E0K41UA blank screen at start up but still "runs and drives"

Troubleshooting an EOK41UA.
The owner was using the unit in class when it "just went out".
Unit boots and loads Windows.
Video card seems to work properly, i.e., I can connect an HDMI cable and work over an external monitor.
Touch functionality is still working though the screen is blank.
Looking for some way to confirm the touchscreen display is actually out, or whether the owner inadvertently turned it off somehow.

Thank you, I had forgotten about target mode. I was able to back up all of my files. I also copied some additional 50 GB of files of the disk as a stress test and the hard drive worked fine and quick (and because it was quicker than retrieving the same files from a network drive to my desktop).
I was hoping to also unpack the Applejack files on my desktop and put them back so I could run them in single user mode without running /etc/rc. However I haven't been able to get my Linux desktop to mount the iBook in Read-Write instead of Read-Only yet (I don't have access to another Mac at the moment).

  • Macbook pro: blank screen on start up? help!

my macbook pro had a blank screen on start up. I tried restarting it and nothing worked. I could hear the computer running, but nothing would show up on the screen. When I would shine a light at the screen on start up I could faintly see the apple, but after startup it would go completely black. Then, off a whim, I tried plugging it in to our tv via an HDMI cord and it shows up now on the TV but still nothing on the computer display. How do I fix this?

  • Since installing yosemite my computer/screen blacks out, but still running

Since installing yosemite last week, my computer/screen blacks out, but still running. I have since rebooted everything, started from scratch and utilizing my external drive transferred all files/apps back. Did not help, in fact it is getting worse. Computer screen blacks out every 5 min or so and have to power up again. Also, continue to get Java message updates even after all have been updated over and over again. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Pavilion p7-110c blank screen on start-up

My Pavilion. P7-1107c has a blank screen on start-up. There is a white flashing underscore mark in the upper left corner.  I have tried the f-10 keystroke recommendation with no success. Lights and fans are operating, and the cable is securely connected. There is a one-second display on the monitor of the hp logo (the hand with the building blocks) a few seconds after start-up, which immediately disappears.

    Hi,
Your PC is listed as coming with Windows 7 64bit - if this is correct, try the following.
If you don't already have one, use another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue CD.  Download the ISO from the link below.
    Windows 7 64bit
You should use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, or if you already have this, insert the CD into the PC and restart to boot from it.  Select the Repair option.
Select the 'Repair your Computer' option and follow Option 2 in the guide on the link below to run Start-up Repair – you may need to run this 2 or 3 times.
    http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html
If the above fails to help, make a note of any error messages you may get during the procedure and include them with your next post.

  • Can't update due to message saying a prior update is still running and to reboot, but I have rebooted 4 or 5 times

Can't update due to message saying a prior update is still running and to reboot, but I have rebooted at least 4 or 5 times What do I need to remove to get the install to work?
I am stuck at FireFox 3.6.18 as no update actually installs, even when I am logged in as the admin.
    i am running XP SP3
I have the update files for version 4, 6, 8, and 10. IF I can figure out the error - probably in the registry - which update should I start with

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version and delete the Firefox program folder to remove any leftover files.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 10.0.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
    *Firefox 3.6.x: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data because all profile folders will be removed.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • When i try to load certain page, the system crashed and the bottom panel states " stopped" but when I close and open firefox again,it can't and I get this message that says my firefox is still running and to open the browser i need to restart the compu

while browsing suddenly the system crashed and the bottom panel says " stopped".When closed and re-opened, I got a prompt that says firefox is still running and i have to close to open again or have to restart the computer but it doesn't work
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
    == just happened

You get message "firefox is still running" and computer restart doesn't help you. Try the advice below.
Make sure Firefox isn't running (end firefox.exe process in Task Manager or restart computer)
    Find your profile folder
    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default
find file "parent.lock" in it and delete it (the file is empty, its function is to signify to Firefox whether it's already open or not).
Then try to open Firefox again. Will it start or not? What will it say?

I installed iWork11 but the '09 versions of the software are still running--and the default. What do I need to do to get the '11 versions working?

It's very simple. If you want to use iPhoto, just let it manage things as it does. Other than that: Export from iPhoto and delete the image from iPhoto. That will remove the master and all versions.
If space is an issue... use an external disk.
Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

  • Services of 2nd instance disappearded from SQL Server 2012 Configuration Manager but still running

We recently configured multiple SQL Server 2012 R1 (two-node) clusters. Some with two instances. However, we discovered later that the Configuration Manager only lists the services of the 1st instance (the default MSSQLSERVER instance). The other named instance
is still running and can be failed over from one node to the other using Cluster Failover Manager but the services are not showing up in Configuration Manager in any of the two nodes.
Any thoughts as to why we see this odd behavior and how to fix it? We have done two instances before in SQL Server 2008 R2 but never saw this behavior.
    Thanks,
    Omer

Please see my answer above about the SQLCM version. We use the highest.
As I said before that this happens only when we have two instances running in a SQL2012 cluster. We configured 7 SQL 2012 clusters. three of them have two instances but only the services of one instance are displayed in CM. Services of the default instance
are listed in two of these clusters while services of the named instance are listed in the 3rd one.
One thing to note about these configurations is that the installer could not bring the services at the end of installation online because it did not have permission to create the computer objects in AD during setup thus we had to follow a known workaround
that involves having the domain admin fix these permissions and then we were able to add the SQL Agent Service to the cluster and bring the services online after modifying the ConfigurationState key value of each instance in the registry.
The installer account is setup as a local admin and we asked the domain admin to give it "Read All properties" and "create computer objects" in AD but for some reason it does not seem to have the ability to create these computer objects during installation
and the objects are to be pre-created and their permissions reset afterward.
I am giving this information and I am not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that SQLCM is listing the services of one instance and not the other.

Try going to Settings>Store and sign out and sign back in.
It also could be due to an Apple server problem. and yu will just have to wait and try again.

  • When I close Firefox and try to restart it, my system thinks it's still running, and I must reboot in order to start Firefox 3.6.11.

When I close Firefox and try to restart it, my system thinks it's still running, and I must reboot in order to start Firefox 3.6.11. I'm running Windows Vista and this is the only program that has this problem. Another symptom is the program does not show up in my recently used programs list nor is it in the task list once I've closed it, though Windows will not open it because it thinks it's still running.

I am also using Windows Vista 64 bit and have the same problem..what i do is instead of rebooting the computer press CTRL ALT and DELETE key. start the task manager and go to the Process tab and look for firefox .exe click on it and hit the end process tab. close that window and firefox should run... and this problem started when i upgraded to firefox 3.6.12
If anyone has a permanent solution please post.

All you need to do is wait. While Firefox appears closed, it's not. It doing house cleaning. Cleaning out cookies and cache. How long it takes depends upon how much garbage you have collected.
If you start the Task Manager and open the Process window, you will be able to see when Firefox has finished up and closed down.
If you forced Firefox to close using the task manager, then the house keeping process seems to freeze up.
Also, as you've already found out from the above link, some programs and plugins will prevent Firefox from closing properly. I've found this less common then simply being in a hurry. But you need to also consider it.
