Creative Zen Micro Firmware problem: "Device not connected, please connect your devi

After an exhausti've search, I've found the fix for losing your firmware and not being able to update it via download from the creative.com. To explain my problem, I had issues with my device connectivity, so I tried to option of reloadinging my firmware via Recovery Mode (option 3, 'Reload Firmware'). After selecting this option, I tried to download and update my firmware via the creative.com website. The module to update my firmware displayed the error message "Device not connected, please connect your device." After about 2 hours of trying various suggested fixes, I found a relati'vely easy fix by running together various suggestions I found for other problems. First rollback your Windows Media Player (WMP) via the instructions found on this page: http://www.auditmypc.com/uninstall-m...layer0beta.asp. Restart your computer after rolling back WMP.
When your compter restarts, insert the "playsforsure" CD labeled "Easy Start CD." Follow the directions for reinstalling WMP. After WMP is reinstalled, restart again. When the computer restarts, return to the CD and follow the directions in the prompt. Reconnect your device when prompted. Once you reconnect your device, it may not function right away. If this is the case, go to the 'Start' button, under 'Control Pannel,' select 'System.' Under 'System' select 'Hardware' and then 'Device Manager.' Find your portable device under 'Uni'versal Serial Bus controllers.' Click on your device and select 'Uninstall' from the small icons at the top of the window. When this is completed, unplug and plug your device back in. After this is done, click on 'Scan for hardware changes,' also a small icon at the top of the window. If your device had the problem mine did, it should now be recognized. Go back to the Creative website and download the latest firmware. The module should now find your player without any problems.
The only thing I can figure is that the "playsforsure Easy Start CD" must have a device driver that solves the problem that you can't find anywhere else. I hope this helps someone out there (tech support was telling me that I was going to have to ship my device back to the company I bought it from to get it exchanged...which would have taken at least a month, I'm sure). Good luck to you all.

For all of you non-technical Micro owners:
I found a fix for this that I hope will help others out.
When I want to Sync tracks to My Zen using Yahoo Jukebox or WMP, I simply reboot my machine with the device PLUGGED IN. After Windows starts up, my applications recognize that the Zen Micro is connected. Good Luck.

  • Creative Zen micro: "Firmware Problem&qu

hey, i have a Creative zen micro (orange, 6gb but i think it doesent matters"), but when i turn it on, it says "Firmware problem".
and it goes to the menu (think is called Recovery menu) and it shows:
    Creative Zen Micro V0.0.65
    1.Clean Up
    2.Format all
    3.Reload frimware
    4.Reboot
now creative tells me to download a new firmware.
    i did.
    then to "RELOAD FIRMWARE"
and click on the upgrade, but then it says that there is no player connected, and my compuer does recognize it.
is there any way to fix this or is my zen busted?

I had a simalar problem with my Zen xtra, if it failed durng a firmware update and its stuck in recue mode try this:
Remove all creative software and drivers from your P.C
remove windows media player and media player runtime ( from control panel/add/remove programs - if you have them listed there) you should see it go through a rollbackl procedure to an earlier version of wiondows media player.
Downlaod the latest firmware for your player
    Re-boot/re start your P.C
Go to the creative support website, and download the plays for sure software suite
    listed as:
<i>. Creative MediaSource Plugin for PlaysForSure devices (version .00.8)3.98 MB 28 Apr 05 </i>
install the software by clicking on it.
RE-boot your P.C, with your player conected via USB
once your P.C re-starts, go to the location where the firmware was downloaded to and get ready to start the upgrade
Copnnect your player to its charger ( unless it charges via USB)
On your player slect the reload OS option in the rescue menu
When prompted by your player start the firmware update on your PC.
<i>with the Zen xtra firmware you had/need to select the language option in the update on the P.C when the p[layer displays the 'update over USB' message.</i>

  • Creative Zen Micro 6GB/Problems with Power Switch and Firmw

The power switch on my Zen Micro has died. I can't turn it on or off unless I 'jump start' it from a USB cable and leave it alone to go into idle shutdown. I've had this player just three weeks and this is happened and frankly I'm disgusted. But wait, my story get's worse:
So before sending it back to Creative I thought that I should at least exhaust every possible cure. First on my list? A Firmware upgrade to v2.22.05. I downloaded the program and set about installing the new firmware but halfway through the process it hung and I had to end it prematurely. Now what I had was a ZM that apparently had v2.22.05 but was not being recognised at all by my computer. Media Explorer wasn't picking up on it and neither was WMP although strangely when I connect the device it's there in the Device Manager...
So, check back with the website and it said to download an update for Mediasource and that should solve the problem. Downloaded the patch but then realised that I hadn't installed Mediasource on my computer (can't remember why I didn't though). Went back to the downloads page and downloaded Mediasource. Tried to install it but I can't. The reason? because my computer isn't detecting the ZM and I can't install it until it recognises that it's there.
As a last resort I thought that I would try to use 'Rescue Mode'. Seemed simple enough, remove the battery and hold down the power switch. Then put the battery back in and wait for the rescue screen to come up. Seems easy enough. Oh wait, I don't have a working power switch.
What I do have though, is a small piece of plastic and metal that I can't turn on, can't turn off, can't put any songs on, can't listen to, can't fix and can't be bothered with. I have a ?60 paperweight.
Anyone at all have any idea what I should do? I just want to put it all in a box and send it back to Amazon with a request for a full refund or a threat to take them to the Small Claims Court.

Although a failed power switch is not unknown, I only recall seeing two or three other cases of this. It's not common.
If WMP isn't working with the device having v2 firmware something is wrong. Unfortunately this can be difficult to fix, but take a look here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net.
MediaSource won't detect the player if there's some issue e.g. WMP0 not detecting it. You can of course also try installing Zen Micro Media Explorer (Creative Zen Micro Media Explorer Web Update to be specific) which has MTP support.
Are you are presumably under guarantee, and as you bought from an Internet store, it's best to return it direct to Creative. Contact Creative Support to arrange this.

  • Creative Zen Micro Photo Problem (Detecti

BEFORE I CONTINUE, REFERRING TO THE KNOWLEDGE BASE DOES NOT WORK FOR ME, I TRIED THE STEPS BUT THEY SIMPLY DON'T WORK.
    HERE IS THE PROBLEM:
YESTERDAY, I RECEIVED MY ZEN MICRO PHOTO BLACK 8GB in the mail, and was able to get the charging started through my computer after installing the required software (mediasource, media player, wmp 9.5 codec, etc). Before I started the charging, I connected my player's USB cable to the back of my pc. Windows XP w/SP2 prompts that it 'found new hardware.' I go ahead and check in my computer if the player would be able to be accessed. I also confirmed with Creative's mediasource software, and it claims that 'no player was detected.' I did the same in windows media player 0, and says that no hardware was detected. I confirmed to make sure that the USB cable was properly connected, and it was. I tried all the ports and tried other devices through them, and they were able to be successfully detected and used, (i.e; web cam). I don't understand why my creative zen micro photo would not be detected by the software included. Windows is requiring me to install some sought of driver for the player, but I already installed all the required utilities and codecs. I believe it is charging and is detected by windows but not as a removable storage, etc, just 'FOUND NEW HARDWARE', and then no drivers found even through the CD creative provided me. I am also fearing that the battery is taking a long time to charge. This morning I saw that the player was on, but was still charging(I assume). I decided to charge while the player was turned off. Hopefully, now it will be fully charged while the player remains off. I will check when I get home. In the mean time, would some one please assist and respond to me for resolving this situation ASAP for the detection of the player. Thank you very much, Arjun (please do not further me to the knowledge base site as I have already tried all the steps, and no improvement what so what in successfully operating this player. Thank you. Just to add on, I also attempted for a firmware update, and the utility said it was not able to detect the player either, so I wasn't able to even complete a firmware update. Please assist me, URGENT. Thank you.

I sadly am very unhappy with the ZEN Microphoto 8. I was planning on leaving on a trip in the morning and found that suddenly my laptop no longer will recognize my device. I hasve been using the device for several months now with no problems at all, unitl this afternoon. It went into recovery mode and no matter what I tried I could not get it out.
I was finally able to unlock the unit by connecting the unit to my desktop. I was then able to install the firmware update. But now the unit will not work on my laptop at all. All of my media is on my laptop. I have tried several cables to no avail. I am sure that someone is going to mention the suggestion that the device not be used on a laptop, however I find it frustrating that after so much time the unit suddenly does not operate. I tried all of the suggestions in the support section. And it seems truly sad that this might just be due to the cinnection to athe laptop, considering the number of people that now use these as their primary PCs.
If any suggestions can be provided as to the cause of this problem I would love to get it fixed.
    Eric

  • Zen Micro Firmware problems ***FIXED

Like many of you I had the problem of updating my firmware, only to have it fail and then read "Firmware error" when you try to restart the device. The end result is what appears to be a dead Zen Micro and the PC cannot recoginze it. Well with the help of SSR I finally fixed the problem.
** Please note I am using Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 installed
    "Firmware error"
The way to fix it is simple. Download and reinstall Windows Media Player 0. I already had it installed, but I reinstalled it anyway. Then go into your Device Manager and right click on your !Creative Zen Mirco and update the drivers. The system will now find the new drivers (MTP?MPT?) and you have connectivity with your Zen again.
Now you'll want to rollback the firmware to .0. You can try to do 2.2 but it will fail every time because the device thinks you already have it, and overriding it will result in "firmware update failed".
Once you have .0 installed again, you can then update the firmware to 2.2.
After it is installed, take out the battery and boot into recovery mode. Choose REBOOT as your option and nothing else. This will rebuild the file library and complete your firmware upgrade.
Now you have a Zen Micro 2.2 that your COMPUTER will detect but your software will not. That said, you need to go to the download section and download the following software.
Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.20 for Creative MediaSource (<FONT color=#222222 size=><B>9.72 MB</B>)
    Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2
Creative Zen Micro Media Explorer Web Update
Creative MediaSource Plugin for PlaysForSure devices (version .00.8)
I reccomend installing then each one at a time, then rebooting as the system says and moving on to the next one.
When you are all finished, plug in your Zen Micro and it should be working. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Since then My pc does not recognize my zen!!
When I look at my info in the zen it says it has 2.2.02 installed.
I have tried the following already:
) Install firmware ..0 -> Did not work because it says: please attach zen.
    2) ReInstall MediaPlayer 0 -> Did not work... still: "no machine attached".
    3) Go to device manager and update driver -> Here it can see the zen and i updated the driver, but still..when I try to update the firmware back to ..0 it says: please attach zen.

Just to eliminate one possibility: do you have Windows XP with Service Pack or 2 and Windows Media Player 0 installed on your computer? The reason I ask is that Version 2.x firmware will not work with other versions of Windows or WMP.

    Hello,
I've had my Zen Micro for a year now and due to a "screw up" when i start my player it displays the error "Firmware Problem" and start up in recovery mode. When I try to reload the firmware the update application on my pc it says "Your player is not connected" now can I fix this so I can start using my wonderful Zen again?
PC Specs If needed: Windows Media Center Service Pack 2

Thanks for the reply, but that firmware download doesn't work for me. As I said in my original post, my player is not recognized as being connected when it is. It is not my computer because Jukebox opens up when it detects the device and it is listed among my removable hardware.
I've downloaded the software, but nothing happens after the "select your language" prompt. It just says "Your player is not connected please connect your player" with a grayed out 'Upgrade' button and a darkened 'Close' button. I've tried unplugging and reconnecting the USB, but it still doesn't recognize that it's there.

Okay guys, I need your help. I have a 4 GBsilver Zen Micro (not photo). This is my second one. The original one had headphone jack issues. So I've had this unit for about 0 months. Now, yesterday I was listening to the Talking Heads when it froze up. I didn't drop it, it just froze. So I took the battery out and put it back in. It said Rebuilding Library. Okay, fine,. this has happened before. But, then the status bar froze up about 3/4 the way to the end. Then about 3 minutes later, the screen says "Firmware Problem." What should I do? Should I reinstall the firmware? Where do i get it from?

  • Creative Zen Micro: Driver problems and mo

Hello, hope somebody can help me out a bit here.
My Creative Zen Micro seems to have stumbled rather severely. I get a firmware error and the recovery menu. I've tried the Clean Up tool, Formatting it, and reloading the firmware doesn't work at all, as the Zen won't connect properly on my Win2k box (probably due to the lack of support for it on Win2k).
It does connect (sort of) in Windows Media Player, which is where I transferred most of my music to begin with, though now it displays nothing in the contents of the Zens harddisk (obviously this was before I formatted my Zen).
So I tried installing the drivers on my new computer which runs Windows XP SP2. The drivers install, but Windows doesn't seem to care. When I plug in the Zen I get a "Found New Hardware" message, however it can't seem to locate the drivers I just installed.
I think I might be able to get things going right if only the drivers would work on WinXP. Or it might just be that the Zen is totally borked. I'm unsure.
    Any thoughts?

Really hate to bump my own thread.. but.. anyone have any ideas what to do?

But now it won't even charge @ work and it is completely drained. And since I was never able to upload the software, the terminology used in this forum is foreign to me.

Not quite true. Creative doesn't support it, but there is 3rd party software that allow Creative players to be used on a Mac, and plenty of people who do.

  • Develop software for connecting to creative zen touch and other devices not recognized by wind

    hi there,
as a programmer i wonder, is it possible to obtain information of how to connect to usb-connected creative device (which is not recognized automatically by windows, as the zen touch) and how to communicate with it's is there any documentation about that available to "non-creative" ;-) developers?
the idea is to create a plugin (e.g. for musikcube) that enables the programm to access the files on the device.
i know there are third party companies that do provide software for connecting to e.g. zen touch, but i do not think that they have figured out every little bit by themselves, have they?
    greetings and thanks a lot
    asdf

    Try this:
Download <a href='http://www.delldjsite.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=444' target=_blank>this[/url] file. Extract it to whatever folder you like. Inside that folder run the file fixup.cmd. A DOS window will open up and start display messages on what its doing, when its done it will instruct you to remove the device from Device Manager and reconnect it.
Try this and see if it works.

  • ZEN MICRO PHOTO USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNI

help !! i am also having a problem similar to your and just about everyone elses on here. I just purchased a zen microphoto for xmas a month ago and it has been a nightmare . it has worked for about a month perfectly then it ceased to be recognized by? my Alienware area 5 desktop system which previously recognized it fine. I took all of the steps and scanned all of the forums then realized that after uninstalling my windows media player and rolling back to 0 it began to be recognized again. well then surprisingly and maybe not so much so after looking at so many of the post of these forums. Well I have taken so many steps to try to get my ZEN MICRO PHOTO to once again become recognized by my computer? and yet again all efforts have been fruitless. I reformated my ZEN MICROPHOTO?and now when i plug it in a small window pops up at the bottom stating that the USB DEVICE IS NOT RECOGNIZED . I then cannot upload new firmware and can in fact do absolutely nothing but gaze at the player which boots up then fades to black while my pc sees my player as an unknown usb device. I even reformated the pc for the sake of the player , cutting off the nose despite the face in other words and still no dice. I have windows xp service pack 2 , all updates and bios up to date. My pc is only 2 years old and have a lexmark printer? a mouse and a keyboard attched to it , none of which create conflict. Even after reformatting my pc i made sure my player was one of the first peripherial devices connected and all to no avail. I think this is a disgrace that such a compnay as CREATIVE cannot put foward a quality product. Does anyone out there have any solid suggestions on how to fix this proiblem if so they would be gretaly apprecaited. ThanksEdward

vacantmind: You might also want to make sure that you get the latest drivers and software as follows:
. Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03
    2. Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2
    3. Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.9 for Creative MediaSource
Install . then connect the player to the PC. Then install 2. and 3. (the player must be connected for 2. to verify you have a Creative product).
Also an important test is to install the drivers and software on another PC, say a friend's, and see whether you have the problem. If you don't, then the issue is with your PC, or a compatibility issue with the player. If you do, then there's something wrong with the cable or player.

  • Zen Micro "Firmware Problem" - One solution and what to do BEFORE it happ

My Zen Micro 6GB recently croaked with the dreaded "firmware problem" message. After a call to support, I was told to send it in, however I was later able to connect to the unit and download new firmware.
    Here's what happened:
In the middle of a playlist, the unit froze, displaying "firmware problem."
    - I took the battery out and powered up in recovery mode, then tried both reboot and reforomat. No luck; Still got "firmware problem."
    - I downloaded firmware updates, thn connected the unit to my laptop, which does not have MTP media explorer installed. The laptop does have Yahoo Music Engine and Windows Media 0, both of which are used regularly to copy music to device.
    - The computer recognized the Zen Micro, but the firmware update did not run, saying it could not connect to the device.
    - Retried several times, after reformatting, etc.
Now, here's what seemed to fix it
    - Let the battery drain completely while in the unit
    - Connected the Zen Micro to a computer with the MTP media explorer already installed. This is a system that is also used to regularly download music to the device.
    - Allowed the battery to charge for an hour
    - Started MTP media explorer, noticed that device went into "Recovery Mode"
    - Ran the firmware upgrade and it installed.
This is conjecture, but it seems that the MTP media explorer must be running to launch the firmware upgrade, but you can't install MTP without a valid device connected. I don't know why this is - maybe some kind of copy protection scheme. I only had it installed on one of my computers because it seemed unnecessary and I hate loading software that I'm not going to actually use.
This is what worked for me. Hope it works for you.
I'm still really disappointed with Creative's warranty terms, lack of phone support past 60 days and failure of tech support to recognize the problem and offer a solution, but my unit is working again and I didn't have to send it back!

By "MTP media explorer", do you mean the MTP/PlaysForSure version of Zen Micro Media Explorer? The earlier versions say "(for MTP devices)"; the latest ones say "(for PlaysForSure devices)". Or do you mean the Microsoft "MTP icon" in My Computer, which should appear on all MTP-capable systems (including your laptop)?
I don't really think it's a DRM or copy protection issue; I think the "firmware problem" is wiping out the hardware code the firmware installer uses to confirm that the device is indeed a Micro instead of, say, an iRi'ver. I suspect ZMME is one of the alternate means it uses to confirm that a Micro is connected. (An issue for further testing is whether ZMME should be launched or just installed.) Firmware fails on all kinds of devices; I suspect this is just a peculiarity of Creative's MTP/Janus firmware installer.
This is likely to be a significant issue for the FAQs and/or Creative knowledge base. With a growing number of MTP/Janus players in the Creative lineup (Sleek, MicroPhoto, and shortly Touch & Xtra), it probably won't be just a Micro issue in the future.
Edit: I just read the other thread, and they seem to solve it by going to a system without Creative software and installing the ..0 firmware. So there seems to be two solutions for now:
If you don't have any Creative software installed, reload firmware and run the ..0 upgrade. (If you need 2.x firmware, then install the Creative jukebox driver and run the 2.20.05 upgrade; you can uninstall the driver afterwards. Sorry, but some of us need 2.x firmware.)</LI>
If you have the 2.x ZMME installed, open it, then reload firmware and run the 2.20.05 upgrade.</LI>

I've always had a hard time trying to get my computer to recognize my mp3 player. I'd have to connect it multiple times in order to get my computer to see it. Now it just doesn't work at all. I've reinstalled the mass-storage device driver a few times, as well as the zen micro drivers that came on the CD and from the site. I've tried with default firmware and I've updated the firmware. None of this works. I'm hoping someone here can help me out. I'm almost positi've it's not my USB settings as my external hard dri've works fine when I have the mp3 player disconnected. Whenever I connect the player everything messes up and isn't recognized. By itself the player actually freezes and I have to take out the battery for it to reset itself.

  • Creative Zen Micro Firmware Prob

So I've got a Zen Micro bout a year or two back and it stopped working a whle back.
It turns on fine but used to make a buzzing sound and?freeze. It had a small box with?'Firmware Problem' written on the screen.
Lately, it still makes the?buzzing sound but freezes on the Creative Logo screen.
I've tried to renew the Firmware and I tried the recovery tool thing, but neither worked.
Is there any way to fix it's Or is it totaly gone?
    Thanks in advance.

Did the firmware problem happen during a firmware update, or did it just happen all of a sudden, and if so how?
to re-load the firmware, download the latest firmware on a Windows XP machine, go to control panel, tne add/remove programs, look for windows media player and if its there click on remove, you should see a window saying something along the lines of windows media player rollback.
Next lok for something called ( or somethg like)windows media player runtime, and remove that ( it may show the roll back screen again, continue, and complete the process)
    re-start windows
Plug in your Creative MP3 player via USB connect it to a chharger ( if it uses/can use an external charger) and let it go to 'rescue mode'
Click on the firmware update, and when it asks you what language, highlight re-load OS ( or firmware) in recovery mode on your player.
As soon as the screen on your player prompts you to re-load firmware, click on your language choice on the P.C upgrade window.
If there is no language option, then get ready to select re-load OS on your player when the update starts on your P.C.
    This only works with XP
    If the above doesnt work:
Did the firmware error occur as a result of an attemtp to upgrade the formware to a plays for sure version?
Is the player regognised by your P.C running windows XP? ( go to control panel then hardware, then device manager?
This is what happened when i tried to upgrade ther firmware on my Zen xtra, what i did to fix it was based on what other people had tried on various other creative playerws such as the touch/micro/vision etc
