Editing film

What the best way of editing clips using aperture or photoshop, screen shotting will take time and lower quality do you have any suggestions? Also is it possible to greenscreen and layer images in imovie?

Editing clips? Do you mean video? You can’t with Aperture (or, indeed, Photoshop). Have you considered a video editor? Like Final Cut Express. As to your other questions, have you considered posting in the iMovie forum?

    Hi Cereskit
Thanks again for the message. I've done the updates and have the App Store on my desktop. I went into it and searched for imovie but couldn't find the basic imovie, which I presume is what I'd need for editing?, rather than imovie 11 for £10.49, which is for making trailers, it seems. Also, were you saying that imovie would be free?

Can anyone help to make clear as the specific steps to take to capture, edit, sound sync to the producing of the edge numbers for the negative cutter?

Here's another thread I got with a search of this forum.

I'm sure there's more great info out there, but if you search this forum for 'pulldown' or 'film editing' or some such, you'll find tons of info in this forum.
The first thread I listed (with the book suggested by David Slater) has multiple links to sites that will give you tons of info.
    Hope that helps.

  • Capture edited film to FCPX

I have a few edited films on dv tape and I want to capture them to fcpx as a film. when I tried it appeared as separeted clips. is it possible or is there any other software to do that.
    thank you.
    Yinon

Did you also find that FCP X arranged the clips as they were chronologically shot thus jumbling up the films.
Frequently when you edit you use clips in a non-chronological order.
I had this problem which rendered my films useless.
The only solution I found was to import the films into Final Cut Express or FCP versions 1 to 7.
Any "old" editing app should be able to do the job.
On the other hand assuming that all the clips in the film are used chronologically, the fact that they are split will not cause any problem.

  • How to archive an edited film (in FCE) in FCP X

When I archive a film, edited in FCE, the first clip and sometimes also the second clip of the film is placed at the end! The other clips are corectly placed.
    How to change it?

the edited tape , with resolves, is split into clips!
That's what I was asking you. So it's not a single digitized file? This is problem with the tape recording or the playback. A continuous recording, such as printing to tape in FCE, should create a single digital video file when captured. The application is getting breaks in the playback which it's seeing as shot changes. There may in fact be a few frames missing at these points. I would suggest using a different application, maybe the QT player to capture the media.
(Not sure what resolves mean. Dissolves?)

  • Editing Film Photos and Virtual Copy Problem

I just scanned some film in and then imported it to lightroom. I am now running into a problem when I go to retouch/edit the film in photoshop. When I scan the film in it scans in as a .tiff file. I first tried to edit just the original to see if it would save back into lightroom as .psd but it didnt it saved the original tiff. I want to have two copies, the original and the edited file. So second I tried to make a virtual copy and edit that one and save it but again it saved both the virtual copy and the original file with the edits that I made. I finally tried right clicking the original file and editing with edit a copy. This finally worked I was able to have a copy and the original file unedited.
My question is if I edit this way and have a bunch of edit with copies is my picture sizes going to double? (having two copies of each photo, one edited and one original)
Or is there a way to edit a .tiff as a virtual copy and not have it save the changes to both files.
    hope this wasn't super confusing

    Thanks Sean..
Actually it did work but on the flickr side, i didn't notice until i logged on..  The Flickr side added a '2' to the virtual copy although Lightroom uses the original name/copy.  So i guess it works, just a little confusing.  I have not tweaked the virtual copy yet to see if it updates the '2' copy on Flickr or throws a wobbly instead
I used Jeffrey's plugin for sometime but eventually I decided to delete all my photos from flickr (new account anyway) and decided to go fresh with LR 3.  It works really well and any tweak i make get's republished without deleting any previous comments or data.  Jeffrey's just doesn't have that same visual impact and integration.  The LR version has a few quirks but seems stable enough for solid use...  Just need to be smart with it because pilot error can make problems.

  • Importing an Avid 6 edited film in .MOV into Adobe Premier CS6 for re-editing but codec issues!

    Hello,
My first time using Adobe Premier CS6.
I have edited a film on Avid 6 but it's far too big.
I want to import this film into Adobe Premier CS6 for re editing so I can export it as a H.264 and make it small enough to post online (currently it's 9gb)
I have tried importing it but I'm running into CODEC issues eeven though it's a .mov.  What can I do?
Please help, it's all new to me.
    Cheers,

  • What's the difference between editing film and editing video in FCP?

I see some shows on t.v. like Intervention, Cold Case Files,
and others, that I know are edited on FCP, but they look like film,
    not video.
Is there some special skill or different hardware/software necessary to edit one over the other?
    thanks

I'm guessing that you can't capture film into FCP unless
    it's transfered to video ... correct?<
Well, not exactly. You could capture film directly into FCP if you had the proper equipment. Not many people have that hardware, expensive and tedious. We pay someone to do it for us. Telecine can be delivered on tape or as digital files. One captures from tape, one ingests digital files.
It's also possible to make video look like film. But do not post that question, google it. There are hundreds of sites devoted to the discussion.

  • Editing Film in Low Light Setting

    Hi,
I have some video that was unfortunately shot with poor lighting. I am trying to determine the best way to edit this to bring out the subject's face without making the footage too grainy. What would you suggest I use in FCP6 (I have tried Color Correction and Contrast, both help only a little)? Would using Color help me at all? Thanks!
    Ben

It is rather difficult to say what filter or software would be best to use and how efficient they can be without seeing how much underexposed your images are, however, 3 way color corrector is the basic tool to start with (take a look at [this link|http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/cc_legalfcp4.html] for your own interest).
Color is of course a very good option if you have it. I would suggest to read and watch tutorials if you are not used to it. Again best result depends on many factors including how you use the tool.
Keep having a look at [kenstone's web site|http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/fcp_homepageindex.html#color] or use google (i.e. check out Nattress filters).

Just edited 20 film in FCPx all about 6 mins long all on 1 x 250gb flash drive
Now i have another 10 to do but have no room on that drive.
So i have been using my new 2tb drive to do the next 10 films with the footage on that drive, but i need elements from the first 20 films ie; graphics, common film elements etc to be added to the new 10 films.
So I have copied all the footage, events and project folders from the 20 edited films over to my 2tb drive in a separate folder - ejected the 250gb drive (as i only have 2 thunderbolt slots and one is used for a 27 inch monitor on my macbook pro)
.......my question is how do i load all of the 20 films into my project library so i can see all of the 30 films at once so i can copy and paste form one film to another - is this possible? and withlout messing up lol

// any reason, why you color your post to 'invisible' low contrasted colors?? //
    I'm confused:
by concept, there's Events and there's Projects.
Events and Projects can be internal or on any ext. drive.
You can use any Event in any Project.
… so, why is the 'location' of your files on any relevance for your Projects ??
    Or, do you want to re-import done-Projects as 'Events'? Export,Import, done… (??)
… sorry, maybe I'm just lost intranslation

  • How To Edit A Film - Transitions & Composit

    hi,
i'm a newbie at editing films. so i'd be appreciated if you could help me.
    right now the problem is:
i don't know when to use "transitions", and when to just "compositing".
    for example:
i'm editing a film i took when i was in hong kong.
so how do i "add transitions" & "compositing" SYSTEMLY.
    or
i should say: "IN WHAT KIND OF CERCUMSTANCES, i add trasition." and "in what kind of cercumstances i use compositing" to add things like, the name of the place.
    ed
ps. transition is like adding a cross dissov dipping to colors between two places.
pps. composit is like add "explanations" of a place in the film

    JhnD wrote:
.. do you know any "good" sites that teaches film editing?
your living room .. your TV shows tons of good (and not so good) editing ...
    rule is: no rules.
the laws-of-editing, as a Sergei Eisenstein proclaimed in the 20ies of last cent. are still in use - but are also widely 'broken'.
editing creates the style and tone of your piece - hasty, 'trashy' as in Skater Movies, calm, ambient as in National Geographic landscape editorials.. imagine the pic of a tree, underlaid with some gloomy chords of an orchestra or a happy flute; same tree with title 'early 19th century - hanging was usual' or 'here asked Grandpa Grandma'; an epic zoom into the tree or a 'jump cut' to a branch with some happy squirrel sitting on it .. etc.etc.
I follow a few simple rules:
    • film is 'flowing' - no rewind, no back-browsing allowed. can your audience follow you, your content, your story, your impressions...? this is essential, when adding titles: does it distract from what's happening in the pic? long enough? big enough? does it give info? or is it adding some value (s. following points)?
    • less is more - keep it short, simple, easy. do we really need this piece, this clip, this element?
    • why do you add this? - for me, all elements should have a need in my project; a title can set-up a story ('while mom slept, the elfs start their work ...'), add info ('the owner of the wreck'), can tell another story ('two years later, this area is a supermarket"); a dancing crowd is a good illustration of 'being happy' on that wedding; a blossom in the wind is a good illustration of 'a calm morning'; .. but there's no need to torture my audience with Uncle Willy's 20min speech +in toto+ ..

  • Converting Nokia N95 video for editing in Final Cut Pro?

I have some .mpeg4 videos shot with a Nokia N95 mobile phone that I want to edit in Final Cut Pro.
I read everywhere that .mpeg4 is not an "editing format".
I want to use Quicktime Pro (or Mpeg Streamclip) to convert the footage to something I can use in FCP *without degrading the original quality* but I am completely lost as to what settings I should use.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have done some test conversions but a side by side comparison in Quicktime of the original and converted footage showed the latter to be softer, less contrasty and with different colours. Not at all what I wanted.
I've posted this question on th eFCP and iMovie forums but haven't had any definitive replies. Is this really so complicated?
    Thanks in advance!

I've been using iMovie 09 with these files but because the image quality is pretty poor I need the image correction functions of FCP. I can import the .mpeg4 files to FCP OK and work with them but I seem to spend all my time rendering. This is why I began to wonder if my initial file format and sequence settings were what they should be (and I am completely lost here).
The edited film will be uploaded to blip.tv and then embedded in websites. My concern is not to degrade the quality during my workflow.

  • Career of video editing

I graduated in May of 2005 with a degree in Multimedia. I have a job as a video editor and am teaching myself for the most part because I'm in a small company. I was wondering if any of you would be able to give me any hints on what one should do to further my education in video editing/film editing to get myself to a level of television/commercials or even film. I would love any tips and words of wisdom from any one. My lofty goal is to be an editor on a feature film - just not sure of what steps to take to get there some day. Thanks!

I did it the hard way... the other guys are probably right... I started out thinking I could do my own films... and did... and failed and failed and failed until I finally got it to where I was a serviceable filmmaker.
I don't know that moving to Hollywood or NYC is the answer (that's what I did)... I think you are in luck and SOL both due to the times you live in... Luck because there are so many films being made that you could probably cut your chops on any of the zillions of films being made... if you want to be an editor... edit.
SOL because everybody and their brother think they are auteurs these days. Even if you do get to work on these films it is hard to be noticed...
I used to run a Promo and Marketing Dept at a local Fox affiliate... to me that is where you should be looking... the pay *****, but the sheer volume of stuff you do at a local TV station is worth its weight in gold.
    I hope that helps...
Now... did deep into FCP! If you know it... the other systems are fairly similar.

  • Removing original audio from a film clip! Please help

    Hi
I am trying to export a film with visuals and sound synced - I have done this within Logic however when I export it (Options>Movie>Export Audio to Movie) I am not presented with an option that allows me to remove the original audio from the film.
I have tried a couple of things and when I play the finished video back it has the new synced music track that I have produced however the original sounds from the pre edited film are present upon playback!
Can someone please tell me how to get rid of these original sounds - It would be greatly appreciated : )
    All te best,
    Al

if you export, after making your settings, a new box will appear and will ask you, which original audio from the movie you like to keep on the new movie. Just deselect and go on. New video should be without old sounds.

  • Edit with windows of apple?

I must buy a new computer. I hear many problems from Windowusers who edit films with Adobe. Should I buy an Apple,
or can I take the risk and continue with Windows? Where is the point in Windows that I should give special attention?
    Thanks.

I am strictly an Elements Windows user.
Just a quick reply for now.
From the point of view of Premiere Elements, although Premiere Elements Windows and Mac are very similar, there are those differences. It seems to me that  Premiere Elements Mac typically comes out on the short side. Note the Windows Only in several of the effects and such. One example...no Chroma Key and no Blue Screen or Green Screen Key, but there are workarounds. Check out Steve Grisetti thread on that. He suggests Videomerge as the substitute in this case
    http://www.muvipix.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=100&t=11271
I have found the Difference Matte under keying can be a substitute for Chroma Key, Blue Screen or Green Screen. More on that if interested.
On the plus side of things for Premiere Elements 11 on Mac 64 bit, the program is a 64 bit application.
I have had several Premiere Elements versions, all on Windows, and all continue to perform well.
