Java OutofMemoryError with SGA_TARGET set

Hi,
I have activated the automatic memory management in my Oracle 10.2 installation according to those written in the following page, expecting my Java stored procedures will be able to use all the available memory without any explicit limits set.
http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/10gdba/week17_10gdba.html
I set my SGA_TARGET set to 800MB, however, during my tests where I was the only user in the system, I could never allocate than 256MB in my java procs and execution terminated with an OutOfMemoryError.
What else should I change to use the all memory that is available in the system for Java stored procedures?
Regards

Note that the 800M is shared dynamically between those possl not just java pool.
What is your physical memory size. Did you set any minimum for JAVA_POOL_SIZE or it is set to 0 after setting SGA_TARGET?
The best is to set them all to 0 and ensure that your SGA target of 800M will fit into the physical memory considering the memory required by the operating system and other running applciation on the system. If your Physocal RAM is 1GB and you set SGA target to 800M. It is risky.
BTW - how are you allocating the 256MB to your java procs? I ask because it may not even be related to the SGA_TARGET

    I had a generic record class that has a HashMap to hold the data fields (...)
    method called createRecord() for each record type which would populate the HashMap with the correct data fieldsI'm not sure I understand: are the contents of this field map the same between two records of the same type? Then yes, you don't need to clone the map per record instance.
    one thing that needs fixing is the fact that each time the createRecord() method is called I'm creating a new fieldMap to define the dataFields in the record class.Probably, but that will only get you a little bigger files; you won't gain an order of magnitude on the size of files. The problem for huge files is that as soon as their content is bigger than the available memory, you'll run into problems. A more radical approach if you need to address huge files is to process the records on the fly, and not load all records in memory. Of course not all algorithms or business logic can afford that...
    I know I could rewrite the code and create a class for each record type and declare the fieldMap static but I was wondering if anyone had any better suggestions The Record instance could receive and keep a reference to its RecordType instance, and ask the RecordType instance the DataType for a field's name. That way the RecordType encapsulates the map, and there's less risk that a clumsy other class modifies the static map.
    before I go rewriting a load of code.A load of code?!? Even with the idea of the static map, you only have to edit the enum type (well more accurately, each RecordType enumerated constant's createRecord() method).

  • Cannot set sga_target with db_block_buffers set

    Hello Oracle Community!
    I'm trying to set a sga_target on my Oracle 10g R2 database but it shows me the following message: Cannot set sga_target with db_block_buffers set
    What exactly's the impact on disabling db_block_buffers parameter? Is it better to do while the database's not being used?
    Thank you very much!

    This database uses SPFILE, how do I proceed to erase the db_block_buffer on it? The only way's using the CREATE PFILE FROM SPFILE command? Do I have to shutdown my production database if I execute it?
    ThanksYes, this is a major change, you will have to bounce. Probably the way to go would be to create pfile from spfile, copy that away somewhere safe, edit the pfile, shutdown and startup with the pfile. If you've made a mistake at this point where it won't come up, you can startup without the pfile if you need to, or keep trying to fix the pfile. When you are up, check that the parameters are what you think you did, then create spfile from pfile and bounce. Of course, if performance then goes wacko, you can go back to the saved pfile until you figure out what went wrong.
    You can try with the sizing you are currently using, then after running for a while use the advisors to tweak. Note that with sga_max_size it can vary by platform and configuration whether you use the difference between target and max, so platform determines whether you should make them the same (see the thread sga_max_size vs sga_target ) . If they should be the same, you'll have to bounce later when you tweak. Get familiar with the HIST views that record the self-tuning changes as they happen.

  • Can we use an overloaded constructor of a Java Bean with Session Tracking

    Hi Friends,
    If any one can solve my query.... It would be helpful.
    Query:
    I have a Java Bean with an overloaded constructor in it. I want to use the overloaded constructor in my JSP.
    1. One way of doing that is to use it directly in the "Scriptlets" (<% %>). But then I am not sure of the way to do session tracking. I think I can use the implicit objects like "session", "request" etc. but not sure of the approach or of the implementation method.
    2. Another way is through the directive <jsp: useBean>. But I cannot call an overloaded constructor with <jsp: useBean>. The only alternative way is to use the directive <jsp: useBean> where I have to write getter and setter methods in the Java Bean and use the <jsp: setProperty> and <jsp: getProperty> standard actions. Then with this approach I cannot use the overloaded constructor.
    Can any one suggest me the best approach to solve this problem ?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Gaive.

    My first reaction is that you can refactor your overloaded constructor into an init(arguments...) method. Instead of overloaded constructor, you can call that init method. This is the ideal solution if possible.
    As to the two choices you listed:
    1. This is OK, I believe. You can use scriplet to define the bean and put it into session scope of the pageContext. I am not sure exactly what you meant by session tracking; whatever you meant, it should be doable using HttpSessionAttributeListener and/or HttpSessionBindingListener.
    2. Agreed. There is no way that <jsp:useBean> can call a constructor that has non-empty arguments.
    Please tell me how it works for you.

    As soon as I open Firefox the message box pops up. Java Script Applications uninstal set. I have to click on it about 10 times for it to close. Then I can click on one thing and it comes back. I have shutdown my computer and restarted it several times. I don't know how to get rid of this message.

    This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
    Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Safe+Mode
    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
    In Firefox 4 you can use one of these to start in <u>[[Safe mode]]</u>:
    * Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * Hold down the Shift key while double clicking the Firefox desktop shortcut (Windows)

  • Interfacing java application with digital camera

    Dear all,
    I've a question and I need your help.
    I've my swing/javafx application and I need to interface it with a digital camera.
    How should I proceed? How can I understand which digital camera offers support for java integration?
    Do you have some model for me?
    Thanks

    I don't know anything about using Java directly with digital cameras. However I have a few observations. When you say you want to interface Java with a digital camera, do you mean you just want to display the image in a Java application? If so, you can use the software that came with the digital camera to download the images as *.jpeg (or whatever) to the hard disk. Then you can use Java to easily read the files from the hard disk and display them or move them to some other location. For instance, when you display them in Java, then you can then ask the user to fill out various textfields to go along with the image such as giving a title to the image or a description.
    If instead you want to write Java to grab the images from the camera directly, I think that's a bad idea. I imagine different digital cameras have uniquely written custom software to communicate between the digital camera and say, Windows 7 (I'm guessing). I doubt all the manufacturers have agreed upon a common way to communicate. Therefore if you take this route, you will end up creating a large set of Java programs to communicate with each model of camera. A maintenance nightmare.
    However, I have seen applications such as taking passport photos that appear to communicate directly with a digital camera wired to the computer which I imagine the vendor supplied with the application.

    Find a lawyer.
    As it appears, without evidence from you to the contrary that you are asking how to use Java to steal copyrighted content I would humbly suggest that you investigate, whether (a) the activity is illegal (b) whether you feel comfortable legally and ethically in helping someone steal content.
    Happily your actual Java related question is quite trivial and the fact that you had to to ask and couldn't either figure it out on your own nor find a suitable answer through searching suggests that you will be unable to provide the client with what they ask based on your current skill set. Aka the legality won't be an issue since you don't appear competent enough anyway.

  • How does Java Handle String Literals Setting to Null for Identical Values ?

    Suppose,
    String s1="Java";
    String s2="Java";
    Now if i am not wrong only one value(bit pattern) "Java" exists in the heap and both s1 and s2 are pointing to it.
    If i set s1 to null,
    s1=null;
    Won't s2 be affected (it is not getting affected actually..)
    What could be the cause for this ?
    Thanks in Advance.

    So is it something like ....

    s1                      0234234           "Java"

    is s1 is set to null :
    Variable         Memory Address   Value
    s1                      0234234           null
    s2                      0234235           "Java"
    No. In your model here, a variable's value is a String object. It's as if your entire house exists on my s1 paper, and an exact duplicate house with all the same contents exists on my s2 paper. In Java, no variable or expression ever holds an object. No value is ever an object.
    It's more like this:
    Variable         Memory Address         Value
    s1                      0234234           11223344
    s2                      0234235           11223344
    is s1 is set to null :
    Variable         Memory Address         Value
    s1                      0234234           null
    s2                      0234235           11223344and 11223344 is, roughly speaking, the "address" where the String object holding "Java" is stored.
    And in both your model and mine, "Memory Address" is not the address that the variable holds. Rather, it is the address that corresponds to what we humans have named s1 and s2 for our convenience.

  • Example code for java compiler with a simple GUI

    There is no question here (though discussion of the code is welcome).
    /* Update 1 */
    Now available as a stand alone or webstart app.! The STBC (see the web page*) has its own web page and has been improved to allow the user to browse to a tools.jar if one is not found on the runtime classpath, or in the JRE running the code.
    * See [http://pscode.org/stbc/].
    /* End: Update 1 */
    This simple example of using the JavaCompiler made available in Java 1.6 might be of use to check that your SSCCE is actually what it claims to be!
    If an SSCCE claims to display a runtime problem, it should compile cleanly when pasted into the text area above the Compile button. For a compilation problem, the code should show the same output errors seen in your own editor (at least until the last line of the output in the text area).

    Good idea, and since the line count is only a handful of lines of code to implement, I took that option. See the [line count|http://pscode.org/stbc/help.html#linecount] section of the (new) [STBC Help|http://pscode.org/stbc/help.html] page for more details. (Insert plaintiff whining about the arbitrary limits set - here).
    I considered adding line length checking, but the [Text Width Checker|http://pscode.org/twc/] ('sold separately') already has that covered, and I would prefer to keep this tool more specific to compilation, which leads me to..
    kevjava wrote: 1. A button to run the code, to see that it demonstrates the problem that you wish for the forum to solve...
    Interesting idea, but I think that is better suited to a more full blown (but still relatively simple) GUId compiler. I am not fully decided that running a class is unsuited to STBC, but I am more likely to implement a clickable list of compilation errors, than a 'run' button.
    On the other hand I am thinking the clickable error list is also better suited to an altogether more abled compiler, so don't hold your breath to see either in the STBC.
    You might note I have not bothered to update the screenshots to show the line count label. That is because I am still considering error lists and running code, and open to further suggestion (not because I am just slack!). If the screenshots update to include the line count but nothing else, take that as a sign. ;-)
    Thanks for your ideas. The line count alone is worth a few Dukes.

  • Starting Java Program with a bash Shell script

    Hi !
    I know this is a Linux query but I am putting it on this site to get different answers.
    I want to start my Java program with a shell script. Can anybody give me a proper script to start my Java program?
    I am using RH Linux 7.3 and JDK 1.4.
    Can I start the Java program without starting the terminal? Just like the Sun One Studio4 'runide.sh' script.
    Please help.
    Bye Niteen

    assuming you have your PATH and CLASSPATH variables set correctly, your script should look like this:
    #!/bin/bash
    cd <project_dir>
    java <class> &
    example:
    #!/bin/bash
    cd ~/projects
    java project1.main_package.MainClass &
    of course you could add some more elaborated stuff like compiling files before running the program, etc.
    if you dont like terminals, try running "nautilus" (it's like Windows Explorer). i never use nautilus (especially for running scripts), so i cant guarantee it will work, although i dont see why it shouldnt...

  • [Java 3D] with JOGL

    Hi,
    I'm looking for tutorial to use Java 3D with JOGL.
    I saw that seems to be possible on Java 3D website but I can't see any example (for Direct3D too).
    Else, does anyone know if JOGL 2 is supported or if it will be supported in future ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    Java 3D is a high level 3D API in contrast to the low level 3D APIs OpenGL, Direct3D, and the corresponding wrapper APIs like JOGL and LWJGL.
    The Java 3D engine can be run on any of these rendering pipelines: OpenGL, OpenGL/JOGL, or Direct3D. The default pipeline on Windows and Linux is OpenGL, on Mac OS X OpenGL/JOGL. If OpenGL is not available on Windows the engine switches to Direct3D. JOGL is used in Java 3D to avoid an implemention of the JNI/OpenGL-interface for Mac OS X as it is done for Windows and Linux. To choose OpenGL/JOGL on Windows/Linux the system variable 'j3d.rend' has to be set to 'jogl' and to choose Direct3D on Windows the system variable has to be set to 'd3d'. The default value is 'ogl'.
    From the Java 3D application point of view the rendering pipeline is not relevant. The public Java 3D API is independant of the rendering pipeline. Only a few Appearance attributes are not supported on Direct3D.
    So, all Java 3D tutorials, sample programs, or your applications can be run on all pipelines and can't be/don't have to be adapted to OpenGL, OpenGL/JOGL, or Direct3D. You don't have direct access to the pipelines from within your Java 3D application.
    I'm not aware of any advantages for running Java 3D on the OpenGL/JOGL pipeline. On the Direct3D pipeline a faster Java 3D rendering can be achieved than on OpenGL.
    JOGL 1.1.1a is the preferred release to run Java 3D. AFAIK JogAmp's JOGL 2 fork is not downwards compatible. I assume the current Java 3D release wouldn't benefit from it. I'm not aware of anyone working on a next Java 3D release which includes a future JOGL release. I started a Java 3D fork (JUniversal3D, not public yet) and I dropped JOGL as an intermediate API for accessing OpenGL.
    Oracle.Sun stopped all its 3D engagements (Java 3D, JOGL, Wonderland) and hasn't made any substantial anouncement about 3D rendering capabilities for its future JavaFX 2.0. So, it's up to third parties to supply 3D APIs for Java desktop and web applications.
