GS70 Fit & Finish

Hi guys!
I've had my GS70 for 2 weeks now and since I had it I've been using it as a CPU.
For the first time today, I took the laptop out and took it with me to work.
I noticed a couple of flaws in build and finish. I work in final line quality in the auto industry and things like this I am very anal about.
1. The monitor/lid does not line up with the keyboard/base. It seems to be slanted towards the right.
2. The rubber strip underneath the screen does not look like it was ever applied/installed. Mine is peeling off.
3. The center hinge is wavy. Really really wavy... Like the metal/plastic is warped.
Just want to know if you guys have the same defect on your units. If yes, what did you do?
I just wanted to know if any of you guys have the same issues.

  • Why doesn't my non-linear curve fit finish?

I am working with an experiment that gives me X- and Y- data that I need to fit to a theoretical model (somewhat involved). I use to do this in matlab using the "lsqcurvefit", which works fine,
but for varous reasons I need to do this in LabView instead.
So, first thing I did was to make a vi which is my theoretical model. I throw in my X-data and get the Y data out of it.
This vi works fine of it's own, but now I want to do my fitting by calling the model-vi from the Nonlinear curve fit.vi. I enter the same initial parameters, termination conditions, upper- and lower boundaries as in the matlab code, but no matter what, after some 100 function calls, the curve fit interrupts and tells me:
"Error -20041 occurred at NI_Gmath.lvlib:Nonlinear Curve Fit LM.vi
    Possible reason(s):
Analysis:  The system of equations cannot be solved because the input matrix is singular."
I have tried to locate the problem at varoious levels but I get confused when I start to look into the nonlinear curve fit vi, I just lose myself in tons of block-diagrams.. Can anyone see what my problem is? I'd sure appreciate it! I added the necessary files. Main vi: langevin fit. vi, then open the data.txt.
    Thanks

Your model function does not produce anything resembling your data. As a first step, graph the data using your initial guesses, here's how it would look.
Here' the data and your initial guess on the same graph. You need to find initial guesses so the output resembles your data.
My best guess is that your model is faulty. It is very hard to debug, because it is a mess: deeply stacked sequence structures and unneeded local variables. Also the model parameter constants should be provided via the "data variant" input instead of a global variable. You have a weird mix of datatypes. Why is half of the stuff EXT instead of DBL for no reason?
I would also highly advise NOT to color your own VIs light yellow. Don't make them look like system tools!
I am busy today, but maybe I can have a stab at it tonight. Good luck!

  • IPhone 5 fit & finish quality is not good

Anyone else noticed that their iPhone 5's quality of workmanship is not great? I just unboxed my iPhone 5, activated it and while inspecting it closely, the aluminum bevel already has two little dings. I bought it at ATT through a pre-order via mail. Could this be their distribution center handlers who scracthed the bevel while installing the SIM card? Upon further inspection I see an imperfection on the aluminum part near the glass which seems impossible for a nick to happen. I thought these things were precision milled? The black phone looks a lot cheaper with the powder coating imo and I'm seeing tiny imperfections.
Anyone seeing this with their new iPhone 5?

    Camera is not functioning

This new Newer Tech battery. Has someone bought it and used it? How does it compare to the original Apple battery.. Use? And fit/finish?

I need a new battery or my 1.67 AL PowerBook

never mind. I bought a MacBook Pro

  • Getting new MacBook Pro, what to look for once i get it?

i'm moving to Oahu next month, and selling everything to make the move easier. one thing going is my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0 with 20" ACD, which i'll be selling soon. so....
i bought a new 15" MacBook Pro 2.16 off ebay as 'new, sealed in box'
just wondering what things i should check for when i get it, in regards to a lot of the problems, etc i've been reading about here.
    thanks

Brian, if you look at posts in this discussion forum you will see a number of complaints about the MacBook Pro. If you look at any other Mac model discussion forum you will see a number of complaints about each model.
I have no doubt that some owners have problems, as no consumer device as complex as a computer can be made with zero defects at consumer-affordable prices, if only because they are assembled from many parts, each of which has a tolerance range in its specifications.
My week 12 MBP is perfect. Fast, stable, quiet, perfect screen, perfect fit & finish, good WiFi connectivity and no heat problem. It's been working hard since March 30, 7 days a week. So I have to give Apple an A+ for design, engineering, assembly and QA.
We don't know the actual percentage of MBPs that have had problems. MacNN did a recent survey and reported that about 16% of MBPs had problems requiring service. That's higher than normal, but such polls tend to over-select for problem reports. The major complaint has been about heat, but IMHO heat isn't really a hardware problem for the MBP.
The other major complaint has been a "whine" noise associated with CPU circuitry. Some MBPs are noisy enough to be irritating, especially on battery power. There are user workarounds, but Apple has announced a logic board replacement that can minimize such problems. Mine doesn't whine.
Some people have had assembly problems such as misaligned cases, poorly installed keyboards and what not. Inevitably, a very small percentage of hard drives will fail early -- that's the nature of the beast, even though most hard drives will probably operate beyond their specified operating life.
The odds are that you won't have problems; but if there is a hardware defect Apple has been very responsive and has a good reputation for trying to satisfy customers.
If your computer qualifies for AppeCare, I would recommend it, as that adds two years to the warranty coverage -- and repairs on a notebook can be expensive. I've bought AppleCare for all my notebooks, and have never had to have any of them serviced.

  • UNIVERSITY REPORT | MacBook Pro Review

    Greetings MBP Users,
I'm a Princeton marketing student completing a comprehensive report on the Apple brand. My focus is on the transition from PowerBooks to MacBook Pros, plus the shift to Intel chips.
My question for you: How happy are you with your MacBook? Detail the PROS and CONS, and share some creative solutions to improve the next generation of Apple portables.
Your comments will be compiled on this university-wide project. Although your insights will be an integral part of the research, your identities will remain anonymous to conform with privacy policies of the school.
I encourage you to invite your friends to submit their reviews. More responses means more accurate results.
Just a friendly reminder before you begin - please be as objective as possible. This thread is not designed to disagree with opinions or discuss problems. Be clear and concise. The bottomline is I want to hear your OVERALL IMPRESSIONS.
I appreciate your participation! Thank you in advance.
    Best to all,

Hi Joseph. I replied to the locked out thread. I'll chime in here as well with more objectivity to your re-worded question.
    CONS:
Universal Apps not all ready - but we expected this
Not tested enough? Problems would have surfaced. Don't make the end users your R & D team - that's Microsoft's greatest shortcoming. Test them more before releasing them as the new superior computer
Pricey. But state of the art, so... Think of it as a hot-rod.
CPU whine on a percentage of the units - no action *so far* from Apple
Excessive heat - much more than what the PowerBook series generated
    PROS:
Apple's Customer Service was flawless - can't say enough about it
Out-of-box experiece was wonderful. Quality packaging even - very impressive, very detailed
    VERY FAST computer. AMAZING speed
Great overall, superior package of hardware & software
Mac OS more seamless & stable - tho my Windows experiences were not as far-fetched as Mac enthusiasts in here make them out to be
Sleek, stylish, almost makes you proud to take it out and set it up
Attention to detail. Even the MacBook Pro logo that's laser-engraved into the screen bezel reflects light and looks 'top-shelf'
Overall fit & finish exceptional (though some are not happy with the lid latches not closing all the way - but compared to most other brands but Sony & Lenovo, pretty much a non-issue)
Aside from frustration about Apple's response to heat and whine in general, mine doesn't exhibit whine, and it shouldn't for the price I paid. But I'm very content so far with using my unit as a total desktop replacement for a very powerful PC (3.4 Ghz, 2 Gb ram, multiple SATA drives, etc.). I'm still trading up to the 17" MBP to have on-board FireWire 800 & other features, and, in the hopes that it runs somewhat cooler. Hard drives should not be in high-heat environments. As long as the 17" doesn't whine, I should be more than content.

  • IPad Air case causing problems

My brand new Apple case keeps shutting down my brand new iPad Air as the case presses on the switch. The opening in the case where the lightning cable is plugged in is also badly aligned and I have to fiddle with the case to get the lightning cable to engage. Is anyone else experiencing problems like this?

I bought my iPad Air and decided I needed a case on it FAST. I looked at dozens of cases/covers online from a variety of sources. It's super expensive, but I kept coming back to the genuine Apple iPad Air case. Bought one and it works flawlessly. All of the attachment holes line up (speakers, mics, headphone and Lightning jacks, camera, etc) and the iPad fits securely. Cover closes perfectly and the fit, finish and materials quality is what I was expecting from Apple.
Hated spending that much on a case but after spending $499 + tax on an iPad, I only wanted the best case to protect it. Easier to use and enjoy this super thin, light and fast iPad when it's protected from dirt, grime, scratches and dents. Hopefully in a fall but hope that doesn't happen. It's a personal decision and you'll need to go with whatever makes you the happiest...

  • Canon is screwing us with their repair policies.

I have been using Canon digital cameras since the venerable D60...I have owned the 1Ds, 1Dsmk2, IDsmk3, 5d, 5d2
5d3 , 1d2...mostly full frame cameras. I have used these in the practice of my successful photography business. Quite a
while ago...I learned of a very hard working, talented independent repairman...trained in Japan...now working here. He is
a great guy and will give you quick, very personal service at a very fair price. While I occasionally sent items to the Canon
factory repair in the past...they usually took too long, didn't really listen to your problem accurately, and charged way too much. So when I found my independent guy...I was ecstatic....the very first repair...I had a body that was not focusing accurately....this is before microfocus adjustments built into cameras. It was way off. He personally tested this camera and
worked on it for two hours while I waited there....then when it was done and knocking off razor sharp images....he said..."no
charge this time". This is the kind of guy he is. For the last 4 years I have had such confidence in my equipment...knowing that if something happened (such as when I dropped my 24-70 lens) I could have it back usually in
time for my next important assignment....without too much sting to my wallet
I have just found out that Canon...in their ultimate wisdom, has decided not to produce parts for some of the older cameras like the 1Ds mk2...1Dmk2....so now my guy can't repair them. They have also blocked his ability to get software
and calibration targets for the newer bodies like the 1ds mk3...5d3,  1dx, etc. So now pros like me will have to ship our
cameras to Canon Service and hope we get them back in a reasonable time and without taking out a mortgage.
Not only have they obsoleted some very useable and excellent camera bodies.....but they are now punishing
hard working , honest guys like my tech. I suppose he will have to go out of business soon. Pros out there....lend your
voice to this cause.....complain to Canon about these imperialist policies.

I'd suggest you do a bit more research on this because it's slightly old news when it relates to Canon. From what I've read Nikon went that way long before Canon, but I think both still supply parts for the bodies they no longer service BUT I MAY BE WRONG on that. The real question then becomes which manufacturers if ANY will sell parts / tech support / software / test & calibration equipment to the independants. I doubt any of them will when it comes to the pro level equipment. In return they will need more qualified repair technitions to handle the extra work load
You'd like to believe your independant shop can fix anything, & he probably could IF he could afford to keep up on his training & buy the latest tools & equipment necessary to do the job right in a reasonable time. Everything from cars to cameras has gotten more complicated, smaller physically, and more precise re fit & finish. When the independant shop does a repair right it looks good & so does the camera they repaired so all is well, but if the shop doesn't get it right, blames the manufacturer for a poor design, inferior parts, loose tolerances etc is it the shops fault or the camera makers & just who gets bad mouthed as a result of the now sick but repaired camera or lens?
FYI I'm in another service / repair industry where things have gone way past where many independants can repair everything, and I'm an independant who once worked for a manufacturer at a local level.

  • RESULT - Free Replacement Battery from Apple UK

    Hi to All,
Like a lot of you I had problems with my battery. I noticed earlier this year my MBP would power-off when there was still lots of battery charge left. It gradually got worse and worse. A few months ago I noticed whenever I pulled the power cord out it would switch off and recently I can only use it when it's plugged in.
I read about the battery problems online, and on this forum. I discovered it was a very common problem. I had assumed there was nothing I could do other than buy a new battery, but after reading posts from some of you who have had success getting a replacement one I thought I'd call Apple. Nothing to lose other than cost of phone call. To be honest I wasn't expecting to get any joy as I bought my MBP in May 2006.
I spoke to a overly-friendly guy in Bangalore who kept saying "Don't worry, don't worry. I will sort this out for you". He took my details and serial number etc.. then kept putting me on hold as he spoke to his 'supervisor'. After 15 mins he explained that my battery's serial no. is one that qualified for the replacement programme - but that only applied up to 2 years after purchase. As mine is 30 months old, he had to do some arm twisting and they made an exception for me. He transferred me to a woman in Scotland who gave me a case number etc.. She then passed me onto a dispatch guy.
After 20 mins on the phone my free replacement battery is on it's way. Not sure if I've just been very lucky on this occasion, but I would recommend calling Apple Support wherever you are, before going ahead and forking out for a new battery.

Hmm... Newer Technologies' reseller list includes OWC/esales but they
are not the same; one is a reseller and the other is a manufacturer. A
few product names at OWC are not seen anywhere else unless you look
real hard, but Newer Tech and NuPower can be bought direct from Newer
Technologies online; and a reseller could contact them to carry their stuff.
In any event, if just the plastic is mal-formed, and the section not fitting up
is just a layer of white plastic, that'd be comparatively easy to change. If
nothing else, Apple should have a shorter waiting list on replacement cells
now the recall numbers have been going out to customers. I got mine after
about a two month wait; and after all that waiting, I've gotten over the need
    to use a portable computer. It just sits there and I have to hassle with it;
to keep it charged up and up to date. With winter here, I don't carry it while
travelling anywhere, it'd freeze too easily over the distances I have to go!
Did Newer Tech offer to refund monies and take back these odd batteries?
Have you contacted other battery sales sources for comparative products?
The quality and support plus warranty (and fit, finish, compatibility)
    are all important details.
Some cheap replacements could be dangerous and not suited for use in
the iBook or PowerBook they are intended to replace. I see some at
places like amazon afiliate stores, and wonder what they really are inside.

  • "Library" overkill - now with podcasts?

I initialy thought it was a really glaring bug in 5.0 so I just sort of looked past it, but upon getting the bugfix/service release, 5.1, and reading another thread here I realise that podcasts/vidcasts being in the Library is a feature, not a bug.
This makes no logical sence, I dont put my DVDs and audio CDs in the same box, why would I want my podcasts in with the music? If this is left in, can we at least have a switch to go to a "classic" music-only library?
The new fit & finish of 5 is great, and the new search is wonderfull to.
Keep up the good work, but dont forget, it's all about the music.

A great solution would be to make the search bar a permenent feature in the library,
You can enable the search bar by going to the Edit menu and clicking on Show Search Bar. The search bar, as of 5.0.1, will keep the settings you click on as long as you keep iTunes open and the search bar visible. The default settings return when you restart iTunes.

  • Is this enough to warrant a replacement?

I've had my mbp for about 4 months now, and overall it's been a fairly solid machine. However I do have a 09C60 screen which has noticeable light leakage at the bottom and some at the left side, plus the left side is darker than everywhere else (pretty much all the 09c60 displays I've looked at in store were similar to mine). My power button isn't flush with the speakers, it leans to the left side a bit. Also just above the superdrive, my case seems to be slowly separating from the grey plastic (curves outwards). this wasn't as bad when I bought it, but it seems like it's getting worse with time, and overall the build quality (fit/finish) isn't as good as some I've seen. In addition my right shift key squeaks and my fn key makes an odd crack noise sometimes (when I press it for the first time after a long time). Finally the little plastic thing above the end key is warped a bit and touches the shift key (possibly contributing to the squeaking shift key).
I bought this computer from my university computer store, there isn't an apple store around me for miles, so I would be going to the university store with my complaints. Also I'm wary of sending it away for repair/screen replacement because I've heard stories where more cosmetic harm is done during repair than they fix (i.e. once the case is opened once it'll never go back together the same).
I want to know what my options are so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Most warranties don't cover most of those issues, because they would be considered cosmetic. However, I'm not too familiar with the details of Applecare...

  • T430s - Misaligned function keys?

    Hi folks,
I have a quick question for T430/T430s owners. I recently received a new T430s, and it all looks great so far, except that the top row of function keys seem to be misaligned.
I've seen other posts say that light leaks out from under the function keys, and that the function keys seem raised a little bit from the other keys on the keyboard. Both of those things are true of my keyboard, but that wouldn't particularly bother me.
What's strange about mine is that that the row of function keys is actually angled backwards---so that the front lip of the keys is higher than the back. If I hold the keyboard at eye level and look across from the side it's very noticeable.
Are other people's keyboards like this too, or does mine have some extra special function key weirdness?! If that's just how they are, I'm sure I'll get used to it, but I thought I should check and make sure it isn't a fault.
    Thanks,
    James

    lead_org wrote:
there are quite lot of variables that may cause the function row to bend backwards, it is probably not an intrinsic design but rather something that happened as the result of production process they used to produce the keyboard.
You're probably right. My T430s has Fkeys that are aligned flat with the body. However my keyboard also has fit/finish issues such as a 2mm gap behind the power/audio button strip, and some areas are a bit loose and flex while typing. Maybe Lenovo are now using some quick and dirty methods (like bending or offsetting) to make keyboards fit better.

  • Ready to Purchase 15" 2.0Ghz... What is the Risk?

I am a week away from purchasing a 15" 2.0Ghz Macbook Pro, but now I'm really having second thoughts. There seems to be a lot of issues.
I just don't know if what I purchase is going to be okay, or if it will be just another "problem" machine. Yeah, Apple Care may seem like a comforting option (just in case), but honestly I don't want to deal what some here have been going through - by not only having a "bad", but new machine, but also having to deal with what seems to be customer service problems on top of it all.
So what exactly is the risk? Is there an unconditional 14-day money back guarantee? Or does Apple charge a restocking fee?

Russ, feedback should sometimes be taken with a grain of salt, at least by comparison with your own experience with various models of Macs.
I've got a PowerMac dual core G5 2.3 GHz. If you look at some of the discussion threads on that machine you might get the impression that they blow power supplies every 15 minutes. But mine has been a completely stable workhorse.
I've got a week 12 MacBook Pro. It has been fast, rock stable, has no whine, has perfect fit & finish and has solid and fast WiFi connections. It doesn't have a heat problem. It runs UB applications as fast or faster than my PowerMac, which is simply incredible. Here's a notebook that will absolutely blow the doors off your G4 733 MHz machine when you compare the speed of UB applications.
I've used G4 PowerBooks for years. But go to the discussion forums and search for "heat". Fascinating.

  • Initial iPhone experience....  extremely positive!

I've been reading the forums for several days now, trying to determine whether to "pull the trigger" on the current iPhone or wait until the "version 2.0" to come out. Quite frankly, once I picked it up and ran through three or four of the apps I realized that it was a solid piece of equipment. Luckily the salesman at the Apple Store caught me before I left to let me know that he had received a few in and once they were logged he could sell me one.
I live about an hour away from Reno, and had brought my laptop with me to activate if I was lucky enough to pick one up. Apple employees have consistently proven to be a class act - no issues with my sliding up to the Genius Bar and using my laptop to activate the phone. I was an existing AT&T customer, but with a corporate discount.... Unlike what I'd read about on the forums the activation went smoothly, even so far as to let me know that by activating the iPhone that I was forfeiting any discount I currently received. A grand total of 5 minutes was all it took to setup and sync my iPhone.
So far minimal issues, and typically a resync or reattempt is all it takes to get the phone setup. Extremely happy with the fit, finish, and software suite. EDGE is Reno wasn't too bad, though out where I am it's a little slower, but acceptable.

  • Which sleeve/bag/case do you use for your Macbook Pro?

So what do you use? I've been stumbling across ebay to find something decent for my 15 inch mid 2009 but most of the sleeves don't fit the new macbooks...

for my 17" MBP I use a Waterfield bag (http://sfbags.com). It's actually a sleeve and a cargo bag combo with a nice cable bag as well. Not cheap ($270 or so), but it's very well made and a very nice compliment to the apple in terms of fit, finish, and quality. The Waterfield bags are fantastic, and the sleevecases are very protective, such that you could buy just the sleevecase and drop your computer in whatever bag you like at the moment.
For an older 13" white macbook, I have a Pinder thin, which is much cheaper (~$35 on sale) and is a nice thin minimalist bag. It makes for the smallest laptop and bag combo I've seen (prior to the air) that I would be comfortable carrying around.
