Data (Preferences, Passwords, Bookmarks, etc.) Loss

I recently installed Image Browser version 6.0.1.37, which came with my new Canon PowerShot G9 camera. It seemed to be working fine until I started to browse images in other folders on my desktop. The app stopped responding. I finally used Force-Quit to close the app and restarted my computer. When I opened it, my desktop was gone. It was as if the computer were being opened up for the first time. All the customization I had done was gone, as well as all the folders I had on my desktop. Passwords, server information, preferences, etc; in programs like Apple Mail and my DSL setup were gone and all the addesses in Address Book. If I search for folders that were on my desktop using FIND, I can find them and if I look at the path and click on the desktop folder, I see all the stuff that was originally on my desktop, but they don't appear on the desktop. Any suggestions of how to restore my original settings? Any ideas about what might have happened to cause this problem.
Thanks, John

  • I upgraded to Windows 8. I had to download firefox. I signed in to my account but my passwords, bookmarks, etc. aren't there.

After upgrading to Windows 8 FireFox wasn't on my computer so I downloaded it. After downloading it I signed in to my account but my passwords, bookmarks, etc were not there. How do I get my profile back? I have changed my folder view to include hidden files. The only file in my profile folder is xxxxx.default with today's date. I do have my bookmarks on my iPad but I am afraid to sync for fear it will overwrite the ipad with the empty computer profile instead of the other way around. And I don't think my passwords are on the ipad Firefox - are they? HELP!

  • How do I merge Firefox on my mac and Firefox on my PC to just have one set of passwords, bookmarks etc. shared via Firefox Sync?

I have two versions of Firefox 4, one on my Macbook pro running OS X and one on bootcamp running Windows 7 professional. They both have different bookmarks, add ons and saved passwords. Is there any way, using firefox sync, that I can collaborate all of the information saved in both of my firefox programs into one profile, and then have them sync to eachother so that when I save a password on my mac, I can access it on windows, etc? I would like a solution which involves losing none of my data moving forward- I want to keep all of my add ons, passwords, and bookmarks from both programs.

'''This is the same code!''' The only difference is that I have a source pointing to an .mp4 movie '''first''' in my page. Firefox does not play the movie and does not find the Ogg movie after the .mp4 movie. Furthermore Firefox (with the Adobe Flash plugin)does not find the Flash movie after the Ogg. Microsoft's IE finds Flash, to the extent it does not understand the <video> tag. Google's Chrome finds the Ogg. Safari and IE 9 find the .mp4.
I '''must''' have the .mp4 movie first for the mobile browsers (possibly excepting Firefox Mobile, which does not run on iOS).
Can you please look at: http://www.readingsbykaren.com/new/
Or http://www.readingsbykaren.com/ after 10:35 AM Eastern Standard Time.
This is on the home page of the website and I would really like for this to work for Firefox users. In that ''it works for all other browsers tested,'' I am wondering if there is something specific that Firefox needs that makes it incompatible with everything else.

  • How can I migrate my 3.5.2 profile/passwords/bookmarks/etc on a WinXP system to a Win7 system with 3.6.13 installed?

I am replacing an old laptop running WinXP with a desktop running Win7. I have Firefox 3.5.2 on the XP system and FF 3.6.13 on the Win7 system. I have an extensive list of bookmarks, passwords and settings on the FF 3.5.2 installation I'd like to migrate to the FF 3.6.13 installation. I've looked through some of the knowledge base, but either the scenario doesn't match, or the instructions don't do what I need completely. Is there a procedure to do what I would like to accomplish?

  • I am about to upgrade my eMac to the latest iMac. What can I do to transfer PPC software so the iMac can use my data such as email contacts, safari bookmarks, etc.?

I am about to upgrade from my eMac to the latest iMac. The eMac has given up the ghost at 10 years of age.
I have a full backup of my eMac so could use old email and safari contact/bookmarks,etc.
What is simplest way to do this?
Will the iMac distinguish between old PPC software and new Intel if I try to do a migration from old to new?
Can I use a flash drive to copy and paste required items from old to new?
    All advice gratefully received.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
      1. Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
      2. Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
      3. All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
      4. Contextual Menu Items
      5. Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
      6. Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius  work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.  Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

      6. Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
      7. OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs.  The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode.  It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
      1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
      2. Backup your data.  This is vitally important in case you make a mistake
          or there's some other problem.
      3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
      4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
      5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and
registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your
desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
    1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
    2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:

      c. MacBook Air - Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and
          wireless 802.11n networks.
Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the  Discussions where specific applications store their data.
    5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

How do I use that data file to get old email contacts, Safari bookmarks, etc ?

FireWire cables are dirt cheap and that's how you should be doing the migration. You might have to start over, wiping the new machine's HD, and restoring the software as described in the Everything Mac manual that came with it. See Best Practices and Setup new Mac for more details.

  • Icloud wants to merge bookmarks etc. on second mac

I successfully upgraded my Macbook Pro to 10.7.3, switched from mobile me and activated icloud to use all data on this laptop.
The correct data is syncing with my iPhone and iPad (both os5). Now I have upgraded my home mini mac to 10.7.3 and turned on icloud. What a disaster.
If I go to system preferences, iCloud, and check the boxes for contacts and bookmarks it comes up with a statement "Do you want to merge bookmarks...". No I want to replace all bookmarks etc with the data on iCloud, which is correct. I am concerned that there will be hundreds of bookmarks and contacts that will be duplicated in some way.
All devices are using the same identical AppleID.
What do I do? Can I delete some mysterious address book file and all Safari bookmarks on the mini and then expect the "merge" to work?

If the old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, try going to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  Now try using your current password to sign out of the old account, even though it's asking for the password for your old ID.  If successful, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Then you can go to System Preferences>iCloud and sign back in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • Downloaded new version but it's put bookmarks etc in folder on desktop, how to reinstall ?

I've installed the new version of firefox but there are no bookmarks transfered to this version, instead there's a folder appeared on the desktop called Old Firefox Data, how do i reinstall my bookmarks etc ?

That happens when you reset (refresh) Firefox.

Isn't any data imported in the new profile?
When you reset Firefox then a new profile is created and some personal data (bookmarks, history, cookies, passwords, form data) is automatically imported and the current profile folder will be moved to the desktop to an "Old Firefox Data" folder.
Installed extensions and other customizations (toolbars, prefs) that you have made are lost and need to be redone.
It is possible to recover data from the old profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

    Read this article:

  • After installing Firefox again, I wanted to get back my settings, bookmarks etc. by syncronising with Firefox Sync but accidentaly settings from a fresh browser

After formatting the partition and installing Firefox again, I wanted to get my settings, bookmarks etc. back by syncronising with Firefox Sync but accidentaly settings from a fresh browser was uploaded and now I cannot have the browser the way I used to have. Is there any way to reverse this changes?

    Hi zoomy,
First check that you still have data in your sync account.
Firefox button > Options > Sync > Manage Account
It should tell you how much data is stored in the account. Is there any?
If there is still data in the sync account then you can follow the instructions in this article [[What is Firefox Sync?]]. Refer to the 'How much of my data is synced?' section. Change the option to 'Replace all data on this computer with my Sync data'.
I hope that works for you.
If there is no data in your sync account you will be able to get it back by syncing from another computer. Just make sure that the settings on that computer are not replaced by the blank account again. You can use the 'Replace all other devices with this computer's data' option to prevent this.
Please note that Firefox Sync is designed only to sync details between devices not as an online backup tool. If you are formatting a partition it is generally best to backup your profile folder along with any other data. See [[Managing profiles]] for more detail.
