Did I break my MBP????

I cannot get my MBP to boot back to OS X. I aborted my Windows installation due to a read error on the CD. Now the MBP keeps wanting to restart the install and is erroring out since the aborted install. Can I get back to OS X?

Sure. Hold down the option key as the machine boots up. That should let you choose between bootable devices. Your OS X installation should still be there intact.

  • Did i break it?

ok well i lost that little cap a while ago and the usb port kept coming undone and would expose that film thing inside the ipod. it was all fine until it actually came off. i managed to put it together and duct tape it (i know) and it plays and the lights come on and everything but when i put it in the computer no light comes on. is this a computer problem or did i break something?

It sounds like you broke something. As a matter of fact, you admit that you broke something.
The questions are really whose fault is it and who's going to pay for it? You can start asking those questions using the links on this page.

  • Did I break my trackpad?

    Hi everyone,
So I've been busy working on an assignment for my students.  My MacBook Pro suddenly started acting up on me and in a fit of frustration I slapped the sides of the sides to the left and right of the trackpad a few times.  My husband now says that the trackpad feels soft to him and doesn't seem to be working right.  Does anyone have any idea what's going on?  I don't thing i hit it that hard, it was just the ends of my fingers.  I didn't punch it or anything.  Is the trackpad really that sensitive? Do I need to make an appointment at the genius bar and send by book off for a fix?  Anyway, I look forward to hearing from anyone who might be able to help.
    Cheers!
    Tricia

The trackpad feels soft.  What I mean by this is the oomph that used to be in the click, isn't there anymore. When you try to use it, the physical click is really soft.  As soon as you touch it it reacts as if you are trying to click the mouse.  The actual track is fine, and it responds to multi touch without a problem.  So I guess I should ask, did I break my 'click'?

  • Did I Break My Mac?

I installed a driver a couple days ago and since then, I've noticed a lot of strange things happening with my computer.
Many common keyboard strokes using "shift" and "command" seem to be broken. Every time I restart my computer, my Airport is turned off and I have to go into the network diagnostics to set up my router. Also upon restarting, my disc drive opens and shuts automatically, and my "music" folder auto-opens on the desktop. There are some other strange behaviors dealing with my mouse as well.
It seems obvious that the driver messed up all of these functions, it's very bizarre. Since there isn't a driver rollback option with Macs, I'm not sure what to do. I did delete the driver install package. I've also tried a PRAM reset and a Disk Utility repair. I should note that this driver didn't mess anything up on my older computer (iMac G5).
Any ideas what I can do to fix this? Did I break my Mac?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The developer really should have implemented this as a Preference Pane and not a kernel extension.
Assuming it is a kernel extension, though, it lives in a subfolder in one of two places:
    /Library
    /System/Library
Search these two folders and their subfolders for the terms "xbox" or "360" and CAREFULLY examine any files you find with matching names. If you see one that is an obvious match, put it in the trash and reboot. You may also want to check the file creation/modification dates to ensure that you're tossing out the right file.
By "an obvious match," I mean something like "xbox360crappydriver.kext" -- you don't want to risk throwing away something you need.
P.S. If it is just a Preference Pane, simply visit:
    /Library/PreferencePanes and
    (Your home folder)/Library/PreferencePanes
and throw away any files with names that clearly reference the controller.

  • "Motion 4" icon greyed out after upgrading to Yosemite - Did Yosemite break "Motion 4" in Final Cut Studio?

Against my better judgement (now that Apple has turned into Microsoft 10 years ago, breaking apps with every OS update, followed by radio silence from Apple, pretending like they didn't do anything), I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Yosemite and noticed that my Motion 4 icon is now greyed out. Thanks Apple.
I still do the majority of my work in Final Cut Pro 7, with many, many, Motion 4 projects embedded in the timeline (so that I can change them in Motion and have them seamlessly updated in my Final Cut Pro project), including an unfinished feature length documentary on gay and lesbian history from 2000 BC until 1900 AD. Should I just throw the entire film into the rubbish bin? I would presume that Motion 5.1.2 is incompatible with Final Cut 7? So what am I supposed to do now?
1 - Downgrade to Mountain Lion (or heck, why not Snow Leopard?)?
2 - Switch to Adobe Premiere?
3 - All of the above?
    Thanks (for nothing, Apple).
MacBook Pro 15" with Retina Display
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

After some peacefull time my system crashed completely on Friday!
I installed all from Scratch to make sure its not some old stuff that I carried on during migration.
It's not a problem with the motion files as I deleted all of them and XML export is still crashing!
The situation is, that after installing it all I got the same quicktime translation error again and I am quite angry about how Apple handles clients who are working on projects with the recent FCP story.
Unfortunately due to the problems in exporting XML I am not even able to switch to Adobe Premier as this is the only way to import there.
After a lot of testing I am quite sure, that this issue has to do something with an Apple Update release between June 2011 and now.
Conclusion: Final Cut Studio II is not working correctly anymore as it did before June 2011!!! Apple, Please fix this issue asap.!!!!

  • DID ED04 BREAK SOMETHING THAT WORKED BEFORE DOWNLOAD

I am not having any operational or hardware problems with my phone at all. I have Froyo 2.2.1 with build ED01. Yesterday I became aware for the first time that my phone does not always ring when I am called. I am considering downloading ED04 but I am worried that it seems every time they try to fix something, they break something that was working.
If you downloaded ED04 and it broke something that you know for a fact worked perfectly before download I would be grateful if you posted here in detail. Thank you in advance.

Wow same here phone dont ring when called sometimes and I did the ED04 the other day so now I will wait for results. My other problem is text messaging will say someone else other than the one who texted me and I reply back to people to find it went to someone else.

  • Why did they break data tethering in 4.5 on the 8830 WE?

    Hi All,
Just wondering - why did the BB gods decide that tethering needed to be broken in v 4.5 of the device software?   Was it far too convenient to have a 2-3 year old phone that worked, and give us the free OS update?
I've tried every version of 4.5 - tethering is broken on all of them.  Error "Remote Computer not responding".  Looking at it on a port monitor - the device sends back a "NO CARRIER" right after it dials #777 ("ATDT#777").  The same phone and same PC works swimmingly when used the phone in 4.2.2.
So what's the deal?  I can't imagine how it could be a carrier issue.

Sorry dude, I know for a fact it works. RIM (or no one else) has removed tethering from OS 4.5 for ANY devices, including the 8830.
The fact that you don't have it working, and your carrier is less than stellar at customer service and quite frankly is lying to you, doesn't mean it is 'broken'.
If it were 'broken', you would hear a loud cry across the land. The 8830 is still one of the premier corporate devices on the market (being replaced by the Tour now). If users on OS 4.5 couldn't tether, more than just you and MTS would know about it.

  • Did Apple Break HD-DVD Playback with Mountain Lion using Apple DVD Player?

First of all, kindly spare me the commentary about Blu-Ray beating HD-DVD. Agreed and not the question. I have perfectly good reasons for using HD-DVD and it works very well for my purposes.
I authored an HD-DVD in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.2. as I have done many times before on Snow Leopard, but this time on Mountain Lion. When I try to play the HD-DVD, either from the physical disk from a disk image, the menu appears, but when the play button is pressed, the menu stays on screen, but the player shows the timecode of the movie playing, but with no sound or picture.
Thinking that perhaps the menu got corrupted, I put the same HD-DVD into a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and it played perfectly! Conclusion: Not a DVD Studio Pro problem.
Thinking that it might be DVD Player, I copied DVD Player 5.4 from the Snow Leopard MacBook Pro to the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro (which was running DVD Player 5.6), and the HD-DVD still had the same issue on the Mountain Lion MacBook Pro, under either of the DVD Player versions. Conclusion: Not a DVD Player issue.
The HD-DVD does mount and initialize, so it's not a hardware issue with the optical drive.
Conclusion: It would appear to me that it's an OS issue with Mountain Lion breaking (either intentionally or unintentionally), HD-DVD playback. Anyone know anything more about this issue? Anyone else saddened to see Apple turn into Microsoft circa 2005, and the MacOS turn into Vista? I haven't seen much of anything about it in the forums, which is why I'm posting it here.
Thanks Apple. I just spent the better part of 3 days transcoding and authoring this HD-DVD, only to have you screw it up for me 2 days before my film festival (the perfectly good reason for using HD-DVD). Kindly spare me the, "Why don't you encode a ProRes blah blah blah quicktime movie." Heard it all before.
I knew I would regret upgrading to Mountain Lion, and I do more and more each and every day as I continually find more things that it broke. Yet another reason to add to my list for downgrading to Snow Leopard. I'm up to about 30 of them. Or to abandon Final Cut for Adobe products.
Thanks and sorry for the rant, but I'm justifiably frustrated.

Update: The Apple Store in Nashua, New Hampshire replicated the issue on their own hardware, so yes, Apple did break HD-DVD playback with Mountain Lion (it does still work in Lion, they discovered). The Apple Store reported the issue to engineering, but the more people that report the issue, the more likely Apple will do something about it. Thanks Apple.

  • Did the regular 15" MBP receive the upgraded fans?

OK, we all know that the regular 13" and 15" MBP's were upadted and are just as capable, acually other than the display they are more capable and more flexible machines than the Retina MBP.  The only thing that hasn't been talked about anywhere is the fans in the regular MBP's.
I bought my wife the late 2011 13" MBP 2.4GHz, 500GB (5400RPM) MBP and threw in 16GB of RAM to replace the 4GB that came in it, since it was cheap at OWC ($167).  When I get the updated 15" MBP with 2.6GHz, 512 SSD and 8GB of RAM, I will swap them out so that I have the 16GB RAM and she has the 8GB of RAM.  Another reason I wanted the 16GB of RAM is because I will be getting into Photoshop and a bit of video editinig for fun with all the videos and photos that I take and some gaming with D III and SC II.  So that's the plan so far.
    I'm torn at the moment between the 15" Retina and Non-Retina MBP.  I love the new disply but I'm torn that Apple decided to upgrade a display while loosing other features like the Ethernet Port and SuperDrive two things we are far from not needing altogether.  Although, Apple screens all around great and the Hi-Res on the regular will do fine, the Retina MBP is such a slick and powerful machine.  The money isn't a problem and I've configured both online and I'm looking at this below;
    15" MBP (non-Retina) $2,899.00
2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    512GB Solid State Drive
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide (English)
    15" MBP (with Retina) $2,887.00
2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
    16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM
    512GB Flash Storage
    Apple USB SuperDrive
Backlit Keyboard (English) & User's Guide (English)
Apple Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter
There's only a $12 difference in my configurations and I already have the 16GB of RAM for the non-Retina if that's the one I get.  With the non-Retina I get all the connections with out all the extra cargo and fancy display.  Yeah Apple dropped the weight of the Retina but when you consider the fact that if you want the additional capabilites then you're carrying the weight around anyhow with the extra cord for ethernet and the SuperDrive, but you do not always need the either of the two anyhow.  Another thing is that you can't upgrade it after the fact but wth my configurations above I won't need to anyhow because the only thing that I'm not going with is the 768GB Flash Drive since I already have the 2TB Time Capsule for additional storage and it's where I keep most of my data anyhow other than my documents for school.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.  I know that I've done a good bit of thinking out loud here but it helps me put things in a better perspective.  I look forward to seeing your replies.

    Clinton,
Thanks for the input.  I've been on MacSales.com and if drop the SSD from Apple on the non-Retina the price drops to $2,089.00 from $2,899.00 which is almost 1K cheaper.  I can get an OWC 480GB SSD for as cheap as $579.  There are three versions though, 1. @ 3G/s with a 3 yr warranty for the price just mentioned, another at 6G/s @ $599 with a 3 yr warranty which would be the one to get, and the Pro at 6G/s @ $729 with a 5 yr warranty.  So even going with the most expensive OWC brand I could still make out about 100 bucks or so.  Not a bad call and I've already done research on puting the OS on a recovery drive so that I can install it on the new installed drive if I go that route.
Still not sure which I want to get.  I feel that I'm going to go with the relaibilty in the regular MBP though. I'm not sure about the new one yet. I'll keep reserching to pin down an answer.  I have time before I buy anyhow, I'm in no rush and plus it would take 3-4 weeks to get the Retina anyhow, so I'll just use the time wisely to get my duck in a row.
    Thanks again.

  • Why did you break my phone w/ kitkat?

Last week I loved my phone.  Since 4.4.2 update I'm about ready to throw it away.
There are so many backward steps in the kit kat update I don't know where to begin...
Someone decided customers would accept Swype substitutes.  I disagree.  Google keyboard isn't the same.  But at least I understand that one as a financial decision... others just seem dumb.
A Google engineer changes signal strength indicators from blue to white "primarily because most users didn't know what the colors meant"?  Did you really have that many people asking "why is that blue? White is harder to read at a glance.
Another color choice - on my MAXX HD you have a nice multi-color LED for notifications that was working perfectly well but you switch it to all white? What do you have against green and blue? (Yes LightFlow is a workaround, but it's a pain and shouldn't have been necessary)
I had to reset/re-init all my bluetooth devices.  I'm still not convinced they're working reliably, especially when used w/ WiFi.
Ringtones had to be reset from scratch.
Waze voice prompts are broken.  Other apps are erratic but hard to pinpoint the symptoms... but the unreliability started with the update.
Text message background color of all white for what reason? What was wrong with the old format?
Message notifications in widgets don't clear as before, requiring extra steps. In general SMS navigation has changed.  Why?
    Battery life is noticeably less.
    Who approved this rollout?
If this is an indication of where Verizon quality is headed I'm looking elsewhere for my next phone.

Swype going away has NOTHING to do with Verizon. That has to do with Nuance licensing beta software to manufacturers and then that licensing expiring. It's not up to Verizon on that deal and all dependent on Nuance and manufacturers.
If you want Swype you have to purchase a license from Nuance(play store). Don't worry about the "warning" all keyboards give that warning even preinstalled ones.

  • Did I break my home button or what?

last 2 months, I think, I was just continuously taking screenshots (maybe 4 screenshots per second) then after 3 seconds the home button just "locked"? I don't know how to describe it but let's just say that the home button clicks normal, then when I broke it it felt like it won't go down unless you put 20KGs of pressure, but now it's almost impossible to even just click it. Did it lock? or it might have just been misplaced? because I don't think it was misplaced because I don't see gaps on the sides of the home button
