Editing multiple takes

Does anyone know of a tutorial on working with multiple takes? I can't seem to find anything in the manual or here in the discussion group.
I have several takes that I would like to pick and choose from, but I can only get one of them to play at a time. I thought this was a simple process with the marquee tool. But am having no luck.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi,
I guess you mean Help > Logic Express 8 User Manual, page 391 (Creating Comps).
Here you'll find the explanantion of how you can take the best parts out of multiple takes.
Note that this only works on takes you recorded on one track. So, if you recorded your different takes on different tracks, they won't appear in this way, and you'll need to things the old fashioned way.

Jaap

  • Clip Management - Difficult To Manage Multiple Clips of Multiple "Takes"

I just switched from iMovie and am editing multiple "takes" from a shoot I did for a commercial. I am finding it very difficult to keep track of which shots I like best. I am using detailed naming, but that is not the issue. When I drop a clip from the Project section into the Timeline I am finding it very tedious to determine which clips in the Project section have already been dropped into the Timeline. Did I use it already; didn't I? Other than Labels, or the checkbox for the Good collumn, is there a less tedious way for me to clearly see what is already used from the Project section? Is there a way to have them disappear from the Project section once I drop them into the Timeline? I guess I could drag everything into the Timeline and then just do all the edits by deleting what I don't want, but that seems to defeat the purpose of the Source section.
    Thanks,
    Eric

    > Did I use it already; didn't I
There are a number of ways. Right click on a clip and say "Reveal in project" it will show you where the clip is in a bin.
More importantly each clip in a bin shows you on the top left if it is in use. Video clips will display a film strip and audio files display a little speaker.
    Very easy.
Or you could click on "remove unused clips".

  • Multiple Take Edits & Trouble Shooting

I have a few problems with Logic's take use.
For starters, I recorded drums on multiple takes using multiple mics and tracks. I would like to edit all the tracks for the drums at the same time. I cant figure it out, as right now I have to do one track at a time for a 12 track drum kit.
Next on the list is that sometimes I will randomly, without pattern, loose comp folders. First they will turn into a little blip, and then I loose them completely. In order to get them back, I would have to drag the audio files back from the library. However, I can't or don't know how to create take folders from already recorded audio.
Its all quite annoying for me and have stopped mixing because of it. Can anyone please help me with my troubles?
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,
You need to enable the group function on those 12 tracks of drums. Drag your mouse across all 12 tracks in the mixer, and then in the group window, select a new group. Then, while clicking and holding over the group window, open "group settings", and make sure "Region Selection (Edit)" is enabled.
Now, whenever you select and edit any region in a track, assigned to that group, all other tracks assigned to that group will follow.
I've never created a take folder after the fact, but I believe it's a simple matter of selecting the tracks you wish to include, and then under the Arrange pages mini "Regions" menu, select "Pack Take Folder". If I'm wrong on that, someone please correct me...
    Hope that helps.

    Hi
    Wrong..
To assign tracks to a group, click in the dark gray box just above the automation (Read/Write/Off etc) on a channel strip, and select the group number you wish to use. The first tim eyou assign a group, the Group Setting swindow will appear automatically, thereafter you need to click on the group area and choose 'Open Group Settings'.
Make sure that you have turned off Group Clutch (this disables all Groups)

  • Switching between multiple takes?

    Hi,
I am having a problem. I am recording multiple passes of drum tracks on top of each other. Is there any way to switch between them, so I can compare? I cannot figure this out. Any help? Thanks.

I'll second mr loops suggestion of using folders. It's absolutely the best way to take advantage of the multiple tracks in Logic, while maintaining some form of organization.
Especially when a typical drum tracking session can range from 8 to as many as 16 (or God forbid more) tracks, per take.
I like to throw take one into a folder, name it take 1, and even color code the folder. So now, all the drum tracks within that folder have taken on that color.
Record take 2, pack those tracks into a folder, name it "Take 2", and color that folder something different.
After you have recorded all your takes (for sanity's sake, let's say there's 4 takes). You can then make cuts on all those folders, over the various sections of the song, and place all the different sections of the different takes into a "Master Folder".
When you find the various sections from the various takes that you want to use, simply merge that master folder. Then, when you double click into that folder, you'll see all the various colored tracks, from the multiple takes, that were used to make the final comp.
From within this folder, you can add your cross fades, and fine tune your edit points.
Lastly, when your satisfied with it all, you can utilize the "Export All Tracks as Audio Files" function. Since you're doing this from within the folder, only those tracks will be exported.
You then have continuous audio files to bring back into the song, if you prefer to work that way. You can always keep the original folder takes around, should you later decide to re-address a section.

  • Can't fade audio region with multiple takes

Audio track: I have some sections of a song with a single vocal take on the track (individual audio regions), and others with multiple takes. On the single takes, I can use the crossfade tool, no problem.
On the sections where there are multiple takes and a few edits, I cannot fade. I drag the fade tool at the front of this region and it does not fade. In fact, the highlight color is green as opposed to blue (when it works on individual, single-take regions).
How do I use the fade tool on an audio track where there are multiple takes?
(Please don't tell me I have to bounce this section of audio and re-import it...)
(There is nothing in the manual on this. I checked: pages 343-345 discuss fades in this regard but there is no mention of it not working for a multiple take audio region.)

You don't need to bounce the track, but you do need to collapse the takes into a single track. Do your comping until you have the track you want, then use the little menu button at the end of the track to fold everything into a single track (I forget the correct terminology, but it's pretty obvious when you open the menu), then fade to your heart's content.

  • Editing Multiple Text layers in Photoshop CC

    Hi,
I have a problem when tyring ot edit multiple text layers and it's really a big problem as it crops up with virtually every design I do (websites, games apps...)
In previous versions of PS, you could select multiple text layers and edit them in bulk, so for exmaple, select a number of text layers, then change their font size (to say 20pt)... done.
However, with CC, there seems to be some odd 'ratio' editing goign on - if  I select multiple text layers of different size and edit them (to all be 20pt, for example), it seems to just 'add' 20pt to what ever font size the individual layers were
It's a real issue/pain for me (and I suspect many others)
Please is there a fix or a way to switch off this 'feature'?
So to clarrify, I want to edit multiple (often different) text layers in one go to be the same font size... like I used to be able to.
    Thanks.

The last few times we saw this, it was due to a bug in a video card driver.
Please update your video card driver from the GPU maker's website.

  • How can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

how can I edit multiple clips with different frame rates on the same timeline

You do not want to edit material from different frame rates on one timeline. You CAN do this, but it is a very bad idea - and this is why.
Once you establish the sequence frame rate - lets say it is PAL material at 25fps, any material that you drop into the sequence other than 25 fps will have to be changed to play at 25 fps. If the material you add is NTSC (29.97), FCP will DROP 5 frames per sec to bring the frame rate down to 25 fps. Which 5 get thrown away? Every 6th one. This yields a funky cadence that becomes even more complex as as there are also interlaced fields (DV/NTSC is an interlaced format). Oh, and by the way, the image sizes are different as well. DV/PAL has 576 lines of resolution and DV/NTSC has 480. FCP has to scale up the NTSC to fit the PAL frame.
You do not want FCP adjusting these things on the fly. You want to do a thoughtful (and time consuming) conversion so that you end up with all your material in one format with the best possible image from the conversion process. Compressor can do an adequate job with Frame Controls turned on. The Natress Standards Conversion FCP plugin is another way to go. A third option is to find a post house that can do the conversion for you using a hardware based process.
The good news is, once everything is in the same format, editing it will be painless and the output process very quick.
Whatever frame rate/ image size you select, I'd suggest using ProRes for the codec. It is 4:2:2 color and will withstand color correction and composting with much more grace than any variant of DV based codecs.
    Have fun.

  • How to get multiple takes on one track?

Using the latest version of GarageBand, how can I get multiple takes of a vocal, for example, on one track and then select the best one?

  • Multiple takes on the same track, fading from one take to another

Isn't there a way to record multiple takes on the same track and fade the takes together?  In an old version of Garage Band, you used to be able to put two takes one on top of the other in the same track and fade them together.  Now, the track just cuts and there's no fading to the next one.  It's so cheesy this way; all live instruments need two tracks, one for mess-ups. I called up Apple Care but the guy couldn't find a solution.  If this is the way it is now, it's very cheap.  I mainly bought the Mac because of Garage Band, the Garage Band of old; has it been dumbed down now so that musicians are forced to spend even more money to upgrade to the next level program?  I wouldn't have bought the Mac but instead stuck with Mixcraft on PC, which has ease of use and cost only $80.  Please say there is a way to fade from one take to the next on the same track without cutting off one take abruptly.  Otherwise I have been duped by Apple.

    Sorrry dude, didn't happen.
I'm guessing you used Apple Soundtrack - sounds a lot like what you're describing.
Garageband, incidentally, has only added features version to version.

I edit multiple regions in one Piano Roll window at the same time. (It is very handy way of editing especially in huge orchestra projects.)
I can see midi contents of all selected regions in Piano Roll at the same time.
    1) But how to choose certain one region of many selected to edit it?
    2) And how to edit all at once?
Hope the questions are clear enough.

First of all, the Piano Roll has two mechansim, of what it is displaying.
Selected Track: This displays all the Regions that you select in the Tracks Window
One Track: Selecting one Region in the Track Area displays all the Regions of tha tTrack in the Piano Roll. If you select multiple Regions in the Tracks Window, then the last selected Regions counts.
Whatever Regions are now displayed in the Piano Roll Editor can be edited. Select the MIDI Events and apply the command.
You can also apply edits directly to the selected Regions in the Tracks Window.
I explain all those little details in my graphically enhanced manuals ("Logic Pro X - How it Works")
One thing to be clear about:
Tracks Window: Any edit is applied to the selected Regions
Piano Roll Editor: Ay edit is applied to the selected Events
    Hope that helps

Oops , my body got put into the title sorry.   Anyway so when doing live recording and multiple takes of all tracks is there a way to switch between takes globally instead of switching them one by one?

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Trouble with editing multiple frames

    Hi guys,
I'm new to CS4 - learnt my flash many years ago on Flash 5. So anyway I'm trying to get used to the new Motion Tween function and having a few problems.
I've created a simple animation where an object fades in, stays put for a moment and then fades out (one motion tween with 4 keyframes). I now want to resize the movie clip across all of these keyframes cos I got it wrong to start with.
So I click 'Edit Multiple Frames' (everything disappears but that's for another question), drag the onion thingy across the timeline and select the frames on the layer I want to edit. I then click on the free transform tool and drag the invisible movie clip (you can see the outline!) to make it larger.
Result? Well it seems to scale the first frame, but the others are all left at the original scale. Hence animation now shows object fading in whilst getting smaller etc. etc.
There must be an easy way to do this. I've tried the motion editor but you have to do it keyframe by keyframe. Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Ben

Modifying an entire animation with motion tweens is not as easy as it used to be.
Here's the best answer you are probably going to get.
    from : http://flashthusiast.com/2009/10/06/scaling-and-moving-new-motion-tweens-in-flash-cs4/
Scaling an entire animation that does have Scale X or Scale Y animated.
If you have previously scaled anything in the tween, doing this is applied to the first keyframe and the tween would animate to the earlier scaling (the auto-keyframing feature can be a detriment in this situation, especially when it comes to scaling due to the percentages being reset - for this reason Motion Presets also won’t help). In this situation, I recommend scaling using the Motion editor:
    1. Go to the Scale X and Y properties in the Motion Editor.
    2. Press the Alt key while dragging the curve in each graph up and down. This scales the entire scale animation at the same time (same as edit multiple keyframes).
    3. If you need to proportionally scale the motion path for the tween as well, select the path on the Stage and use Free Transform or enter a new value in the Transform panel.
I have had success with the above method, but from what I can tell you can only do one property at a time on one object at a time. So it is an awful amount of work.
As for step 2: while dragging the whole curve it seems the property value is very reluctant to snap to whole integers and I often see values like 200.35%.
Same thing applies for dragging property keyframes up and down in the motion editor. Is there a way to get nice clean numbers? I I want to scale something by 50% I don't want 49.83% I find myself often keying in these values by hand.
For me even though scale X and scale Y are "linked / locked / contstrained" It seems I get mixed results with this feature. Changing scaleX doesn't always change scaleY

  • Some Multiple Takes are now Empty

I did 14 multiple takes in a 8 measure break area. I copied the track so I could copy those takes and used the best beginning, middle and end from 3 of them, splitting the break accordingly. Everything played perfect. Then I moved all the snippets to the one mail track and had 3 peices from takes 2, 6, and 9. When I played the entire song, only take 2 played and the the sound went off. The takes are still there, available 1-10 in each section, but only 1 and 2 have audio. This feels really "buggy" to me. nothing was deleted and because they are still on the list, the audio should be there. Could not find anything helpful in the Show Package Contents of the songs. I thought maybe all the takes would be in there and I could import. HUGE thanks for any help... I could find nothing on the forum or Google about this possibly bug.

Restated this problem in "Multi-Take Cycling Audio Missing Revisited..." post. Please respond there!
