How to capture Vari Cam Footage with  PanasonicHD1200A

Hi there. Thanks to those people who answered my previous question about the Vari Cam codec. I hate to say I am still a little confused.
I should specifiy now that I am capturing footage from DVCPro tapes recorded on a Panonic Vari Cam (720p). The deck I am using is a panasonic HD1200A and I Have a AJA kona LS capture Card.
I want to edit for final output for PAL, so 720x576 (it will be 4:3 letterboxed 16:9) and a frame rate of 25.
So my question is which of Final Cut Pros many capture presets do I use. Do I need to downlaod a third party Codec.
I tried using DVCPro HD 720p60 codec but this doesn't deliver the Data rate I was told to expect (14 mb/sec rather than 5.6mb/s). However it does seem to work. Will I simply have to scale the final movie to fit the proportions of PAL 4:3? As this is a green screen shoot how will my Key be effected by the Codec, GOP, P an B frames, or will final export with a quicktime conversion solve this. I appreciate your help in clearling up these mysterys of HD
I am on a dual processor G5 with 3 gig of Ram.
Thanks Sincerely
Peter Stenhouse

Great! It was shot at 720p25 (so i'm told) there was no use of the variable fps.
I'm not delivering a DV master I want to deliver broadcast quality and as I also dong alot of post, a green screen key, I need the best quality possible. We shot on HD because, we originally we were going to shoot some slo mo. Typically the director changed his mind, didn't shoot any and now I am going through HD **** for no real reason (though the more filmic color space will be nice I am sure)
Via Component sounds like a good idea, though I still need to adjust the deck to output 25fps rather than 30, which it somehow seems to be doing at the moment.
Ordinarily I would capture from digibeta, but we only have the HD deck over the weekend so don't have the luxury of capturing offline RT and then onlining 8 bit uncompressed has I normally do. But I digress.
I don't particularly want to have to work at 30 or 60 fps, beacues I never have before, and because the final output is for PAL Broadcast.
I really appreciate your advice, the glimmers of hope that your words of wisdom provide.
Sincerely
Peter Stenhouse
Excuse the ranting, I'm pretty stressed, I hate colliding with the first hurdle this hard.

  • How to use H.264 footage with uncompressed 8bit PAL footage

    Hi
I have a FCP project with the uncompressed 8 bit PAL settings and FPS is 25 as per PAL standards.
Now i have some 2 minutes of footage fron Canon 7D with H.264 settings. Frame size is 1920*1080 and FPS is 24. I was trying various options to use the footage but failed. already done with various exports like making a new projects of the H.264 settings and export the file as PAL setting with 720*576 and FPS 25, but the result is really bad. Video is shaking and pixels are damaged. Pan shots and other moving shots lost their quality totally.
I even installed an EOS codec, CE1110X, but dont know if i am using it the way it should be or not.
I even tried to export the footage from Premiere CS5 but the result was even bad.
    What to do? Please help.
    Thanx

    hi
just tried converting the footage with mpeg streamclip but the problem remains. Jitters are there and pixels are damaged. Details of the shots are in poor quality. I think the main reason behind this is the source footage is on 24 FPS and i am trying to convert it to 25 FPS. What you think? If this could be the possible reason?
I will get the full card structure in few hours and try the Log and Transfer procedure and get back to share the experience.
    Shane,
thanks a lot for the Log and Transfer tutorial, with the help of that tutorial now i can easliy transfer the clips, once i get the full card structure.
In the mean time if you guys can suggest something else please share.
I am working on a uncompressed 8 bit PAL project.
    Thanks

  • Unable to capture Canon HDV footage with Sony v1u camera

I'm trying to capture hdv footage filmed with a canon video camera with my sony v1u.  My sony footage captures as it should, but the canon footage, although playing fine on the sony camera, will not capture to cs4.  Any suggestions?

Check all camera settings and make sure they match the original filming mode on the other camera... and veryify your PPro settings match
If that doesn't work, try http://strony.aster.pl/paviko/hdvsplit.htm

  • How to capture HDV 24P footage without pull down

I´ve got some imagens with HVR-V1U in a HDV 24p mode thinking to transfer to film. Now I´d like to uploud the images in the same mode. In Premiere there is only HDV 30p and the option 24p only works for dv format. So, in the HDV 30p I receive the file in a Adobe with 6 more frames per second and it doesn´t work for cinema. Is there any way to edit a project in Premire in HDV 24p mode, and in this case how to get the file from the camera.
    thanks.

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Final Cut Express doesn't support HDV natively. It uses Apple Intermediate Codec upon capturing process to convert the HDV format.
Even if you can download your HDV from your PC to your Mac, you haven't the HDV native quicktime component to open the material for conversion to AIC purpose.
Final Cut Pro allows to works with native HDV.
So why don't you use more tapes and keep archived source material. Mini DV are pretty cheap these days.

  • How can I export m2ts footage with 5.1 audio in PP CS5.5?

    Dear All!
I have a 90 minutes project which made from 4 sequence. Sequence settings are the followings : AVCHD 1080p 25fps square pixels , 5.1 channel master audio.
I made the sequences from avchd file-s, which recorded with Sony HDR-CX700V with AVCHD 1080p 25fps and Dolby digital 5.1 sound.
Right now I finished the project with lots of effects and imported After effects compositions, and I cannot find any setting to create 5.1 sound.
I have Mainconcept codec suite, but this offer m2ts 1440*1080i settings only.( And I cannot configure the mainconcept codec settings.)
Do you have any idea how can I export the project without any degradation, and with 5.1 audio? The original footages recorded with this properties : H264/AVC - top field first - 22.000 Mbit/sec.
    And I use in the project some 720p H264/AVC - progressive - 8.001 Mbit/sec videos.
    Please help! Thanks a lot.

You have to consider a couple of things. Mixing 1080 and 720 material is best done in a 720 sequence, because uprezzing will seriously deteriorate quality, unless you accept black borders. That also means exporting a 720 format as maximum, unless again you accept serious quality loss. Whatever the resolution you choose, exporting AVCHD material to anything else than uncompressed, Lagarith or UT will entail a generation loss and thus quality loss. The best export settings are dependent on your delivery medium. DVD, BD or web.
Since you are working in a 1080 sequence, the quality loss of uprezzed 720 material is not a big issue, apparently, so what is the relevancy of 'the same quality' on export when you have already compromised quality?

  • How to capture from Camera to PPRO CC?

    Equipment used:
    1. GY-HM750U JVC
    2. 1394 Firewire port to thunderbold adapter into Macbook Pro
The record settings on my camera match my project settings in PPRO CC. However when I go to the capture Panel and hit record I see nothing in on the screen (what my camera sees I cannot see). Then after I hit ESC to stop recording or even stop it pops up with "unknown record error" message.
I have setup my device control, and have even attempted it as none.
All I am trying to do is get a backup live recording from my camera via firewire.
I've followed my JVC firewire setup and set things accordingly in PPRO CC to no avail. Any help would be great!

That would suck. The whole point of the adapter is to allow this to happen. Thanks for your input.

  • FCPX will is capturing entire tape footage with import

Need some help please. I import as I have done on lots of other projects the footage from my consumer Sony HC9 (HDV) camera.
This time however FCPX is not capturing the last 7 mins on the tape. It seems to stop at 55:54:15 for some reason. The import goes to the end of tape and looks like it is working, but when I start editing I can see the last 7 mins or so of footage has not been captured. Tryed to do another capture in a new event> Same result! Any ideas why? Cheers

Bryan, seems very odd that the archiving method didn't work
Anyway my first suggestion would be to try capturing the last 7min of your tape using a manual method. You can do this by using QuickTime Player 10.0. Choose File - New Movie Recording and be sure to change your capture settings.
My second suggestion would be to try iMove. If nether of these work, then you can bet your bottom dollar that the cause is more likely to be the tape not FCP X.
Let me know who you go.

  • Can you capture desktop/monitor footage with Premiere CC?

I'm looking to put together some animation tutorials/making of kind of videos and want to record my digital process as I work.  To my knowledge Premiere can't do this but I noticed while researching that some editing software does so I figured it'd be worth checking since I already have Premiere CC anyway.  I dug around the program a bit and I'm not seeing anything but I'm not entirely sure I'd spot the options for it if it does.
    Thanks

Premiere only captures from a Firewire feed... not off the screen... there are a lot of other programs

  • How to capture DV-NTSC material with 12bit audio ?

Does anybody have the solution ?

In the Final Cut Pro Menu select Audio/Video Settings
    select the capture preset tab
    DV NTSC is probably selected.
    click on the edit button
click OK to make a copy
in the QT Audio settings select capture first two channels, second two channels or mix channels.
This is the first time I looked at it in FCP 5, in 4.5 there was an advanced button there that allowed you to select channels and also preview the sound.
When it captures, it's going to convert to 16bit. You may have to experiment a bit to get what you want. Capture 15 seconds and see if you are getting what you want.
I'm assuming you are capturing from 12bit because you recorded onto all 4-channels of the DV tape. In the past, I've had to make sure all my audio for the first 2-channels captured to the left side, and second two channels to the right side, then when I mixed two channels in capture, i would have seperate audio. But mixing the two channels may mix audio from the Left on channel one with audio on the left from channel 2, instead of mixing L & R from channel one to the left of the captured channel. Sheesh...
Anyway, it may take some experimenting...

  • How can I import .mov footage with original pixel aspect ratio?

So the footage is 720x480 Square Pixels (1.0), 29.97 fps, progressive .mov but when I import it into Premiere Pro, they come up compressed as D1/DV NTSC (0.9091) automatically. When I try to Interpret Footage, it simply adds black bars. Why can't it just import correctly? When I preview the original footage, it plays back correctly but the preview inside Premiere Pro shows the distorted version... Please and thank you!!!

The suggestion about "new item" above was short. Here's the "full" version. In the Project Panel, go to the lower right corner ... click on the "New Item" Icon ... as shown here:
The first item on the pop-up menu that will appear should be "Sequence" ... click on it and just say ok at the next screen without even reading it. It's irrelevant, really.
Then going back to your project panel (we assume you've already imported your footage into it) click & drag a clip from the proj. panel to the timeline, or move one from the "Source monitor" to the timeline ... you should get a pop-up asking if you want the timeline changed to your footage, or your footage changed to the timeline. Take the timeline/sequence settings changed to match footage, and go.
That SHOULD take care of the problem in the vast majority of cases. It is such a simple fix, and so often the easiest and "correctist", that it's worth a try. Navigating the choices of setting up sequences is best left for those people who say, study GPU algorithms for a couple hours before going to bed for the sheer exhilaration of it ... unless, of course, PrPro actuall does a face-plant with your footage. But it mostly works good at it ... once you just let it ... so you might give that a try, takes what ... 20 seconds to see if it works?

  • How can I merge chromokey footage with another project?

I have a project that I'm working on and want to go back in and place some green screen footage into the original project. What do I have to do to be able to use and edit the green screen footage and place it into the original footage?

In FCPX? Just place the green screen footage over the storyline (as a connected clip) and apply the Keyer effect to the green screen footage (if the green screen is really good, you probably won't even have to make any adjustments to the keyer). You can also use the Transform parameters in the Video inspector to adjust size, positioning and orientation of the overlaid footage to fit into the storyline original.

  • How to import pre keyed footage with transparent background?

    Hello
I am working on a small action scene and i am trying to import pre keyed muzzle flask without the black background.
i tryied everything : saving the link to the desktop as " save file as" , making the the optimize video box is unchecked, show advance tools under preferences, i tried different free site like footagecrate, detonation film and so forth. I even made sure all softwares were up to date. Finally i watch all the import video tutorials on youtube and the apple site... i am following all the steps but all footage have the dark background.
I'm really stuck if anybody can help

I did use it for some projects, but most material from Detonation Films isn't pre-keyed.
the few clips I used are simply 'on black' which allows in advanced editors like FC/e to apply a simple luma-key.
for usage in iM, the 'boom!' has to be on blue or green to apply a color-key, like this example:
or, the material contains an alpha-key, then the .mov has to be encoded in some format which does support alpha-keys, as 'Animation'.

  • How do I xd-cam hd pal capture to fcp then export to mpeg2?

    I am using fcp 5.1.4 on a g5 2.5 quad.
How I capture xd-cam hd pal 20:00 min video/audio clip using firewire from camera to computer. Then export that clip to Mpeg 2 for ftp to client.
I know I have to change sequence and capture settings. I cannot find capture preset, but found only sequence preset for xd-cam.
Do I need an upgrade for fcp to studio 2?

No need to upgrade to FCS2.
What you need is the PDZK-P1 Transfer App v1.1 from Sony.
    Download that from here.
Read the manual that is included with the download, and you should be good to go, as far as importing into FCP.
From there send the .mov through Compressor to make your M2V file.
