Grid questions (noob here, so pardon my stupidity)

i am making an RPG game (relly cheap game) and i wanted to know, how do u put images in a grid format, like can u do that with a JPanel? also, in a grid layout in JFrame, can u put images in it? can u overlay the images with a JPanel with a transparent background? my code is going to be similar witht he marine biology case study(i have a locatable class, location class, etc)

what i meant is that for gridlayout to work, u need a component, and can u
make a pic a component? also, can a JPanel have somehting like a
GridLayout? how do u put pictures in a gridlike formation in a JPanel? I still don't understand your question.
Did you read the link on Using Layout managers? Did you read the section on Using Labels?
You create a JPanel and assign it a GridLayout. Then you create a label add a picture to it and then add the label to the panel.
Did you look at the code I gave you for drawing an image on a panel? You specify the x, y coordinates when you draw the image. So there is no reason you couldn't change the code to draw multiple images beside one another. The question is why would you go to all that effort when the LayoutManager does this for you.

  • New Mac User, Please Pardon the Stupid Questions...

Hi. As the title says, please pardon the stupid questions. I'm a Mac noobie. I got my iMac G5 from my aunt who has always been a mac user. The logic board went out on this one and I had it repaired so now I'm entering the world of mac.
I'd like to know how to upgrade the software on my machine. I'm currently running 10.3.9 which is Panther but I'd like to upgrade. My question is, what software is the newest I can upgrade to and where can I get the software? Is it available for download or do I need to go to a store to purchase it? Also, I currently have itunes 4. I downloaded itunes 10 but it wouldn't install. I get the error message "the installer package "install itunes" cannot be opened the bill of materials for this package can not be found"... Is this due to my OS version? Please help... Thanks

You have to buy it, you can't download it. See if the Apple Store sell it,but I think you will have to get it from eBay or Craig's List. Just make absolutelt sure it's the black retail disc, not grey! Also, you cannot run Snow Leopard on your iMac, it only works on intel machines.
    Amazon have some for sale.

  • Using the Assets panel [was: The most basic stupid question on here]

I am very new to web design, self taught on sites like GoDaddy and Microsoft Office Live, but there's no access to root directory and adding affiliate banners won't work. So here I am. Problem #1 so far is how do I get stuff into my assets. I've messed around for a while w/ no success. It can't be that hard. Someone out there please give this "newbie" the instructions for getting text, images and stuff from my computer into the assets box on Dreamweaver. I'll have nightmares about "dreamweaver" till I get this figured out.  Thanks a million in advance for answering such a basic (almost stupid) question

When you sign into your hp webOS account device information is sent back to HP servers to basically register the device to you. This in a since does all the registration for you. You will then receive an email that will help you confirm your email address for your profile and validate it.

  • Questions About Here

    Hi
I have some questions about "here maps" and "here drive"
    Here Maps & Here Drive
I first don't get really the difference between these 2 apps, Here maps seems to do driving directions just like Here Drive. Seems almost redundant.
    Here Drive
Can I organize my favorites into folders?
Can I find all routes(Google Maps will show you a list of all routes and then you choose one)
If I run into a detour how can I tell the here drive to find me a different way?
Does Traffic Updates Use a lot of data? How accurate is it?
Does Cortana Work With Here Drive
How often Does the maps get updated? Do you get a notification about new map updates?
Anyone compare Here Drive vs a Garmin Device?
    Can I backup my favorites?
Cortana has "Places" can those be synced with "here drive", basically "here drive" gets launched but it does not seem like favoirties are shared.

Somehow. Actually, HERE Drive is a spin-off of HERE Maps, to faciliate and concentrate on the voice-guided car navigation. It is a different entry-point into the various HERE apps.

You get a notification in your phone when you open one of the HERE apps. In the past, we got updates around every quarter, sometimes half a year.

  • Here's a really stupid question re servers.

I am a techie on individual computers with no experience on servers. The aim is to have a server for 5 computers with the following features- ALL files stored on the server, e-mail server, print sharing, remote access away from the office for both mail and files.
Now all of that is possible I know with apple and I can learn easy enough. What i don't understand is setting up the mail server.
I currently use "oneandone" where my 10 domains are held with about 15 pop3 e-mail accounts that go to individual computers (expensive business)
If I buy the apple os server, do I no longer need the mail services of "oneandone"?? I'm confused as to what the pop or smtp server names if they no longer host the mail..Also if it means you can set up unlimited e-mail accounts at your domain, how does the server know its your domain (i.e. can i not just set up [email protected])
Clearly thats a stupid question and very basic but I'm hunting for an answer!
    Thanks so much.

Thanks. Tim. point taken and duly noted. On the mail-
so that means all i need to do is register the
domains and simply pay for the domain names on a
yearly basis. Then I ask the domain registration
company to point MX records to my server and thats
it? (of course..then I set up the server to host all
    the mail..)?
That's it. If you use a cheap DIY registration company then you will get access to your own DNS records and so add the MX record yourself. You may want to consider a secondary MX record for when the main server is down - dyndns.org offer this type of service or maybe the domain registration company can offer it. The secondary server service just holds the mail until it can deliver it to the main server.
It's certainly worth spending a bit of time with a temporary server and a few test domains until you understand the server config and have tested everything out.

  • Ok here's a semi stupid question

If I want to save stuff on cd which ones do I buy? CD-R or CD-RW?

    Hello,
If you want to save something to a CD, you can use either CD-R or CD-RW.
    The difference is:
CD-R: You can write to it one time and whatever you write is permanent (cannot be changed / updated). But, if you use a program that supports "Multi-Session" burning, then you can add to the disk, you just cannot change what is already there. But, most of the burning that you do from OS X is single-session, so you write something to the disk, and it is done. So, basically, put whatever you want on it the first time, and as much as will fit, then burn.
CD-RW: Basically the same thing, with one major exception. You can completely erase the disk, or erase files that are on the disk and replace them with updated versions or completely different contents. But, you can only do this a limited number of times (I think the average max. is around 100 times, but it could vary by the disk).
    I hope this helps.

  • Noobie here, questions with Mail Application

I wanted to ask if you could use the same mail account into 3 different computers. Lets say that i have a laptop, adesktop and another desktop at work (all macs).
Can i register the same POP info (from gmail) into all 3 computers? Lets say that i receive a brand new email in my gmail inbox, would i be able to see it from all 3 different computers?

As Jeffrey said, you certainly could if it was a normal POP account. You don’t need IMAP just to be able to download the same messages on all computers — you’d need IMAP if you wanted full synchronization between them, though.
Problem is, Gmail POP access doesn’t work like a normal POP mail server would. Here are some of its idiosyncrasies:
    1. Messages downloaded by any conventional POP mail client are marked as downloaded at the server (but not as read on the web), and no longer available to either the same or any other POP mail client.
    2. To make already downloaded messages available for POP access again, you must go to Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP page, select Enable POP for all mail, and click Save Changes, which causes everything (and I mean everything) still on the server to be downloaded again.
    3. The Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings have absolutely no effect on the messages stored on Gmail’s server. Gmail ignores any requests to delete messages from the server made by a POP client. What happens to the messages on the server after a POP client has downloaded them is determined by Gmail’s Settings > Forwarding and POP > When messages are accessed with POP setting alone. In the case of Gmail (and only in that case), I recommend turning OFF Remove copy from server in Mail, so that Mail doesn’t even try to remove any messages from the server, regardless of whether you do actually want already downloaded messages to be removed from the server after some time or not.
    4. Messages sent using the web interface will be downloaded by your POP mail client as if they were received messages. Although this may seem weird, it's good because it allows archiving all messages locally in Mail, regardless of how they were sent — as long as you don't access the same Gmail account with more than one POP mail client, that is. You can set up a rule in Mail to automatically route those messages to the appropriate Sent mailbox (or to any other mailbox for that matter) if that's what you want.
    5. Messages sent using a POP/SMTP mail client such as Mail are also treated as if they were incoming messages for POP purposes, just as in #4. What prevents them from being downloaded is that Gmail marks them as already downloaded immediately. Since they’re on the server nonetheless, already sent messages would be downloaded together with all the other messages on the server if proceeding as described in #2.
    6. A particular case of #5 are messages sent to yourself. Instead of putting a copy of the sent message in the server’s Inbox and making it available for download, both the sent and the “received” message on the server are actually one and the same, and hence, cannot be downloaded via POP for the reason explained in #5.
    7. Gmail allows POP accounts to be set up in a special way that avoids some of these issues while introducing others. If you only need POP access to the last 30 days of mail, you can configure Mail in “recent mode”, as described in How should I use POP on mobile or multiple devices?, i.e. by typing “recent:” (including the colon but not the quotes) at the beginning of the User Name field (not in the Email Address field) in Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information. Configuring the account this way would allow Mail to download messages marked by Gmail as already downloaded (and download messages sent to yourself in particular), but it would also cause all sent messages (not just messages sent to yourself or through webmail) to be downloaded as if they were received messages.

  • Noob Here With a question

I'm new here so I thought I would say HI to all.  I'm a self taught computer guy and late to the newer AMD cpu's.
    I did a little searching and ordered a MSI K8N Neo2-F.
I was wondering what a good/average CPU would be for this. I still need to study up on these but I was looking at a 3700+ 1mb L2 Cache.
Also What can I slavage from the stuff below. It's all 6mo. old except the memory and video card which is brand new.

You should be able to use everything. Obviously the chip and cooler will stay the the NF-7
As far as chip goes, the 3700 San Diego chip should suit you fine for what you requested as a good average CPU.

  • Probably a stupid question but here goes....

    Hello all,
Interested in Airport Time Capsule for backing up my iMac and MacBook and MacBook Pro. Can this product replace the current wireless router? As in I currently have an orange livebox for my broadband and can I get rid of this and use this as my dial up box?
    Thanks!

The Airport Time Capsule does function as a wireless router.
However, the Airport Time Capsule does NOT have a built in DSL modem.
Your Orange Livebox does have a built in DSL modem.
Therefore - no - you cannot replace your Orange Livebox with an Airport Time Capsule. What you can do is cable the Airport Time Capsule to the ethernet port on your Orange LiveBox.

    Hi cmhaah06
See the iMac time line at Wikipedia > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac

The last G5 PPC iMac was built in Late 2005 and everything after that is considered an Intel iMac.

  • I know.. not another film look question, but here is goes...

Hi all i hope you can help me here.
Im used to doing safety, corporate, induction videos so Ive never been interested in getting the "film look" But now Ive got a music video to do and i really don't want it to look interlaced.
Now i did some test on my HVX200 25p, and read up on it a little. Which brought me to my question.
I know that when shooting with real film cameras AND HD 25p cameras there is the rule not to pan very fast because it becomes jittery. But when i did my tests outside with my HVX200 25p PAL on a tripod (no panning) my footage seem a whole lot more jittery that film movies i see on tv. Its so jittery i cant use the footage! im to scared to do the music video on 25p.
So now i want to know, am i doing something wrong? Is the shutter speed or the way you capture in FCP got anything to do with the jittery? Or is 25p just that jittery?
Another question. Does anybody have some tips to get a better look and feel to my music video? plug ins? or whatever?
Thanks so much for your replies.
    Andre Meyer

    Hi Meyer,
The reason I said your video still looks jittery is because you have not graded or used any additional adaptors on your cam. Turning on a progressive shutter alone will just make your VIDEO look like 24/25P video! The movement is greatly exaggerated! The point I was trying to make is that once you have graded your footage and if you are lucky enough to use a 35mm adaptor, much of that jitteriness (if that’s a word?!) will not be so noticeable. Remember, if it goes away completely, you are back to square one almost! Its about how acceptable you can get with the 3 components I was talking about in my previous post.
I dont own an HVX200, but I have a V1E (not as good as the HVX200) and I find the cinema Gamma not that great as a default.. I have to tweak it quite a lot to achieve the all important contrast and saturated colours. As for your HVX, just have a play until u get a look u like. The Cinema Gammas on the Cheaper Canons are dreadful and make the cam lose all their contrast! I guess this varies a lot with the mid-priced prosumer cams?!
You don’t need to own a 5D MkII (an ergonomic disaster in my opinion unless u have the full rail kit!) to have that 35mm DOF control. There are quite a few 35mm adaptors out there that have attachments for many types of video cameras. There are users in this forum I think that use these types of adaptors with the HVX200’s. However, such equipment is not cheap.. and of course a good quality stills lens’s are not exactly cheap either!
    So to summarise:
    1. Use a progressive frame rate 24/25P
    2. Colour Grade to film... Best bet is to use Apple Colour... this is a really good colour corrector which has various preset that’s you can tweak and work pretty good as the film look. Of course you will need to experiment to get the effect u want. Alternatively, you can use Magic Bullet Looks.. which can be use used as a Plug-in to FCP, and is like Apple Colour on Steroids! It doesn’t offer the same amount of control as Color, but has some really interesting presets that can be easily tweaked.. and the good things is, this is all done without leaving FCP.. so its quick.
    3. If you want to go the whole way and go for a 35mm adaptor.. then do your home work. Do you currently own a select of still lenses? Canon L series or Nikon Pro series? Of course u don’t need the pro lenses, but in this set up the quality of your stills lens becomes really critical! Take a look on YouTube and see the effect these adapter give, they can be quite amazing! Be prepared to spend over £2500 for the adaptor alone!
    4. And of course, remember technique when shooting like this.. these adaptors do stop down your camera, you will probably have less light to play with. When u r tracking etc, DOF is really critical and can be difficult to master at first.
I don’t have any 35mm adapter, i try to achieve the film look by using steps 1 and 2..the result, well... its ok but often means I have to mess about with camera distances sometimes to achieve a decent DOF. Swings a roundabouts!

  • Newbie Grid Questions - Windows 2008 v11gr2

    Hi all
As stated I am completely new to Oracle and have managed to do an single instance install and am now attempting a Grid and then RAC install.
I have created 2 VMs and 5 disks. During the Grid install I stamped the disks so that they could be used for ASM and put them all in a disk group called Data. I selected External redundancy.
In the previous documentation I have seen that during the Grid install you select where to put your voting files and OCR files but this never happened for me, is this correct? Also how can I check I have clusterware installed correctly? The documentation says that the verification utility runs automatically and I think this happened as the Grid install completed successfully.
One concept I am having troubles with is if the clusterware is installed as part of Grid then why do we need RAC?
My questions are probably very general and cover a lot, but any help in the right direction would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
In the previous documentation I have seen that during the Grid install you select where to put your voting files and OCR files but this never happened for me, is this correct? If you selected to Oracle ASM as the storage option for the OCR and voting disk files, then the Oracle Automatic Storage Management Configuration Assistant (ASMCA) configures Oracle ASM as part of the installation process.
If you did not select Oracle ASM as the storage option for the Oracle Clusterware files, then you must start ASMCA manually after installation to configure Oracle ASM.
There are two ways of storing the shared Oracle Clusterware files:
Oracle ASM: You can install Oracle Clusterware files (OCR and voting disks) in Oracle ASM disk groups.
OCFS for Windows: OCFS for Windows is the only other supported cluster file system that you can use to storage of Oracle Clusterware and Oracle RAC files on Microsoft Windows platforms.
Starting with Oracle Database 11g release 2 (11.2) and Oracle RAC 11g release 2 (11.2), using DBCA or OUI to store Oracle Clusterware or Oracle Database files on raw devices is not supported.
Also how can I check I have clusterware installed correctly? The documentation says that the verification utility runs automatically and I think this happened as the Grid install completed successfully. You can use Cluster Verification Utility.
The cluvfy stage -post crsinst command to check the specified nodes after installing Oracle Clusterware.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e16794/cvu.htm
One concept I am having troubles with is if the clusterware is installed as part of Grid then why do we need RAC?I do not understand what you meant with GRID is grid infrastructure (software Oracle ) or grid computing (concept).
    If is concept check this..
