I am a  recent Apple convert and feel like I have been ripped off

I purchased a 13inch MacBook since I was getting a little bit tired of having to constantly reboot my PC. Bought a 13 inch MacBook in Nov 2008. Since this was my first Mac and did not have any other accessories/sofware etc from the pc world, I invested in buying all the accessories - duplicate power cords, apple care, more memory etc... all original ones from Apple (read expensive). I did not mind it since I was thinking that I will be using the MacBook for a long time. I recently found that my battery was not holding the charge and so I scheduled an appointment at the Genius bar at a local Apple store. I was told by my die hard Apple fans that enter all the details in and since you have Apple care, they will have a new battery waiting for you. I arrive at the designated time and (the person who was helping me had not even bothered to find out why I was there for - ok, granted he must have been busy). He sticks a usb drive and runs some program which tells him that the battery needs to be replaced. He then continues to tell me that the battery needs to be replaced and that I have an option to buy it at the store. I obviously asked him why I needed to buy when Applecare should have covered it. He rattled off some technical balther and finally it amounted to that the program he was running said that my battery had failed and Apple considers anything over 300 recharge cycles as having 'failed'. How in the world a common user like myself supposed to know this? When I challenged him to show where in Applecare this was stated...he pretended to look on the web and turned to a colleague of his for support and all they ended up doing was point me to the description for battery coverage for batteries under Applecare, which is quite vague. Here is my question - I have taken good care of my Macbook. I have seldom used it solely running on battery. I have always had the Macbook plugged in. Is'nt this unusual for my battery to fail this early and not being covered by Applecare?
I would have gladly purchased, had I known in advance what constituted failure- ie over 300 cycles etc..(though I would have questioned that this could be attributed to some manufacturing defect for it to fail so early). Why does not Apple state it as such as a part of the warranty description? This in my mind is a rip off.
I was planning a trip and did not want to be left without a battery so I was forced to buy one at $129. The gentlemen at the genius bar spoke to his manager and cut a deal for half the price. The whole incident has left a very sour taste for Apple's products and service - not sure if there are other similar surprises lurking in fine print in Applecare land.

In the future, ask about that stuff here first. Mac accessories (such as memory) are often different, but they shouldn't be any more money than the PC versions.

It is not that automatic, but not far from it either.

It sounds like you just had a loser. Complain about them and go to a different store. If you don't have another store handy, talk to the manager.

A spare battery is a good thing to have.

Just avoid that store in the future. Most places are much better than that.
The real question here, the one that the "genius" didn't ask, is why you have a cycle count > 300. I have a 2006 Macbook, a 2007 Macbook, and one spare battery I bought sometime in 2006. The two batteries I have installed have cycle counts of 245 and 222, respectively. How can your 2008 Macbook have cycle count greater than 300? You should keep an eye on that.

There are alternatives. But none of them have Google street view, able to work on iOS 6. Apple should have offered this as a beta version, for a few more months instead of inflicting us with an inferior product. This iPad will probably be my last Apple product. A shame, because until last a few days ago, I thought the iPad and iPhone were fantastic.
Apple should quit their petty squabbling with, Google and Samsung and concentrate on supplying the best product.
Google and Samsung must be enjoying this particular fiasco.

You can't if your rented it on your Apple TV - from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657 :
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

  • Feel like I have been mis-sold. Can I cancel?

    Hi,
I have recently moved house and was advised by BT that in order to get the phone-line set up to my house (it's a new build property), then I would also have to take out a BT calls package. I accepted this at the time as I needed a phone-line and with all the other pressures of moving house, disputing this with them was not my top priority. However, in hindsight, I think I have been forced into taking out a phone package with BT that I do not want.
Also, I have also signed up to BT Unlimited but was not made aware of the Traffic Management policy; either by the person I spoke to on the phone, nor have I been provided with any paperwork outlining any of the T&Cs. As such, this package is not suitable for my needs.
Am I in a position to be able to cancel my contract, as I feel like I have been mis-sold these products and have not been provided with adequate/the correct information by the Customer Services staff?

Off course you can, anyone can cancel a contract anytime they like.
I think your question should have been "Can I cancel my contract without having to pay cancellation charges."  Thats debateable

  • I have recently installed Mavericks and since then I have been unable to shut down or log out of my mac.  I work with two screens and now I seem to have programmes at the top of both screens which I didn't before.  any advice?

I have recently installed Mavericks on my desk top and since then I have been unable to switch off my computer without crashing it. I work with two screen and now I seem to have the menu bar on the second screen as well which I did not have before.  Can you please help me?

Dr Bettina, I had similar problems with Mavericks. I installed it on a Mini and a 13" MacBook Pro. I can't speak to your disdplay issues, but I can confirm the inability to logout, shut down, or restarft without a forced, power button shut down. I can also report frequent System Prefs freezes and finder issues, like folder contents taking half a minuite or more to render, or not appearing at all. And while a few Adobe CC apps actually ran faster, InDesign ran like molasses uphill in Decemner.
I tried uninstalling or disabling numerous 3rd party apps and pref panes. I unplugged everything but the keyboard, ran DiskWarrier, repaired permissions, did fsck -f, trashed various preference files, reinstalled the OS... You name it, and I tried it — short of a potion using eye of newt.
After two days of totally hosed productivity, I restored OS 10.8.5 on the Mini so I could actually get some work done. However, I've decided to leave Mavericks on the MBP as a sort of crash dummy, and will install and thoroughly test all updates until stability has been achieved. Then — and only then — will I upgrade the Mini to Mavericks, even if it means waiting 'til a .2 or even .3 update.
    Good luck to you...

  • I feel like I have been taken advantage of

The OS3 had to be the biggest waste of money I have ever spent at the Istore. The crippled bluetooth really makes me feel like I have wasted my money. Why does apple always do this with their products.
I hope google comes out with a mp3 player with wireless inet

The same thing happened to me.  I ordered 2 Samsung Galaxy 4 phones in March.  The promotion was $100 credit on each line.  I called and talked to a customer service rep before I placed the order to make sure we qualified for the promotion since I was upgrading 2 lines from basic phones to smartphones but not adding new lines.  I was told that we did qualify and we would get the credit.  I still have not received the credit.  I was on the phone with Verizon today for 1 hour and 42 minutes and was told they never had that promotion and I would have to prove they did.  How can I possibly do that?  On the other hand, Verizon should have a record of my phone call with the customer service person and surely they have a record of what promotions they had and when.  I think Verizon should honor what their representatives tell us even if they are wrong. I too feel scammed.  I still can't believe that I was told today that Verizon never had that promotion and I have to provide proof!  What terrible customer service.

  • The location of my hometown (Hysham, Montana) is off by over 50 miles ever since Apple Maps came out.  I have been reporting off and on ever since but it has never corrected.  What do I need to do to get this fixed?!

The location of Hysham in Apple Maps is off by over 50 miles and has been ever since the advent of the app.  I have gone through the motions many times to place the pin the correct location.  Unfortunately, no one at Apple seems to care if Hysham, Montana is plotted in the correct location or not.  The location displayed in Apple Maps is quite literally in the middle of nowhere.  If someone were to rely on Apple Maps to get to Hysham may very well end up marooned in the midst of muddy two track road in the summer or stuck in a snowdrift in the winter with little or no hope of expedient assistance.  Other than the reporting feature in Maps, there appears to be no other means to report mistakes and there appears to be no expedient means at Apple to filter through reports and fix the errors.  In sum, What do I have to do to get the location of Hysham fixed in Apple Maps?  Much thanks!

You have done all that you can. Apple maps depends on 3rd party map data solutions. As problems are reported, they are reported to the data providers. How and when they decide to make changes is up to them.
You can also let Apple know you are disappointed in this via feedback at www.apple.com/feedback and click on the appropriate link.

  • I feel like I have been duped by the Edge program.

Who do I contact to review my verizon experience in regards to a purchase made over a year ago?
The documents section does not hold files that long, so where can I find a copy of my receipts and agreements?

You could call verizon's customer service and say you nevered recieved a receipts. They could possible send them to you.  I am notsure if that will work tho.  If you tell them you are trying to dispute something then they probably won't send them.
    What is going on?

  • HELP HELP ive turned on my ipad mini it took about 2 minutes then i unlock and all my apps have been tooken off and i cant go into settings to reset to factory defaults

ive lost all apps and I wont restore ipad.

Do a search for the Settings App first. If you are running iOS 7, swipe down from the middle of the home screen to get to the search field at the top of the screen.  If you are running iOS 6, swipe to the right from the first home screen to get to the search area. Type Settings into the search field. When the app appears in the search, tap on it to open the Settings app.
From that point, do one of these two things to get the apps to reappear. Most likely, the second suggestion is the one that you should try since not all apps can be restricted.
Check Settings>General>Restrictions and make sure that you didn't disable them.
You can also reset the home screen layout and the icon will reappear - but the home screen will return to the way that it looked when you first activated your iPad.
    Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout.

  • I recently purchased a new mac computer and would like to sync the music off my iPhone to my new mac. However, my phone and my new mac have different apple Ids.The PC which my phone is synced and has the same apple ID but does not let me transfer the music

Hi I recently purchased a new mac computer and would like to sync the music off my iPhone to my new mac. However, my phone and my new mac have different apple Ids.The PC which my phone is synced and has the same apple ID but does not let me transfer the music. Home sharing is not working. How do I successfully transfer and sync the music off my ipone 4 to my mac book pro if they have different Apple IDs? Thanks!

What do you mean the PC won't let you transfer the music? Save your entire iTunes folder (this is assuming that you have all your music stored in your iTunes folder) to an external hard drive. Connect that hard drive to your Mac. Copy the iTunes folder to your computer. Hold down the option key while launching iTunes on your Mac. Select the library you just copied when it ask you to select which library you want to open.

  • I sure hope that the new imessenger doesn't look like the text messaging app, that would be a huge flop for apple. It has to look and feel like bbm or it will just suck.

I sure hope that the new imessenger doesn't look like the current text messaging app, that would be a huge flop. I think I should look and feel like the bbm to make any kind of significant impact. Am I wrong?

"iMessage in iOS 5 brings the functionality of iPhone messaging to all of your iOS devices―iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Built right into the Messages app, iMessage allows you to easily send text messages, photos, videos or contact information to a person or a group on other iOS 5 devices over Wi-Fi or 3G. iMessages are automatically pushed to all your iOS 5 devices, making it easy to maintain one conversation across your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. iMessage also features delivery and read receipts, typing indication and secure end-to-end encryption."
That is from the Apple site. If all your friends have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad you cang share with your friends, with is exactly like BlackBerry Messenger (BBM only works on BBs).
And it does look just like the current message format. You can also find that at www.Apple.com

Apple will repair or replace at its discretions, parts found to be defective in materials or workmanship.
You will have to discuss whether your history warrants a complete replacement with the folks at the Genius Bar.
I do not speak for Apple, but it sounds to me like you have been unlucky, but not unlucky enough (or have spent so much time with your MacBook in the shop) to warrant a complete replacement.
You have not provided any details of what the faults were or what was replaced. If they replaced the motherboard, you already got a new computer -- because everything except the drive and the display is on that board.
