HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (UK purchase) will not connect to wired ethernet network

Hi
We have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (purchase here in UK approx 9-12 months ago) which has sort of worked OK wirelessly but finance industry compliance requirements now require me to connect to it by normal ethernet cable.
When I disable wireless and plug in a (tested and working) ethernet cable it does nothing.  I have done a factory reset (via the screen menu) to remove any previous settings.  Turned off, turned on, still nothing.
I have restored Network defaults also using the menu command within settings - network; no difference.
In Network - wired summary the screen says:
IP: Not applicable
MAC: xxxxxxxxxxx (not for sharing here)
Hostname: xxxxxxxxx (not for sharing here)
Wireless Direct: Off
I have tried it with IP settings turned to Automatic (DHCP) - no joy.
I have tried it with IP settings turned to Manual(Static) - when i then type in the static IP address that is within the router range (but outside the DHCP reserved range) as soon as I press Done, the settings are lost i.e. 192.168.0.102 - push 'Done' and the IP goes back to 000.000.000.000
The same when entering the default gateway and subnet masks.
I have restored to defaults several times, tried manual and DHCP several times, no joy.
Please let me have some serious suggestions at the earliest opportunity.  Just to reiterate I have tested the network connection and cables with other ethernet equipment and they are working.  My questions include:
1.   Anyone know how to make this printer actually store the manually entered IP addresses etc?
2.  What am I missing about the wired setup?
3.  Is this a known issue?  Is it an issue with the hardware ethernet socket or something?
4.  Also in this forum there are references to a Hard Factory reset that is apparently different to the menu 'Reset to Factory Defaults' but links to an article about it just give a 404 error, not found.  [Does HP actually have two different levels of Factory Default and if so, God knows why!  Does anyone know a working link to this information please?

Hello Qw8, welcome to the forums!
I read your post about not being able to successfully install your Officejet 8600 Plus to your wired network. I will do my best to find suggestions for you to try. I would first like to know which Operating System you are installing the printer on to help me with my research.
If you haven't already, run the installation (HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g Drivers) with your security and firewalls disabled to see if the proper connection can be made.
I do see you ask about other resets and there are others however, at this stage they may not be needed. If they are, I can send you a private message at that time with that information.
Please let me know your OS and we will go from there!
Have a wonderful weekend

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus paper tray will not go all the way in so cannot print

Have loved this printer for almost two years but suddenly the drawer which holds the paper will not go all the way in so cannot print.  Took it to a so-called tech at Office Depot who said that because you cannot open/remove the tray, there is no way to see what is jamming it.  Any thoughts?  My first call for tech support was answered by a tech here in the US who said they had experience with it and it could be fixed and asked dme to call again when I was back in the office and at the printer.  The next four calls were answered overseas and they all had had no experience with this problem.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 fax from computer will not fax more than one page without canceling job

HP Officejet Pro 8600 MFP running on Windows 7 64 bit. I purchased this printer almost a month ago. The install was simple and straight forward with no apparent problems but when trying to fax from computer the program seems to be only able to fax one page faxes. Any multiple page faxes will show a message "spooling" for 10 to 15 seconds then it will cancel the entire fax. I have tried this in both wired and wireless modes with the same results. I have sent 30 page plus faxes from the printer without any problems, it is only the fax from computer that seems to have memory issues. Any solutions out there?

Have you tried updating the firmware on the printer?
If not, here is a link to the most recent firmware:

  • Officejet Pro 8600 N911g new firmware will not install.

My printer: Officejet Pro 8600 N911g
    Current Firmware: CLP1CN1416AR
My problem: Downloaded the latest firmware update (Version CLP1CN1322CR). When I go to install it, my printer shows as listed, but in the STATUS cloumn, it is listed as "Not applicable".
    I turned my printer on/off.
I tried updating via network, and when it checks for an update, it states there are no updates avaiable.
    I tried updating via USB.
I tried updating via the LCD panel on the printer, and when it checks for an update, it states there are no updates avaiable.
Is there something wrong as to why this current firmware will not install?
    Thanks for any help.

New Firmware (CLP1CN1416R) was installed automatically (Printer was set for "Auto Update").  Prior to new firmware install,  printer has performed flawlessly...no problems.  Immediately after printer updated it's firmware automatically I began to have multiple problems.
First, it kept asking me to perform an "Alignment" which I dutifully performed only to have message come back that 'Alignment Failed".  Printed sheet looked fine, and printer printed fine but now before any page will print the "Alignment Recommended" message comes up which I have to then override (Click 'Do Not Align' button at bottome of 'Alignment Recommended' message box.  This is getting really OLD!!  Simply unacceptable for a business class printer!!
Also, the printer randomly has started giving other messages such as "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" AND "Cartridges are Missing" ("when I've just recently put in new catridges and levels are OK!!) AND "Paper Jam" (when there is no jam!!)
None of these problems have occurred prior to the automatic firmware update.  I believe the reason HP hasn't posted the new firmware update to their Customer Service website is that they know there are bugs in it and don't want to compound the problems the new version has already created.  I seriously question why an automatic updating of firmware was done with equipment set to "Auto Update" and yet that same new firmware is not available to those who might have had their printers set for "Manual Update".
HP Customer Service - You need to issue a statement from the company as to what has happened with this firmware update.  If there are problems, take responsibility for it and make it right.  HP knows who it sent out auto updates to.  These printer owners should be immediately notified and the situation made right.  It is not real assuring to have your front line staff not know why the new firmware is not on the website.  I do not like the idea of having to pay for a Support Call when the problems with my out of warranty printer are directly tied to the Auto Updating of said printer with apparently defective firmware.
I'd really appreciate a response back from someone in HP Customer Service.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus ...paper TRAY wont close all the way?

My Officejet Pro 8600 Plus paper tray will not return to the proper position. This has happened TWICE now, and always about 3 weeks into using it...
I returned the first printer and replaced it with the same because we love the features and ease of use. But now,  AGAIN??
I tried printing with it hanging out this time..it will print, but ....COME ON!  It makes it real hard to pull out the tray that my paper lays on after printing!
I called HP support the first time, he couldnt help me. Just said replace it.  There has to be something I can do a button or something?  I cant see it..does anyone else know?

Unofrtunately useless information. By trial and error I have found the only way to replace the tray is to lift the entire printer from the front at about a 20 degree angle and then the tray slides in. Very defective design. Never buy another HP.
It is possible you have a defective unit, I would suggest you Contact HP for service.
It may not be any consolation for you, but the tray works fine on my Officejet 8600 Pro Plus.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus will not send or receive fax

I have connected the fax machine to the phone outlet, the fax machine dials to another fax machine, the connection sounds like it is being made (the receiving fax machine sends out a noise signalling that it has received a phone call) and then the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus says that is is "Connecting" but no fax is sent. Nor can I receive a fax, even though the phone rings on the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.   The error code I get is Error 388 which is that a communication error occurred during fax transmission.  However, this message occurs regardless of the fax number that I send to, and I had the recipient check that the receiving fax machine was working fine for transmittals from others.
Is it possible that the proble is that  I cannot send or receive faxes through a digital phone line?  That seems odd to me given that almost all phone lines in the modern era are digital.  How do I send and receive faxes with the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus if the only phone lines available are digital?  Also, 4 months ago, I used the same phone line for the same machine, and the fax function worked, but my phone provider assures me that the only phone lines that they have ever provided are digital.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
I am sorry to hear you are having issues with the fax functionality on your Officejet 8600 plus. I have found a document that has several troubleshooting steps you can try to narrow down the issue. I know some of these steps you have already done, but there might be a few that you haven't, like there is a HP test fax service you can use to test functionality.

  • Configuring "Scan To E-mail" on HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

This is the same issue reported by several other users in this forum to which no solution has been provided.
I have been unsuccessful in setting up the scan to e-mail option for a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g purchased on August 12th 2012 and using the firmware CLP1CN1150CR.
I am trying to do this through the Embedded Web Server interface to the printer from an iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and HP Utility 5.8.0.  More specifically the page under "Scan -> Scan to E-mail -> Outgoing E-mail Profiles".
I have tried 2 different SMTP outgoing servers, each of which works well to send e-mail from the computer: Apple iCloud e-mail service (formerly known as Mobile Me, formerly known as .Mac) and AT&T Net e-mail service.  I verified that the server name, port number and authentication login/password values were all correct.
When scan to e-mail is used from the printer, I get an error message:  Cannot connect to server.  Check server name and address.
When tested from the computer during the setup of an outgoing e-mail profile, I get an error message:  The device could not send the test e-mail message. (EmailAccounts-timeout).
When I try to configure the page under "Settings -> E-mail Alerts -> E-mail Server" and use exactly the same values as the ones in the outgoing e-mail profile above, the Save and Test option fails with an error message:  The device could not send the test e-mail message.
Interestingly enough, I am able to use the computer's e-mail client with the option Scan To Computer -> E-mail as PDF or E-mail as JPEG.  With this option, the file is scanned and added as an attachment to a mail message from the Mail client under Mac OS X.  When I press the Send button, the e-mail is sent successfully through the same SMTP server.
All the error messages seem to indicate that the printer's e-mail client software is unable to establish a connection to the SMTP server.  However, it is not clear what configuration parameter is the one that could be causing the problem.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

After further research, I noticed that there are other possible default Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port values:
Port 25 is the standard SMTP port number.
Port 465 is the port number for SMTP over SSL, Secure SMTP (SSMTP).
Port 587 is the dedicated port number for a Mail Submission Agent (MSA) that uses a variant of the SMTP, as specified in RFC 6409, which requires that clients are authorized and authenticated to use the mail submission service.
I had been using port  number 25 as this is the standard one.  However, all tests were failing.  Hence, I decided to try the tests with ports numbers 465 and 587.
Port number 465 failed with the same errors listed above.  However, the tests passed with port number 587.  After saving the successful configuration with port number 587, I tried the scan to e-mail option from the printer and it worked.
A mail submission agent (MSA) is a computer program or software agent that receives electronic mail messages from a mail user agent (MUA) and cooperates with a mail transfer agent (MTA) for delivery of the mail.
Historically in Internet mail, both MTA and MSA functions use port number 25.  However, many Internet Service Providers (ISPs)  and enterprise or institutional networks restrict the ability to connect to remote MTAs on port 25.
With a dedicated port 587, it is always possible for users to connect to their domain to submit new mail.  Availability of a MSA on port 587 enables nomadic users to continue to send mail via their preferred submission servers even from within others' networks.  Using a specific submission server is a requirement when sender policies or signing practices are enforced.
I know that many users may find the technical details boring or confusing, but I just wanted to include some background to those who actually care about this level of detail.  I also wanted to provide a possible solution to other users who are experiencing the same problem.
So, in a nutshell, if the Scan To E-mail option is not working for you using port number 25, then try one of the other SMTP port numbers listed above.  If none of them work, check your mail provider for other possible outgoing server port numbers.

  • Printer won't print - HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus All in 1

    Hi,
Please can anyone help me ?
I have Windows 7, 64 bit HP computer with  a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus All in 1 Printer.
It printed over the network/wireless yesterday. I then had a problem scanning to the computer so I followed advice on the HP community and uninstalled and re-installed the latest software/driver for the printer.
Today it WON'T PRINT!! The printer has a connection to my router (Plus Net Technicolor N router) and shows the little symbol on the printer screen. I tried printing my work today and it says the printer is offline - it can't be as the printer is ON and has a signal connection.
I have uninstalled, reinstalled, turned it on and off on the printer, I've restarted the computer, I've unplugged and plugged in all of it - the router, computer and printer. The computer has the green tick to say the printer is the default and it is ready. It then says to check the network connection or it maybe to do with the firewall settings, but these I haven't changed for over 1 month and I've printed loads of stuff between then and yesterday.
I desperately need my printer and short of going to have to buy a brand new one - I don't know how to fix it!!!
Please can anyone out there help me??!!!
    Help!!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks for any helpful advice
    Victoria

Just to say as well that on the top of the 'X there is a problem printing' At the top where it says the printer - it has on it 'Fax - HP Officejet Pro 8600'
So it is trying to print from the 'Fax' part of the printer and yet when I change the printer device to the actual 'printer' part to default it always changes back to the 'fax' Officejet Pro 8600 Plus rather than the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus.
I will uninstall all the elements to the printer and then find the latest driver to the printer and start again to see if that helps.
    Please help me!!!
Thank you for any helpful advice

  • My officejet pro 8600 plus drops the LAN network connectivity , eprint works, and fixes LAN

OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus , computer running XP service Pack 3,  Wired to ethernet network with static compatible IP address.
When printer sits idly, loses LAN connectivity. Scanner and printer not seen by the computer. Unplugging cable, restarting printer does not solve the "Unable to communicate with Printer" error message.
The printer remains connected to the internet and sending an ePrint job from my Blackberry phone wakes up the connection between the computer and the Printer and scanner.
Any idea what is going on here and is there a better fix then sending a print job from my Blackberry?

I have the same problem. I'm even able to print from the EWS (Embedded Web Server) website since, even with this problem, I still have a working wireless Internet Connection. To do this just enter 192........ as the URL. The "192..." is the IP address of your printer.
I was online for over 3 hours in a chat session with an HP tech which proved totally worthless. These guys work out of a script (which is wrong in many instances) and are essentially useless unless you can get to a higher level of tech support. In fact, there can be serious damage to your computer if you blindly follow their advice.
My next step is to go higher up in the HP "food chain".
    Good Luck

  • HP Officjet Pro 8600 Plus (wifi) - printer keeps losing connection to Win7 PC

    Hi,
My 2 months old HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus has started to lose connection to Win7 PC. Connection is setup using Wifi. This can be fixed by disconnecting and connecting printer to wifi again, but this needs to be done every time the connection is lost so it's not really solving the issue.
The printer has been working nicely with out-of-the-box setup for 2 months. The problem started to occur yesterday after installing a proposed automatic SW update to printer.
Any ideas how to solve this connection issue? (other than not installing any proposed updates if everything is working nicely..
    Thanks,

    Hi,
Try connecting the printer to the router using a manual IP address which should resolve this.

    Hello @ladybonds ,
Thank you for taking the time to post on the HP Forums today! Hope you enjoy the experience.
You are saying that you have been printing fine from your computer for 5 months and now your printer says it is connected to the network and your computer says that it isn't.
Have you recently upgraded to Yosemite the new Apple OS? If not what OS X are you using?
Are you sure that the printer and your devices are on the same network?
Does the router give your printer an I.P address?

    Hi Conny,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I understand that the attachment to an email sent to your Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer’s ePrint email address did not print.
After the PDF didn’t print, did you log into your HP Connected account?  I’m curious as to what HP Connected indicated about the print job. I have included the ePrint Job Did Not Print document.  It has several causes and solutions as to why the PDF didn’t print.

I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus all in one printer/copier/scanner. It's worked fine for the several months I have had it. But now suddently the computer does not recognize the scanner. I am connected to the device wirelessly and can print but not scan. I haven't been able to figure out why the comptuer recognizes the printer but not the scanner. I uninstalled and reinstalled the device but still no success.
Any ideas how I can get the computer to recognize the scanner? I am running Windows 8. Have not updated to 8.1.

Hello Sarah1234, and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I see you are experiencing scanning issues.  I would like to help.
I would recommend powering off your printer and computer.  Once they are both down, I would recommend unplugging the power from your wireless router for 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in.  Once it has begun broadcasting again, power on your printer and computer.
I would also recommend downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. Once you have launched the tool, select the 'fix scanning' option.
