K5400dn - Ink Depleted Message

I have a K5400dn printer connected to an HP Pavilion laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium.  I have not used the printer in a month.  Before its last use, the magenta, yellow and black ink cartridges (all 88s) were all reporting low, but not depleted.  I turned the printer on today, and the magenta cartridge is reporting as "depleted" (message appears) and I can't print.  I replaced it with a new magenta 88XL, but the message wouldn't go away.  Just for the heck of it, I replaced the yellow and black with 88XL cartridges as well, and they are now reporting 100% full.  Still, the magenta cartridge is reporting depleted.
Before I go out and buy another magenta ink cartridge, does anyone have any thoughts as to why this might have happened?  I have never had problems replacing cartridges on this printer before, though I have never gone so long without it being used.  I'm just wondering if maybe the port for the cartridge is clogged up or something with dry ink, and that may be causing the error to be reported.
Thanks.

Well, I chatted with Ramiro in support today, and we got the issue resolved.  It seems the "trick" is to do a hard reset.
1. Turn off the printer.
2. Unplug all the cables, including power.
3. Remove all the print cartridges.
4. Hold the Power button down for 35 seconds.
5. Plug the power back in.
6. Turn on the printer back on.
7. After it goes through its initial warm up (stops making noises), insert all the printer cartridges and close the door.
8. After the printer goes through its warm up (stops making noises), hold the Power button down, press the Cancel button, and then release both (make sure there is paper in the printer). This should print a diagnostic page.
9. Reconnect the computer.
10. After the printer goes through its final warm up, everything should work fine.
The hard reset appears to be the key.

Open up a terminal (use spotlight to search for 'terminal')
Find the process ID of the HP Device monitor by doing
ps -eo pid, command | grep "HP Device Monitor"
The process id will be the number that is printed. Sometimes you may see two results, the correct result to use should print "/Library/Printers/hp/hpio/HP Device Monitor.app/Contents/MacOS/HP Device Monitor"
Then using the number you got from the first step, run the following command.
sudo kill -9 <pid>; sudo rm -rf "/Library/Printers/hp/hpio/HP Device Monitor.app/Contents/MacOS/HP Device Monitor"
You will be prompted for your admin password.

  • Disabling continual Non-HP ink cartridge message

Please help!I can see there have been many others with the same annoying problem, but I can not seem to stop the 'Non-HP Ink cartridge"message coming up on my computer constantly, even when I'm not printing anything! Whenever I am on my computer, the message comes up every 5 seconds. I can't get anything done!I tried unchecking the "Enable bidirectional support" box under "Ports", (as per one of the answers here) but it hasn't worked. I am wondering if I turned my computer off and on again, would that work? I have a HP Pavillion 23 computer.Surely I don't have to unplug my printer every time I'm on my computer and go through this rubbish whenever I need to scan or print something? This is beyond frustrating!Any help would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

Hi , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand that you are getting a continual Non-HP ink message with your HP Photosmart Plus B210 on Windows 8. I am sorry for the frustration but happy to look into this for you. Are you using Genuine HP ink cartridges? Or refilled/Non-HP ink? Please see this guide, Can I Refill The Ink In My HP Ink Cartridge? As well as this guide, Ink Usage in Inkjet Printers. In the meantime, please try the solutions within this guide, HP Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One Printer - B210a support. Also, the HP Print and Scan Doctor, might help as well. Hope this information is helpful, and thank you for posting!

  • Ink Cartridge Depleted message

I tried to print something on my OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus and I got a message that the ink cartridge was depleted and would have to be replaced for me to print anything.  But the last page I printed came out just fine, there was plenty of ink.
This seems ridiculous.  Why is HP deciding that I don't have enough ink left?  Why not leave that decision to the me?  If you want to warn the user that the print might not come out well, that's fine, but why isn't there a "print anyway" button?  That way, I could print until I, in my own opinion, think the cartridge needs to be replaced.  It sure seems like HP is doing this so that I have to buy a new ink cartridge faster.
Anyhow, I need to print something now and I can't wait until I can get to the office store and buy a new cartridge.  Is there any way I can fool the printer into printing anyway?  Or has HP just decided to make a task impossible for me, the customer?
    Thanks for any help.

The Officejet 8600 has separate ink supplies and printheads.  To prevent damage to the printhead ink is required, and the printer will block printing once the ink levels get too low.  See the document here for information on how ink is used.  The Officejet 8600 is an IIC printer in the vocabulary of that document.

  • I can't dismiss the 'low on ink' error message

    Hello all,
I have just refilled an empty 301 cartridge and my HP envy 4502 printer is telling me that I am very low on ink. This is to be expected, however the real issue is that my printer will not allow me to dismiss the error message, even though the mini screen has the option to dismiss it.
I wouldn't mind the error message if I could still print, so my priority is to find out how I can dismiss or disable this feature.
    Thank you for your time,
    Hayley

    Hi Hayley (@Hayleycsck),
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
The printer doesn't have the ability to disable the ink notifications on it.
What you can try is removing both cartridges from the printer, closing up the access door, pulling the power cord from the rear for 30 seconds. In that 30 seconds, press and hold the power button to drain all excess power from the machine, and then plug it back in. Wait for the printer to say the cartridges are missing or damaged and then insert the cartridge you didn't refill first. If the printer then changes to say only the one cartridge is missing or damaged try inserting the refilled cartridge again. Does it behave any differently?
If not, you may have to look into getting a genuine HP cartridge as opposed to a refilled one.
Hope this helps, have a great day

  • Replace Empty Ink Cartridge message flashes after the cartridge has been replaced

Printer is C61P50 All in One.
Has been printing black only, but this morning it said it could not continue unless the empty Magenta cartridge was replaced.   I bought a new one, installed it, and still get the same message.
Occasionally I get another about the light blue cartridge ink being expired.   That I can clear by hitting OK, but then I am back to being hung up on the supposedly empty magenta which I have already replaced with a brand new one.

  • How do I turn of the "Connect printer to update HP Instant Ink status" message?

I initially signed up for the HP Connected program but had to discontinue when I lost my internet connection. The Wi-Fi still works. I replaced my Instant Ink cartridges with the appropriate new non-Instant Ink HP ink cartriges. The printer works, but before each job prints I have to walk over to the printer the touch screen and depress the "OK" button to remove a warning message which state: "Connect printer to update HP Instant Ink status." How do I turn off this message so that I can print without having to respond each and every time? In addition to replacing the original Instant Ink cartridges, I have done "hard" printer restarts (with off and on switch),  tried restoring the factory settings via the touch screen system settings, turned off the internet connectivity and turned off all the Alert Settings in the HP Utility. Help!

Hello , Welcome to the HP Forums, and thanks so much for posting!  I'd like to help you with the message you are getting on your HP officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One printer to connect to the Instant Ink server.  What it sounds like, is that there have been pages printed since the printer last connected to the HP Instant Ink server. If you cancelled your account AFTER the printer's last connection to the internet, the printer would have no idea that the account has been cancelled. I'd recommend contacting our Cloud Services support at 1-855-785-2777 for further assistance. Hope this helps!

  • Ink Failure Message

    Hi,
I changed my ink catridges over and have been given the following message :
Ink System Failure unable to print. Error 0xc18a0401
Can you please tell me what this means and how I can resolve the issue.
    Many Thanks

    Hello @zoe123!
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!
I would be happy to provide some help regarding the Ink System Failure error on your Photosmart C5180.  The ink system failure error means something wrong with the print carriage in the printer.  There are a few steps that may resolve the issue!
The first thing I suggest is to open the printer and remove the cartridges, close the printer up and remove the power cable for 20 seconds. Plug the printer back in and it should turn itself back on.  Se if you get the error message without the cartridges inside.  If not install the cartridges and check.
Another thing I suggest is to plug the printer into the wall outlet directly if it is currently in a power surge protector or extension cord. This may sound silly but this will ensure the printer is getting full power and may eliminate any unnecessary troubleshooting. If the printer is no longer getting full power from the power surge or extension cord it may give false errors, have poor connection, paper feed issues and quality issues.
If you are still experiencing the issue I suggest taking a look at this document: A 'Carriage Jam', 'Paper Jam', or Error Code '0x610000f6' Message Displays.  I know the error code doesnt match yours but the steps in the document cover troubleshooting steps for clearing Ink system errors.
Please post back and let me know how everything goes!

  • Ink new, message says empty on Photosmart D7160

Photosmart D7160  I have changed to new ink twice, cleaned print heads, printed test patterns and alignment pages.
I have unplugged the power, turned off the printer, no help.  Message still says change cartridge.
Printer will finally print a page at a time if I click “continue” on the computer screen and click “ok” on the printer. The only ink used in this machine has been HP, bought fresh - not old ink.  Please help, I cannot print pictures at all.

    Hi,
I just have the same problem:
New HP original ink cartridges, with expiration date in June 2012, installed when getting the "cannot print", empty cartridge...blabla.
And the "cannot print" error still remains!
And, even if Black ink is not empty, no way to print in Black&White mode! (was possible before when a color was empty...but now impossible!)
I saw that the same error exists on various Photosmart models and looks like a microcode bug as some key stroke sequences are possible on some models to reset the wrong status register of the printer... but it seems that for D7160, no solution exists...
I'm now waiting for a call back of HP support. Let's see what's the official report stays: I hope that answer is not "purchase a new printer !". If this is the case, I'll move to another manufacturer, as this kind of problem is just coming from HP idea to to implement complex systems to ensure that end-user purchases new HP ink cartridges, even if not empty...
(But all manufacturer are doing the same, so in fact, no way to escape!)

  • C6280 All in One ink error message

    Hi there,
I have the HP photosmart C6280 All in One printer that recently requested that I replace the Magenta ink.  I did so but when I attempt to print I get the following message.
To print in color, instal the following cartridges:
     Magenta
To print with black only, click black only.  to begin printing on certain products, press the Resume button on the printer control panel.  the printer will replace colors wit grayscale.
To cancel, press the cancel button on printer.
If empty ink cartridge is not replaced soon, all printing will stop.
I have had this issue before and someone told me how to fix it but I can't find the original message or email for it at all but it work fabulous and I think it involved a reset.  Can anyone assist me with this, perhaps explain how to reset the C6280.
    Thank you

For resetting the printer ink system, try this document:

Removing the ink/power reset procedure can eliminate the cartridge message.
For missing colors in the output, try this document:

NOTE: step 8 has a hyperlink that is no longer valid. The cleaning of the printheads will affect your color output greatly.

  • C7180 Ink Failure Message

I have gotten the message of error # Oxc18a0206 and I can't find that anywhere on HP's website.  I don't have $20 bucks just for someone to tell me what this message means.  Please help.  It won't even make a photocopy or ready itself to print.  It says to check the manual.  I did and nothing addresses this issue.  Please help!

thanks for the help.  unfortunately it did not work.  i think this printer just refuses to print with so-called "expired" ink.  i don't use it that often and can't afford to replace 7 ink cartridges just to be able to print in black.  but apparently it makes you do that. ug.  i guess i have a paperweight now.

Received printer for Christmas. Installed fine. Prints fine.
Issue is pop up message telling me ink is drying to enable duplex operation. The pop up steals the mouse cursor and so effectivally prevents other usage of the computer while printing duplex. I don't need the pop up for every document I print let alone every page of every document.
