.
To fix an existing Color Dodge/Burn layer that has an opacity of other than 100% it's a little trickier, but not much. The process is the same as above, but you must perform a quick trick first. Select the layer, then go to Layer>Layer Style>Blending Options. What you need to do is change the Advanced blending opacity to whatever your General blending opacity is, then move the general opacity up to 100%. Now all you have to do is what you did before, fill the layer in 'Behind' mode with black.

• Luminosity/Color blend modes - what do they really do?

I know what the documentation says that they do, but it doesn't appear to be the truth. For example, if I take my image and overlay it with a 50% gray layer set to Luminosity mode, I would expect to see the hue and saturation of my image, with the luminosity of every pixel set to 50%, but that isn't what actually happens.
Have I misunderstood what these modes are supposed to do? Can anyone enlighten me?
Thanks in advance,
Aaron

Aaron,
The weighting factors for R G and B were determined long ago via subjective responses in tests on thousands of people. there have since been other recommended weights. No set of weights is valid over the whole range of color values. In an imperfect world you compromise. Nowhere is it explicitly stated, but Photoshop has stuck with the older weights. You can verify that for yourself using the Info palette. Other applications may use other luminosity definitions. Also in Photoshop, Brightness is taken to be the highest of the R G and B color values. I think you were equating brightness and luminosity. They are decidedly different parameters. Nor is Luminosity the same as the L parameter in LAB (most often called "Lightness" but often "Luminance"). You won't find that LAB Lightness is preserved by the Luminosity blend and certainly not Brightness. Using the Info palette, you can also see that the Luminosity blend mode retains the hue and saturation of the base while adopting the luminosity of the blend color.

• Blending mode : color . How it works?

Is there one simple exercise for to know how it works blending mode : color?
Please.
Thanks

Quote from the Help:
Color
Creates a result color with the luminance of the base color and the hue and saturation of the blend color. This preserves the gray levels in the image and is useful for coloring monochrome images and for tinting color images.

• Blending modes DPS

in DPS, Is it possible (and how) to use blending modes in a scrolling box?

After you have converted your colored object to MSO go to every state and apply the blending mode that you seek in my case above it was ( exclusive ).
in the slideshow overlay turn off ( cross fade ).
i hope this helped

• Merging down Screen blending mode

Here is a problem I face professionally all the time. I have seen it solved only once and never found out how it was done. Maybe some one can shed some light on this for me. I will use a hypothectical file for an example.
I have a photo from a photo shoot of a plane with no landing lights on. That is masked out and is layer 01.
Then I place a photo of a night sky in the background.
I adjust the color of the plane to look like it is taken at night. Looks perfect!
Then I take a separate photo taken directly into a shining light with all the wonderful natural golden auras and flares. I place the photo of the light over where the plane would have landing lights and put the photo of the light on SCREEN MODE.
Adjust curves and PRESTO it looks beautiful.
Now here is the problem! Say I want this to be moveable by my clients down the line. I want only 2 layers. The sky background and the plane with lights. I apply all my color to the plane and apply the mask. But HOW do i apply the screen layer to the plane so it is just 1 layer and can move all over the background and still be see thru and get all the wonderful look the blending modes give you? So no matter where you move the layer it interacts correctly with the background layer.
I can not flatten every thing, nor can i copy merge the background on to a separate layer and clip it too the lights. They must be applyed to the plane layer and still look just like they do in SCREEN MODE.
I know this is very advanced. But I work on advanced stuff.
Thanks.

>We only deliver files that are idiot proof.

That sounds like a flattened file to me....

Can't the client use the eraser tool, convert color space, assign profile, paint with brush? If you lock the layer's transparency and pixels (leaving only move as an option), and then drop them in a group, you've made it pretty hard to f-up. If you want to be extra paranoid, embed a set of layer groups and lock those too. Then they've got two hoops to jump through. Or another iteration. Now three!

Blending modes are calculations based on two layers' pixel values. Think about what you're asking--it seems absolutely impossible to me. You can approximate it many ways. Set the lights to screen over black and then select their luminosity, then copy/paste. Or run the peel off black filter and set them up that way. But they'll blend as normal then.

• Why no lighten/darken blending modes in Lab?

With PS CS, I have noticed in Lab color space the lighten and darken blending modes for layers are disable. Also, if an RGB picture uses them, they are converted to normal blending mode upon conversion to Lab. Any idea why this limitation? And any way to circumvent it?

This is true also for the Color Dodge, Color Burn, Difference, and Exclusion blend modes in CS3. (I don't remember if all of these modes exist in CS.) The only way to circumvent the mode conversion when switching from RGB to LAB seems to be flattening beforehand---not likely to be a happy solution for you.
