Help on setting up ARD access?

Hello, I'm new to this so in a nutshell my client has asked me to remotely control a branch office of hers with 3 macs behind a linksys router/firewall. The DSL they have provides static IP addresses but currently I just have the router using DHCP. So since I want to be able to control all three macs separately, am I correct that port forwarding won't work for 3 machines. I was thinking since I have 8 static IP addresses available from the ISP, can I just give each mach one of those static IP addresses...then if I can do that, how do I get them to work through the router/firewall? Or do I tell the firewall/router what each of the IP addresses are and then have it route to the individual machines? So for instance set each machine with a static IP based on the router 192.168.1.xxx then somehow tell the router the outside IP address and to forward anything sent to that outside static IP to the internal static IP? ha ha Anyway, any insight or reference to guides on how to do this would be great. I think the Linksys supports NAT. The macs I want to control are all core 2 duo imacs running the latest OS X. Thanks in advance!

Actually, I can do the query in SQL *Plus.  I just can't do the query on SQL scratchPad.
However, I can only say:
select * from states@MSACCESS
I cannot say:
select name from states@MSACCESS
The error message is 'NAME' invalid identifier.
I try to say
select s.name from states@MSACCESS s
but still doesn't work.

    Please help!
It would be tremendously helpful to be able to access, set restrictions, and make changes from the parents device, to all devices under the same iTunes account, so that I could make changes to my kids devices without physical access.
I understand that I can set up a different Apple ID for the kids devices, or take physical control of the device and make the changes myself. However, my teenage son is technically savvy enough to have a job in Silicon Valley, as are most young people these days. However, in order to access his devices the current way, I first have to bypass the four digit pass code. This starts a fight of why I need in the device and continues to escalate. The argument that I am the parent will gain access but the fight is simply exhausting, and quite frankly shouldn't have to happen at all. He is not yet an adult, he did not pay for his iPad or iPhone and I, as a parent, should have not only have the right to change options at will, and from anywhere, but look at history or current activity when I feel like it.
I currently have the settings where app and in-app purchases require my password to be put in, and he must come to me to type it in, but I need more control and would like, and should be able to access any of our six devices and make individual changes simply by logging in to my account, with my password.
If I can see all my devices on the "Lost My iPhone" app, this technology should be easy to make happen.
C'mon parents! I have a pretty good kid, given all things that they can get into, but I am not stupid. For everything I see has been done, there is much more I haven't seen. I want my children to be kept safe and be able to know what they are looking at or listening to. We parents are the only ones who know our beliefs and what our kids can handle and when.
Thanks for any support or information that I may be missing in order to fulfill my request.

There are mobile device management solutions that can do this, including in Apple's OS X Server system, but most parents generally find that setting this up is more work than it's worth. If you're interested, though, there are a couple that at least purport to be free (I don't know if there are any hidden "gotchas"):
    http://www.unwireddevicelink.com/features/
    https://meraki.cisco.com/products/systems-manager
    and Apple's system:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/server/features/#profile-manager
I don't think any, however, allow you to see current activity or browser history. iOS doesn't expose those to access from MDM solutions, to the best of my knowledge.
    Regards.

  • Need help setting up remote access please

I have a new server 2012 network with a server built specifically for remote access
I need to set up simple remote access to LAN pc's, published apps, and to manage domain remotely
this is only a test setup and I want some security but first want teh basics setup then I can lock down
I ran the wizards and believe most things are done correctly when I added the roles, and firewall is allowing access to that server.
when I try to connect from external I get the remote server's default IIS web page, no remote access options
is there a simple checklist to test services internally and test the web page access internally?
I am not sure what information you may need so please ask for any details that will be helpful
Remote Gateway, licensing, web access and certificates have all been configured using the wizards
    David Sheetz MCP

    Hi David,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Initially to remote access the application through RD Web we need to use https://servername/rdweb. Also please check the following setting.
In IIS: IIS Sites --> Default --> RDWeb --> Pages --> Application Settings --> DefaultTSGateway:
Set that to your RD Gateway access URL.
    Then restart IIS.
Your RemoteApps will then be able to find the proper gateway inbound.
When you created your collection bring up its properties and make sure the URL is specified in RD Gateway settings too. This generates the correct settings in the RDP files.
In addition, please checkthis article for information. Also please see whether you
have configured RD RAP and RD CAP properly and try to uncheck the option “Bypass RD Gateway for local address” under deployment properties and verify the result.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks.

I need to be able to have multiple users share a common set of ARD preferences which are stored in a central location. Is this possible with ARD? If so is there a difinitive description on how to do this?

Mungo :-)Its important to remember that Apex is nothing other than a framework for creating HTML and running web pages. So what used to be triggers are now standard javascript events. Although you will find help on the forum for javascript and maybe some in the documentation, javascript events are standard and not proprietary like Forms triggers were. Its frustrating, but there are a TON of resources (google) on the basics of javascript. For instance instead of when-validate-trigger, you'll probably look at the onblur event to trigger a piece of javascript code to run your validation. You can use onfocus which would be sort of like when-new-item-instance in Forms-speak.

  • How to set up full access and limited access wireless networks to laptops

    Dear Apple,
I just received my Apple 1 TB Time Capsule. Can someone please help me with a network configuration I want to set up?
I have a cable modem, and, three computers: a G4 iMAC (system 10.5.5), an Apple MacBook (system 10.5.5), and, a PC laptop.
The Time Capsule is connect directly to the cable modem.
    Regarding the computers:
    (1) I want the G4 iMAC to connect directly, via an Ethernet cable, to the Time Capsule, WITH FULL ALLOWED ACCESS to the Time Capsule and to the back-up function of the Time Machine feature, and, with allowed access to my HP inkjet printer (class 6110);
    (2) I also want the MacBook laptop to wirelessly link to the Time Capsule via the Airport utility on the laptop, and, WITH FULL ALLOWED ACCESS to the Time Capsule and to the back-up function of the Time Machine feature (using WPA/WPA2 security, and, without the network name visible to third parties), and, WITH allowed access to my HP inkjet printer (class 6110);
    (3) I want the PC laptop to wirelessly link to the Time Capsule (using WEP security), but WITHOUT ACCESS to the Time Machine, WITHOUT access to the back-ups on the iMAC, WITHOUT access to the back-ups on the MacBook, and, WITHOUT access to the inkjet printer --- I only want the PC to use the Time Capsule as a WIRELESS ROUTER so that the PC laptop can access the internet.
    (4) And, finally, I want to specify (Time-Capsule/Time-Machine/server ) access ONLY to the iMAC and the MacBook, so that others cannot gain any access.
I specifically need help to set up and configure the Time Capsule so that the PC laptop, as stated above, should have limited access to the Time Capsule --- namely, only to access the internet, and, not even be aware of stored data on the Time Capsule, not even be aware of the inkjet printer, and, not even see my WPA network name when the PC scans for wireless devices.
I also want the iMAC and the MacBook to have access to each other’s data stored on the Time Capsule (like a common server).
I have an old D-Link DI-624 wireless router that I used before buying the Time Capsule, which is available, if needed. Hopefully, I can configure the Time Capsule so that I would not need the old D-Link.
    Thank you in advance,
    David.

The basic method for remote access is not changed.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
    You have a few issues.
The really big one.. the school firewall should not let you connect to home.
Check the IT admin at your school but if they allow anything but a few protocols like http and https through, they are not doing their job. You cannot afford in a large network to have every Tom Dick and Harry access any open device.. that can introduce viruses and trojans into the network behind the firewall.
The general method for remote access on large networks is vpn and the TC offers no vpn connection.. just AFP.
If you intend using 3G wireless stick or the like then you can get access.
The next issue is static public IP or how to find the TC.. you need some way to find the IP if your ISP does not offer static ip, and the tc has no dyndns client. Since Apple shut down new users for mobileme and will close that service there is no method to find the TC IP without owning your own domain. You would be better placing the TC in bridge behind a router that does offer dyndns and port forward AFP (TCP 548) to it.

  • Getting help for setting up a "good" network

    Hi all,
I've been "managing" our network and doing the IT stuff even though I'm not a "true" IT guy, just a graphic artist dabbling in the stuff. I want to get some help on moving our multiple public IP address network to a more secure single Public IP address. I don't know where I can get that help so I'm taking my chances here even though this is not specific to Apple server.
    Here's the equipment we have:
    Apple Extreme dual band
Apple Server 10.6.3 for file services, iCal, iChat, DNS, Open directory, Address book, Web.
FTP server using CrushFTP on a Mac Pro running 10.6.3
Two ADSL modem from same ISP, one 16 Mbps the other 10 Mbps
a Peplink Balance 310 for load balancing the traffic (and it's not working as advertised as far as I could configure it.
30 static IP addresses hooked to the 16Mbps modem/router
a gigabit switch ASANTE Intracore IC36240
    a 100 mbs switch ASANTE intracore 3524
I'd also like to be able to log into any machine remotely with ARD. Right now, it's a peace of cake with everyone having it's own public IP address, but how will I make this work with DHCP? I'd also like to be able to have VPN enabled.
I have no idea how to make the best of this equipment so if you have any insight or know where I can get some help to set that up, that'd be great!

There are as many 'good' networks as there are network requirements and hardware combinations.
Get a server-grade firewall, if that peplink router can't provide that function.
Figure out what's up with the peplink router.
If the peplink isn't working and if it doesn't have firewall capabilities (I've not read the specs), I'd replace it with a firewall with dual uplinks.
Once you get DHCP going, you'll have two IP subnets, and you'll have to set up subnet routing for your gear. Other than that (and with that external server-grade firewall), the remote connections are straightforward.
The server-grade firewall should have VPN end-point servers for pptp and l2tp, and probably ssl, and probably a DMZ. RADIUS support, likely. For this case, dual uplinks and support for running both.
Stay out of 192.168.0.0/16 for your private stuff.
I'd likely set up the public static IP for the router, the DMZ, and key stuff that needs to be public facing. I might well run the rest of the stuff in a private IP block.
None of which involves Mac OS X.

  • Help with setting up Remote VPN

    Hi,
Currently our company is using following:
    Linksys WAG200G(54Mbps):     ADSL Modem/DHCP/Firewall/port forwarding/wireless
CISCO ESW-540-8P switch for intranet: 1x Windows Server 2012 Standard/ 1x NAS and connected to 1x CISCO WAP4410N for wireless
We intend to enable our network for remote VPN( 1 to 5 users) and as well as upgrading the WAG200G to new equipment to use 802.11n wireless.
Would hope someone can suggest stable small business equipment/s for our upgrade? I have previously bought the WAP4410N and tried upgrading to 802.11n for all our users but was not successful as this unit constantly give us access problems. So right I am only using this for my support purpose. I read the WAP321 is a stable equipment from community comments so may consider getting one for 802.11n access. As for VPN and ADSL modem, hope someone can suggest suitable stable models.
    Thank you.

There are many devices that can provide you a VPN solution. Personally I would get a router of some sorts maybe a 2800 or 1800 series and then create a L2 tunnel config on it. There are many links on the web where you could almost do a copy paste of the config. The issue will then be the ability to do a NAT to the router and setting up internal access. That is always unique to the environment so I couldn't help more there without a better diagram and basic configs.
Here is a link with sample configs

  • Setting up and accessing FTP

Hi there, new to iMac and Lion after 30 years of being shackled to every incarnation of DOS and Windows that has been, yada yada yada.
I have a project I would like to get underway and would be appreciative of any pointers, how too’s etc. So I guess first up I will tell you what it is I actually want to do:
I wish to be able to set aside a dedicated folder on my iMac Lion HDD that my family or myself can access across the internet.
What I know: I have Googled and learned how to unhide the hidden FTP server in Lion. But that’s it, there are no lights (to indicate it's on) or buttons or anything else to help me setup what files/folders can be shared or who can have access to them. I know that anyone wanting access to this folder will have to use an FTP client and know my static IP address. I know, I think, that I then have to somehow tell my router to direct traffic for these FTP requests to my local IP.
    My questions, to start with:
Can I set up a special “FTP user” that has access to the FTP folder and not my computer? i.e. I would like Fred to have access to my shared folder but I wouldn’t want Fred to be able to log into my computer if he were in front of it.
Am I correct in what I have said above re what I know?
How might I go about setting up this user access or anonymous access?
How might I go about sharing a folder for the purpose of  FTP?
Or maybe there any third party software available that might hold my hand and help me set all this up?
I would be much obliged for any pointers anyone can offer, many thanks in advance for any assistance offered.
    Mike

Well thank you for the comments and suggestions above. I have used DropBox but it has it's limitations, not only in size but also bandwidth allowance which enforces a three day lockout if you exceed. Terminal work is for young smart folk and not old far_ts like me. However, all is not in vein. On Googling my quest I stumbled across a company who produces a little gem of a program called "Fast File Sharing Web Server" (they must have stayed up all night thinking that name up) and I had it setup in just a few mouse clicks and was serving files securely in only minutes. Software cost just $15.00 which I thought well worth it.
Anyway, just thought I would mention it in case other folk were trying to do same.
    Cheers,
    Mike.

  • Set-aduser : Insufficient access rights to perform the operation

I am a domain admin, enterprise admin, exchange admin, domain user, and others.
While running a PS on a DC as the administrator, The commands I'm running are ...
    $expdate = get-date -date '01/01/2014'
    set-aduser -identity testmail5 -accountexpirationdate $expdate
I get the following error ...
set-aduser : Insufficient access rights to perform the operation
    At line:1 char:1
    + set-aduser -identity testmail5 -accountexpirationdate $expdate
        + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (testmail5:ADUser) [Set-ADUser], ADException
+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : Insufficient access rights to perform the operation,Microsoft.ActiveDirectory.Management.Comm

I then switch to a different DC, the command 'might' work once, but will never run again in the same window.
    Then I tried this ...
    start-process powershell -verb runas
That gave me an additional PS window, and I then tried running the commands again.
    Same error message.
So I tried the following command ...
    $expdate = get-date -date '01/01/2014'
    set-aduser -server XXDC03 -identity testmail5 -accountexpirationdate $expdate
    Same error message.
Is there any way that I can get around this problem?
    Please help.

Keep in mind that the account used to open the PowerShell session must be the same account you're using to open ADUC. The error message means that Set-ADUser is trying to set the attribute for the account, but it's failing. Make sure to test with multiple
different accounts, in case the access control list of the object you're trying to modify is the cause of the problem.
Your PowerShell syntax is valid, so this isn't really a scripting question but a security/directory services question.

  • Help Needed Setting Up IMAP Relay?

I an currently maintaining an OS X 10.4.11 Tiger server, running on a PowerMac G4 Mirror.
Currently, we have our mail setup through our isp via pop (they do not offer imap). All of our employees have set up several access points to the pop server (i.e. home, office, smart phone, etc.). However, the problem arises that as each device is maintaining its own mail, when accessing mail on each device, mail read on one device still shows as unread on the others. As well as, any mail sent from one device, does not exist on the others.
To eliminate the duplication, and missing mail, I thought setting up an imap server would keep all devices in sync.
My thought is, collect all the mail from the isp pop server, onto the OS X server and then have the employees access only the imap server from all the devices.
    i.e.
    Setup imap server
setup imap server to download mail from pop server, and save in the appropriate account.
setup all client mail accounts to access imap server.
I have been able to set up the imap server without any issues, however, I have not been able to figure out how to get the pop server mail from the isp into the local imap database.
    I hope this make sense.
I know there are free services out there that will do what we want, but we do not want to rely on an external service if it is a process we can maintain internal.
If anyone can help me set this up, or suggestions on how to approach this problem, I would be very grateful.
    TIA

I'd probably have a conversation with the mail ISP along the lines of "add IMAP, please" and that will either be followed by happiness, or by migrating to another mail vendor, or migrating to local mail services.
I've bucketed mail over (via imap), and it's not really a good solution; there are a number of wheels that need be kept spinning and by the time the dust settles (outages, glitches, the usual cruft), you might as well either re-host mail to to another mail ISP that offers imap (gmail, for instance), or simply run your own mail server.
Usual tools are imapsync and offlineimap, and those target (obviously) imap and not pop. (I haven't seen much that does a pop pull, but it's likely feasible.)
If you decide to host your own, you'll probably want to upgrade to something newer than the PPC gear, and you'll need to sort out your public forward and reverse DNS for your mail server, and ensure all that matches your MX record.

  • How do I set up timed access control for a time past midnight

I would like to set up timed access control for a number of my devices that would stretch past midnight...   An open network from 6AM to 2AM - effectively only blocking access from 2AM tp 6AM in the morning....
Any notion on how to do this?  the timed factily does not like the setting to enable 6A to 2A, says the times are invalid.
Setting up timed access from 6AM to 11:59P, then doing another from 12A to 2A causes a service "hiccup" of 1 Minute.

Set up each device as follows:
    Everyday........Between.......6:00 AM and 11:59 PM
Add a second rule for each device that will state....
    Everyday.....Between.......12:00 AM and 2:00 AM
You might think that there would be a one minute break between 11:59 PM and 12:00 AM, but that will not be the case, at least on every AirPort that I have ever programmed..  Reason.....11:59 is really 11:59:59:59 turning off at 12:00 AM.  But, you have a second rule to allow access at 12:00 AM, so the AirPort will be "on" at the same time the first rule ends, so there will be no break.
If you really want the second rule to turn the AirPort "off" at 2:00 AM.......then set that time for 1:59 AM. If you set the rule for 2:00 AM, then AirPort will really turn off at 2:01 AM.
