Fcpx Random black frames

I've been using FCP X to do simple projects until I can master it. We all know it's buggy even on the best macs, but today shocked me.
Random black frames littered through out the video. Not a lot, but even one black frame ruins the shot. I shoot interviews and b/roll of businesses for a company and then upload the footage, I like to do a little pre edit to organize and delete unnecessary footage in FCP X.
I've been liking the new tools, the new interface and the way it handles different formats. Yesterday it was freaking out a little on the output, but today I got random black frames on the HD footage and complete video static on a clip in my SD output. It crashed a lot yesterday, that I can understand (kinda), but actual glitches in the output? OMG, that is just wrong. It makes me wonder if any of my other projects I outputted have a similar problem but the client didn't tell me about it.
Wow, back to FCP 7 till they work this out.
It's like my IPhone, it's a fantastic device with all these features, but the phone part is worst then my last phone.
You can have revolutionary video tools in the software, but it had better output perfect video. That's it's main job.
Anybody else have  problem with black frames?

Thanks for your reply, Szalam.
Yes, I am very familiar with the bug report process. I wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue hoping that I could find an immediate solution. As it stands, the temporary workaround is to render to something other than Cineform AVI.
Sorry, I am quite busy right now (large project with a short deadline) and don't have the time to do much test rendering. When I get a minute I will definitely do more tests with different codecs etc.
I would be happy to upload some P2 footage when time allows. Is there a way to upload directly to this site, or  is there another preferred method? I haven't attempted uploading files to this forum before.
Thanks again for your help!

  • After Effects Rendering Random Black Frames

Latest AE Build: 2014.2 Release. i7 Processor - 64 GB Ram - GForce FTW 680 with 4 GB Video RAM.
AE Project coming from Panasonic P2 files, rendering to AVI Cineform results in random black frames.
I have compared two separate renders of the same clip, both have black frames in different spots. Never had the problem with older versions of AE.
Anyone else having this issue or have an answer?
    Thanks!
UPDATE: Rendered to QT DNxHD and haven't found a Black frame yet. May be Cineform AVI compatibility issue since the addition of Cineform QT  support maybe? Didn't notice it before that. Hmmm.

    Thanks for your reply, Szalam.

  • Random Black frames in my footage.

I import my videos into Motion 5 from my camera in a quicktime format.  I keep getting random empty black frames in the video.  It is not a problem with the footage given that the quicktime plays fine.  I've tried every frame rate possible and it still keep happening.  Any suggestions.

That usually means you need to update your video driver.  But being on  a mac the only thing you can do is make sure you have the latest update for your OS.

  • Gaussian Blur effect causing black frames when rendered.

I am only using one effect in my video, its the gaussian blur, and in the previewer it shows the effect being applied, however it shows random black frames in the previewer, I thought this was just a random previewer issue.
I then rendered the video but when the blur effect is being applied it is showing random black frames in the video.

Talked to customer support and found out that it was a duplicate Gaussian Blur effect on the same frame causing it to have some issues sigh*
But thank you for the info about the media cache, I did not know about that.

  • CS3 put black frame onto images on saving end freezing in full screen mode

HI, I've got 2 problems with CS3, the first on my macPro 2x2.66 xeon - 4 Go - MAC 10.5.2
CS3 put, randomly, black frames on pictures when I'm saving as TIFF, CMJN, 8bits, a few month ago I have had same problems but with white frames ....
    Another problem with CS3, on a MacBook pro 2.4 - 3Go with LaCie LCD 21" screen, when I enter full screen mode and I moving picture with the hand, the Mac is freezing, and I have to reboot;
3 days ago after a crash, I've had to reinstal the system because the Lacie was seen as a "LCD screen" (not Lacie) and with 1440 pixels max display (1600 usualy).
I do really NEED help please

    lepixel,
What specifically do you mean by "network"? Are you working and saving files directly across a network? If so, and that is the problem, it is a known issue that does not necessarily mean you have a problem with your computer.
If a network is properly configured and maintained by a knowledgeable IT specialist, you can work this way. But as there's a very high number of possible network configurations and chances for fatal file errors (such as what you're experiencing), Adobe specifically warns that you should first drag-copy your files off the network server to your desktop, work locally, save locally, and then drag-copy the completed work back to the network server.
Does this describe your network and workflow?

  • Black frame on ProRes 422 multicam export

No issues when watching a project in PP but when exporting within PP get a random black frame in export. Re exported several times and black frame would move to different parts of the video. Tried flattening cams, no fix. Previosuly to issue -- updated CC 2014, CUDA driver update. Music Video had 5 cameras, 1 track of audio. - have some effects in the project like blurs with dissolves.  Plays back beautifully, h.264 files were fine. Just when exporting final version to client did this occur. Tried new sequence, no difference.  Only fix was a ProRes 422 HQ file. Really didnt need HQ, standard was what was requested.  footage is native canon dslr 7D and 5D footage. Any ideas? Also, weirdly I have to change the default codec from GO Pro Cinema to ProRes 422. I'm sure there are a million variables but wanted to see if anyone had stumbled on this and had a suggestion.
New Mac Power book with 1 TB ssd.

    External FW800 drive.
latest update to PP CC 2014
    ProRes 422 1920x1080
    generic QuickTime profiles for 1080

#1 - You shouldn't be using ProRes HQ. All you are doing is doubling the amount of space the footage takes up. HQ is really meant for 2K footage or higher...stuff projected on a BIG screen. If this is going to DVD...SD DVD or BluRay, then regular ProRes will be your best option.
#2 - Are you looking at this footage on an HDTV? That is the only way to really tell what your footage will look like. Because the way FCP shows the footage, and QT shows it, are different. QT typically brightens the picture so that it will be viewable on most monitors. BUT, if you choose the FCP COLOR COMPATIBILITY in the QT preferences, it will show you what FCP shows you. And if this is too dark, then you need to color correct it to be how you want it to look. BUT! You cannot judge what the footage will look like on a computer monitor. It is VASTLY different that what an HDTV, or regular TV, will show you. You need to get the signal to the HDTV (HD capture card) and then color correct the footage to look the way you want it to look.
#3 - Avoid HQ. Seemed like it needed repeating.

  • Black frames after export in Premiere CC 2014

    Hi,
I am getting black frames in my exported video from Premiere CC 2014 and Media Encoder CC 2014. This is my first project in the CC 2014 suite, but in CC I never had this problem. When exporting directly from Premiere or queued from Media Encoder, black frames appear at random through out my video. I am using presets H264 HD 720 29.97 and Vimeo 720 29.97. My sequence is ProRes 422 1080 29.97. I am downscaling the final product for online.
I am making no changes to the process at all. Both formats of h264 give me black frames. Has anyone else had this issue? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have also now exported to QuickTime ProRes 720 29.97 and H264 1080 20.97 and still get black frames in the final export. I am using Premiere v8.1 and Media Encoder 8.1.0.122.

  • Random white frames in Quicktime Slideshow

I've made a slideshow in iPhoto and exported a Quicktime movie that I plan to put on DVD. Everything works, except that around 1:40 into the movie, the screen goes randomly white for a frame. One images fades to black, and then there's a random white frame, and then the next image fades up from black. There's only one way to export a slideshow, and I've recreated the whole thing several times. There is no reason for it to do this, and it's driving me nuts. It doesn't show up when I view the show in iPhoto, but every time at the same spot when I look at the exported movie.

I presume you are using an album for this slide show. An album contains only an alias for a photo in your library. The alias may be pointing to a photo that has been deleted or corrupted.
Check out the photo that is supposed to appear at that point.

  • Black frames on the screen

Please can anybody help me to find a solution to this problem? Since a couple of days black frames appears on the screen, they're the same frames that appear when a text box is selected, but they also appear around icons on the desktop, around the browsers buttons etc. but also randomly in bigger size somewhere in the middle of the screen with nothing in it.
It appears like something which have been clicked even if it's not.
It started apparently with no reason after switching the computer on.
    Thanks a lot.

  • Black frame added to my video when exporting...

I just knocked together a simple 3 minute video last night and used the share to vimeo option. For starters I don't like how this option doesn't offer to save the video locally too, and also doesn't really give you any progress updates once uploading is being done.
Anyways the footage is online and looks pretty good, however I noticed in one part there is a black screen for a frame.
I wondered if it could be my camera, so I've just checked the raw footage tonight, the original clip has no such problem.
I checked the project within FCPX and it doesn't show it there during live playback.
Finally i downloaded the full original version back off vimeo (see my earlier point about not getting a local copy!!) and checked that to see if it was perhaps vimeo's transcode that went wrong. Sadly the black frame glitch is present in the original uploaded file.
So yeah, source is fine, editor displays it fine, the stitched together movie has been given this black frame.
Not massively impressed, surely the exported output should be the main priority.
Has anyone else experienced any problems with the output from FCPX ?

how about if you just export to quicktime movie locally? Do you see the black frame then? You can also export to quicktime and select h264 as the output format, then you should be able to upload that file to vimeo. Extra step but the share to vimeo might be buggy.
Another thing to try is to delete all your render files (both event and project). Let things re-render and try the share to vimeo again.

  • Black frames on playback and render with .MOV exported from Avid

    Hi there,
some of our customers experience troubles while importing quicktime .mov files from last Avid Media Composer versions (latest 6.0.x, 6.5.x and 7.0.x versions).
Using any Avid codecs for export, when clips are played in AE, black frames appear on video, these are also present on renders and exported files.
Playing the same clips in other softwares and media players, the video is clear.
As we discussed with Avid support, Avid made changes in his software and codecs and it sounds like AE doesn't correctly interpret it.
Have you already heard of (or experienced) such troubles?
    Best regards,
    Sebastien GEFFROY,
    CTM Solutions.

I'm having the same problem, but can't get a clean render out using a different codec.
I was trying to render all my After Effects compositions out as Quicktime with DNxHD 120 selected.  This would give me random full frames of solid red.  Every single render.
So, I tried selecting Quicktime NONE and most of the renders would just abort with the bleating lamb noise.
So, I tried AVI uncompressed.  Every single composition rendered out, but every single rendered clip had exactly the same glitch - A solid black line that spans the bottom of the frame and increases in size every frame until it fills the screen.  Then the picture returns and a couple of seconds later a full frame black flash.  Same pattern and same duration - every clip.
So, if DNxHD codec has a problem and Quicktime has a problem and AVI has a problem I'd say it's safe to say that it's probably not a recording codec issue.  How can three different codecs present a problem?
I've checked my source files.  It doesn't matter what drive I place them one, either an internal solid state drive, or USB3 spinning disk in a caddy or network path to a NAS raid, or system drive, they give the same problems.
It doesn't matter what the source files are either - Tiff sequences from 3DS Max, JPG timelapse sequences from Nikon camera, video camera files, Quicktimes, AVIs, you name it - Broken renders.
So, I'd say that having tested my input files and tried many render codecs that the problem lies in between - Either the Computer or After Effects itself.
Now, up until Creative Cloud I was using my trusty old CS2.  That worked fine.
If you read the internet it's full of people having rendering problems when using CS6 and CC.
Now, in my understanding, the main difference between me using CS2 and CC is the Adobe software - GPU renderer.
I am using the exact same workflow on the exact same equipment:-
    HP Z1 Xeon E31280 @ 3.50GHz
    Windows 7 64 bit professional
    8GB DDR3 RAM.
    Nividia Quadro 3000M.
I'm close to giving up.  I'm going for a full system re-install, the gound up this bank holiday onto a brand new empty system drive.
I'll follow it with trying out various Nvidia drivers.
Can anyone point me to a definitive answer?  I have trawled many different forums, with people all having the same issues and no one has an answer.

  • Diagonal Bars - Black Frames

This is from a project I did about a year ago.  I recently opened it to render some output and found that many of the clips had their end portions covered with these black diagonal lines, and that the underlying video was black frames.  This project was created in CS5 and I reopened it in CS5.  The clip lengths including the bars seem to match the audio track properly so it seems the content in the is somehow shorter.  Nothing is locked or disabled and I've tried reimporting the clip with no effect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

Thanks for that Jeff.  The clips are time lapse footage from stills that were imported directly into Premiere.  The footage interprets to 29.97 so I tried changing it to 24 and now it fills out the clip perfectly.  Problem solved, but it seems pretty random that this rate change just happens.  In any case thanks for directing me towards a solution!

    Hi MyAppleID99,
You may want to check to make sure the clip hasn't been moved back and forth between wide screen and standard aspect ratios; sometimes a combination of letterboxing and pillarboxing can lead to a black frame "windowbox" when playing the final video. You may find the following article helpful:
