Finder "Go" menu - can items fly open?

The Finder Go menu lists all the directory folders for Home, Documents, Applications, Utilities, etc.
It sure would be nice if they would fly open, allow one to select the item one wants, and then shut. Just like the Recent Items does under the Apple menu.
Is there a way to tinker with OSX to make that happen?

no, there is no way to make folders in the go menu to spring-load. no hidden tricks for this that I've ever heard of. if you want you can make a suggestion to apple to add that feature.

    Hi Mary and Matthew
You might find it helpful to "try before you buy" - there is a 30 day free trial offer for Office for Mac 2011, accessible from M's .com website.
You may be able to use this period to open and resave your old documents in a format that enables you to switch instead to using Apple's iWorks apps moving forward.
I initially intended to do something similar, but ended up buying Office as it provided an easier way (for me, at least) to continue working with years worth of old emails, letters, spreadsheets and other documents (from my PC days) without risking damage to their integrity, formatting, etc.

  • Why can't I find the menu bar when I open iTunes on my Windows 8 lap top

I have downloaded some music in iTunes on my iPod Touch [version 8.1.2]. I noticed that the iTunes  also appears on my Windows 8 laptop and when I sign in the music I purchased appears but I cannot download it because the computer is, "not authorised". My account details show that 3 devices are connected to iTunes.  I checked  on Google how to authorize a computer and it says: choose store > authorize this computer  from the menu bar but I cannot find a menu bar. Can anyone please tell me what to do?

Press the Alt and S keys and choose Authorize this Computer, or click here, follow the instructions, click on Store in the menu bar, and choose Authorize this Computer.

  • Finder - Cannot double click items to open

Since I upgraded to Snow Leopard, intermittently I have been unable to double click some items to open them in their default programs. I can go into the program and open them via File - Open.
If I double click an item with it's default program open, nothing happens. If I double click an item and the program is not open, the program bounces in the dock and does not open.
Same for .dmg files. If I download them, I can only open them using Disk Utility.
These problems are not present when I boot up. They only happen at some point later. A restart fixes the problem.
    Anyone else experiencing this?

I am having the same issue with my machine, and 3 other iMac machines. All updated to 10.6.1. At first I thought it was just attachments in e-mails not opening correctly... Then I discovered that double-clicking, or right (option) clicking and choosing open, or open with, did not do anything. If the default program for that file is open, it will take you to the program but will not open anything. I have found this to be a problem with .pdf, .doc, .docx, .jpg files. I tried deleting the finder preference file, which has done nothing. No solutions as of yet.

  • Search results in Finder - alias issues ("can't be opened because ..." )

    Hello,
I have read the topic "The alias can't be opened because the original item can't be found" connected to external hard drives. I also get such message, but the problem is connected to the Finder's Search function. There is no problem to find items (files and folders) through Search in Finder, but when I want to open the searched item, usually a folder, I got this alias error message. Nevertheless, I have no problem to open the item although this message pops up. I am not sure whether this is due to the recent update. A week ago, I got a new logical board (motherboard). Maybe the alias error message is because of the new logical board? Can the problem be solved?
    Kind regards,
    Aleksandar

It's a bug. See this thread for a bit more detail about it:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2175779&tstart=135
The solution will have to come from Apple. Be sure to use the link in the above thread to report that you are having this problem too.

  • "Open with ... other" Finder contextual menu

Hi, I am facing a curious situation in my SL 10.6.8 machine, when using the "Open with ... other" Finder contextual menu.
When I'm logged with any user account except one, the menu item behaves normally : it creates an "Open window" pointing to the /Applications folder of the machine and the window seems to be a normal one.
But when I'm logged with a specific user account, the menu item creates an "Open window" pointing to the /Documents folder of the user account instead of the /Applications folder of the machine. So I need to manually navigate to the /Applications folder to choose the application to launch.
Of course, I may create a new account, transfer my files to this new account, delete the current one and explain to Time Machine that the new account is the same as the old one. But I don't want to waste my time with this basic solution. So, I'm looking for a better one. But, at this time, I failed to find the way the "Open with ... other" Finder contextual menu knows where to open the "Open window".
    Any suggestion will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello linda2009
    1) I bought my first Default Folder licence in 2002. I upgraded to Default Folder X in 2003. I have a very good opinion of this product, and I recommend it to my friends when they decide to switch to Mac.
    2) My Macs are configured with many accounts, one which is admin (and the only admin) of the machine, the others which are non-admin users.
    3) The incident I described in my first post occurred only when logged in one of the non-admin accounts.
    4) To solve the incident, I did not deinstall the product, but only deactivate it when logged in the specific account showing the problem, delete the preference files of this account, and reactivate the product always logged in the same account. Of course, as the licence key was stored in one of the files I deleted, I had to register it again.
So, the incident did not change my mind about the product. I suggest you try it. It's free for 30 days.
    Hope this will help you.

  • Why are downloaded items always opening in gedit?

I'm running Firefox 26 and a modified version of Ubuntu 12.04. Whenever I download something and click on it in the top right download menu, the item is opened with the text editor gedit. If the file is not of a text nature (usually the case) it freezes gedit and is a pain to close. How can I prevent this?

    Hi Advocate,
You can reset the open with dialogue you can [http://mzl.la/NxCODA Change what Firefox does when you download]
    # Go to Firefox Options/Preferences
    # Select the Applications menu
    # From here you can change the application that opens up for specific document types

  • Finder.app Can't be Opened after upgrade

I just upgraded to Yosemite and my desktop will load for a few seconds before disappearing and Finder.app Can't Be Opened
    2014 MacBook Air

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Safari crashed, you would enter "Safari" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Cleanup of Finder Contextual Menu - Open With

How can I clean up the 'Open With' Finder Contextual Menu? It currently has duplicate entries for some applications (and, no, I don't have multiple copies of these applications installed on my Mac).
I tried to rebuild the 'Launch Services' database using a tool called 'Cache Out X,' but that didn't do do the trick.
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

    David,
That seems like a logical conclusion. Documentation? I assume you mean:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServic es.framework/Support/lsregister -h
lsregister: [OPTIONS] [-domain { system | local | user | network }]... [path]...
Search the paths for application bundles and add each found item to the Launch
Services database. For domain specifications, ask CF for the list of application
    locations in the given domain(s).
-kill Reset the global Launch Services database before doing anything else
-lint Print information about plist errors while registering bundles
-convert Register apps found in older LS database files
-lazy n Sleep for n seconds before registering apps if the local cache
    is aleady populated.
-r Recursively register directory contents, do not recurse into
    packages or invisible directories.
-R Recursively register directory contents, including the contents
    of packages and invisible directories.
-f force-update registration info even if mod date is unchanged
    -v Display progress information.
-dump Display full database contents after registration.
    -h Display this help.
Still not sure why /Volumes/* yielded three entries for GraphicConverter. However, when I was searching for all possible occurrences of the application, I did notice something odd: the GraphicConverter application does not include a ".app" extension. All the other applications that I checked include this extension.

  • I can't connect to the drive on my airport time machine and am receiving the message: "AirPort Time Capsule" can't be opened because the original item can't be found.

Time capsule has been working perfectly for months.
Suddenly I can't connect to the drive on my airport time capsule and am receiving the message: “AirPort Time Capsule” can’t be opened because the original item can’t be found.
Time machine appears to be still backing up (last backup within the last hour), but drive is not visible and I have files stored on it.
I have tried rebooting everything in order as suggested for other issues, anyone got any ideas how to see the drive again??

    What OS are you running??
It is very typical Yosemite issue.
    1. In airport utility does the TC show up.. if so click it.. and see the summary page which will include its IP address. That is what you are after.
From my screenshot you can see the TC address is 192.168.2.57
It might well show up briefly after a reboot or in ipad / iphone version utility. Yosemite is hopeless. The airport utility hardly works.
    2. In Finder use Go, Connect to server.
Type in SMB://192.168.2.57 (replace with IP you discover).
If it is possible it will request a password.. type that in and DO NOT FORGET.. to store it in your keychain.
This will work until the TC changes IP which won't happen if it is main router.. but will happen if it is bridged.. so you need to tell me the whole network setup.
Mavericks is nearly as bad and the above instructions should be universal except I would use AFP instead of SMB. Apparently Yosemite is now totally Windows oriented.

  • Time Capsule / Leopard 10.5.8 / Time Machine / Disk can't be opened because the original item can't be found / OSStatus error -6602

    Hi,
I'm facing a big issue with Time Machine on my Mac Book running Leopard 10.5.8 (build 9L31a) and my Time Capsule (firmware 7.6.1 (76100.4)).
I have searched a lot (during 3 days !!) to find a solution but no luck !
I have the same syntoms as described by LUNY in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/9364556#9364556
    To quickly summarize:
My MacBook was configured to use my Time Capsule as backup disk. Everything went fine during 2 years and then one day I suddently got problems with time machine !
Time Machine was unable to access my Time Capsule. Moreover it was drastically slowing down my MacBook !
    So:
    1. I stopped Time Machine and tried to change the backup disk: every time I chose my Time Capsule Disk, I got a OSStatus error -6602
    2. Then, I tried to access my Time Capsule from the Finder -> slow and then got this message 'Disk can't be opened because the original item can't be found'
    3. I searched in the logs for the specific reason and I found:
       - system.log (/var/log) :
          myMacBook kernel[0]: disk0s2: I/O error.
myMacBook /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[198]: NetworkNode::handleMountCallBack returned -6602 (the same error)
myMacBook ReportCrash[358]: Saved crashreport to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/kextload_2012-12-30-112946_myMacBook.crash using uid: 0 gid: 0, euid: 0 egid: 0
       - In CrashReporter (/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/): i see the problem coming from kextload with this exception:
           Exception Type:  EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
           Exception Codes: 0x000000000000000a, 0x000000000122d000
    4. I tried to mount the time capsule disk with Terminal (AFP protocol):
       > mount -t afp afp://admin:[email protected]/Data /Volumes/termAFPData/
result -> mount_afp: AFPMountURL returned error 19, errno is 19
These errors (6602 and 19) are neither documented anywhere nor associated to a clear description of the problem. The only thing I have found is that errno 19 is an IO error -> http://www.opensource.apple.com/source/CarbonHeaders/CarbonHeaders-18.1/MacError s.h
On the other hand, and this is the really weird part of the issue, my time capsule disk works well when I mount it with SMB protocol !!! (Or when I access it with a Windows XP machine).
So, the workaround is: mount -t smbfs //admin:[email protected]/Data /Volumes/termSMBData/
Or, in Finder -> Connect to server and there use the URL: smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/Data
Not sure what is going on ... but I pretty sure that's a bug and not a hardware problem.
Is there someone who has already found a solution for this kind of behaviour ?
It would avoid me a lot of headaches and improve the support for this kind of problem.
    Thanks !!!

Thanks a lot for this really quick reply.
When you say: "I would though go back to 7.5.2 firmware." Do you mean a reset to factory default ?
    Greetz
NO, your time capsule is running 7.6.1 but it is built with AFP following increased security for LION.. that is not required or available in Leopard.. so there is no point.. it is also not as stable on the older hardware.. at least in my experience.. I have repaired about 200 of the suckers so I do see a few.
When you select firmware update in the airport utility.. hold the option key.. all valid firmware versions for your TC then show up.. not only upgrades.. select 7.5.2 and upgrade to that.
Do a factory reset when you do it is a good idea though.. start off again.
And do reset of TM.. A4 in pondini.
    See if it helps.
Oh, the TC will continually complain about needing a firmware update.. turn off automatic checking of updates.. it will still annoy you for fun every few weeks but that is better than daily.
