Counter stops sampling during several-minute acquisitions

Hello All,
I am working on rewriting a data-acquisition program for DAQmx.  The code was originally written for traditional DAQ, but ceased working when we upgraded to LabView 8.5 and the corresponding version of DAQmx.  The program is designed to sample  many accelerometers using one AI Voltage task, and also sample a motor tach sensor and record all this data.  The program works fine right now except sometimes after 2 or 3 minutes of recording, the counter suddenly stops gathering data for no apparent reason.  It's not a timebase overflow error, because I've already dealt with that problem seperately.  I'm hoping someone has encountered similar behavior before and can help me out, because i'm not sure how to proceed with troubleshooting.
The counter task is a period measurement which runs continuously and takes all the samples from the buffer each time.  This number varies with motor speed (more samples are taken per loop) and also seems to vary 10 or 20% independent of motor speed (luckily this doesnt affect or post processing programs).  Interestingly, i recorded the number of samples taken at one of these "counter stopping events" and found the last few sample numbers were:  947, 981, 964, 2(?!), 0, 0, 0...   I'm hoping the presence of that bizzare 2 helps someone out.
Here is a picture of the relevant section of this code:
The sub-vi "Idler MX Config" contains the configuration for the voltage task, and the sub-vi "Idler MX Read" contains the voltage read block, these work fine having been tested over many programs.  It's a work in progress so I apologise for the mess.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.  The program does work, but this intermittant problem is hampering its usefulness at the moment.

Thanks for the reply Kevin, you've given me several new things to think about.
I've done a lot of counter apps and I don't believe you've stumbled on a known issue with the board or driver.
- Perhaps you have a noisy tach signal causing an
error in your counter task?  This could explain *part* of your
observations.  The other part, well, I would start by suspecting your
app code.
> I've checked the tach signal with an oscilloscope, and found it to perform well, additionally the old version of the code never had any problems with it
- The 10-20% timing variability didn't immediately
raise any alarms, but the fact that it's independent of motor speed
*does* trigger some suspicions.  It suggests that spinning your motor
at different speeds causes your software timing variability to change
inversely.  Double the speed and a 10% variation in # of period samples
represents only *half* as much time as the 10% variation meant at the
original speed.  Something about that relationship doesn't sit right
with me.  Dunno what exactly to point to, but it's, well, weird.
> Our motor has a little bit of speed variation (I think <1%) which explans some of it.  I don't believe the software timing is changing much (is there a way to measure this?).  The variability in number of samples with respect to motor speed makes sense to me given the number of pulses passing duing a sampling interval.  at 50 RPM it's 16 or 17 at 3000 RPM it's around 1000.
- My guess for why you get an instance of 2 samples
before getting stuck at 0 is that for some reason, the *prior*
iteration finished much faster than normal.  Perhaps this is because an
error was asserted causing a block of time-consuming code to be
skipped?  Whatever the cause, it's telling you that you looped back
around so fast that the task didn't have time to buffer the normal ~900
samples, but only had time for 2.  So I agree, the "2" should be a
bigger clue than the sequence of 0's.
>  This is interesting too, is there an easy way to measure the time each loop iteration takes and store it in an array?
- comment: is that a 10000 second timeout to your counter task?  Is that on purpose?  Really?
>  Originally I thought the timeout might be to blame for the counter stopping after awhile, so I put some arbitrarily huge number in there to rule it out.  Can this have downsides?
- just curious -- I notice you don't specify a buffer
size for the counter task.  Try explicitly setting that to a fairly
large size (or at least query the size with a property node).  I don't
know how well DAQmx guesses at a default buffer size for an "Implicit
Timing" period measurement task.  (It generally does well for
explicitly timed tasks.)>  This is a good suggestion, I'll try some things along this avenue and get back to you.
- what does the rest of the loop code do?
> To the right hand side of what I posted, there's only some file writing code and the end of the loop.  I neglected to mention it, and probably should have, but there's a second while loop in this program running concurrently.  It sends an analog out voltage via out 6704 card every 50ms to control motor speed.  It's completely independent of the rest of the code but might be interfering?

Satellite L300D-135 (PSLC8E-02P013EN) model laptop, on cold boot the keyboard is fine. As things warm up the R and Y keys stop responding as do the 7890 keys. Might be heat related.
The keyboard has been replaced but both old and new do the same thing, so it's more like a controller problem. Have flashed BIOS to latest as saw mention of keyboard issues in one of the BIOS releases. End user has been tolerating this for some months but dyslexic child now needs to use laptop and cannot cope with dead keys.
Any ideas? Laptop is 2 weeks out of warranty and end user just asked me to take a look, problem has been around during warranty period.

    Hi Phil
Can you notice the same issue if you connect an external keyboard or does this happen only with an internal one?
I cant imagine that this has something to do with the heat but if you want you can clean your notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators.
If not you have to replace the whole keyboard. Normally its not so expensive so dont worry about this. You can also ask your ASP if they can repair it as gesture of goodwill.

If possible I would arrange for a good service center to go over it. Hopefully they have a variety of parts in stock. They can test and verify all is working. The previous attempts are based on guesses by the person at the other end of the phone without diagnostic tests to assess the culprit. It is extremely unlikely for a webcam to fail & for it & a Mic to fail together should be an indicator to a good technician it is something else. EG Motherboard
Take it to a servicing dealer and wait for it.

After updating to software version 5.1, I'm experiencing trouble with my Apple TV and my iMatch music.
After starting the music using iMatch it starts normal and nothing is wrong, but sometimes it stops after a few minutes (5-30 min).
The only thing to get it started again is to restart my Apple TV or else it wil keep trying to load my (iMatch) music and nothing happens at all.
Are there more users having this problem? What is the possible solution to this problem?
    Thanks in advance

I have the same problem and haven't found an answer or seen one. I don't have any problems downloading/streaming off the net but the iTunes timeout is driving me crazy. Did you ever find the problem?

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck

  • T430s Takes Several Minutes to Shut Down

    Hey all,
I've got a T430s running Windows 8.1. The machine runs great and boots very fast (probably helps that I bought an SSD); however, when I shut down, it takes several minutes (5+ minutes) to fully power-down. The screen goes black, but USB devices continue to have power and the fan still spins until finally it powers down. The same issue happens when I close the lid and put the machine to sleep.
Before anyone blames Windows 8.1: This didn't happen right after I upgraded to 8.1. It seemed to start several days after the 8 --> 8.1 upgrade, and I'm not sure what variable changed to cause this.
    Any ideas? Thanks!

Nothing in either the System or Application logs that would indicate that there were any problems shutting down. I can see where User32 indicates that the "power off" shutdown has been initiated, then about 5 more log entries in System after that, all of which appear to be normal (i.e. related to services shutting down). The time on these records are all within a few seconds of each-other. I don't see any outliers that are a few minutes out (i.e. things logged several minutes after the shutdown).
One thing I did just notice is that I see the following Critical notice from Kernel-Power after booting up from shutting down:
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
So it's not even going down cleanly. But I still have no idea what the offending driver/service/app is.

  • Audio stops after about 5 minutes

After rendering/encoding, the sound on my finished DVD stops after approximately 5 minutes. It is fine on iMovie, and also is there in iDVD when using preview.
In contrast to other posts in this forum, there are no slide shows on my DVD, and all sound comes from the camcorder together with the video.
I am using "Create Disc Image", and I have tried both playing back with DVD player from that very disc image, and actually burning it on a DVD and playing it back from there.
I have also thrown out the whole iDVD project and started from scratch by creating a new project from iMovie.
Since my DVD is just about 60 min, I have also tried both "quality" and "performance" encoding - same result.
The audio stops in the middle of a 4-min clip as defined in iMovie.
    I am using iDVD 5.0.1.
This process (importing from camcorder, editing in iMovie, building menus etc. in iDVD, creating disc image, burning) is something I have done for several DVDs previously without problems (but maybe with iDVD 5.0)

Thanks for your help! You helped solve the issue, albeit indirectly...
At this point, I want to share my experience, in the hope that it might be helpful to others:
After finding that chapter markers had nothing to do with the problem, I found that indeed my camcorder was set to the dreaded 12 bit. Oh dear! The original DV tape is long gone. (At first I did not expect this to be a problem, since I had made several DVDs successfully with the existing settings, but then there are all these horror stories in discussions about what 12 bit can do to you.)
So to rescue my movie, I found advice to "share" my iMovie back to a fresh DV tape, and then re-import it with the 16 bit setting.
This lead to the next issue: After a number of minutes of re-exporting to DV tape, the video received by the camcorder would freeze, while the audio continued. This happened at several different points in several differerent attempts.
So next I visited iMovie discussions, where I found advice to clean up my Mac. I used Mac Sweeper, and now indeed my Mac runs faster and smoother for many apps. I also downgraded my QuickTime version. But another attempt of exporting from iMovie to DV tape also failed, but now it failed at exactly the same point where the audio stopped in my DVD!!! (Even though on the export-to-DV-tape it was not the audio but the video that froze.)
Next I found that when playing that problematic scene in iMovie, the iMovie program would also freeze at that very point, making it necessary to "force quit" out.
In the end the solution was to chop out the problematic bit in that scene. Now everything works fine, including the iDVD step.

Randomly skips/fails to play some samples during playback?

You're right that was foolish let me clarify.
Raising the I/O buffer thing is a good idea, i've tried that already though and no joy
BASICALLY i've had this problem with a couple of tracks, ones which i have worked on the longest and probably the ones with the most effect plugins and tracks used. Seemingly at random during playback some of the samples dont play (and some even stop playing halfway through the sample). If the regions are bounced, the resulting wav file visibly splits the original sound where the computer 'decided' to stop/restart playing the sample. Again, i haven't found a pattern: - at one point a four bar loop with three tracks solo'd would play all the tracks perfectly during playback for a few seconds, then suddenly switch to only playing one track, then switch back after another few seconds.
    Weird.
I think it may be related to previous experience which i have had with the Space Designer and Echo effects, where the echo or reverb sound itself cuts out halfway through the sound/after a seemingly random amount of time (and then cuts back in).
I've seen this reverb and effect problem on more than one computer, but the original problem with the track playback is, in my experience, unique to my system.
The computer i'm using is not old or at all running out of memory (although i realise this does not exempt it from being the cause of the problem)
Anyway this has been trolling me for weeks and its driving me mad
    Thanks

  • Why does my OS X 10.6.8 have various applications hang for several minutes, then resume. This is not a startup problem.

I upgraded to Mac OS X 10.6.8 a few weeks ago. It seemed to be running OK, so we upgraded another system also. Now both machine are, from time to time, stalling whatever application is running. Everything stops or runs veeeeeeerrrrrry slowly for several minutes even including bringing other windows to the front. The disk runs almost like it is swapping a lot. Then the system frees up and runs normally for a while. This is not a startup problem. I occurrs on systems that have been running for a day or two or more. It happens on an iMac and on a MacBookPro. Neither of them had this behavior before the 10.6.8 upgrade.

    Jocke27 wrote:
What do you mean with corrupt?
Why did you suggest that I created a new profile?
There are cache files and other system files that are created every time a user account is created.  Sometimes these are corrupted in the OS and it really has no bearing on the specific application but it can lead to erratic behavior.  Creating a new user recreates all these system files and thus it's almost like starting fresh.  It's one step shy of re-installation of an OS.  So because changing the user fixed the issue, then we have eliminated the fact that the application is causing the error and we know the OS is causing the error.
I can't just go in to that profile when I want to use?
I wouldn't recommend it.  This can lead to more problems with the OS down the road with other applications and depending on where the corruption lies it can lead to issues with OS upgrades or even installing new software.  The files that are typically most critical to users are stored in the Applications folder or the Documents/Sites/Pictures folders.  You can easily drag them over to a new user account.  If you have email being backed up for a product like Thunderbird you can also bring over many of the Library items as well.

  • Logging into Hyperion Planning is taking several minutes for users

    Hello All,
I'm hoping someone can help with an urgent issue. A problem has popped up the day after everyone returned from holiday break. All users that are listed in MSAD in Shared Services are taking several minutes to log into Hyperion Planning. The only users that are not having problems are admin and a testuser account. Both of these accounts are from the Native Directory.
When I go into Shared Services and do a search in the MSAD, it is taking several minutes for the list of users or groups to come up. Everything is working normally in Planning when I'm using the admin account, except for when I'm trying to assign access to a dimension. That is not working, but I can modify an existing access to a dimension.
Our IT department has restarted all Hyperion services and made sure that the service account (active directory) is not locked. Everything on their end looks like its running correctly, as far as they can tell. I've refreshed the database and security filters, but that has not corrected anything and I've reregistered the application with shared services.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    David

    Hello John,
Thank you for the response. I'm not sure if we do have multiple MSAD servers, so I've forwarded the question on to my IT department and I'm waiting for their response.
During my call with Oracle support, they suggested turning off the MSAD group configuration and restarting Hyperion to see if that would help. The only area that it seemed to help is in searching for users in MSAD. That works a lot faster now, but it didn't fix the problem with the users logging into Hyperion. I've sent Oracle the shared services logs for Admin, Hub and Security as they requested and I'm waiting for their response.
    Thanks,
    David

  • LiveCycle/JBoss just dies after several minutes.  Have to rerun Configuration Manager

I installed LiveCycle ES Turnkey with JBoss on a fresh install of WinXP Pro and it seemed to work flawlessly. I followed the turnkey install guide and it went without any problems. After the install I opened the LC Administrator Console and logged in with no problems. I changed the passwords and poked around a bit. It sat idle for a few moments and the next time I tried to do anything I get the standard Failed to Connect message as if I were trying to browse the web while not online.
I've tried several things to bring it back to life -- restarting the service (it's 'JBoss for Adobe LiveCycle ES' right? it always fails to stop this service when I try to restart it.), restarting the whole machine, starting the server from run.bat in jboss\bin... nothing works. I have to run the Adobe LiveCycle Configuration Manager again to be able to connect to http://localhost:8080/. I've done this three times now and every time it's the same thing. It works for several minutes and then dies for seemingly no reason.
I really appreciate any help I can get!
