DST2007 probem - seeking advice.

Hi,
We are looking at introducing JDK's - 1.3.1_19, 1.4.2_13, 1.5.0_10 in our development environment to support the latest Daylight Savings Time (DST) changes. Have some questions on this.
1. I came across this bug report for JDK - 1.3.1_19, the comments posted in the bug seem to indicate that the DST fixes for this release is partial.
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6471271
Here's the article explaining the problem -
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=790266&tstart=0
2. I came across another bug report that indicates that the fix for 1.4.2_13 is not working.
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6332148
I dont see any comments from Sun on these bugs and am left wondering wheather it is safe to download and use these releases.
3. Is there a test program/utility (not tzupdater tool) available that can verify wheather the JDK's do indeed adress the problem.
All comments welcome.
Thanks...

I am working on this issue for my company's J2EE product and am concerned about the lack of a 1.4.1 update for the DST changes. I understand that 1.4.1 is currently EOL, but the problem we are facing is the oldest branch of our product includes a piece that runs as an applet and as it's used by government clients we are sure they will be reluctant to upgrade to 1.4.2. Without a packaged version of the 1.4.1 JRE w/ the DST updates, it would be necessary for the tzupdater tool to be executed on all of the clients post install.
Has anyone else had to deal with this problem? Is there a 1.4.1 JRE available that contains the new DST changes or a way to create a deployable package?

  • Seeking advice: moving universe between systems

    Hi all,
I've been spending some time trying to work through the Business Objects documentation to try and understand what's involved in migrating a Universe from a non-SQL Server based system to a SQL Server based system.
I'm seeking advice not having used Business Objects as I am attempting to estimate the work involved for a customer who currently uses BO. I don't know whether it's just a simple exercise of changing the database connection, or whether more work is involved. I've tried to get this information through SAP formally, but not currently being a BO customer they've refused to answer any questions.
During the course of the migration of the underlying data tables, some columns in some tables have changed their data-type (e.g., from smalldatetime to datetime, or changes in length/precision). I'm also not sure if the tables have changed name: in the old system, they are named in a SQL type manner (i.e. <prefix>.<tablename>) however in SQL Server the objects will be placed in a database named <prefix> with each table being named <tablename>.
Would this potentially require a full drop of every object in the Universe, or could this exercise be achieved without having to remove and re-add any objects by saying "this object in the Universe is now this object in the database".
    Any advice welcome.
    Cheers,
    Chris...

    Hi Chris,
The universe is quite a simple tool in that it maps the sql directly to objects. So if the universe points to a table name that is no longer present, you wil get an error in the report, or when you check the integrity of the universe (tools, check integrity)
The standard formats will move accross without an issue, however it is possible to use vendor specific code in objects. So for instance I could write
    nvl(my_table.my_col, 0) in Oracle
    or
    IsNull(my_table.my_col, 0) in MS SQL.
If you objects contain these defintions then your job is going to get harder.

    Hi,
If ur good at ABAP, learn BI/BW, it is the best combination to prefer. Usaully ABAP''ers learn BW very fast( seen this practically). so go ahead & learn BI/BW.
The  BI BOOKs /Material's which is provided bySAP:

  • Seeking advice on SAP/cloud

    Hello all,
Will be doing proof-of-concept on SAP on cloud, installing ERP and seeking advice/feedback.
Based on the criteria of easier installation and faster delivery (and of course success story), what will be the recommended combination of platform (LINUX, Windows) and database (Oracle, MS SQL, MAXDB, DB2).
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Terry

There are lots of  documents in SDN and other forums which will give much better idea ... but these are my observation
Installation - Once you have gone past the access process to the cloud environment, after that you can hardly differentiate whether you are on doing a install on cloud or non-cloud. Though definately the time to get the infrastructure for install is much faster.
Windows or Linux - I would put it as windows or Unix, not sure how many providers offer other flavors of Unix apart from Linux. But obviously the Product itself to some extent will govern what you choose, as has been the case in non-cloud env.
Database - Again have seen Oracle and DB2 being mostly used. Not sure why, may be stuff like doing system refresh in 15 min ,  etc  are easier to achieve with products like Oracle and DB2.
    Regards,
    Neel
I dont have any exposure to windows on cloud. So i am not aware of specific positives it might have in cloud.

  • Seeking advice for backing up Xserve G5 w/ RAID PCI card

    Hello all!
I'm a newbie to Macs and server admin, and I have inherited the job of setting up a server at work for file storage. I'll do my best to give a concise description of our set-up - I'm looking for some advice on the last few odds and ends... mainly how we can backup the system.
We bought an Xserve G5 with an option RAID PCI card. We have 3 500GB drives in the Xserve, configured to RAID 5 (giving us effectively 1TB of storage space). We will be using the server for data storage. About 20 computers will access the server over a network; we are using an assortment of Macs and PCS.
I am seeking advice on backup systems for the server. In the event that the RAID5 fails, we don't want to lose our data. We just need a snapshot of the server; we don't need to archive data or to take the HD offsite. Our old server just used Retrospect to run incremental backups every night (with a complete clean backup once a month). Our current thought is to attach large external hard drive to our admin computer (not the server directly) and run nightly backups as before.
The major points I have are:
-Any thoughts on reliable 1 TB external drives?
-Any recommendations on software that can backup from a RAID over a network? I found info for Retrospect Server 6.0 - it seems to do what we want, but is rather pricey.
Thanks in advance for any advice! I really appreciate it!
    Xserve G5 Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Greetings-
We all started out as newbies at one time or another-no worries. That is why we are here.
I personally use the Lacie branded drives. They are sturdy and reliable. My only thoughts here are to have at least three external drives-one for today's backup, one for a backup stored securely nearby, and one to be securely stored off-site. Rotate the drives daily so that your worst-case scenario will be a catastrophe that requires you to use a three-day old backup, depending upon how old your off-site backup is. Not ideal but better than the alternative. External drives are cheap enough these days to allow you to do this at a reasonable cost. Plus it is easy enough to throw one in a briefcase and tote it home for safety (just don't lose it!)
I would stay away from Retrospect. If you search these forums you will find several instances of folks having some serious issues with the program. I use a program called Carbon Copy Cloner that does the job nicely for my basement server. There are ways to do the backups via the command line interface as well but I am not so familiar with those commands. You may have to dig a little deeper to find something that works for you.
One of the other advantages of the FW external drive is that you can share it with other users, so perhaps you can set things up to have your network backups to go to that drive. Tis a thought.
    Luck-

  • Seeking advice on moving up to HDV editing

I appreciate folks on this forum who have assisted me in the past when I’ve had questions about iMovie, editing, burning DVDs etc. Karsten, Lennart, Bengt and others from around the world have been very kind and helpful. I am now seeking advice from anyone regarding “moving up” to the HDV world of video editing.
I recently "retired" my 2003 iMac G4 800 MHz flat screen and replaced it with an iMac 2.8 GHz Intel core 2 duo with a 320 GB hardrive and 4 GB of upgraded RAM. I have a 250 GB external drive as well. I also replaced my old Sony TRV-30 digital camcorder (a great old workhorse which is still going strong after 8 years) with a Canon Vixia HV40 that has high definition recording capability (uses mini DV tape).
I had been using iMovie HD 06 to edit my video projects along with iDVD and Toast 6 to burn them to DVD. I would like to start shooting HDV video with the new Canon, edit and burn the projects to Blu Ray high definition discs. MCE Technologies (among others, I believe) offer both internal and external Blu Ray burners. I don’t believe that the internal Blu Ray burner would work in my new iMac, but I may be wrong on that. (Does anyone know the answer?)
I believe that the MCE external Blu Ray burner would work with my equipment if attached to one of the Firewire ports or possibly through one of the USB 2 ports. (there is both a 400 and 800 Firewire port on this iMac model.) I was planning to acquire Final Cut Express as the editing program with Toast 10 Pro (plus the Blu Ray plug in) to burn the edited projects.
Will this work? Is there anything I should know before I plunge “headlong” into HDV editing? Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

    I'm jealous.. wow! MY set-up..
HDV is supported by IMHD6.. just to mention that. so, HDV-editing is same as SD..
iMHD6 Export 'FullQuality' creates a file, which is HiDef too, for your Toast/BR workflow ..
    HDV creates on import (IMHD6/FCE) huuuuuge files, 40-60GBs/h .. 250 extHDD = 6h, full..
actual price for extHDD with 1TB <100€ ..
keep in mind: internal harddrive has to offer any time 10-20GBs free..
not every BR-standalone-player accepts homebrewn disks..don't be disappointed...
Toast and iDVD can burn DVDs (=which offer SD only) from HiDef projects.. no need to 'convert'.. both apps downsize automatically...
FCE has a (very) steem learning curve.. totally different to iMovie.. no one-click-only, no templates, no ready-mades.. but zillions of options, 101% control.. (simple example: ken burns with zoom-to-zil and rotation and moving out of frame...)
buy a book of FC Mastermind and AppleDiscussions-Level5 supporter *Tom Wolsky* - he's a sensei, in-depth-knowledge, hands-on (=no tech blabla), easy to read and understand.
don't start with a project, start with 'tests for the trashbin'..

  • My MacBook and my iphone - 2 Apple IDs,Diff Cloud Accounts..Seeking Advice

I know I should have been able to decode an answer to my dilemma from other posts, but I can't.  I apologize in advance and would be grateful for any advice.  I have a .mac apple ID from years past which has been the ID that I have used (and my three kids have used exhaustively) to purchase itunes apps, musics and other goodies (many, many purchases).  It is the account linked with our collective 4 family iphones (including home sharing) and the App Store, etc. When ios5 came out, I created a cloud account using that Apple ID.
I had separately created an second Apple ID for mobile me about a year ago that would permit me to use the email feature and provide me with an additional back up email from my regular provider (and a means to transfer contacts, documents, etc from the MacBook pro I use to coordinate my existence .  When I just moved from MobileMe to icloud, my macbook pro created an icloud account using that name, complete with a fair bit of generous storage for the next couple of months.  My MacBook pro will not allow me to change the Apple ID, such that my computer is now syncing with the .me account and my iphone is syncing with the .mac account.
Any thoughts on how I can resolve this?  I have tons of purchased apps and music on the .mac account, but my principal contacts, photo stream and essential docs are on the .me acct which actually has the space to handle my excessive collection. I would appreciate any ideas or thoughts and thank you for explaning what is probably fairly straightforward! I feel like I have an emerging split personality.

  • Seeking advice regarding networked attached drive

I am considering two options to share our family's EyeTV library, 1080i home videos, photos, and iTunes music over our home network of several Macs. We have one G4 Mac Mini running OS 10.4.8 (the last OS that runs Classic), but only OS 10.6.x / 10.7.x (when avail) systems will use the networked drive. I will NOT put Time Machine on the networked drive using option #1, but I might consider TM on a NAS:
    (1) AEBS with an OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro single HD enclosure + 2 or 3 GB HD.
    (2) Synology NAS, such as DS411slim or DS410 with four drives in Synology Hybrid RAID. (Synology claims to have full Time Machine compatibility; Synology owners seem to agree.)
I have done lots of reading on both options and I am aware that risks/problems exist with each approach. Option #2 will probably be about twice as expensive as #1, but it will offer much greater capacity and peace-of-mind RAID redundancy. Our home is hard-wired, and I do not plan on using WIFI often.
Future-proofing is about guesswork and hearing what people have to say. I welcome the Forum's recommendations, and any other ideas people have.

    MacHound wrote:
Yes, I hear you re: Time Machine. I actually do most of my backing up with SuperDuper because of all the TM issues. But there's something to be said for redundancy, and hourly backups do add redundancy beyond bootable backups.
Regarding the main question of (1) versus (2), do you have any advice?
Backing-up via an Airport Extreme is still "iffy" and +*not supported by Apple.+* See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). Nobody knows what may be coming, but there's no indication it will be.
A third option, which I didn't mention, is to stick to local drives only, then do wake-on-LAN when I need HD contents on another Mac. That's probably the simplest and cheapest solution.
Yes, that's the simplest and most reliable, as in the last paragraph of my previous post. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum) for setup instructions to back up laptop Macs.

  • Seeking advice - Walk-in purchase of iphone 4?

    Hi All,
I currently own the iphone 3G and when I got it, I waited in line at my local AT&T store for a couple of hours and ended up having to order it, but received it in a few days. That being said, I haven't had much too much experience with huge launches and being a walk-in customer hoping to purchase an iphone on the 24th.
I was hoping you all might have some advice about where you think I should try. The closest Apple store is 1.5 hours away, so I wasn't really planning on going there. I have a Best Buy, 2 radio shacks, 2 Walmarts, and 2 AT&T stores. I plan to call each of them on Wednesday to see if they have any idea if they'll even have phones available for walk-ins, but where would you all suggest trying to obtain a phone on the 24th? I know it's a long shot anywhere I go, but I was hoping people might have more experience or even some educated guesses about who would get more of the product? There has to be some kind of rhyme or reason, right? LOL
Thanks in advance for the help!

well AT&T stores are out of the question since they pushed back the walk in date to the 29th.

  • Consistent, long-standing performance issues -- seeking advice

I have a performance problem with my system. It's a problem that's lasted me years, spanning 3 different computers. This leads me to believe it's not the hardware, but something about my system. As I've moved from computer to computer (as well as when I've reinstalled the system), I've taken pains to skip the Migration Assistant and move over preferences and Application Support one by one, in an attempt to isolate and remove the bug. This always appears to work for a while, then inevitably it goes back to it's same, unresponsive, jittery, occasionally slow self. I'm considering getting a new computer, and I want to try to isolate this problem before I go through the process again.
Here is a list of symptoms. Scroll to the end to read what I've tried to do to fix it.
    DISAPPEARING FINDER
Once in a while, when waking from sleep, the icons on the Finder disappear. The Finder is be usable, and I can create Finder windows, but the icons aren't there. Fixed by force-restarting the Finder.
    MESSY ICON
OIAW, when waking from sleep, the mouse arrow will be replaced with what appears to be random lines and static. Easily fixed by hovering over a text box and forcing a cursor change.
    SAFARI BEACHBALL
I know Safari can be slow as a matter of course, but sometimes mine just GRINDS. I have to either force-quit it or leave it for a while for it to catch it's breath. Some common triggers are Flash embeds (no surprise), big pages, or pages with big photos. Almost always, a page with a lot of photos (like Big Picture), will be impossible to scroll smoothly.
    GARBLED MENUBAR
Occasionally, I'll look up to the menu bar to find it a garbled mess. It appears as if the menus from more than one application are overlain on top of each other. The bar is still useable, and if I click on any menu, it redraws itself properly.
    MOBILE ME IS A ************
This is probably the biggest, most consistent, easiest to replicate problem. When Mobile Me is syncing, I might as well not even try to use the computer. It seems to gobble up all memory, making everything else practically useless. I have it set to sync automatically, but I'm pretty sure I've tried hourly and daily and the same problem occurs. (Also, FWIW, I think it's syncing a lot more than it needs to -- not a lot changes from sync to sync. But I'm not sure how to prove this.)
    SLOW DOCK
If it hasn't been in use for a while, the dock will take a second or two to show (it's positioned on the bottom, hidden).
    FONT CORRUPTION
This hasn't been happening much lately, but for a while, particular base system fonts would suddenly stop working. The files were still there, and active in FontBook, but they wouldn't work in applications. I would have to remove the file from the System/Library/Fonts folder, then the system would recreate it, and it would work again. This would sometimes happen out of the blue.
The one consistently corrupt program in this respect is Google Chrome. It's never been usable -- all characters within the window frame are the weird box with a serif A in the middle. (Strangely, the text in the chrome itself -- bookmark text, tab text, etc -- works fine.
    ITUNES STUTTER
Sometimes the computer is so consumed with whatever it's doing that iTunes will stutter.
    DOCK STUTTER BOUNCE
Often when opening an app, the dock icon doesn't bounce smoothly, but rather stutters up and down.
    TRANSPARENT MENUBAR
Sometimes the background of the menubar disappears. Weirdly, the shadow remains.
    SLOW DASHBOARD
Even after the Dashboard has been loaded for the first time, it can be grindingly slow. It usually zooms into place okay, but activating an module and using it can take 10-20 seconds.
    SLOW SCROLLING
Sometimes, very rarely, the whole computer will have a scrolling seizure -- scrolling a window will become VERY unresponsive, and very stuttery when it finally does respond. Happens to all apps, and quitting the app doesn't appear to fix it. Only restarting (or logging out and in).
    COVERFLOW
Like other things, can be jumpy.
    IN SUMMARY, **** IS SLOW
Basically, sometimes everything just slows. Even the simplest thing is impossible to do, like opening a menu, or finder window, or typing -- it'll stutter and spits out my letters in big chunks.
    *--- THINGS I'VE TRIED ---*
I've added more RAM. When I went from 2GB to 3GB, things appeared to be fast again. That lasted a few days. Later, I went from 3GB to 4GB, with no noticeable change.
I've cleared out my fonts. I deactivated all fonts in FontExplorer except for a couple dozen essentials.
I've verified all fonts in FontBook and removed the offending ones. I fixed any conflicts in FontExplorer.
I've cleared the cache any number of ways, including with Cocktail. Cocktail offers a variety of configurations for cache clearing, and I've tried a bunch of them.
After doing all the above for the first time, I actually thought I had cleared out whatever ugliness was invading my system. Things were opening snappily, and Flash movies were playing smoothly. That lasted a day, and things went back to normal. I've tried it again several times since, and while I've seen some mild improvement, it's been nothing like that one miraculous time.
    *--- WHAT NEXT? ---*
I've seen Apple Store Geniuses about this a few times. It's been very frustrating. What it usually comes down to is: reinstall your system. I did it the first time they suggested it, and the problem always came back. I'm not going to do it again, because it's a major hassle, and obviously doesn't fix the problem.
The other thing they say to do is look at Activity Monitor. I have done that, but I'm not totally clear what to with the information I see, other than to quit more apps to free more memory. Here's the thing: I'm seeing no discernible difference in free memory between a 3GB system and 4GB system. Same slowness, same sliver of free memory in the pie chart.
I've done a lot of looking around online, including in this forum, and the one thing I read consistently is that you want to avoid pageouts. I look at my Activity Monitor and see gigs and gigs of pageouts. What I can't find is tips on how to reduce them.
I've been living with this for a while, because it's just on the threshold of tolerable. It comes in waves, and the times of easygoing make it easy to forget the annoying times. But I'd like to fix it at its root. If you have any advice, I'd love to hear it.
    *--- SCREENSHOTS ---*
    - The garbled menubar
    - An example of very active Activity Monitor with 3GB
    - And one with 4GB
    Thanks!

Erase the hard drive, install 10.6 from scratch, download and install the 10.6.3 vers. 1.1 Combo Updater, then allow Software Update to download and install any other additional software.
Do not yet reinstall any third-party software but take some time to test out everything, In this way you will be able to better now if some problems remain which may be indicative of hardware malfunction.
Since you say these problems have been long standings, I'm surprised you didn't downgrade to Leopard or take the computer in for repair. Letting problems go without solution tends to cause new problems and/or exacerbate existing ones.

  • Life after InfoPath - seeking advice

So we currently have a SP2010 environment where we have made extensive use of InfoPath forms. Some basic, some are centrally published with lots of code. Our new Director is hot on SharePoint Online and wants us to investigate moving to the cloud. Hoping
    to get some direction/advice here.
If we were to ignore that InfoPath is going away, and keep using it while we can, forms with code cannot be published to SharePoint online, right?
If we decide to do everything in aspx, will our devs who have worked primarily in InfoPath need to ramp up on asp.net, html, css, javascript, all without the benefit of a visual editor?
Can we use asp.net technologies like webforms or mvc in SharePoint 2013 Apps?
    Am I missing other options?
    Thanks

First piece of advice.  Don't panic.  InfoPath is guaranteed to be around for the next 10 years.  At this point Microsoft is working on several alternative products and until they announce the completion of the alternatives its too early to
stop using InfoPath if you have been using it.  The alternatives aren't ready yet. The answers to your other questions below:
If we were to ignore that InfoPath is going away, and keep using it while we can, forms with code cannot be published to SharePoint online, right?  - Correct, no code behinds for forms in SharePoint Online
If we decide to do everything in aspx, will our devs who have worked primarily in InfoPath need to ramp up on asp.net, html, css, javascript, all without the benefit of a visual editor? - For 2013 I think that is a fair statement.  If they use
Visual studio there is the ability to do a Visual Web part, which includes a visual editor, but I think you get a better result without it.
Can we use asp.net technologies like webforms or mvc in SharePoint 2013 Apps?
Yes.  Its just that Apps are basically going to be limited to client side code like javascript and won't be able to use server side code like C# code behinds (except for provider hosted apps which don't run on the SharePoint server so they can't use SharePoint
    server API anyway.)

  • Parsing XML with Java - seeking advice for method to pursue

    Hi guys
So here's the deal: I want to parse some XML from a server, get all the data I need from it, then shunt that data to the classes that need it. However, I'm really not sure what the best way of parsing the XML is.
I've just written a class for obtaining the file, and one for building a DOM from the XML file. But looking at org.w3c.dom in the Java API documentation (see HERE) I'll have to implement shedloads of interfaces to be able to take advantage of the DOM, and I don't even know a lot about it.
So am I best just writing a simple parser based on regular expressions to get the data I want? There's about 5 attributes in the XML file that I need to get - 5 for each instance of the containing element. So I don't think it'll be hard to do with regular expressions.. plus even if I did decide to implement all the DOM interfaces, the only way I'd know how to do half the stuff is with regular expressions anyway. I mean, how else would you do it? How else could you match up Nodes according to the Strings you're using for the elements, attributes etc?
I worry that a parser using regular expressions might be too slow... I'm building this as an applet to visually display information from the server. I have nothing to support those fears, I'm just not experienced enough to know whether speed would be a problem if I chose this route... I don't think it would, but really need confirmation of that suspicion being unfounded.
Any advice would be very, very welcome, as I'm tearing my hair out at the moment, unsure what to do.

Komodo wrote:But JDOM is not in the core class libraries, is it? So if I want to create an applet embedded into a website, am I able to get people to download that as well?
Sorry, I don't know anything about applets.
Komodo wrote:Everyone's advice is appreciated, but my core question remains unanswered - would using regular expressions, considering how simple and unchanging the XML files are, be a viable option in terms of speed?
Yes! I've done more than my fair share of XML processing with REs. It's not always easy. I often wish I could just use something XPath-like. But it's certainly easy to do and would probably mean that you'd have something up and running quicker than if you spent time investigating pure XML parsing approaches.

  • Considering going from late 2011 MBP to MBA. Seeking advice on performance.

I currently have a late 2011 MBP with 4GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 and am running into some performance issues. My main issue is that it takes time to switch between apps and sometimes to open a new tab in chrome. I have a lot of apps open for work purposes and I'm thinking the slowness could be due to not having enough RAM. When I look at Activity Monitor>System Memory, I see that I have about 1GB in Inactive, 1 GB in Active, and 2 GB in Wired. Then I'm seeing 5.62GB of swap used (that doesn't seem good).
I like how compact the MBAs are and am thinking of getting either the i5 or i7 with 8GB of RAM. I'm thinking that the increase in RAM as well as the flash storage would help with the type of slowness I'm seeing, but would hate to buy it only to have the same problems.
I would love to get some advice on this.

I HAD the same 2011 MBP you have, and HAVE the current Macbook AIR,....theres almost no comparison between the two. You should possibly go use one for a bit at the Apple store etc, however regarding your question "will it be a difference/ big upgrade" the answer is of course yes,....definately so.

  • Seeking advice: project sharing

For five years, I've produced a quarterly newsletter (for teh day job) that averages 28 pages. In 2014, I'm preparing to change the project by lowering print run and page count and making it monthly - so we'll be producing the same number of pages in a year, but on a radically different schedule.
To help me accomplish that, another employee will begin contributing content, including page layout. She uses our same CS5 license in the office next to mine and is comfortable but not confident (i.e. will be a full but junior partner for the first six issues while her Adobe chops catch up with her composition & design skill).
So the question, broadly, is: what advice would you give in this situation? The coworker and I have done many prjects together over the years, and I'm not at all worried about issues of ego or control. But I've been making this product myself, and have a lot of "shorthands" built in to my workflow that she doesn't necessarily have to emulate. Also, because I've answered to no one for so long, I expect some headbutting as we learn from each other - and might have use for robust version control, so we can see different principles in action on a page.
Does it make sense to break out InCopy (which we don't currently own) for such a short-distance working relationship? Is there a plug-in by which she could "check out" pages 3 and 4 from my working master, in the way that a Dreamweaver server can handle different versions of an HTML page?

Is this about Indesign or Dreamweaver?
Just wondering: so much effort for a small news letter that published only four times a year? Two people, optimised workflow, shorthands, version control?
I'm sharing my documents with a colleague who is translating them to Chinese inside Indesign. There is no other way than sending her all the INDD and footage, so she can work.
Instructions about changes have to be given. I see no way to make this more efficient and actually, there's no need to.

  • Roto Brush Performance Issues & Seeking Advice.

    Hello everyone,
First time posting in the forum, so I'll make this as painless as I can and hopefully I can get a hand in figuring this out.
Computer is a brand new Mac Book Pro 15in Retina Display.
    - 2.7ghz Intel Core i7 (quad core)
    - 16gb Ram
    - SSD HD
    - NVidia GeForce GT 650m 1024 mb.
    - OSX 10.8.3
    - After Effects 11.0.2.11
The project that I'm working on right now was shot 1080, 24fps. I cut the project in Premier and copied all of the footage to AE for keying and to ad motion graphics. The project is close to 5 minutes in length, when I noticed the project effecting the performance of my computer I created 4 smaller projects.
I'm using the rotobrush to add back in the underside of the brim, a task which, initially, I didn't expect to be such a problem.
No issues at all with keying, so I duplicated the footage, and began roto brushing the brim at full resolution. For the most part, I've been advancing by 10 frames, which I understand will take longer to propagate, however any selection after the render is completely is leaving After Effects almost completely unresponsive for a minute or two.
Not sure what exactly is going on. I just finished a project last week and used the roto brush quite a bit and had absolutely no problems!
I read every article and post I found on the roto brush tool, as well as a handful of AE Optimization articles and videos.
Not sure what else you might need to know from me, but any input or advice would be great.
Also, if there is a better way to handle adding the underside of the brim back in please let me know. I've tried a few different options, and roto brushing seemed to be the best and quickest option until this!
    Thanks a lot!
    -Joe

It's hard to say what is causing the rotobrush show down but there may be an easy work around. Try something like this:
I applied keylight to the footage, selected combined matte to give rotobrush a nice easy area to work in, then pre-composed the keyed footage and used RotoBrush on the layer to select the underside of the hat. I added a white solid behind the rotoed pre-comp and pre composed that to use as a track matte for the original footage. Keylight was also applied to the original footage but was only used to supress color. Here's the AEP. Maybe it will give you some ideas.
