Error code 1604

I keep getting Error code 1604 when trying to restore my Ipod Touch (keeps entering restore mode. never jailbroken)
Ive checked all my USB ports they are all 2.0 and all have up to date driver software. Does anyone have any other suggestions for this?
I have also tried updating Windows, and Itunes, shutting down my computer, creating a new user account, stopping the software from running and restarting it.
I am ready to throw the thing through the wall.
I can send it in for repairs but cannot call apple for support

This may help:
"Error 1604: This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, uninstalling and reinstalling USB ports, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections, device not recognized properly, computer won't recognize a FireWire or USB device). If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the USB 30-pin dock-connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for error 1604.
When prompted, click OK.
Close and re-open iTunes while iPhone remains connected.
iPhone should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection."

  • Iphone 3G ... error code 1604

I was trying to update my iphone to the new software and it got interrupted somehow... Anyways itunes told me to restore the iphone, but when I started the restore it wouldn't go further than preparing the iphone for restore. Then it just stops and says the error code 1604.
I've updated my itunes, my computer is upto date as far as I know, I've reset the computer, tried a different USB port, tried 2 other computers, and tried holding the home button when I plugged the USB cord into the computer. I've tried everything that I can find on the internet pretty much and I'm at my wits end.
I bought the phone April 15th, 2010; less than a year ago! and every time I update it, there is always a problem, it constantly freezes even though I don't have many apps on it... very frustrated... Please help me fix my iphone? I signed a 3 year contract for the plan and I can't change phones now... not after spending 500$ on this one!

    Hi,
Had the same problem. Turned off! Zonealarm and update went along very smoothly. So if you haven't got zonealarm disable any firewall you have got for the time of the update . Hope that helps.

  • My 3GS went black today.  How do I fix Error Code 1604?

My 3GS went black today.  At first, I just thought the battery was dead.  But when I went to charge it, it behaved differently.  Eventually the Apple logo popped up, and then a message appeared that stated that I needed to activate the phone.  The next screen said that I needed to hook it up to iTunes.
When I did that, it said that I needed to "restore" the device.  Upon doing so, I eventually got a message that said there was a problem, and referenced Error Code 1604.  I can see the online instructions of what to do, but none of that works.
So should I toss the phone in the garbage?  Or take it 60 miles to the nearest Apple store?  Or is there some brilliant person out there that can tell me how to fix this?  :-)
    Thanks!

    Well, as the article says about 1604, if none of the steps work, it needs service;

So you can either take it into an apple store, or call Apple and use one of their mail services.

See this support document http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694 for error codes, however I do not see anything for an error 3. You might try experimenting when things listed near that, such as error code 2.

  • Error codes 1604 and 1602 when trying to update my iphone 3g to 3.0

ive tried and tried and tried, i have read the error resolutions for my error codes, ive tried a different computer, ive tried installing my usb drivers, everything!
all i seem to get when updating is, it says preparing iphone for update then the screen goes blank, baklight still on but the screen is black and then nothing for a min or 2 then i get the error code (one of the 2) can anyone help me and has anyone experienced the same thing?

Nothing worked until i finally went to 8.1.10 FIRST. I had this same problem last week, updating a customer’s 3G to 3.0 from 2.2.1, on a MAC (using iTunes 8.2.1)! I tried on 2 different macs, 2 different sync cables, a bootcamp Vista SP1 on my MBpro and then XP pro SP3. All registered a 1602, 14 or 16 error everytime, about halfway through the update on the iPhone. I also tried removing the old 3.0 update and prefs file from the user data > app > apple directories with no luck. Also tried reinstalling itunes on the Mac.
    What finally worked was:
    - uninstall itunes (if you have anything above 8.1.10).
    - move your itunes library file (for windows, it’s located under the iTunes directory, usually called iTunes Library.itl). You want iTunes to create a blank file since your 8.2.1 upgraded itl file won’t work with 8.1.10.
    - put your ipod into DFU mode
    - restore your iPhone to 2.2.1 using iTunes 8.1.10 (go here to download older versions of iTunes)
    - use the same site above to download 8.2.0 (not 8.2.1).
    - install 8.2.0 and connect your iPhone. It will notify you about the update. Download & install the 3.0 update (if you uninstalled, the 3.0 update should be deleted).
    - upgrade back to 8.2.1
    - move your library (itl) file back. To be safe, I would hold the shift key down to select your 8.2.1 file (even if it’s named the same as the one you created from iTunes 8.1.10).
1 hour later, I have everything updated. All I can say is that there’s a bug in 8.2.1 that wasn’t there in 8.2.0. I updated my iPod Touch first gen no problem with 8.1. Hope it works for others.

  • My iPhone won't "restore." (error code 1604)

I got it to the point where the iTunes logo is showing on the screen with the picture of the plug underneath it (meaning: sync your iPhone) and when iTunes opens it tells me that it's "detected an iPhone in recovery mode" and my iPhone "needs to be restored." So I click on "restore" then I click on "restore and update" and after doing so it tells me: "extracting software" and then a new window pops-up after that one that says: "preparing iPhone for restore" and then after about two minutes it gives me this error message: "the iPhone could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1604)" what am I doing wrong? I'm freaking out right now, is my iPhone dead or what? Why won't it freaking restore already and start working again? The last time this happened after an update it only did this a few times and then it magically worked. This time I've been trying with no such luck for hours and it's frustrating me beyond belief!
    HELP, PLEASE?!?!

I had the same problem wen I updated to 2.0 Found an article telling me to remove the 2.0 software update from my Library/iTunes/iPhone file... which I did. Worked fine as long as I hit cancel restore when plugging in the iPhone. It would then sync normally. So the genius bar said to plug in the iPhone and click restore ... once the software started to load, eject the iPhone... that way I would have the current software on my computer, and could stop the "continue retore" prompt. So I did it. Changed the prompt, but still wanted to restore - so I clicked OK. Went through a loop of this several times before a prompt came up asking if I wanted to cancel the restore all together (which I selected!!). And it finally worked (yeah!) No more prompts or weird errors about file not found. PS The Genius also said to try deleting the iTunes preferences and restart if the first fix didn't work (in case this helps anyone else.)

  • TS3694 Just took my 1st gen iPod out of it's original box, never used before.  Plugged it into my new Mac book Pro and it recognizes that the iPod is in recovery mode but when I click to restore, error 1611 comes up - but that error code doesn't say what

I had an 8GB 1st gen iPod in it's original box in storage and just took it out to hook it up.  Charged it overnight, plugged it into new Mac Book Pro and it was recognized as being an iPod in recovery but other identifying information was all indicated as "n/a" (so, unknown OS, etc).  Error code 1604 came up so I downloaded iTunes on the Mac Book and it is currently showing version 10.  But now when I try to restore the iPod, error code 1611 comes up and the troubleshooting doesn't tell me what else to try.  The USB connector that came with the iPod was also never used before - brand new also from the box so that should be fine.  I also tried a different USB port on the Mac Book.  Any ideas?

  • Error code after updating

I have tried updating my iPod software, but after i did, i got a message saying something about an error code - 1604. I have already tried looking at various parts of the Apple Support website, but none of the things suggested have worked. Whenever i turn my iPod on, i am always getting the same picture about plugging in to iTunes. Can someone please give me suggestions as to what to do to solve this problem???

I have tried looking it up on Google and seen thousands of YouTube vids on the subject, but nothing is working. This is really starting to annoy me, as no-one I talk to knows what to do!!!!!!!

  • HT201263 I purchased an 1gen 16GB Ipod from a seller. The ipod only shows the connect to itunes logo when connected to computer. The display shows without the word itunes. I got error codes 1603 and 1604 and have followed all the steps that were shown on

I purchased a 16gb ipod touch 1 gen and it wont restore or show the battery chaging icon. It shows the symbol of usb cable and what appears to be an itunes symbol without the itunes words being displayed. Upon trying to restore I have gotten error codes 1603 & 1604. I referred to the apple website for assistance and followed the steps to the letter with no results. So what else should I try or could I try because I have has no such luch thus far? I have held the home button and power button I tried to enter DFU mode but unsuccessful due to the screen boots with apple logo then immediately goes to the itunes screen and no further only when connected. Will not power on without usb connection have charged battery to see if it was the issue and no battery bar locator displays with or without being connected to PC.

    So you did all this:
