Is KB article HT3964 correct?

My 2008 MBP would not wake from sleep today. In my troubleshooting, I came across KB article HT3964 (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964) that described how to reset the SMC.  I followed the process for laptops with a removable battery but it made no difference. Eventually, I ended up at the local Genius Bar, and the Genius performed an SMC reset in a different way and my MBP restarted and was well-behaved right away.
The difference between the procedures was that the Genius took the battery out, the replaced it, and THEN held the power key down until the lid release LED began flashing quickly. The procedure in KB article HT3964 says the keep the battery out and hold down the power key for five seconds, then replace the battery.
Given that the method in KB article HT3964 brought no joy (twice) and another procedure worked immediately, I wonder if someone at Apple should revisit KB article HT3964.
Cheers,
Michael

Ah, I see that your link was originally pointing at HT1411, but it is automatically redirected to HT3964.  I will look for a cached version of HT1411 to see what it said.
I just tried and for the life of me I could not find a cached version.  If you do, could you please post the link.
Good catch by the way.

  • Which of these 2 articles is correct on Pentium processor system requirement for Flash Player 10?

http://www.ehow.com/info_8526453_flash-player-10-system-requirements.html says that Flash Player 10 on Windows computers requires "a Pentium 4 processor running at 2.33 GHz or an Athalon 64 2800+ processor."
    However, http://www.downloadatoz.com/essentialware/adobe-flash-player/what-is-system-requirement-of -adobe-flash-player-10_g.html says:
"System Requirements of Adobe Flash Player 10:
    • Windows 2000, XP(SP2 and above), Windows Server, Windows Vista., Macintosh OS X, Linux
    • Intel Pentium 450MHz, AMD Athlon 600MHz processor (for Windows);...(for Mac)"
My ThinkPad PC does not meet the processor system requirement for Flash Player 11 or 12, and does not meet what ehow.com (above) says is the processor system requirement for Flash Player 10. However, it does meet what www.downloadatoz.com (above) says is the processor system requirement for Flash Player 10. Adobe.com has the operating system requirements for Flash Player 10, but no longer has the processor system requirement for Flash Player 10.
    My question is:
    (a) Is that "Intel Pentium 450MHz [or] Intel Core Dual" system requirement (from downloadatoz.com) for Flash Player 10.0 and that "Pentium 4 processor running at 2.33 GHz" system requirement (from ehow.com) for a later version of Flash Player 10 (like 10.1); or (b) is one of those two sources (ehow.com and downloadatoz.com) mistaken as to the processor system requirement for Flash Player 10 on Windows computers? If (b), which of those two is the correct Pentium system requirement for Flash Player 10?

What processor does your thinkpad have?
I know they now come with an Intel M, which is the functional equivalent of the Atom, and for ALL intents and purposes, meets the minimum for Flash Player 12 or 13 as long as it's 1.66gHz or faster.
Using, or even considering using, Flash Player 10 in a system newer than Windows 98 or 2000 (SP1 or 2), is unwise and unsafe, expecially if it isn't a "standalone" (not connected) system.

  • Cannot generate a Key. Manage Account menu doesn't show up even after following Help articles. Correct username, e-mail and password. I already have a Firefox Sync Account but cannot Add a Device. No way to Sync due to no Key.

I cannot generate a Key to Sync between two computers. Manage Account menu doesn't show under Options > Sync > Firefox Sync Setup > I already have a Firefox Sync Account > I don't have the Device with me. No Sync Key no matter how hard I tried.

Yes I did. '''''I solved this issue last night.''''' First I had to Clear My Sync Data, then Yes I Already Have a Sync Account [enter User, Password] and only then the Key appeared in its proper field. Went to the 2nd computer and wrote down the Key after I Already Have a Sync Account. The bottleneck was to enter into Mozilla server after resetting pass and user, and then, clear data.

Strange problem. Wordpress article displays correctly in Firefox, Opera, Camino and Flock. Mangled in Safari.
The article contains three embedded mp4 movies. But an earlier post, which contained one embedded movie using exactly the same code, displays perfectly in Safari.
Am using Wordpress but not yet upgraded to v2, the theme is Tarski 1.2.3

This is the archive page of the post which will soon be off the top of the front page.
I've checked and rechecked the code and can find nothing to explain this.
    Any help welcome.
    Intel-Pro powerbook 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Well in the end I resolved this for myself. It was one variety of the various methods for using the <embed>video content</embed> tags. It worked for all the other browsers but not for Safari.
Safari also, as remarked by many here, does not display certain icons in Wordpress - and I actually had the same experience using Movable Type with Safari. In fact I would like to ask, what is it that Safari actually does better than these other browsers, because I am damned if I can think of anything.

  • Mail 4.5 Message Encryption Does Not Work per Articles

    Apple's various articles and help files on how to send encrypted mail do not work for my currently installed Mail 4.5 on my 10.6.8 OS;
"An Encrypt (closed lock) icon appears next to the Signed icon if you have a personal certificate for a recipient in your keychain; the icon indicates the message will be encrypted when you send it." This DOES NOT WORK.
I followed instructions to create certificates with Keychain Access on both sending and receiving MacBooks, imported each others certificates and set them to trust always per Apple instruction. But Mail 4.5 DOES NOT allow me to send an encrypted email message from an email address with a certificate in KeyChain Access to an email address in KayChain Access; the lock remains grayed out.
I'd appreciate some help (and it would be nice if the Apple articles were corrected also).
    Regards,
    KayakGuide.com

When I had this problem originally, I called Apple support. Their solution was to remove all the 'interesting' files from the Library/Mail folder (including the V2 folder and its files) and import all the mailboxes manually. This would have worked but taken an eternity (>50 mailboxes, >100,000 messages), plus recreating rules, etc.
So I started experimenting. The critical files that made Mail not start up correctly were the SmartMailboxes plists (SmartMailboxes.plist, VersionedSmartMailboxes.plist). I deleted them (and their backups) and Mail started up OK. I put them back, Mail failed to start up. (Tried all that after Mail had transitioned all the old mail to V2 but hadn't successfully started up.)
So I cleared my Mail folder, reinstalled it from backup, removed SmartMailbox plists, and started up Mail. Imported everything just fine (except the old MailTags plugin of course), started up normally. Very Happy now.

  • Calling BAPI_PO_CHANGE in a loop, correct POs after faulty PO erroring out

    Hello Gurus!
I have an issue while calling BAPI_PO_CHANGE.
I'm looping on BAPI_PO_CHANGE with Purchase Orders one by one, and adding articles to the existing POs. It works fine if additional articles are correct
The issue is, if one PO returns with error from BAPI_PO_CHANGE, because of say '0' quantity or 'Discontinued' status of an  article, the remaining POs after faulty PO error out too. The remaining POs are correct and update correctly if executed separately.
I'm refreshing all required iTabs and program works fine in case the newly added articles are valid.
I'm calling BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT in case BAPI returns with successful PO change. In case of faulty BAPI returning with error, I've tried using BAPI_TRANSACTION_ROLLBACK. But it doesn't work.
Here is the u2018error messageu2019 log:

  • HT3462 Is this article still true?

Is this article still correct. i tried to do this in the messages app on my computer and it didnt work.

    Hi,
The answer is a sort of yes and no at the same time.
It is still possible to send SMS via an AIM Buddy list.
Howerver the Menu items that used to exist are not longer there.
    It can only be text.
It Has to be from a Computer that has been set to the USA region.
The phone in question has to be on a US carrier in this list
    Method.
You need an AIM account in Messages > Preferences > Accounts  (it can be an AIM valid ID such as a Apple ID ending in @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com)
    It needs to be enabled.
If you are not displaying Buddy lists go to the Window Menu in Messages.
The default is for a combined Buddy list ("Buddies" in the menu).
They can be separated out in the Preferences > General Section  > And unticking the "Gather all Accounts into one List"
IN the AIM Buddy list click the Add Buddy + icon at the bottom of the Buddy List and chose Add Buddy.
Add the phone Number as if it were a Buddy's Screen Name with a leading +1 in front  (as in +1234567890)
    It will be automatically formatted.
In the Contacts List you can Set the Edit option for a Contact and Add the phone Number as an AIM Screen Name there.
I tend not to do this as if they have an AIM name as well you cannot tell which is On Line without mousing over the Buddy list.
If you do add them to the Contacts list as their Own card it will look a bit like this
This is obviously a Mocked up Card and Number  and will not work  (you will get a response from the AIM servers saying it is not valid.)

  • The migrate Thunderbird help article has an error.

Thunderbird Path Why moving Thunderbird into a new computer might fail.
This is my computer's folder path to the Thunderbird email files:
    C:\Users\Stan\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\iq9rzk1o.default\Mail\pop.att.yahoo.com\Inbox
    In that Thunderbird email folder:
    Are these folders:
Crash Reports A long list of very tiny "Install Time" text files.
Profiles Folders and files holding all the Thunderbird user's email and preferences.
    And these files:
Registry.dat A very small file with perhaps some entries for installation in the Registry.
Profiles.ini A very small text file containing only this:
    [General]
    StartWithLastProfile=1
    [Profile0]
    Name=default
    IsRelative=1
    Path=Profiles/iq9rzk1o.default <--- Note this.
If that Path entry is not exactly the same as the path following the Thunderbird folder, then Thunderbird does not start.
Error message: "Your Thunderbird profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible."
So, when copying/moving Thunderbird from the old computer into the new computer, that Profiles.ini file must be included.
To do that copy/move the entire Thunderbird folder. NOT just the Profiles folder, as that Help article describes.
Thus this Help article needs correcting: Moving a Profile [ Because it fails. ]
    See: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb#w_moving-a-profile

    Hi, Team Mozella:
    Some more thoughts ..........
'''Move all the Thunderbird email (and its settings) into a new computer
That is the goal. This article seems promising:
'''Thunderbird: "Moving Thunderbird Data to a New Computer"'''
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer#w_manually-moving-files
In that article, for "Manually Moving Files" the reader is right away referred to this article:
    '''Thunderbird: "Profiles TB"'''
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-tb
That article is really only concerned with creating and managing Profiles.
Which really isn't a good way for transferring all the Thunderbird email and settings. For only doing this: "Moving Thunderbird Data to a New Computer"
    Overly complicated. Perhaps the following?
. (Why not? It does work.)
    . '''=============== A Suggested Approach ============='''
'''Installing all Thunderbird email into another computer:'''
The following is performed using only Windows Explorer:
    In the Source computer
    - To backup the Thunderbird folder:
. 1. Install a USB flash drive to hold the Thunderbird folder backup.
. 2. In the Source computer, locate* this folder: Thunderbird
. 3. To copy that Thunderbird folder, select it. Then do: Ctrl C
. To locate it, select the folder holding it.
. 4. Paste that Thunderbird folder copy into the backup USB flash drive
. To do that, select that USB flash drive. Then do: Ctrl V
In the Destination computer (Assumes Thunderbird is installed.)
    - To restore the backup Thunderbird folder:
. 1. Install the USB flash drive holding the Thunderbird folder backup.
. 2. In the Destination computer, locate* this folder: Thunderbird
    . 3. Rename that folder: Thunderbird-1 ( Hiding it from Thunderbird. )
. 4. In the backup USB flash drive, copy the Thunderbird backup folder.
. 5. Paste that Thunderbird backup folder where the Thunderbird-1 folder is located.
'''Locating the Thunderbird folder path''' *
    - For easy reference you can place that folder path listing into WordPad:
. 1. At the top of the Thunderbird display, click on these:
    . Tools > Account Settings
. 2. In the Folder Pane column on the left, select the desired Account.
    . (An email address.)
. 3. In that Account Settings box click on this: Server Settings
. 4. Now at the bottom of the Account Settings display is a box: Local Directory
. 5. Click the mouse cursor in that box. Then press: Home
. 6. Then while pressing Shift and Ctrl, press: Home
. All the box's text is selected.
. 7. To copy that selection, press: Ctrl C
. 8. Open the Windows WordPad application.
. 9. To paste the selection into WordPad do: Ctrl V
    . ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    '''Example Thunderbird folder path listings:'''
Windows 7 ( The Thunderbird folder is in the Roaming folder.)
    C:\Users\Stan\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\iq9rzk1o.default\Mail\
Windows XP ( The Thunderbird folder is in the Application Data folder.)
    C:\Documents and Settings\Stan\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\fl9e9qwi.default\Mail\

  • Battery serial number records

    Hi
I suspect that when my computer battery has been swopped with a faulty one whilst in a shop that was going to sell it for me. When I took it there it worked perfectly. When I got the computer back now the battery won't charge.
I'd like to try and trace what the battery serial number for my computer is. The original one that came with my computer. Does anyone know of a way to trace this?
The About this Mac function brings up a different battery serial number to the one that is on the sticker of the battery. Is this possible?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

ntel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Last Modified: December 09, 2009
    Article: HT3964
    Summary
The System Management Controller (SMC) is responsible for many low-level functions on Intel-based Macs. These functions include:
Responding to presses of the power button
Responding to display lid opening and closing on portable Macs
    Battery management
    Thermal management
    The SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor)
    Ambient light sensing
    Keyboard backlighting
    Status Indicator Light (SIL) management
    Battery status indicator lights
Selecting an external (instead of internal) video source for some iMac displays
It is possible that the SMC could encounter a problem that may cause unusual system behavior typically related to the symptoms described below. In some cases, resetting the SMC may be the only correct method to resolve the issue, however, an SMC reset should only be attempted after all other standard troubleshooting has been performed.
    Products Affected
    Portable Computers, Desktop Computers
    Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
If your Mac appears to be running normally but isn't responding, force the computer to shut down by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds. Note: You will lose any unsaved work in any open applications.
For Mac portables experiencing issues related to the MagSafe power adapter and/or battery, try:
Unplug the MagSafe power adapter from the Mac and the wall power socket for several seconds.
Shutdown the Mac. Physically remove and re-insert the battery (if it's removable) and startup the Mac.
If the issue is still not resolved after following the troubleshooting items above, an SMC reset may be necessary.
After performing normal troubleshooting, these symptoms may indicate that an SMC reset may be necessary:
    Fans
The computer's fans speed up quickly and remain at high speed.
The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated.
    Lights
The keyboard backlight appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have this feature).
The Status Indicator Light (SIL) appears to behave incorrectly (on Mac computers that have an SIL).
Battery indicator lights, if present, appear to behave incorrectly (on portables that use non-removable batteries).
The display backlight doesn't respond correctly to ambient light changes on Mac computers that have this feature.
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
    System Performance
The computer is running unusually slowly although it is not experiencing abnormally high CPU utilization.
    Video
A computer that supports target display mode does not switch into or out of target display mode as expected.
A computer that supports target display mode switches into or out of target display mode at unexpected times.

    Multi threadin with VC++
I have some problems with multi threading using the provider OraOLEDB.
When I try to execute a CreateCommand for a CCommand<CManualAccessor> in a secondary thread I have a failure inside OraOLEDB.dll.
There is no problem if I use the provider MSDAORA.
I found a property for the OLE DB provider named DBPROP_DSOTHREADMODEL and must be DBPROPVAL_RT_FREETHREAD,
    is the provider OraOLEDB FREETHREAD?
    Thanks for helping me.

    Do I have this right?
You want to start a Java application from the commandline, and this application creates multiple threads.
Each thread executes methods from the ProcessBuilder or Runtime classes, which opens a terminal (cmd) window, starts an external (non-Java) .exe program. The exe writes to the cmd window.
If that's correct, then you need to learn how to create a threaded program, and to use Either the ProcessBuilder or Runtime class.
Here's a how-to on creating threaded (concurrent) Java programs
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/essential/concurrency/index.html
and here's an article on correct use of the Runtime class

  • Not writing to NAS drive after upgrade to 10.8.4

I keep my iTunes media on an Iomega ix2-200 NAS. I have upgraded to iOS 10.8.4 and now cannot write to that disk - ie cannot store new media. I only have read priviledges. Anyone else had/ fixed this issue?

    Eric
Thank you for taking the time to post those links to informative articles.
In relation to the first article entitled "Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck"
I can confirm that i was not able to start in safe mode but was able to boot up in recovery mode and run disk utility. The only one i hadn't tried is fsck.  Please correct me if I am wrong, but if from what I understand by the article, this is to be used if I could not run disk utility, with which I have been able to do and to repair both the disk and permissions. But again, if I've missed the obvious from that article please correct me.
Te second article entitled "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" identifies troubleshooting that should be carried out in safe mode. However I am unfortunately unable to start in safe mode and have not been able to progress past the apple logo since this problem started.
Thank you for both links and for taking the time to share. If though I have missed something more significant in this regard I would appreciate your feedback.
    Many thanks

  • Having Multiple Issues with the 3.0 firmware update.

Just thought I would share a copy of my feedback here to see if anyone else is having some of the 5 issues I am having since I upgraded. I have been "using" (more like fighting with) the 3.0 update since its release. Here is what I sent to apple (most of it):
+I purchased the 3.0 update almost the day it was released. I have now used my iPod Touch a couple of months and I must say that there are some serious issues that need to be addressed, and soon. And a google search seems to show I am not the only one with problems, including those listed in your very own forums. So in order to make sure that I go through proper channels, I will list them here:+
+1) WiFi Connectivity. Since the upgrade, my iPod drops wifi connections for no apparent reason. Wifi says its connected and can't access pages. It seems to turn on/off randomly, even when I am only 5 feet from the router. I have followed directions for resetting the network, restarting my router, wiping the iPod and even did a complete restore of the 3.0 firmware. Still the same issues. These were not issues in version 2.2.1.+
+2) YouTube (or more aptly the application that plays YouTube videos) keeps hanging up. The progress bar that shows how much of the video has been buffered will go somewhere between 30 and 75 percent complete, then hang. the video will play to that point and stop. In order to get past that point I have to close the video app and reload the clip, then I have to move the location "dot" to where it stopped so it will buffer from there. If I do not move it, guess what, it stops at the same exact frame the second time around. Also the buffer progress moves forward, and then sometimes jumps all the way back for no reason. This was not an issue in 2.2.1.+
+3) Screen rotation seems to only work about 2/3 of the time. Sometimes in Safari, I will rotate the screen and it will still say where it was and my only remedy is to restart Safari.+
+4) Battery life is shorter. Now I know the batteries wear out over time, but a 30% decrease in battery life since the very day I installed the update is not coincidence. I have disabled push applications and even wifi, and still have a decrease in battery life with no change in use. Again, this was not an issue in 2.2.1+
+5) System hang-ups. Even with just the apps that come with the iPod (no 3rd party apps from App Store) I still get system locks that force me to power off the ipod and restart it. Even with almost all my ipod full of App Store apps and audio/video I did not have this problem in 2.2.1+
+I have read the forums, tried the apple posted fixes and still have not seen any of these problems resolved. My frustrations with the iPod Touch 3.0 upgrade have left me with a sour Apple taste in my mouth.+
+To be very honest, I am a PC person. Many have tried to convert me to Apple. The iPod was a business tool so I could carry videos with me to show prospective clients what I could do, even make an impromptu demonstration. I refuse to use AT&T as a carrier, so an iPhone was out of the question. Up until 3.0 I was quite happy with my iPod, now it is left home on my desk more than in a pouch next to my cell phone. After all the hype about Apple being so much better than a PC for reliability, service and stability, I cannot say that I am very impressed. It may be a long while before I try another Apple product.+

You probably did everything except upgrading your router or your router firmware. 3.0 is very sensitive to outdated router firmware and will exhibit the problems you have experienced.
+2) YouTube (or more aptly the application that plays YouTube videos) keeps hanging up...
See #1. YouTube functionality is highly dependent on WiFi connectivity.
+3) Screen rotation seems to only work about 2/3 of the time. Sometimes in Safari, I will rotate the screen and it will still say where it was and my only remedy is to restart Safari.+
Mine has done this a few times as well. A restart or reset usually corrects the problem.

There have been sporadic problems reported but I have never experienced anything like this. Restoring the iPod as new will rule out software issues.

Again, a restore as new will correct 99+ percent of these. You can always force kill an app by holding down the Home button until you return to the home screen. This will keep you from having to restart.

Apple doesn't post fixes except in the Tech Library. Search Support and you will find lots of helpful articles to correct issues.

This is really too bad. I've used PCs for years and really never have suffered too badly from the experience - but I'm a fanatic about keeping my OS updated, virus scans current, and firewalls working. And throw in malware scans as well. I've also found most users don't have a clue how to keep their PCs "clean".
A year and a half ago, I bought an iMac and could not be happier and less worried about all of the potential PC threats out there.
