G4 quicksilver and tiger video choppy

I inherited a G4 quicksilver 867 mhz. I added ram to bing it up to 512mb. Also went from OS X 10.2.8 to Tiger (10.4.10). Heres my problem. Before I upgraded it I could pull video from a dv camera and edit it with imovie. Video was very smooth. Now after the upgrade to Tiger video in any program is very choppy.

No, not normal, but which G4 is it? How much RAM does it have?
Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
    * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
    * Built-in FireWire
    * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
    * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
    * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

  • 400mhz Imac and Tiger Video Jitter

I have 10 ruby 400nhz Imacs that are having Tiger installed on. The screen seems to jitter on all of them after the install. Is there an update or setting that will fix this problem?

    Tim Powell1...
One thing to remember is that Tiger really needs a computer with 32MB of video memory to do the video display any justice. Not that this is a requirement to run Tiger, it is highly recommended to possibly avoid issues like yours. You may try in reducing your color rate from millions to thousands and see if that will help or just read on for other ideas...
Now beyond that issue there can be some issues with interference caused by fluorescent lighting, DC brick items, motors, or incoming "dirty" power that may exaggerate your problem.
My old cell phone charger and my little desk fan made my eMac display act a bit funky till I located them further away from the computer. The fan actually needed to be on a different circuit because it was motorized.
I also recall another local user complaining his was doing about the same, and come to find out his 50 watt halogen lamp was the problem. We got his issue under control by removing that item completely for an item with a common light bulb in it. Thing here is that "speciality lighting" (reqiring special bulbs) may contain a baliast or a transformer that can affect your display.

  • G4 Quicksilver and Tiger 10.4.6

Hello-I am installing Tiger 10.4.6 from 10.2 This is a new unopened version of 10.4.6- Installed the driver and clicked restart as instructed and the G4 has been "thinking" for 30 minutes now. Is this a typical wait? Not sure if i should force quit and try again. I appreciate any assistance.

  • Netflix, HBO Go, ABC Tv app on my apple tv take a long time to download my videos and they are choppy, how can I resolve this issue? My apple TV is running off of WiFi in my apartment.

Netflix, HBO Go, ABC TV along with other apple TV apps, take a very long time to download the video and they are choppy when running. My apple TV runs off of WiFi in my apartment. When trying to download updates, it take a long time and then a video screen with "This Update was not Successful. Apple TV couldn't be downloaded at this time. Try again later." What can I do to resolve this issue? I purchased this apple TV in May 2013 new.

That will be an issue with the network
What is your current connection via speedtest.net?
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general -network)
Since you are in an apartment the local wifi network is more prone to interference, try ethernet

  • Choppy and stuttering video streaming on FF but works perfect on Chrome

I use both FIrefox and Chrome together and although I love almost everything about firefox, what frustrates me the most is the constantly lagging video streaming. I have the latest Firefox version (ver 26) and the hardware acceleration is disabled. The videos even in multiple tabs will run perfectly smoothly in chrome but if I try n run even 2 or more videos in firefox, it will start hanging and the video will start stuttering. Any way this can be remedied?

    Hey phoenixrock!
Thanks for creating a question. I'll do my best to assist you! Upon taking a long at your system details, it seems like you have two Flash plugins installed.
    *11.9 r900
    *12.0 r0
I'm assuming this is creating compatibility issues. That's probably why you're lagging. Follow the instructions listed http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html#main_Download_the_Adobe_Flash_Player_uninstaller from Adobe's website.
Note: You may have to reinstall Flash by going to www.get.adobe.com/flashplayer.

  • Problems with creating a 1080p video - Choppy

    Hey guys,
I am new to this forum and video editing so please be patient and bare with me as I try and explain what the issue is. First and foremost I would like to say thank you for taking the time to read my question.
I have a gopro HD recorder which I used on my trip and recorded a bunch of movies. They were recorded in 1080P/30FPS.
I am able to play these on my MAC in any player, (I use VLC) and work fine - no lag what so ever.
I opening up Adobe Premiere Pro CS 5.5 and creating a new project as follows with following sequence settings (I've tried multiple ones)
AVCHD 1080P25 Anamorphic or AVCHD 1080P30 or AVCHD 1080P25
Once this is complete I add my video in with an MP3 as audio and a picture saved as JPEG to the first 20 seconds (Video is about 3 minutes long). So far everything is good. Also between the picture and the video I add a video transition.
When I export the video as H.264 1080P25 or H.264 1080P30 (PAL) I notice that after movie transitions from the JPEG to the actual video it becomes laggy and very choppy on all media players, including VLC, Quicktime.
This is were the problem is frustrating - If I remove the JPEG and video transition effect and just have the video with audio track and export with same settings above the video is absolutely fine. No lag what so ever.
So it seems that the JPEG is causing me issues. Has anyone experienced this and could point me in the right direction?
To be absolutely clear, the picture is about 500KB and size is 1280 * 960 JPEG.
The system I am using is
    Macbook Pro
    2.3Ghz I7 Quad
    8gb ram
    1gb dedicated video card
I don't think its my computer as I tested both video's (with and without the jpeg) on other machines and get the same results. The Video with the JPEG is choppy while the others play fine.
I would very much appreciate any assistance as I am trying to create a Video to send to all our supports for a rally we participated in.
Thanks so much again for taking the time to read my question.
    Kind regards,
    Milan

Ok, so now we know that what we were dealing with trully was a user error and I am sure that the part of it is you being new to PPro. The other part of it is general annoyance that one has to deal with, whenever complex output pipelines are involved. When you are using a professional application suh as PPro you are alowed a lot of flexibility. Unfortunately with this flexibility the possibility of error rockets skyhigh. This complexity is in no way helped by the fact that the output is handled by codecs from many different vendors all of which have different UIs and different ways they talk to the host app. QuickTime is terrible in this aspect as well. So you have to be very methodical.
Now that we know that there is really no bug with PPro concerning your issue, you may go ahead and chose any one of the codecs for output that are available and suitable. PPro even gives you presets. For example you can chose a Youtube preset as an option for H264 export. But you have to pay attention to the settings as it is very often so that even if you have correct settings in your Media Export window the framerate and the image dimensions might be different inside a codec settings that are accessible for some of them via the codec settings button, like in the picture below. You can see that even though settings are all matching inside the media export dialog they are not the same in the codec setting pop-up
At any rate look at the summary field and see that those settings match. Including both of them having the same field order (ie none as it is progressive footage in my example. Like below:
Anyway, as I said there are many things to go wrong. I feel that a lot of Operation Manual reading is in your future, meanwhile it will be better, perhaps, if you use iMovie which is pretty good for simple editing - the kind you seem to be doing - without to steep of a learning curve. I use it myself for some quick edits on the go.
    Hope it helps. Good luck.

  • Watching CNN and Yahoo videos with mplayer-plugin [SOLVED]

I had a hell of a time trying to view CNN videos (http://www.cnn.com) and Yahoo videos with mplayer-plugin (firefox) and didn't seem to find any solutions in a forum search.
    The following worked for me:
To get it working at all, I had to edit /etc/mplayerplug-in.conf and add/edit the following options:
    noembed=1
To get smooth video and sound without choppy playback, I had to add/edit the following options to /etc/mplayerplug-in.conf:
    cachesize = 1024
These value for cachesize will obviously vary depending on your internet connection.  But, with my DSL/broadband connection, the default cachesize of 512 was for some reason resulting in *very* choppy playback.  The cachsize of 1024 fixed everything.
I can now view CNN and Yahoo videos with no problem.
Just thought I'd share if anyone is having similar problems.

    Thanks

  • QuickTime Alternates in Quicktime 7.0.3 and Tiger 10.4.2

I have a co-worker that has been testing our QuickTime Streaming videos and he is running Mac OS 10.4.2 and QuickTime 7.0.3. On our QuickTime alternates created with Cleaner 6 he keeps getting an error message that QuickTime 5 needs to be installed. If I put in the direct rtsp URL to the movie without alternates he can view it fine.
Anyone else having the same problem?
Anyone know what might be causing this problem and if there are maybe issues with QuickTime 7.0.3 and Tiger that could be causing problems?

Cleaner hasn't been updated in at least a couple of years (all indications are that it's a dead product; the last version was a beta, never finalized) and does not recognize QuickTime 7 as a valid version. So he probably needs to use something else to handle the compression, though perhaps just avoid using a version preference setting in Cleaner might work (doubt it, though).

  • Studio Pro 1.5 and Tiger

I'm trying to burn a DVD using an old version of DVD Studio Pro (v. 1.5), but it keeps crashing whenever I try to "Build and Format Disc."
The "Build Disc" function works. I have the "VIDEO_TS" and "AUDIO_TS" folders and they play just fine on the Apple DVD Player. But I want to burn it on a disc but whenever I try it the application quits immediately.
I know I'm using an out of date version - but it's what I have...
I just recently updated to Tiger, and this is the first time I've tried creating a DVD since then. Are there compatibility problems with older versions of Studio Pro and Tiger?
I'm using an older machine as well. PowerPC G4 450mhz. I know that iDVD won't run on my machine, so I'm a little concerned about upgrading to a newer version of Studio Pro, even if I could afford it.
I have an older version of Toast (Titanium 5.2), but I've never tried burning DVD's with it. Studio Pro has always worked for me.
If I drop the VIDEO and AUDIO folders into a separate folder can I burn that directly using Apples built in CD burning tool? And will that create a DVD that will work on regular players?
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    450mhz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I wouldn't be at all surprised if there were some compatibility issues with v1.5 and Tiger... they are several years apart and Tiger uses very different underlying architecture than earlier versions from Jaguar's era.
If you can build a disc image from v1.5 then you could burn that using Toast, but as long as Toast is recent enough to list DVD in it's output options you should be OK.
If you can only build, and have the two folders sitting there, you can still use Toast. As I recall, you need to look in the 'Other' dropdown menu in that version of Toast, and select DVD from there. You need to ensure that this is a UDF disc (I can't now remember if that was in the advanced settings for Toast or listed in that drop down), and once set you drage the Audio_TS and Video_TS folder into the Toast window. As long as the disc you create is UDF, and that those two folders are at the root of the disc, then you should be OK to create a DVD that will play in a set top player.

  • DVI to Video Adapter and S-Video Cable = Flipping TV Screen

    Hello!
I attached my DVI & S-Video Cable to my television. Everything was fine, except when choosing different display resolutions, the TV screen would start flipping.
    THEN:
    • I removed the DVI to Video Adapter from the computer while it was still plugged into the TV.
Now, no matter what I have tried, I get a TV screen that flips.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Jeff

S-Video is the better of the two interfaces. Neither is very good when compared with a computer screen, which will have much higher resolution. I doubt you will notice much difference between S-Video and RCA Video but if you have the choice you might as well go S-Video.

  • Some problems with 3D with xorg 1.9.2-1 and xf86-video-intel 2.12.0-3

I have some problems with the upgrade to xorg 1.9.1-1 and xf86-video-intel 2.12.0-3. Glxgears does not run smoothly at all and I got 15-20 fps (instead of the normal 60 because intel should sync with the V refresh rate). Very curiously, these problems disapear if I move the mouse cursor somewhere in the screen. Then glxgears run smooth and I have indeed the expected 60 fps
There are no error messages and glxinfo say that 3D is indeed enabled.

Do you have problems with anything that's *not* glxgears?
I have indeed not seen other problems. Presently the only other software that I believe use openGL that I use is googleearth; which run fine. Could it be a problem with glxgears?

  • Internet access problems and viewing video on internet

I have very limited interet access most of the time.  I get a message: "You are not currently in an area that can handle data communication.  ..."  I have no problem with email and other features of the phone during this time.  The signal at the top of my phone says "GSM".  When I am able access the internet, it give me a different signal (can't remember what that is, however).  Even then, I cannot view most video clips, such as YouTube clips.  They will not load all the way.  It states, "Error has occurred in attempting to play media."  Help!

I have unlimited internet access, so that's not the problem.  Right when I got the phone, I replaced the original data card with a 4G card and enabled mass storage.  I have (since my first post) had more access capability by enabling the WiFi (da) which finds my wireless connection at home.  I've also been able to view a video clip, not successfully all the way through, however.  During viewing, the phone appears to crash, i.e. the screen goes white and then it takes 3-5 minutes for it to reboot.  This has also happened when the phone has not even been being used.   Also, as I was surfing the net, the phone asked if I wanted to enable Javascript which I did.  Is there anything else that I need to enable or do to the phone in order to have a more pleasant experience using the internet and viewing video clips?

  • My movies and music videos won't show up on screen, I can hear the sound but not see the video how do I fix this?

My movies and music videos won't show up on my computer screen, I can hear the sound but not see the video how do I fix this? I'm not sure what to do as far as turning my purchased movie into DVD goes either. I just want to put the movie onto a DVD disc but my itunes won't even show that I have a blank disc in the drive, I'm not sure what is wrong or how to fix this, any help at all would be much appreciated.

    Hi @anthony7722 ,
Thank you for your query, I will do my best to help!
I grasp that you uninstalled the Intel graphic driver and the catalyst control.  You reinstalled the Intel driver and now you can view and hear videos on the Internet but you are unable to set the resolution as high as previously.
When I checked the specifications for your notebook I see that you have switchable graphics.
Here are two links that I believe will help.
Overview of Switchable Graphics or Dual GPUs
Switchable Graphics on Notebooks Configured with Intel and ATI GPUs
Here is a link to HP Pavilion dv7-6150eb Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers
    Please try this process.
    1. Download the chipset driver, and both graphic drivers and save them  but do not install them yet
2, Delete the chipset driver and install the updated one.
    3. restart your notebook
4.Delete the Intel driver and install the updated one
    5. restart your notebook
    6. Delete the AMD driver and install the updated driver.
You should now have a Catalyst Control Center.
This should now allow you to use the higher graphic card which should support the higher resolution.
    I hope this helped.

  • New 27 iMAC keeps crashing iMovie and freezing videos on YouTube & Quicktime

We just got a new Sept 2013 iMac three days ago, purchased refurbished from the Apple Store online. The whole point of the purchase was to be able to use iMovie to thoroughly edit videos for our YouTube channel, use garage band, lots of internet surfing and video watching etc. We spent the extra dollars to get what we thought was the most improved version of the iMac with all the souped up specs in order to avoid any hassle and headaches from a lack of performance. Here's what we have:
    3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
27-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit display with IPS technology; 2560-by-1440 resolution
    8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM
1TB hard drive (We have only used 80 GBs of it so far, so plenty of space left)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M graphics processor with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
    720p Camera & Mic
    OS X 10.9
We're feeling a bit duped now as this seems to have turned out to just be a big expensive piece of junk. Here are our problems:
    - Firstly, thank goodness that we had our own Logitech HD camera/mic left over from our PC because the "HD camera" built in to the iMac is worse in quality than my old blackberry curve. Grainy, lack luster, mic has sharp and distant sound, really really bad and false advertisement.
    - In the middle of using iMovie (iMac came preinstalled with the newest one, i think its 10?), it will stop responding properly or will crash and close, we wont even have any other programs running.
    - When opening Quicktime to record a new video, in the middle of a recording or while the recording window is idle, it will start glitching - flashing between live footage and a freeze frame repeatedly. The only way to stop it is to quit out Quicktime and open again and try to record quickly, or in some cases we have to completely restart the iMac, which then still randomly in the middle of a recording or idle window it will continue to flash and glitch. (You can view an example here in the last minute of one of our videos, we tried to make it work and kept the take since we were doing our outro music dance, but it totally ***** when this happens randomly during our content portion and we have to redo recording. http://youtu.be/MAJzaEShJGw?t=4m34s )
    - When watching YouTube videos, the computer takes a while to respond to a command, like if we click on a certain part of the video, it will not load it until we press the pause/play button a few times and wait. Also at the beginning of a video it will start glitching and freezing again, similar to how we explained above in the quicktime, but faster.
If you are familiar with what could be the problem or have any advice, PLEASE HELP, we are concerned that after dropping so much money within just 3 days of use, this iMac is not performing flawlessly in the areas that we most needed and want to know if these issues are common and fixable or if its a defect that would require we send this thing back immediately. We did not get apple care and would hate to have wasted money that we really dont have on a glitchy crashing huge piece of junk.
Want to mention a few other pros and cons unrelated to our issues, for those who may be considering buying one too:

    - The Magic mouse is really great, particularly because of the scrolling and zooming gestures. (Though sometimes i accidentaly swipe in a browser and go back to a previous page losing any information that was input on the page i was originally on, for example, i had to retype this whole apple imac inquiry because i swiped backwards by mistake and the whole form cleared! annoying, wish the horizontal swipe navigated between tabs instead of going through the page view history.)
    - When the imovie is not crashing, after watching some tutorials and making a few vids, its a really greatly improved program from the '09 version we used to use. I import and edit videos much faster now, and footage does not freeze or take time to load while im dragging and dropping, it is immediately responsive.
    - Love using the Talk to text function (like Siri) by pressing "fn" twice. Use this to write long emails and papers with ease. Would like to see a "Speak" read back option that allows for text to be selected and read back (like Siri on iPad)
    CONS:
    - The text is SO small everywhere and there is no option to exactly set text size across the whole system, only option given is to set a different resolution which lessens the quality of the screen with pixelation, and some programs give you the option to set custom sized text in their individual preferences.
    - Sometimes in both iMovie & Garageband, simple automated functionality will stop working, for example in iMove, when certain screens or images are dragged and dropped to the work area by the activity bar (i dont know what else to call it, the line that rolls across during playback or stays put when pressing spacebar) usually, that screen or image will click into place to align with the activity bar and will highlight the bar yellow to further communicate that alignment before you drop it, but after extended use in a session, that snapping into alignment when adding items stops working. Or sometimes you can drag and drop the ends of a title screen to adjust/trim the clip, but after extended time that too stops responding and does not let the cursor turn into that arrow that allows you to trim or extend, until after many frustrated clicks or a quit and restart.
    - When sharing/exporting a video from iMovie, i would recommend unchecking the add to theatre option because it significantly extends the amount of time needed to complete the action and i found out the theatre is just like a video stream of your movies to be shared on icloud for easy access from your other devices (similar to the icloud photostream connected to iPhoto). It takes the time to make the video readily availabe in various sizes on the Mac server for easy access, which means it takes forever for your video to be exported to where you actually want it. This is not something we need and is not worth the wait time. (For example, last ime we left the theatre box checked, the progress status of the video was estimated to be completed in 351 minutes, and then 20 minutes later that somehow inclreased to 385 minutes, then duddenly it was done, so i think this add to theatre option also cause the progress status updates to go berzerk.)

Given the maximum RAM that model can use is 32GB, and the earlier release of that 27" mid-2013 iMac is nearly the same in most regards, you may note the listing of this slightly older iMac 27" is here in an Apple support document...
•iMac: How to remove or install memory:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1423#1
The images of where the RAM chips are located, behind a metal plate, should be similar in your iMac and the mid-2013 iMac 27" shown in images on that page. Note there are several models discussed.
You could take the computer to a certified Apple service facility (retail store, or specialist reseller) and pay them to do this, and buy the RAM from them, and you will pay for this at a retail level. If they do it, you'd want to be assured the computer did all the things you sought to cure by upgrading RAM, correctly without fault. Like run tests and stuff.... Or there's no reason to not go ahead (after confirming from Apple) that you could buy quality RAM and do this job yourself, citing the Apple page link I'd posted above.
    Contact Apple Support:
    http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
You'd have to obtain the correct RAM (as indicated in my earlier post, citing MacTracker) of suitable quality for use in a Macintosh computer, and the recommendation for a DIY is to get the kit from 'Other World Computing' OWC online at their site. You can talk to knowledgable sales staff at OWC about what you have and what you need, and to help they may ask for the product serial number.
This is OWC and they have the spec RAM required for your iMac 27" model; double-check info:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/iMac/2012_27/DDR3L
Since yours is an Apple Refurbished model it will have a different number series. Unlike those in a retail store, because Apple does that to tell what ones they refurbished; refurbs I bought online were like that.
With questions during the first three months, you can get 'support' under the initial 90-day span of ownership of the new (and certified) Apple refurbs bought online; the other part of that is 'service' for 1 year. Call a nearest retail Apple Store, to set a genius appointment; or go online, and start the process of reporting your issue, while you still have some kind of warranty on the device. They can diagnose the issues you cite and tell you if you can upgrade the RAM (as you likely can) then you can buy and install the RAM yourself and probably pay less than 1/2 the retail rate, if you get some from OWC. A diagnosis is free if the Genius looks into it, but you'd need to set an appointment & lug the iMac to their store; protected from weather/shock.
If you want to extend the complementary service to three years (less the included 90-days) and add two years of AppleCare service, that is an affordable option of about $170. For a total of three years coverage.
    {If you had a 21.5-inch iMac the RAM would require a service department visit where they use a different method to install the RAM upgrade. Those are built differently than the 27-inch iMac.}
There is a bit of detailed important information in the Apple link on how to upgrade the iMac RAM. There is a certain amount of RAM installed already and these chips would likely be removed if you get matching sets of new RAM to upgrade the capacity. And no matter what some say, there is a reason why they can be upgraded with more. Even with Mavericks OS X 10.9.x and its 'memory compression' etc, it would gladly accept all the RAM upgrade chips it could swallow. (Behind metal screen, mid-bottom iMac 27")
You may need to consider questions about applications that use system resources separate from those about whatever issues your iMac seems to exhibit. There may be some other cause of the video and iMovie symptoms, but more RAM won't hurt given the beast you bought can use 32GB and it has 8.
And if it seems too much to handle, you have 14 days from date of
purchase to take it back. Contact them ahead of then, if you do.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Good luck & happy computing!
