EMET 3.0 to 4.1 Upgrade results in notifier bug on reboot

I am testing upgrading our enterprise environment, which is currently on 3.0 to 4.1.  After installing the product with a silent install from the below directory:
waithidden msiexec.exe /i "c:\windows\temp\EMET\EMET Setup.msi" /qn /norestart
The installation works as expected, however, a bug remains: upon restarting the workstation, a Windows warning pops up briefly, indicating the "EMET Notifier has stopped working". This quickly goes away and from all appearances the notifier starts
working.
The problem appears to be a remnant file left over from the installation process.  EMET 4.1 installs itself to \Program Files (x86)\EMET 4.1, and removes most of the files from EMET 3.0, which were located in \Program Files (x86)\EMET\. However, the
following files remain:
\EMET\Deployment
\EMET\DevExpress.XtraBars.v10.1.DLL
\EMET\Emet User's Guide.pdf
\EMET\EMET_notifier.exe
My question: why are these old files still on the root? It appears the issue is stemming from the old EMET_Notifier.exe being shut down and superseded by 4.1 - is this the case? I am looking for a transparent enterprise wide install, and would like to know
what part of the installation and I performing incorrectly that is responsible for the error message. Thanks.
Also: checking MSCONFIG, I see there is an entry there to run EMET_Notifier.exe from the old directory. I have deleted the entire directory and disabled the startup item, and 4.1 seems to be running normally.

Thank you for the response, but I'm not sure it gets me any further.
I've read the User Guide, but it doesn't make sense to me why deployment through SCCM does not require the "emet_conf --refresh" command while deployment through GPO does.  Both of them just install the .msi and apply a set of registry entries.
Why would the programmers have it write to the registry but then ignore those settings?  What other program does that?  Now, if the manual said to either run that command or reboot, it would make sense.
I must also emphasise that we are not issuing the "emet_conf --refresh" command  when v3.0 is being deployed here.  It's not in any GPO, and we have new systems picking up EMET 3.0 all the time.  Running the "emet_conf
--list" command on them returns exactly the protection profile we have requested --
emet_conf --refresh NOT required.
Note that the last line of what you quoted indicates that the "emet_conf --delete_all" line you also mention will not work for the GPO settings that were applied when EMET v3.0 was deployed.
The immediate problem/question right now is how do I remove the EMET 3.0 settings that were pushed via GPO?  EMET 4.1 is deployed along with the ADMX for v4.1, but the protection profile reflected in the machines that have picked the new version up
are the settings that were for v3.0.  They don't seem to be picking up the v4.1 settings and they aren't recognized by the v4.1 ADMX:
The bigger-picture problem is that the documentation on deployment appears to be incorrect (or poorly phrased) and there is no documentation on how to upgrade via GPO.  It would be mighty nice if someone "official" (maybe from the EMET development/testing
team) were helping here!

setup problem, windows xp, firefox upgrade to 4 and asked to reboot but did not progress. keeps asking to restart even if I try to remove

    Hi marsano,
Usually the only reason it will ask you to reboot is if there is a file that must be modified that the updater doesn't currently have access to. You should try running the Firefox program once as Administrator:
    * Right-click the icon and choose ''Run as Administrator''
If that doesn't help then do a clean reinstall.
    # Download a fresh copy of Firefox from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/fx/ Mozilla download page] and save the file to the desktop.
    # [[Uninstalling Firefox|Uninstall]] your current version of Firefox and remove the Firefox program folder before running the new installer.
    # Run installer
Remember that you don't want to remove personal data when uninstalling. That way you'll still have your personal information.
    Hopefully this helps!

I have to keep turning on an off the wi-fi connection to connect to my network after system shutdown with mountain lion, I did not have to do this with 10.6.8 before I upgraded, is there a bug fix in the works?

    Many have posted this fix:
Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver > Computer Sleep ... set to anything greater than the 15 min. default setting.

During an upgrade, power was interrupted and when rebooting, the chime sounded, but screen remained gray.

What version of OSX is it?
    If it's 10.7 or higher...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
If that doesn't help Reinstall the OS.

  • ITunes Upgrade results in no access to ITunes Store

I've recently downloaded the latest version of Itunes (9.2.1.5) as since doing so I cannot access the ITunes Store. Prior to downloading this laterst version, I had no trouble with access. I've tried deleting the download and re-installing it, and I've tried just reinstalling it to "repair" any damaged or fragmented files. Nothing helps. I've tried rebooting, I've tried closing Itunes and re-opening, and I've tried clicking on Podcasts and then on Itunes Store. Again, nothing helps. The error I get is:
"ITunes could not connect to the Itunes Store. Network Connection timed out."
I ran the diagnostic and my connection to the internet was fine, the only red line failure I got was:
"Secure link to Itunes Store failed."
Everything else was fine. Again, I've never had this problem on this machine with any previous downloads.
I performed the download Saturday evening, so I thought that maybe Itunes Store was off line for maintenance or some other reason. But, at mid-day on Sunday, I'm still having the same issue, so I doubt it is the store. I've tried everything I can find on-line, and the bottom line is, nothing lets me have access to the Store.
In downloading the newer version of Itunes, I wasn't able to access it by opening the Itunes application. When I opened Itunes, I would get the dialogue box asking if I wanted to download the latest version of Itunes. When I clicked on the response to download the latest version, the dialogue box disappeared, but nothing was downloaded. So, I went to the Itunes webpage and downloaded from there.
I was doing other things on the computer while Itunes downloaded the new version, and it could have sat waiting for a response for some time. But, I had an active connection to the internet the whole time, and have not been without access since.
Basically, I'd like to know how to regain access to the Itunes Store with this latest version of Itunes. As a fallback, I'd like to revert back to my latest version that worked fine.
I'd be grateful for any help you can offer.
These are my system specs and the results of the last diagnostic.

Are you running any of Symantec's (Norton) or McAfee's Internet security products or anything similar, or an antivirus/antispyware application? There have been reports that some such utilities treat an upgrade to iTunes as a new application and can block the application from connecting. So you have to go in and reset the utility to allow iTunes. The same thing can happen if you upgrade the security product (this has particularly been a problem with recent McAfee upgrades).
Check the settings for your utility. If iTunes is still listed, remove and re-enable the exception for iTunes. Consult your utility's documentation for the appropriate procedure. If you have Norton, you can find instructions for that utility on Symantec's web page for iTunes. You may also need to check the built-in Windows firewall as well.
    Hope this helps.

  • Windows 8 HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx Upgrade results in black screen after intallation finalizes.

I have a 2011 HP Pavilion dv7-4285dx with Windows 7 64 bit Home premium installed.  The notebook/laptop has a AMD Radeon HD 6300M series display adapter with driver version 9.2.2.0 dated 9/27/2012 and an ATI technologies Intel HD Graphics display adapter with driver version 8.7771.1.0.  The notebook/laptop has not had a hardware upgrade and contiains the orignal factory OS. BIOS is current to latest available.
The issue I had while upgrading to Windows 8 is after the install finalizes (settings and preferences are entered) and the system boots to the tiles screen, the display works fine.  Clicking to the desktop works only for a few moments before the screen goes dark. Pressing the power button and/or closing/opening the lid results in at times a black screen (no power to the screen) or black screen (power to the screen) or a black screen where only the mouse pointer is visible and moves around the screen.  Restarting the computer results in a repeat of the issue at times while other times it will boot directly to what appears to be the windows desktop. You can interact with the file folder icon on the task bar as well as internet explorer, and you can get the charms bar and tile screen. Any attempt to open computer management or any control panel or task manager will open the window as an icon on the task bar.  You can mouseover the icon to "preview" a small version of the window but you can not click on it to maximize.
    I attempted the following workarounds:
    1) Clean install of Windows 8: Installs but fails with same result as above
Refresh PC from windows 8 rescue media: Works slightly longer until AMD driver fails and then reverts to situation above.
    2) Uninstalling all display adapters (via computer management) and then upgrading to Windows 8: Results in microsoft drivers getting installed, works much as refresh above until AMD driver fails and then reverts to above situation.
    3) In Scenarios 1 and 2,  I also tried to use windows update within Win8 to update the drivers there are updated MS drivers available ,(dated as late as 10/27/2012) but intalling those drivers also resulted in a failure of the adapter within a short period of time as did NOT updating the drivers.
    4) Disabling display adapters and then restarting:  Results in a BSOD (Blue Screen) IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop: 0x0000000A error during boot as the OS runs into trouble with the driver before Windows 7 boots.  This happens if one or both drivers are disabled.
    5) Disabling display adapters before in-place upgrade to Windows 8 results in the Windows 8 equivalent of a BSOD and results in the system shutting down and then reverting to Windows 7.
Through research, I determined some ppl had luck connecting another monitor/HD TV through VGA/HDMI and then using the function-screen button to switch, with my system this resulted in the same issue displayed on the TV/Monitor. There are also updates to ATI and Catalyst center available including drivers and installing these do not remedy the issue. Intel was checked and there are no drivers available as HP uses a "custom" driver for intel.  Attempting to install any of these Intel drivers will result in a fail with a compatiblity error.
Windows 8 has no safe mode ability from the windows 8 rescue media disk, you cannot F-8 as you could in the preview. Safe mode must be reached via charms, settings, startup and then selecting safe mode as a boot option, which is not available as the display adapter malfunctions.  In those scenarios where I was able to get a windows desktop to boot up as in the first paragaph I can get to the restart settings via charms, but clicking to bring up the restart menu requires another window to open which is only visible as a "preview" on the windows task bar.
if you are going to attempt to try any of these,
    1) Use a third party software to image your pre-win 8 upgrade system that you can boot into from USB or CD;
    2) Before starting the process, disable the UAC prompt and remove any passwords from logon, as those things will require you to interact with the OS and you will not be able to do this when the adapters fail.  The screen will shadow out as it usually does but the prompt will not be viewable.
    3) Create an ISO image of the Win8 install media and write down the product key. If you are able to get a successful boot, before the drivers fail, create a Windows 8 rescue media disk.
I spoke with HP tech support this morning (10/29/2012) they are aware of the issues and they lie with the display adapters.  They are working toward a solutuion but there are none available at this time and no date when they will be available.  They recommend checking the support website and having the web page autoscan your PC as the drivers will show there when they are posted and they will be installable from Windows 7 so there will be no issue with upgrading to Windows 8.  Bottom line, do not upgrade to Windows 8 at this time.
MS Tech support escalation tier reps also informed me there is no present workaround available.
Hope this helps and saves somebody some time!

My laptop sat at BestBuy from Friday night until today (10-31-12)! They couldn't figure out how to fix the problem so I finally told them to revert my latop back to Windows 7! I hope HP reads these and will hurry up and make the updates needed so that I can run Windows 8 on my Laptop! I just bought mine in July of last year there is nothing wrong with it and after dropping about $1200.00 for my dv7-4285dx along with the Best Buy Geek Squad package I do not feel like having to drop more money into another laptop!! PLEASE HURRY AND FIX THIS I DIDN"T DROP $69.99 plus tx to not be able to use Windows 8! Even before I did the upgrade I had the GEEk Squad check to make sure I could make the upgrade and was told this laptop well surpasses the required minium to run Windows 8!!!!!!

  • IOS 6 upgrade results in empty iPhoto thumbnails on iPad

After upgrading to iOS 6, many of the thumbnails from iPhoto for Events and Faces were blank.  After restoring twice without good results I finally erased everything and setup the iPad as a new iPad.  Of course this meant redownloading and organizing everything.  It improved the iPhoto results...the Events seem to be okay, but some of the Faces are still missing and some are blank.  This is a significant loss since I use Faces a lot to share with family and friends.  What else can I do?

Same issue. But my iPhone 4 does it as well. Only thing is with my iPhone it maintains a persistent 3G connection so at least I'm getting my messages as they arrive. But if I relied solely on WiFi  and my device was in sleep mode, I wouldn't get any notifications.
On my iPad 2 I've tried forgetting the network, renew lease, rebooted, airplane mode etc. Nothing works.
It's not crippling my device but it's really annoying and it's not the way it should behave.

  • IPhoto 9.4.1 and Aperture upgrade results in spinning gear that does not stop.

After installing the most recent bundled upgrade for iPhoto and Aperture and responding "continue" to the question I have a spinning gear which has been spinning for more than ten (yes ten) hours.
I have successfully closed both programs but wonder how to proceeed.  I am running Mountain Lion including the most recent update last week.  My photo library is on an external hard drive due to its size.  My guess is because because I have updated both iPhoto and Aperture the "necessary retagging" that results in the spining gear (not pin wheel) is extensive.  Am I correct that Aperture and iPhot share a common photo library of photos?
Any suggestions - work arounds - to resolve this issue would be greatly apprecated.

No, Aperture and iPhoto do not share a common library unless you tell them to.
    iPhoto:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • MIFI 2200 Upgrade resulted in seemingly dead device

In attempting to activate a mifi2200, after plugging it it to my laptop with a usb cable, it trigged an update download and install, and before it finished it seemed to stall and the end result is a device that no longer lights up or seems to work at all.  When I plug it in with the USB cable there's some sort of recognition on my laptop - it launches the 'installing device driver' window and then seems to attempt to configure it, the bar goes back and forth for a while, and then the window disappears.  Is there any hope for my device, or did the upgrade kill it?  I've tried all kinds of troubleshooting, but nothing has worked.  I only have a glimmer of hope since it does get recognized by something when it's plugged in, but isn't recognized by the VZ Access Manager software or my laptop as an attached device and doesn't light up.

  • Line upgrade resulted in no change at all to downl...

Hi first post and by no means Tech savvy so please bear with me.
I recently received email from retail.migration stating that my line was being upgraded 20mbps and then that upgrade was complete. But from all I can gather there has been no change at all to either my download or upload speeds?
Prior to the upgrade my hub was sync'd to a max download speed of 3776Kbps & upload of 448Kbps. Now after the change BT line check still results in an estimated download speed of 3.5Mbps as it did prior to upgrade and having checked my hub settings it is still sync'd at the 3776Kbps and 448Kbps as it has done for the last 3 years or so?
My questionis, is it possible that the upgrade can have no affect at all? I was under no illusions that I would reach the Broadband nirvana of 20Mbps but was hoping for a significant increase of say 50% or so??
Also if this is the major upgrade for the next few years are their any alternatives or options I have to obtain a faster service?
Thanks for any insight anyone can offer me on this subject. And apologies for the length of the post.

    Some discussion on this here
and you might like to look at Sam Knows
How 21CN will affect your existing phone and internet services
Put simply, 21CN will have no immediate effect on any end users. 21CN focuses on the core of BT's network - it makes no changes to your phone line, nor does it require you to change any equipment in your home (e.g. phone, ADSL modem/router, wireless equipment).
The services that are being migrated on to the 21CN network (such as the phone system, IPStream broadband connections, and ISDN connections) will experience a few minutes downtime on the night of the migration. Beyond that, service should be indistinguishable from present.

  • Leopard upgrade results in blue screen

Finally going to make the jump from 10.3.9 to 10.5. Unfortunately, after running the Leopard disk all I can get is a blue screen.
Two pertinent points that may have some bearing on this dilemma:
    1. My onboard super drive isn't working so I'm using an external DVD drive.
    2. At the conclusion of attempting to install Leopard (and it said installation failed due to a poor disc), I selected the HD for restart.
I've tried restarting both with the Leopard disc in the external drive, and with the drive unattached. I've also tried holding down the C key.
I have a 320GB replacement drive that was going to be the second step of my upgrade.
Do I have to remove the onboard drive, place it in an external casing, put in my new 320 GB drive and then be able to access the data on the old HD?
Or is there (hopefully) a simpler solution?
    Thanks for any help.
    Merry Christmas.

if you get a blue screen with the mouse pointer, try booting in safe mode and restarting after it boots: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455

    Kindly suggest.

    Hi ppl,
    The problem has been resolved.
As i said, problem wasnt with the upgrade, but came thereafter, functional team faced issues while switching between the windows.
Problem was with the Gui level, it needed to be upgraded too after the kernel patch upgrade.
Thanks a lot for putting your thoughts.

  • Upgrade results in diminished battery life

you recently upgraded software on my phone and my wife's phone. Since that time the phone gets very hot and the battery life has been cut in half. I read your response to another unhappy user in which he was told to go to the Verizon store. I did that and was told that I could either upgrade my phone or try a hard reset which would wipe out my data and my apps. This is obviously a problem with the upgrade, since I am not the only one having this problem. I would expect a patch to be sent out immediately to fix the problem.

Been suffering long enough after the KitKat upgrade.  Figured it was time to post.
1).  Phone runs hot - my theory is that it's struggling to find/keep LTE and cycling too much on the network
2).  Battery life is horrible now.  Used to end the day after normal use at 45% remaining, now recharging by mid-day
3).  Text messages sometimes take up to 10 minutes to send
4).  Random slowdowns - too many to really list, one app or another will freeze, not connect.  I realize this can be an app issue, but still - a real drag.
Will not do a hard reset - I would rather pay out my contract and go to another carrier, seriously.  Battery usage shows that Android System is taking up most of the juice - 24% usually.  The phone worked great at one point, now it's junk.
For real, do I have to go to a Windows phone?  Is that the life lesson here?

  • Upgrade results in loss of preferences and Update Centre paths

I have just upgraded to EA7. Having started to use SqlDev in earnest I had changed some preference settings. So I checked the ReadMe and was disappointed to find that it's still not possible to export preferences, What the document didn't say, but ought to, is that any links we've put in the Update Centre will also get lost. This is annoying. I hadn't bookmarked the extension sites because I thought the Update Centre was tracking them
I must admit to being a bit bemused as to why we can export connections but not other kinds of configuration data. Doesn't this annoy you guys too?
    Cheers, APC

It is very annoying, but it also is not a production product yet. Since development is still occurring on it, I would assume that the structure of the configuration files are still changing.
The big question is once SQL Developer is production, will they retain preference settings during upgrades? One issue I have is I cannot get the "check for upgrade" to work through my firewall. So will the upgrade guidelines document what configuration files to retain to keep your preferences when doing a fresh install?
Please do not rely on everyone using the upgrade center for upgrades.
    Mike
