  • RoboHelp 9 Training for ACE preparation

I am trying to find a RoboHelp 9 training class to take as I prepare for certification exam but so far all I've found are three-day courses across the country for over a thousand dollars. There do not seem to be any more affordable options, at least not that I've found the in the Washington DC area. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed - I just need to prepare for this exam. I've been using RH for a year but did not have any formal training (it's all been either self-taught or guidance from a more experienced colleague).
Are there any online courses any of you may know of, or specific test preparation materials that I should consider?

    LOL, does it matter?
On a serious note, most of what I do on my own is via the internet with a screen sharing session. Essentially, you share your screen and I "look over your shoulder" as you work through examples and learn the product. We converse in real time. Typically using a headset microphone. But you can be on speaker phone if you like.
Contact me privately if you are interested. I'm usually here offering free advice, not really here trolling for work. But since you asked...

Obviously Willam's comments about editing the output do not apply to MS HTML Help. It is possible with RH Webhelp (and possibly Flashhelp and Airhelp Web output, but I'm not familiar with those formats), but not particularly nice.
As he states, the easiest way is to continue using RH to edit the source and recompiling as needed.
With the chm files, they could decompile the chm, then edit and recompile in the free Microsoft HTML Help Workshop application, but they would lose RH specific functionality like build and conditional tags (and possibly drop-down hotspots - or at least not be able to add them easily). Additionally, changes they made to these files would not be reflected in the RH source files either. (The HTML Help Workshop project could be imported as a new project into RH if required, but I'm not sure exactly how messy that would be.)

  • Importing MS Word into RoboHelp HTML / TOC Creation/ CHM output?

    Hello,
I am a newbie to RoboHelp 8 and am trying out the Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2.5, and have a Windows 7 (64 Bit) OS.
At the moment, I have a single 40 page word document (MS Word 2010) that I would like to bring into RoboHelp 8.
With that said, I create a blank project, and then import the document.  But, when I try to generate and view a help file, I am not seeing the table of contents.  I have even done the AUTO TOC and verify that the links correspond to sections and sub-sections etc. - but still no TOC.
In addition, for some reason it brought in each of my figures twice, so that I have two figure 1s, two figure twos and so on.
Finally, it gave me an error message and was complaining about WidgetMax:
    "Compilation failed while compiling http:\www.widgetmax.com."
I am not sure what that is about either.
Okay, one more question.  Is there an easy way to break up all the sections/sub-sections into unique topics before or during inport into RoboHTML?  It seems that RH 8 really needs to have multiple topics versus one long topic, containing what was formerly a MS Word document.  What is the best approach to making that happen?
Overall, I am looking for a nice automated system, whereby I can take developer created documents (from protected MS Word templates) and bring them into RoboHelp HTML (version 8).  Hopefully, I will not have to break apart the entire MS Word document first, before bringing it into RH 8.
Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions from a newbie.
    -J

    Hi there
My own guess is that you created a project using one of the supplied templates. Specifically, the Application Help template. This template already has a CHM window defined that contains a link to the WidgetMax.com site. When a link to a web site is defined in a CHM window, the compiler will squawk about it because it cannot resolve the link to a local HTML page. So you may safely ignore the message.
As for importing the Word content, you have some decisions to make. How do you want to edit the content after you get it into RoboHelp?
After you import you will abandon Word and make any changes to the documentation only using RoboHelp HTML.
You will continue to maintain the Word document using Microsoft Word and you will want to update RoboHelp HTML to reflect the changes
Depending on the avenue you wish to take, you will have different options for splitting the Word content into individual topics. Once we know which option you wish to use we can offer more guidance.

  • Change favicon in Robohelp HTML 8

    Hello everyone,
    I need your help!
I want to change the default favicon that is generated and replace it with my own.
I created one with the same dimensions (48x48) and saved it as whstart.ico replacing the original in my project's folder.
I also tried by changing the default whstart.ico from the following location:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe RoboHelp 8\RoboHTML\WebHelp5Ext\template_skin.
Neither of these ways worked. Could someone point out what i am doing wrong?
    Regards,
    Kate

    Hi there
This is just a shot in the dark, but if you open the start page of your WebHelp using Windows Notepad, near the top you should find a line that reads:
    document.write("<link REL=\"SHORTCUT ICON\" href=\
I'm wondering if things would change if you converted the SHORTCUT ICON to lower case so it looks instead like this:
    document.write("<link REL=\"shortcut icon\" href=\
Willam, what are your thoughts on this?

  • RoboHelp HTML 8 Search problem

I have a single (non-merged) RoboHelp 8 HTML project in which I cannot seem to get Search working correctly.
I expected to see a box into which I can type a search term and a blank pane below the Contents/Index/Search/Glossary bar where search results would appear.  Instead, I get the following when I generate WebHelp:
This problem appears in IE 6, IE 7, Firefox 3.0, and Firefox 3.5, all of which our customer base uses.  I'm using RoboHelp 8 on a Windows PC with XP Pro 2002, SP3.
In the Project Settings/General dialog, I have the default settings for the Stop List and the Always Ignore List selected.  For "Add new keywords to" I have "Index File (HHK)" selected, and "Binary Index" is selected.
When generating WebHelp, I have the following set:
General selections:  Under "Additional Options," "Apply to all Topics," "CSS" is selected, with the correct CSS name displayed.  "Add Mark of the Web" is selected.
Navigation selections:  For Toolbar Buttons, Contents, Index, Search, Glossary are selected.  For Search Options, "Enable Highlight Search Results" is selected.
Navigation Pane Preferred Format selection is Pure HTML.  (We tried DHTML/HTML but that resulted in an empty nav pane and a nonfunctional index.)
Optimize Speed For:  Web Site (Internet)
    Publish:  Republish All.
What are we doing wrong?  I'm totally stumped and I can't seem to find any help on this issue anywhere.  Thanks!

    Hi there
    Please do expound.

To my knowledge this option only affects the output when you view things locally, as in when you are testing the output immediately after generating. Are you saying here that it somehow affected things after you uploaded the files to the server?

  • RoboHelp HTML Version 8 multiple skins in merged projects?

    Hello,
Is it possible to brand different pages in a merged help project w/ different skins, or do you have to use only one skin for the entire project?
    Thank you,
    -Jerod

    Welcome to our community
Skins are used to control the look and feel of the output created by Projects. That means all topics and not individual topics.
You could use CSS to control the way specific pages appear if you like. Perhaps that will help to differentiate them?

  • Generating hlp files in RoboHelp HTML

Is it possible to generate .hlp files from RoboHelp HTML version 9? We're generating help files for an older program that only uses .hlp or .chm files. I've only been able to generate .hlp files from RoboHelp for Word, and I don't really want to use it any more. But I haven't been able to generate .hlp files from RoboHelp HTML.
    Thanks.

    Hello PP
I'll be happy to hazard a guess as to why RoboHelp doesn't "do" WinHelp. It has to do with the history of RoboHelp. Way back around 1992 or so, RoboHelp existed largely as a plug-in to Microsoft Word that made it a lot easier to create WinHelp files. Basically it was a set of macros that formatted the arcane coding necessary inside Word documents that made things work for the WinHelp compiler.
HTML emerged later on and the first version of RoboHelp HTML was born. This created an entirely new format and an entirely new application (RoboHelp HTML or RoboHTML) was born. HTML help was the new kid on the block. As such, I'm guessing the developers were sort of watching to see if or how much it would "catch on".
So the application code bases were totally different. And remain so to this day. As Microsoft has taken measures to try and dissuade folks from using WinHelp, I'm sure RoboHelp for Word is likely on life support and probably has been for some time. RoboHelp for Word and RoboHelp HTML work in totally different ways. And given the fact Microsoft wants WinHelp gone, it simply doesn't make any sense to expend effort on making RoboHelp HTML capable of outputting WinHelp.

  • RoboHelp HTML 7 Not Appearing In Windows 7 Start Menu

I have W7, 64Bit. When I run RH7 HTML, it never appears in my recent list of programs run in the Start Menu.  Other programs do, but RH7 does not. I have my Start menu properties set at the highest number of recent programs and jumps allowed. I also cleared many of my recent programs so room could be made for it to appear.
Not sure if this is a RoboHelp 7 question or a Windows forum question. Just thought I'd see if anyone else ran into the same issue.
    Thanks
    Shawn

    Hi Shawn
I think I'd ask the question as well in a Windows forum just to be on the safe side.
Additionally, I suppose it's possible that some type of special coding is required for applications to register themselves with Windows.
Out of curiosity, you are able to make Windows 7 work with RoboHelp 7? I ask because I never could on my own Windows 7 64 bit system. I ended up installing the Microsoft Virtual Machine with XP mode to do that.
I would also encourage you to report as a Bug to Adobe. While I'm pretty certain it won't have any effect on seeing a patch emerge for RoboHelp 7, it will at least put the issue on the radar for Adobe to monitor with any future versions of RoboHelp.
And as a last item, you may wish to configure your Taskbar so that you have the Quick Launch bar. That makes it super easy to launch items. Ether that or try pinning the item. I'm not all that fond of pinning yet.

  • RoboHelp HTML X5: Merged help not displaying ToC

    Hi All:
Hoping someone can help me here.
I have been generating merged help for some time now w/o problems. But got this problem today after compiling a particular project after a 15-month gap. When I compiled the parent/master project, the ToC displayed the child projects and the Information Bar displayed the following message:
"To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this  file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click  here for options..."
I ignored the message and clicked the child projects to check if they displayed correctly. Each child project opened new instance of IE - this has not happened before. The last time I complied this parent project, everything worked fine and child projects opened within the same browser instance.
Secondly, when I right-clicked the Information Bar message and chose to Allow Blocked Content, the ToC disappeared.
Just in case this is relevant, my employer replaced all our PCs last month and all software had to be reinstalled.
Could this be because of the new version of IE? (My old machine may have had an older version.) Or the fact that I have not installed the updates to Robohelp X5? (I keep getting the message that the Macromedia server is down.) I have not activated the product yet either.
    Would appreciate any advice/clues.
    Thanks in advance
    Sophie

    Hi there
Usually you can prevent that message from appearing by enabling Mark Of The Web (MOTW) in the WebHelp generation options. The unfortunate part about that is you stated X5 and X5 didn't offer that option. So the next best thing you can do is to configure IE so it doesn't present the Yellow Information Bar. You do this by opening the Internet Options for IE. Click the Advanced tab and scroll to the Security section. Place a check mark in the option "Allow active content to run in files on My Computer".
Note that this only affects your own computer. If you are planning on having your end users copy the WebHelp files to their local C drives, you will have to instruct them to perform the same steps. But if you are uploading your content to a Web Server, they should not encounter this issue.

  • My Robohelp html 8 project won't open after one warning and error message

I'm currently using Robohelp HTML 8 and when I open my project  I first get the following message:
After I click OK, I get this error message:
The project won't open after that. When I look ate my files they seem to be intact even though the message says the folder is missing from
    Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Joy

    Hi Joy
Unless I'm mistaken, K would be a network drive, no?
Unfortunately RoboHelp is only one of a host of applications that doesn't fare well if you try to make edits to a project while it resides on a network drive.
Try copying the project to your local C drive. Perhaps create a folder named Projects and copy your project to a folder named Primo Intranet inside that folder so it looks like this:
    C:\Projects\Primo Intranet
Once you do this, try opening your project again and you will likely have better luck.

    Welcome to our community
Have you tried right-clicking the toolbars and ensuring you are seeing the Version Control toolbar?

  • Trouble incorporating Captivate movies into RoboHelp HTML projects

This is for RH 7 HTML.
I have been trying for quite a while now to add some Captivate tutorial-type videos to my help projects. I have recently been able to do this, however, the video additons greatly increased the size of my help file (it went from probably 7 or 8 MB up to 29 MB).
Here's how I added the movies.
Created a new topic just for the multimedia movie
Inserted the video (which was saved as an .SWF - Flash - file, since this is what the help file instructs you to do) and added it to the new topic
Created a link to this new topic in the topic from which I wanted to launch the video and chose to have the video open in a new window
Saved everything and tested it out to make sure the video would run when called
The video runs OK, though it is a little on the large side and is still a bit blurry/fuzzy. I've also had to provide special instructions to any users who wish to view the videos (maximize the RH display window, make sure the resolution on the monitor is set to at least 1024 x 768, choose to allow blocked content if prompted, etc) So, the main questions I have are,
What's the best way to add these videos to a help file without having the file size go through the roof and so they'll still display properly (clear and legible)?
Is there a smaller, more compressed format that can be used that will still allow for a clear display?
Should I embed the videos in the actual help file or place them somewhere else and link to them externally?
I would greatly appreciate any insight, advice, and expertise in this area, since my manager is a huge proponent of having these videos incorporated into the help files.
Thanks very much in advance for any guidance you can provide.
    Sincerely,
    Dave

    Hi Dave
Hopefully Willam won't mind my chiming in here.
When you publish a project from Captivate as SWF, you also have an option to allow Captivate to create an HTML page for you. In fact, the option is typically enabled by default and you have to specifically disable it. At that point Captivate warns you that the movie may not display correctly if you do this.
So if you want the HTML page all set up, you just leave that option selected in Captivate. Then in RoboHelp, you import both the Captivate created HTML page as well as any files such as SWF or FLV you need.
    Hopefully this helps... Rick

  • Does RoboHelp HTML 7 run on Windows 7?

Does RoboHelp HTML 7 run on Windows 7? Note that we use SourceSafe for multiple authors.

    Hi there
I'm sure there are exceptions, but I wasn't able to make it run on my own Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. At least not in Windows 7. I did make it run but only by installing the Virtual Machine for XP. What that does is install a virtual Windows XP environment that you may use to operate RoboHelp 7.
Unless you can do that you are probably going to need to upgrade RoboHelp to continue working with it on Windows 7. Additionally, maybe it will work if Windows 7 is the 32 bit version. Not sure.

  • Import InDesign files into RoboHelp HTML

    Hello,
My company is moving toward online help. We currently use InDesign to author our manuals and then export them to pdf for publication. I've been on the phone with Adobe trying to see if there's a way to easily import InDesign into RoboHelp. We're on an older version of RoboHelp, so I'm told this is possible, but I can't get any help until we buy RoboHelp9. I know that we can import our pdfs into RoboHelp--I'm just wondering if there's a way to import InDesign files directly into RoboHelp. Has anyone tried to do this? Anyone have any suggestions? It seems these two programs should play nice together, doesn't it?
    Louley

    Hi there
To my knowledge it is not possible to accomplish. I've been using RoboHelp since 1992 and I've never seen it done.
The only way I can fathom it working would be if InDesign could save as an HTML page. Then import the HTML. Or possibly produce a PDF from InDesign, then import that. But even importing the PDF may not give you the results you want.
