Importing Framemaker files

I've had success importing smaller files (100 - 200 K), but they are the exception. Now I have to do the large dudes. 700+K. I set up the Paragraph tag conversions and click Finish. Robo sends a blue progress bar halfway across the screen and stops processing. Any ideas?

I have moved this to FrameMaker Integration as the question is to do with getting FM files into RoboHelp rather than the output that will be created.

  • Adobe Technical Communications Suite - Importing Framemaker Files into Robohelp

We have just started using the Adobe Technical Communications
Suite to import our Framemaker files into Robohelp. (We have about
a year’s experience of taking Framemaker files into Web Works
Publisher, with good results so we were hoping for a similar
    experience with Robohelp).
Please can you help us with the following two problems:
    1. Importing FM files into Robohelp has posed some immediate
table formatting problems. We imported the FM files by reference
according to the instructions but cannot format the tables, ie.
    Colors etc.
    2. Can you also tell us if there is a way to set up our
graphics in Framemaker to import into Robohelp without first having
to run them through a batch file scenario to change the size for
online help. Also, can you explain why the imported graphics are
being put into separate folders in Robohelp – is there a
system option where we can stop this from occurring.
We are a little frustrated because we are long-time users of
Robohelp and Framemaker and are finding some of the new features of
TCS are not as helpful as we first thought. I am sending these
questions after spending several hours going through the Robohelp
Help and the Adobe website and not finding the answers.
    Thanks for your help,
    Asra S.

I have purchased the Technical Communications Suite and am
working with it now. I am finding several short comings in the
product – 60% great product and 40% not so great. I have been
using FrameMaker and RoboHelp for about 11 years and also I am a
Webworks (ePublisher) user. I was expecting (at a minimum) to have
the same functionality as ePublisher in TCS - ePublisher works
seamlessly with FrameMaker. Quadralay worked with me the first
month to answer my questions to ensure I was pleased with the
product - and welcomed/appreciated my feedback. In some cases they
provided me with scripts to accommodate my needs. I am finding on
message boards and forums that a lot of users as very disappointed
with your product so far. Are there any plans on
improving/enhancing the product to accommodate our basic requests?
The standard answer we get concerning graphics and tables is
to use conditional text. This is not single-sourcing and is a
horrible recommended work-around – a hack if you will. We use
conditional text to handle differences in program functionality. I
understand there is some set up required when you create a new
project in RoboHelp, but after that I would like to run the Batch
File process to simply generate my newly updated FM files to online
help. How efficient is that? VERY!
I have provided a list of the basic missing
functionality/oversights that would greatly improve the product and
satisfy a lot of your current users. Some of these issues may be
user misunderstanding and in that case I seek guidance on what
I’m doing wrong. Take the other issues into consideration
because these are not just my issues, but a TON of your users.
Hopefully you are user focused and are as concerned as we are.
Please welcome this feedback as a way to improve the product.
    - No Breadcrumbs supported with MS HTML Help - supported in
your other outputs and is available in ePublisher, so it must be
    possible.
    - Table formats are not configurable – why? Sometimes
the converted table format from FM isn’t 100%.
    - Imported file structure (folder for each chapter) totally
hoses my fix to poor graphic rendering. Currently I use a batch
file to run a Photoshop macro/action on my graphic source files to
reduce the file size by 50% and sharpen. I replace the graphics
with my graphics and they look marvelous in online help. I copy my
source graphics back into my “graphics folder” imported
into FM at 260 dpi for my printed docs. Can we have the option on
the structure for imported FM files to put them all into one
    folder?
    - Text entered into the Auto numbering field is not converted
when importing by reference. It is when just doing a straight
import. This is used for standardizing my inserted tables with
pre-populated column titles– Troubleshooting, If/Then, etc.
    - Too many CSS issues. It would be nice to have one main
template that we can sync to when the master template is changed.
    - Can’t specify a default template to apply to all FM
    files when imported.
    - My output .chm file is not picking up my Project Settings.
It will not display Favorites, My Window Size, it’s not
    showing the TOC.
    - Cross-references – sometimes they work and sometimes
    they don’t.
    - Markers – we use markers for glossary terms and the
character tagging carries forward throughout the rest of the
    sentence.
I started testing the product four days ago and these are the
major issues that are keeping me from moving forward with my
overall plan to move to structured FM. I’m now between a rock
and a hard place because now my department does not have the
software to do their job. Do I go to management and tell them that
I made the wrong decision in my tool selection? I choose your TCS
over the updated Quadralay ePublisher that works with FM8…
Maybe they went up on their price because the knew their former
users would come back and be willing to pay the increased price for
their software that generates online help with just a click of a
    button.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for your help
in advance. Please direct these concerns to those in charge of
enhancing the product (Product Evangelist). A reply and technical
    support is greatly appreciated.

  • Importing FrameMaker Projects in RoboHelp

    Hi,
I currently have FrameMaker 6.0 and a trial version of RoboHelp HTML 8.  I want to import FrameMaker files (.fm and .book) but get the error message "This operation cannot be completed without FrameMaker. Please instrall FrameMaker and try again"...but I have FrameMaker...
    Thanks.

I am having the same problem. I have a RoboHelp 8 project and want to import a file from Framemaker 6.0p405.
I even opened the Framemaker book and from there launched RoboHelp. I am still getting the message:
"This operation cannot be completed without FrameMaker. Please install FrameMaker and try again."
In the RoboHelp help, it says:
"FrameMaker book files created in a version earlier than FrameMaker 6 (BK) can only be imported into RoboHelp; they cannot be linked."
So, I'm assuming that I should be able to import a Framemaker 6 file into RoboHelp 8.
    Best regards,
    Debbie

  • Error trying to import FrameMaker documents into RoboHelp 8

Using FrameMaker 9 and RoboHelp 8.0.0.203 (Adobe Technical Communication Suite 2) on Microsoft Vista (w/SP2) as administrator user. I get error when attempt to import a very simple FrameMaker 9 document (not book) into a RoboHelp 8 project. Attempted import using menu command File > Import > FrameMaker Document. Error (in dialog box with "RHUtils" as title) is:
Unable to install RoboHelp plugin for FrameMaker.
Please close FrameMaker and try again.
Verified with Windows Task Manager that FrameMaker is not running. Even get error when I reboot computer and RoboHelp is the only application started. Error occurs for all FrameMaker documents. Simplest test was a FrameMaker document with one heading and one body paragraph.
Searched knowledge base and found article rb_4416 ("Importing FrameMaker Files"), which advises that best way to import FrameMaker documents is to convert them to Microsoft Word format and import those files (!?). The article does not indicate which RoboHelp versions it applies to.

Thanks. It was a new project. I only recently installed RoboHelp 8 and am in the process of familiarizing myself with the new (for me) version. So it was not a production project that was involved. But it is a feature I can see using.
I will next contact Adobe technical support on this issue.

  • Format of variable imported from FrameMaker file

When I import my FrameMaker  files into RoboHelp, at least one of the variable formats changes. That is, a variable format containing a superscript character gets removed when imported into RoboHelp. Is there a way to fix this variable format in RoboHelp  or do I have to convert this variable format to text in FrameMaker before importing into RoboHelp.
I am using the Technical Communicator Suite: FrameMaker 8.0 and RoboHelp 7
    Thanks

I created a test project and imported one chapter.
The results of the superscript were the same, that is, no superscript: C3 instead of C3. However, there is an exception to this behavior. If there is a cross reference, the cross reference retains the superscript.

  • Different ways of adding FrameMaker files

What is the difference between the following two ways of
adding FrameMaker files to a RoboHelp project:
    1. File > Import > FrameMaker document
    2. Right-click project folder & select Add FrameMaker
File (with Copy or by Reference)
    ??

This is an old thread, but the answer is not sufficient, so I'm raising the question again.
RoboHelp is maintaining some kind of knowledge about the FrameMaker files, because the icon on the folder holding the individual topic files for a FM file will change to red, indicating an update is needed. Update based on what? I can make a text change in the FM file and the icon won't change, but at some point in the process, will get the red icon indicating the files need to be updated. It does not seem to retrieve changes to text, but I had a topic in which I had replaced a large graphic with a linked thumbnail image, and upon taking the bait and "Updating" the files, the thumbnail was replaced with the original image. During the update, the message says "Processing FrameMaker Documents."
So does anyone have a clearer explanation about the Add FrameMaker File > Add by Copy is doing? And should I ever/never/sometimes update the files?
I have FM 8.0p277 and RH 7.03.001 (can't upgrade due to client request).
    Thx.

  • I am able to generate PDF from Framemaker file but not able to generate pdf from book in robohelp

    Hi,
Using robo help i am able to generate pdf  from a single framemaker file.
but when i am importing whole book then i am not able to make it.
And also it is not showing any error on console
It goes to hang like situation and i have to close it from task maneger.

Ok, silly question - why are you bothering to try and create PDFs from RH when you've got FM? FM to PDF produces great results; RH to PDF involves having to go through Word - i.e. RH - Word - PDF = too much work IMHO.

  • Part of path lost when importing autogenerated files

Hope someone can help as can't find anything on the forum about this.
Have two Framemaker 8 books, one of which contains all the files for a future publication, including LOT, LOF and IX.  This is the full publication but most of it is still heavily in draft.  The second book represents the first release of the publication and has only a small subset of agreed content.  The idea is that the publication will grow in time.
The second book is in a subdirectory below the directory containing the first book and the full set of files.  It has its own LOT,LOF and IX.  It also links up to a few of the files above, the ones that are in the first release. The LOT, LOF and IX contain contain references only to these few content files. Have done it this way rather than put everything in one directory, as there will be a number of subsets, with multiple PDFs produced for review from each before the finalised PDF containing the current content to be released at any one time, and don't want them all in the same directory with the management problems that would introduce, and risk of people selecting the wrong version of a LOT, LOF etc. The content files with the actual text in are not duplicated in this subdirectory; the book just links to them in the directory above itself.
All was well on one PC but needed to work on a second also. This second one has a different directory structure and it isn't possible to change it because of the different policies in place.  So copied the main directory and the other subdirectory beneath to the new PC.  All appeared OK; the lower level book found the files above etc.
To clarify the structure on the second PC is this:
\dir0\dir1\dir2\Content directory - place where the first book plus the preface, glossary/index and the other files in the draft book - the main body
..dir0\dir1\dir2\Content directory\dirA - place where the second book and LOT, LOF, IX are for the book to be published first (the .. represents some other directories from the root)
(On the first PC, it was \dir0\dir1\Content directory\ and dir0\dir1\Content directory\dir A - and this is the shorter path from the root)
When trying to generate the PDF on the second realised something had gone wrong and then found that the problem began in FMkr. The symptom is this:
The LOT, LOF and IX autogenerated files are fine within the book, their links can be clicked and they go to the source files (in the directory above).  BUT these files aren't part of the actual publication.  The LOT and LOF are embedded in a Preface (one of the files in level above) and the IX is embedded in a Glossary and Index file (ditto). When these are imported into the Preface or Glossary as appropriate, whether by reference or by actually including the file, the result is the same - the links become non clickable and an error is saying that the file can't be found. The path is partly truncated - it excludes the directory where the files actually are.
So for a link to the Introduction.fm file, FMkr says it is looking for it as ..dir0\dir1\dir2\Introduction.fm and not ..dir0\dir1\dir2\Content directory\Introduction.fm where it actually is.
This occurs even if the whole structure is copied elsewhere to a place higher in the hierarchy. It isn't possible to reproduce the structure on the first PC because of the configuration of the second PC.  Have tried taking the LOT etc. out of the second book then regenerating them from scratch - they are fine, the links in them are fine, but when imported into the other files, the links miss out the directory which actually holds the source files where the links point to. Must emphasise this did not happen on the first PC.
    Any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks Sheila, have now overcome my problem with editing the post (duh!)
Hope the below is clear enough as cannot send an actual screen shot. Have discovered that the number of directories above in path is a red herring because the problem now happens back on the original pc when the book and files are copied back to it.
Have tried creating a test book with only the index, glossary/index and one content file linked from directory above (i.e. test book at dir c level) and it is OK in the autogenerated index but then does the same truncation when the index is imported into glossary/index, i.e. looks for the source file in dir A.  If the source file is copied into the test book directory, the file removed from book and then the local copy added back in and the book updated/import redone, the links work. so it will find it if the source files are in the same directory.  However, this always worked before with lots of test runs and a few real reviews too.
Subject: FrameMaker General Discussion Part of path lost when importing autogenerated files
It would be really helpful if you might do a screenshot  of the File Manager hierarchy of folders and insert them into your posting, maybe use callouts to annotate the various significant levels -- a visual would really, really make it much easier to interpret what you're describing.
    >
Sorry, not coming out very clear compared to viewed on PC. Directories are A, B, C - Dir A caption "The Directory above the content directory. Links in the subset book in Directory C look in here after they are imported into other files in the subset book"
Directory B says "Directory B, the content directory, with introduction, glossary/index and other content files, plus main book, main index, main LOT, LOF. Some of the content files in here are also linked to from the subset book in Directory C"
Directory C says "Directory C containing the subset book with its own index, LOT, LOF, plus links to introduction, glossary/index and a couple of other files in Directory B.  The links to files in Dir B work in the autogenerated LOT, LOF etc, but not when imported into content files (linked files in directory B) although this used to work. They now look for the content files in Directory A instead"
    Hope that makes it clearer.

  • How to tell what template is applied to a Framemaker file?

I'm new to Framemaker...so please excuse if this is a silly question.
We are trying to figure out how to tell what template has been applied to a Framemaker file. We are using the structured view in Framemaker 7.2.
Perhaps I am thinking too much like a Microsoft Word user -- in which case I can look at what template has been applied to a document.
Does Framemaker work the same way -- or are templates associated with Framemaker files in some other way?
    Thank you --
    J-Ha

    J-Ha,
FrameMaker works differently. Strictly speaking, there is no way to tell which template was used last. A FrameMaker template is just a FrameMaker document which you call "template". Using File > Import > Formats you can import all or selected formats from one document to another. The main benefit: Each document is completely self-contained and does not require any other document.
Many solutions I know of include a user variable named something like "template-version" into their template document or put the version information on one of the reference pages. When importing user variables or reference pages, this can tell you version imported last.

  • Importing PSD files create a black line to the right of some images

I am importing PSD files into Framemaker 11 and they keep giving me a vertical line on the right side of some images. I already know that other image file formats don't cause this, but I prefer the practicality of PSD files and not having to deal with duplicate files of the same image. I figured that native Adobe files that are supposed to be cross platform compatible should work without any issues. I get lines when converting to PDF documents and when I print them out also. I’m getting ready to publish our catalog and would like to prevent the printer from cleaning them up again.  Does anyone know how to fix it or if Adobe is currently addressing this issue ? Who can I contact to let them know about the issue, since it has been around from the time Frame started accepting PSD files?
    Thanks,
    Tomas

    Hi ais007,
This is gonna sound really crazy, but this happened to me a couple of years ago. Below is the answer....hope it helps for you!
Found the answer to this in the framers digest mailout (framers Digest, Vol 71, Issue 9). Hopefully it wll help you too.
I am not sure about the Illustrator files, but for Photoshop, resize your images so that the last number is an even number. (example: change 3.25 to 3.24)
This worked for me! I couldn't believe it!

    Dear All,
    I have a scenario like,
I am receiving a XML file from a 3rd party application for the daily Creation,Update of Item Master,BP Master, Marketing Documents. I want to import this file into SAP B1 through its approp objects. I understand DTW has limitation in its file types (Semicolo,Tab,Comma,ODBC). How do i do this ? Please guide me.
    Thanks,
    Thanga Raj K

    Hy folks,
I´m frim Brasil and I've been studying the tool EFM (Eletronic File Manager) to learn more about it!
There I saw that we can extract to XML "any" infomation from the database we want, mainly through the GEP.
However, as I've seen, this Add-On can not import any XML file into SBO, unless for the BFP wich can be imported in conjunction with the BTHF Add-on.
So I ask: how is it possible to import XML data into SBO database? Is it possible to be done through the EFM? or  it´s really necessary to write a code specifically to do that?
Besides, I know that de B1iSN fit to this necessity... but when I tried to use it, by the custom "object" for BP, for example, there are some data wich the mapping conteined in this custom "process" that can not be imported... I tried to understand how to map those other fields not imported by the custom but this has been dificult to me as I am a implementation consultant focused in administrative process not on development...
Could you please help me with this subject!
    Thanks a lot,

  • How to include preset in RTF import option while importing RTF files?

    Dear all,
I created a script which will place text from rtf files present in a folder to an active document on different page based on match. I am using a preset name "myRTF" which i will use when i import rtf files without script.
Is there a way to include this preset in script?
I have checked many places....... but did not found.

            case "Switzerland_en":
            myFrame1.parentStory.insertionPoints.item(-1).place(File (sourceFolder + "/" + myFiles[i].name))
            break;

            myFrame3.parentStory.insertionPoints.item(-1).place(File (sourceFolder + "/" + myFiles[i].name))
            break;

    Hi Dave, Peter,
thanks for your reply. In that case i will check WordRTFImportPreference but not sure if customize style import can be done for paragraph style sheets.
for example: word has "normal" and "head1" style but i want to map to indesign Body_light and H1 styles respectively.

  • Problem Importing CR2 Files in Aperture 1.5.6

I recently shot a number of pictures at my sister's wedding using my Canon Digital Rebel XTi. I am now trying to import the RAW files into Aperture (ver. 1.5.6). Aperture will recognize the compact flash card and display the files on the card. When I try to import the files, however, Aperture seems to go through the process of importing the files (the little timer dial runs etc.) but at the end of the import process the pictures do not appear in my project. What could be the problem? I am able to copy the files onto a folder on my desktop but Aperture will not import these files even from that folder. Help!

gah hey im having this problem too
and it all worked last week <?>
    formatted flash drive on camera.
downloaded photos from a file reader via flash drive.
    camera = canon mk3ds eos
can see previews in apeture (2.1.2) but large image on browser is unsupported.
    error message "unsupported image format".
have tried downloading them again and importing them again etc.
both straight into apeture and via hard drive folder.
    but it worked last week?
bit upset i love aperture and my new camera now nothing is working well
for info i loaded up canon photo professional which is canons own brand image processor (which is a bit rubbish imho) and the images worked on that.
they will not import to photoshop (an old version)

  • Tempo problems with imported wav files

Hey everyone, sorry if there's a quick fix for this in the forums that I couldn't find, but I've been having some tempo problems with imported .wav files.
Long story short, my system couldn't handle playing all the tracks for a song while recording drums, so I bounced out an mp3 of the song and put it in a new Logic file so my drummer could just play along to that as I recorded him. Unfortunately, the original song is at 167 bpm, but I forgot to change the bpm in the new Logic file with the .mp3 file of the song to 167 bpm, so it was left at the default 120 bpm.
So, the drums were recorded at the correct 167 bpm, but Logic thinks that those new drum .wav files should be played at 120 bpm, so when I import my drum tracks back into the original file, they do not play correctly at all.
I could get record it all again, but I wanted to check if there was a way I could salvage what I already have, since my drummer lives about an hour away right now and can't just come over whenever he wants.
Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it.

    Hi,
First, do not use MP3 in Logic, the sound quality is less than AIFF, WAV or CAF, and Logic has to decode it for playback, making it a heavier burden on the CPU than an uncoded audiofile, such as AIFF, WAV or CAF.
Secondly, audio files are independent of Logic's tempo. If you bounce down an audio file in any format (other than Apple Loop), it will play back at the same speed, +regardless of Logics' tempo setting+, either at recording or playback. Logic doesn't 'think' anything. The BPM is only important to MIDI tracks, or to the spacing between audio files. The audio files themselves *are not affected* by the tempo setting. If you import an audio file of tempo 167 into a 120 BPM project, the file will still play at 167, only Logic will indicate the wrong bar positions.
    regards, Erik.
