Fastest conversion in compressor

what settings in compressor will give the fastest conversion from a final cut reference movie into a compressed format that can be played on a windows computer? i am not concerned about video quality. i just need to share a rough edit with my clients. are any of the setting known to be faster than others?

Compressor will not work.

  • PAL to NTSC conversion in compressor

i need to create a n NTSC dvd for a client so i need to convert my QT file to NTSC in compressor.
Now i used the standard PAL to NTSC preset but the final file seems to be huge compared to the PAL M2V i created for the PAL version of the DVD and also still seems to be complete QT file? jot a M2V and AC3 file for use in DVDSPro.
Anyone have a workflow for the conversion in Compressor (please not the Natress conversion as it really seems so confusing to me)
    Many thanks

    Well, not that fast...
If I was going to do it again I would proceed as I did recently i.e.
Use toast to get a NTSC DVD (after accepting transcoding by Toast)
Use DVDxDV (or equivalent, this is what I use) or MPEG streamclip to extract a .mov file corresponding to your DVD files (if several VTS, DVDxDV is doing a very good job for each separated parts)
Then, the resulting .mov file that you can play in QT can be imported ditrectly (video and sound) into FCP for further editing, and compression via compressor to get mv2 and ac3 that you can use into DVDSP
May not be the typical professionnal way...but it works.

  • Fastest conversion method

Hi. I need to get a bunch of hi def stringouts into a smaller format I can FTP to various interested parties. Quality is irrelevant. Speed is important. Any tips on the fastest way of doing this? Here are the programs at my disposal:
    Final Cut
    Compressor
    Quicktime
    MPEG Streamclip
    FFmpegX
I've been exporting from FC at current settings and exporting for web through Quicktime (H.264/1.5 MB/sec). This seems to be slightly faster than converting to H.264 in compressor.
    Anyone know a faster way?

    Wing Hunter,
stating that quality is irrelevant is a rather daunting scenario... even if I had to send a home video to my grand father I'd care about what his left eye can see . Creating and sending a basic, decent video compression quality is like... a simple and genuine "shaking hands" with a friend. It is just a polite gesture.
H.264 is great in delivering outstanding quality keeping file size small (really small if you need), exploit it. Do some tests by gradually reducing bit rate, whichever the case, make sure that whatever you show is watchable.

  • ACVHD file conversion in Compressor?

Using Log & Transfer to import ACVHD files in FCP6 makes the footage unusable (juddering, very obvious that frames have been cut).
What program can I use to transcode my ACVHD files to SD resolution, to be honest I don't care about quality anymore as long as you can watch smooth video footage. Can I use Compressor and if so to what settings do I have to use?
Also I have a FLIP4MAC file bugging me, I think it has to do with my trial to use WMV extension, can the FLIP4MAC be the problem?

  • 60i to 24p conversion problem-Compressor 3

I'm trying to do a conversion from 29.97 interlaced footage to 23.976 progressive. The results look good but the clip comes out 125% of its original duration. I don't want slow motion. On the frame control page i activate the button that says:
so source frames play at 23.98 fps. The button above that which says Set Duration to: is not activated, and its input field is empty. However when i finish the compression and come back and look at this saved setting, the button for duration is still not activated, but in its field, grayed out, is 125% of source. And this is what appears to have happened to my clip. It is 125% of source length. Converting frame rates is not supposed to affect duration, is it? Anybody know why this is happening?

    Hi Tajuddin
Thanks for the response. Here is my LOV query. I am saving the SHIPTO_NAME which contains the ampersand from Page3 to an item on Page2 using the branch parameters. I may have said before it was on the button form but this case is using the branch form.
select distinct shipto_name dv, shipto_name rv
    from data_mgr.custs
    where jde_customer_type = 'CR'
    and cust_channel_cd not in ('I','R')
and shipto_name not like 'AGENT HOUSE%'
    order by 1
    Assignments:
    Set these: P2_AGENCY_NAME_DISPLAY
    To : &P3_AGENCY_NAME.
The branch logic is conditional on the user pressing a 'Create New Contract' button that triggers this branch.
When Page2 is rendered the Agency Name shows the ampersand as '&' with the 'amp;' appended to it.
Thanks very much for your help.

  • SD to HD Conversion Using Compressor

I'm preparing a Blu-ray disc using Encore and all of my material, except for one thing, was shot using a Sony HXR-NX5U as 1080p/24. The one clip that is does not conform to this standard was shot using a mini DV camera.
I know that to upconvert this in Compressor, I need to have the Frame Controls turned on and use the Best Resize Filter. However, a few quick questions:
Since this was shot as DV, should I have the output fields match those of the interlaced source, or convert it to progressive?
Are there are recommended settings for Anti-alias and Details Level for upconverting?
Since all of the other material is 1920x1080, should I upconvert this to the same frame size, or only go up to 1280x720?
Should I leave it at 29.97 or convert it to 23.98 to match everything else?
    Thanks!
    John-Paul

1440x1080 is an anamorphic size so when you take SD anamorphic footage and scale it up to HD in compressor and it will go for 1440x1080. However, according to this article you should be fine to go up to 1920 x 1080.
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=86%2 6section=12%26tasks=true
If I were you I would upconvert to 1920 x 1080, make progressive (by deinterlacing) but leave the frame rate as is.
As far as I can tell if this is it's own title on the disc then the mixed frame rate shouldn't be a problem.
    Hope that helps.

  • Compressor vs Algolith for format conversion

Has anyone done any testing in terms of frame rate and format conversion of Compressor vs the Algolith plugins for Shake?
    Cheers
    Al

    Hi,
Compressor is REALLY slow if you use the highest quality settings.
Algolith is always slow (check here):
    http://www.algolith.com/index.php?id=algotools_benchmarks
Here is what they recommended to speed up the process:
"To speed up the PAL to NTSC conversion, do it in 2 passes to avoid the content adaptive scaler which doesn’t do much when downscaling 720x576 to 720x480. My recommendation is MAADI double frame rate, AE scaling to 720x480 -> intermediate result. Intermediate result -> FC 50 frame per sec to 60 field per second."
Their Noise Reduction Software is great. If that is any indication their format conversion is probably really good quality.
If you try it let us know.
    Best Wishes!

  • Workaround for compressor HDV to DVD field issue?

I need a work around for the field issue apparent when down-converting HDV to DVD.
The Bonsai method <http://www3.telus.net/bonsai/Welcome.html> will not work, as there is too much motion and a side effect of the "fastest" conversion is that it gives a 3-d ghosting effect on fast motion in the frame.
I can not convert to 720P60 or 480P, as FCP converts it to 30P and then doubles the frames, and the motion is jittery.
I could dump it to camera and then down-convert in camera, but I have heard this is not a great method either.
I have seen in another forum to save the HDV timeline in FCP as a HDV quicktime movie, and then import that into DVD studio pro and have it down-convert, but DVD studio pro says this is an "incompatible file".
How do I get 1080i HDV footage onto a DVD so that it looks acceptable?

I had a similar problem with HDV (1080i shot on Cannon HV-20) footage, looks great in post and terrible when converted (herringbone lines and too many artifacts.) I’ve successfully used the Bonsai method on another piece I did but the footage was shot on a HVX-200 at 720 24p and there were no “action” shots. I wasn’t as successful using the method using 1080i footage and it definitely didn’t help with the fast motion shots. I did a search in this forum on HD to SD and there are a lot of helpful hints and methods. I experimented with a lot of the suggestions but in the end I was able to produce very nice and acceptable results by doing the following:
1] I didn’t create an SD sequence; I exported the footage as a Quicktime movie (self contained) straight from my HDV sequence.
2] I dropped the Quicktime file into Compressor and selected 90-minute DVD Anamorphic Best 2-pass VBR. Running Compressor from Final Cut ties up your system as well as there seems to be a delay between the handoff from Final Cut to Compressor (running the latest 5.x version and 2.3.) Creating a Quicktime file frees your system and it’s debatable if you actually compress faster or take a hit on quality. I’ve tested both from Final Cut and using a Quicktime file and didn't see any real difference in quality.
3] Change the field dominance from Top to Progressive in the tab where you see 2-Pass VBR Best and also in the encoding tab (not in front of my system so I can’t recall the name or order of the icons). In the encoding tab you will notice it says “same as source.” The pull down will show you Top, Bottom, Progressive, Automatic…I tried them all and in various combinations and anything other than progressive in both tabs produced undesirable results.
4] The options for Fast, Good, Better and Best in the other encoding pull down sections are a matter of preference and patience. Selecting Best in all categories takes a really long time to compress (36 hours for a 9-minute piece using a Mac Pro 3.0GHz dual-core Intel with 4GB ram.) I ran tests using different combinations and found that selecting the default settings is decent and stepping each category up to the next level helped but not enough to warrant the long compression cycle to stick with Better across the board. When you do your testing, it’s best to use as little footage as possible or you will find yourself waiting too long to see the actual results. I used a 1-second (29 frames) shot of a girl twirling around, hair flying everywhere, and girls next to her using hula-hoop’s.
5] Use the sliding bar in the viewer to see the impact of your choices before submitting the job. To the right you will see the “original” footage and to the left you can see the results of your selection. You can move the bar across the footage to see (approximately) the end results.
6] One thing I did notice is that no matter what settings I use, the output is slightly darker (reds were deeper, skin tones were warmer and not as smooth), but hey, you are going from HDV to SD so it’s not going to be perfect.
Hope that helps and good luck.

  • Instructions: Create Blu-Ray disc in Compressor with Final Cut TImeline

I searched mightily for simple instructions on how to do this. The Compressor help files are woefully inadequate in providing a simple walkthrough to do this. Burning a Blu-ray directly from Final Cut does not allow one to optimize the conversion like compressor does. So:
    1) Right click your chosen sequence in Final Cut
    2) Click "Share" The Share dialog box will come up.
    3) Choose "Blu-Ray" in the destination drop down in the top-left corner of the Share window (don't forget to choose the destination location of the files at the top of the dialog)
    4) Click "Send to Compressor" in the bottom-left corner
Compressor will open and a job will automatically be created with Blu-ray video
and Dolby ac3 audio. Set options and submit as usual in Compressor

The send to compressor option occasionally creates problems. Most people would recommend exporting as a self-contained movie, then bringing that into compressor and using your workflow from there.

  • Converting PAL to NTSC using Compressor, FCP or iDVD?

    Hi guys,
I'm currently editing some PAL footage from a Canon DSLR which has been compressed into an Apple Prores which measures 1920 x 1080.
I need to put my finished project on a DVD so it to play in the US.
Should I export to NTSC in FCP, Compressor or simply setup iDVD as an NTSC project and hope that dropping my completed PAL is converted into NTSC?
What are my options to convert my PAL footage into NTSC and at what stage should I do it?
Finally what NTSC video format would be ideal for HD video on DVD?
    Thanks in advance!

You could pay to have a post facility do the conversion, which would give the best quality. OR, do your standards conversion in Compressor or in JES Deinterlacer.
Giving iDVD an NTSC 1080 Pro Res file may work well. Do a test on a short representative section of your movie and see. If it doesn't meet your expectations, go into Compressor and resize to 729x480 anamorphic (PAR of .84); turn on Frame Controls and set Resize Filter to Best. Submit and then bring that into iDVD.
No doubt you appreciate that all DVDs are SD and that the end product, while potentially quite good, is compromised in image quality compared to your high rez original. If you want higher resolution, you have two options: red laser AVCHD disks for videos <20 minutes or Blu Ray, which is a whole different kettle of fish.
    Good luck.

  • Exporting ProRes conversion of HDV into Motion 3 darkens image

When I export an HDV clip from FCP into Motion 3, apply Optical Flow frame blending, then export to FCP as an HDV file, the brightness and saturation of the resulting QT HDV file are essentially identical to the original. But when I begin by exporting the original clip to ProRes(HQ) via QT conversion or Compressor, bring the ProRes file into Motion and afterwards export to FCP as HDV, the resulting clip is considerably darker (and maybe more saturated) than the original. In the QT conversion, I'm not applying any brightness or contrast filtering. Any clues about what I'm doing wrong?
    Alfred Guzzetti

    hi,
why do you need to convert the codec into motion and then back again into FCP. Why not send to motion from fcp keeping the same format, and then drop thew motion file itself onto the fcp timeline and use it as a clip. ( although the need to render it everytime something moves can be a pain I know). I find that the less codec changes in a work flow the better.

  • DVCPRO HD720P50 conversion to SD Issues

I'm working in FCP with HD720P50 footage - the original files in qtime state HD720P25/50
The sequence settings are 960x720 25fps
I have exported the sequence as Qtime reference file using the sequence settings and then imported to DVD Studio Pro
I've also exported the sequence into Compressor and used Mpeg2 compressions
The issue I have is that the DVD version (SD) is heavily pixelated and blocky (whilst on the computer running from the ts folder looks fine)
If anyone can give me some advice to get the SD DVD problem fixed I would really appreciate it!
    Thanks
    J

I have had success with letting Final Cut do the SD conversion when Compressor doesn't give me the desired results. It can take a while but the end result is always better
I create a 16x9 SD sequence and put my HD sequence into the SD and then render with the proper SD settings. Export a reference or self-contained QT to create the DVD files in Compressor.
Compressor is a great program but the HD to SD conversion can be hit or miss.

  • Can't render an alpha channel in Compressor

This has allways been a problem for us.
Whenever I try to compress a sequence using compressor (2.0.1 on a 2Ghz G5 OS 10.4.8) and render an alpha channel it never works.
Typically I'll send a sequence containing only a lower third over a transparant screen to compressor, select the Amination + Alpha codec (all the settings seem correct: Animation, million of colors+, best quality) and I end up with the lower third over a black screen, no alpha channel. Also, if there is blank space in the timeline between clips that also renders as black, not transparant.
The strange thing is that when I export using Quicktime Conversion with the same Animation+Alpha settings it does work and I get nice clean transparancy.
Is this a bug with Compressor or am I missing something?
    2.0Ghz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Mikey & Jumpy,
Compressor does have a Animation Alpha Preset under Motion Graphics and after reading this post for several days i decided to test it for myself and sure enough, I can't get it to work. I've exported the same lower third through Quicktime Conversion and through Compressor. Bring them both back into FCP and compare the format in the browser. They match exactly except for the Compressor version doesn't have the alpha in the time line. I tried exporting a ref and importing that into compressor, same result. I tried importing the new file into After Effects to see if it would interpret different, same result.
The only conclusion i can come up with is the Compressor is writing an alpha channel, but its also writing a black matte in the RGB. But as far as I'm concerned I can't see a discernible difference between QT Conversion and Compressor exports.
    Good Luck
    Chris

  • Quicktime Error -50 on output to compressor

For the life of me I cannot output my edit!  I have tried a variety of ways, Share, Export via QT Conversion and Compressor.  Each of which fails with the quicktime error code -50.  Despite a general google search i cannot seem to find any reference to thois error code at all.  The problem is particularly frustrating since each output iteration takes several hours before it reports a fail.  I have been at this for a week now and have missed the films output deadline.

    Help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi David, thanks for the prompt reply.
Currently locked out as I am attempting another output.  I have succeeded outputting as a self-contained fcp mov with very large output size ~24Gb.  Took a few minutes to process
    Dimensions 1280X720
Codec:  Apple prores 422HQ, Linear PCM, timecode
    Colour Profile:  HD(1-1-1)
    Duration 20mins
    Audio channels 2
    total bit rate:  145, 064
Ok as i'm typing that processing completed kicking out a 1.29Gb Youtube version as follows:
    Dimensions 1280X720
    Codec:  H.264, AAC, Timecode
    Colour Profile:  HD(1-1-1)
    Duration 20mins
    Audio channels 2
    total bit rate:  8,289
I achieved this by re-ingesting the above outputted selfcontained FCP mov back into a new project, dragged to sequence and re-output via share option took around an hour to process.  So I'm geting somewhere, but still not convinced of quality

  • Getting better contrast in Compressor 2?

In our current project we have been taking FCP 4.5 projects on my colleague's machine and exporting using the fastest settings of Compressor 1. That has been fine for developing, and the quality is not too bad, but the clips are slightly dark.
Now that we're nearly final with all clip edits I want to compress them at the highest quality I can (there are no disc contraints, other than slight caution about using too high a data rate). I tried using Compressor 2 on a 90 minute highest quality two pass vbr, and the results may or may not be better, they're certainly brighter, but they have a washed out lack of contrast look that is distracting.
I have BitVice, which produces videos with as much contrast as Compressor 1, and yet not as dark, so I'm fine for this project. Just out of interest though, what would be the way to use Compressor 2 so that the contrast remains good?
