KT4 failure - slow demise

I am now on my 3rd mobo which have all experienced the same issue (note the first 2 mobo's i was using a 300w power unit which upgraded to 400w on advice from this forum)
Situation is that I install mobo, and maybe after second attempt (due to crc errors) get XP loaded.
All works ok for a few days, :P during which I slowly load apps to the system.
But after about 5 days, I get a hard disk corruption which steadily gets worse. So on each occasion I decide to reload XP.
This always fails due to hanging, file errors, crc errors etc. Works in DOS ok. But then after few hours trying machine decides to give up the ghost and all I get is 3 red lights on and 1 green:

From the manual it indicates this is a BIOS related issue. So I try resetting the CMOS, but this has done nothing.
I have removed the cards, again nothing.
Is there anything else I can do? On my 1st 2 attempts I've assumed it's a bad motherboard but A 3rd ONE??
My supplier has said it could be bad RAM, but if I replace the RAM I am not convinced I can get the mobo working again.

Can you explain therefore why it works ok for 5 days and I never get a report of overheating from any of my monitors.
If the temperature was high I could accept it but it weren't.
My question which no one has yet answered is whether my board as it stands is beyond repair and do i need to return it.
I am not going to spend hours shining the base of ali to find it still won't fire up.

System fully operational for 6 months. Yesterday Morning BSOD from Windows XP Kernel_Inpage_Error. Power down machine, and power back up. Boot Failure. Seems as if the FastTrak RAID controller isn't reconizing my Maxtor 120gig ATA/133 Hard Disk. Reboot a few more times, same problem.
Download PowerMax from Maxtor's website to determine what hardware is failing. For me to run these diagnostics, I have to plug the Maxtor 120gig onto the normal IDE channels. The drive is reconized by the Primary IDE channel (interesting). If the drive is reconized by the standard IDE channels, why isn't the FastTrak controller reconizing it? I run diagnostic checks on hard drive. It seems to pass the tests.
Out of curiosity, I plug my Maxtor 20 gig into the RAID channel to see if it reconized it, it didn't. So this leads me to beleive that the RAID controller isn't functioning properly. I tried it in all Master/Slave jumper configurations as well.
I saw in Promise Technologies FAQ that it is possible to access the data from a standard IDE channel, with RAID 0 mapped drives. In this case, mine is RAID 0 with no array. Just 1 drive to the EIDE interface on the KT4 ultra board. Is this possible? How is it performed?

Well, jumpers shouldn't be an issue. This confuration has worked for six months. RAID 0, and Windows XP installation. Flawless and fast, even. , just yesterday morning, Kernel_inpage_Error BSOD, and now the FastTrak Controller won't reconize any drives. All HardDisks pass the manufactures diagnostics, plus, the drives work on the Primary/Secondary IDE channels.

Partitoning a Hardware Raid

OK, I have already searched the net to no avail, im hoping someone here will be able to help me.
I currently have an external 300gb HD with 2 partitions, one is a bootable backup and the other is storage. I have recently realized that if this drive were to fail I would lose a ton of important data. I therefore have decided to create a raid setup. I am considering purchasing a Buffalo DriveStation Duo with 2 500GB drives in it. I would set this up in a RAID 1 array so I will have 500gb of usable space with a constant mirror image backup. My question is, can I partion the RAID into 2 partitions (as I have now with my 300 gb drive) one for a bootable backup and one for storage and still maintain the mirroring. In essence I want to have 1 drive with 2 partitions on it, and have the drive still be mirrored to the second drive.
First-Is this possible?
Second-Will I still be able to boot from the boot partition?
Three-If so, can having more than one partition on a raid create problems, such as increased disk failure, slower speeds, etc?

Well, the reason that I wanted to do this raid array is because I store allot of files on my external drive that are not on my internal drive, therefore if my external drive were to fail my files would be gone for good. I also keep a bootable backup that I constantly recreate on a seperate partition of the external drive. I thought if I create the RAID then I would avoid loss of data in the event of a disk failure.
As far as using my current drive, I was going to upgrade the amount of storage that I had and set up the raid system at the same time, If I buy 2 500gb drives I will have 500gb of usable space instead of 300gb.
I am however unfamilier with OS X RAID software, is this the same as a "software raid" as I have heard that a software raid is much slower than a hardware raid because it uses you computers processer to mirror data rather than using a raid card in the enclosure.
As for cost, I can buy this drive station duo (does raid 0 and 1, has firewire 800, 400, and usb, and an internal hardware raid) with 2 preinstalled 500gb sata drives for $300. I thought that this was a pretty good price for what I am getting but I am very uneducated in all of this and could be very wrong.
If, like you said earlier, I can partiton the drives and then create a raid (with the harware raid and not need a "dual raid card" or whatever) I would do that. Are you saying that I would only be able to have the 2 raids required if I use the OS X software.
I guess my questions boil down to this
1. Is the OS X raid software considered a "software raid" and is it slower than a hardware raid? If so, by how much?
2. If its not any slower, What materials would you recomend to build this considereing I want 500gb of usable space rather than the old 300gb?
Also, if its not slower where is this software in the OS, Disk Utility? And how would I use it?
3. If this software way is slower then I would still want to use the hardware method that I have been pursuing, can I still make the partitions in advance and then make 2 raids or will this not work with the hardware method?

I'd say you want separate partitions for atleast /, /usr,/opt, and /var. Probably one for /home, too. I'd definately isolate the filessytem where all of the work will occur onto it's own partition to reduce fragmentation on the others.

Will the new iTunes 11 still work for power users?

I've looked at the available screenshots, and I'm worried.
On the new iTunes page, Apple says, "Simplicity is a beautiful thing" — but I'm not so sure. I don't see any conventional list views, and I'm very worried that in simplifying it, they've sacrificed the control that so many music lovers like myself have come to rely on.

I disagree. Apple has added many, many features to iTunes over the years that target the power user. From smart playlists, to obscure things like ID3 tag version control. Basic music playing has changed a LOT. You couldn't even rate your tracks in the beginning.

They have a responsibility to their shareholders to do whatever it takes to maximize profit. We don't really know what the October iTunes looks like (much) but if they decide to dumb it down so it is easier for people primarily interested in using iPhones to use then from a marketing perspective can't blame them. We might not like it and might yearn for the the days when Apple really was computers, but those days are gone.
This is simplified to point of meaninglessness. There's an interaction between customers and product design teams. It may not be obvious from the outside, but there's still a give & take. What you're saying is in essence is, "Shut up and accept whatever happens," which is not a rational approach.
4) If Apple decided iTunes wasn't in their interest they would drop it in a flash. Where's iDVD? iDVD was something people were willing to pay for. They still would, but Apple isn't selling it anymore even though it is clear people in general have not given up on DVDs.
iDVD is not a good comparison, because of the vastly different switching costs. I used iDVD, but was fairly unaffected by its slow demise.

I need a new phone - what's a Palm OS lover to do?

I am an AT&T customer with a Treo 680 who has been using Treos, Handsprings, and Palm Pilots for more than a decade. I love my Palm Desktop. I love my DateBk6, and my ChatterMail, and my Pocket Quicken. But my Treo is simply broken and behaving unpredictably, and AT&T has discontinued them.
The Centro's keyboard and screen are too small for me. I don't want to switch to a more expensive (Verizon) or less reliable (Sprint) carrier to get a Treo 755p. I don't want to swith to Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, or IPhone because I don't own Outlook (why would I spend hundreds of dollars on Microsoft Office when I've got Palm Desktop and OpenOffice?). I can find an unlocked Treo 680 on the Web, but they cost more than I would pay under my AT&T plan.
Can anyone offer a glimmer of hope to a Palm OS lover who seems to be witnessing the slow demise of his favorite handheld operating system?

Macbook Pro 2011 extremely slow wondering if hard drive failure

Hello, I want to start off by saying I'm not a huge computer guru, so that is why I'm coming here first. My Macbook Pro worked very well for a year, and then it has slowed down drastically. I've always been a windows user so mac is kind of foreign to me, but I'm trying to learn.
Some problems I've encountered are 1. Extremely slow running whether internet related, or just an application. I have checked the activity monitor and nothing is hogging up my memory. 2. Spinning wait cursor (rainbow circle) when I try to do ANYTHING. It takes minutes to start computer once it makes it to home screen. The circle just spins for a few minutes. Even just web surfing it's there. 3. Battery drains from 100% to less than 20% in 30 minutes, which again is annoying. 4. When battery drains the fan turns on and seems to drain battery even faster. 5. I get a lot of random errors forcing shut down of programs. I have ignored this problem for two years by not using my laptop or using it very minimally, but I am going to be needing a laptop again for school and not just my iPad and phone so I was planning on taking my macbook to genius bar, but wanted to check here first since Apple is an hour away. Plus I want to be able to use the piece of equipment that I spent a decent chunk of change on. I used time machine to back up everything today. I know its not a space issue as I have 300+ free GB on hard drive. I have tried to read through similar posts, but its overwhelming so I came here to post my own question.
I ran disc utility and there were some errors, which were able to be corrected after a couple tries. Computer still slow though when trying to do anything and running rainbow circle.
In recovery mode I reinstalled OSX
I was finally able to install updates after completing the above that were not able to be installed before.

Eab, I feel your pain! I am replying simply to share my similar ongoing experience with my early 2011 17 inch MacBook Pro, running Mavericks with seeming ample hard drive space, [applications requiring less than 100GB, about 200GB data (total drive space of 500GB)] & 4GB RAM. (Disclaimer: I am not a wise or computer-savvy mac guru - simply a fellow traveler who has had a very similar set of problems - apps taking forever to load, rapid battery depletion & super overheated MacBook. While I am a Genius Bar groupie, getting to the Apple store is, for me, akin to an antarctic polar expedition (i.e. problematic). Having spent endless hours struggling with a similar issue, I offer you a synopsis of my struggle/experience.
STEPS TO DATE:
1.Installed several memory utility programs (Daisy Disk & MacCleanse) system
maintenance program to regularly and thoroughly empty application caches (Adobe apps & internet browsers being tremendous hogs), identify and remove language elements and other redundant space hogs, etc.   Result: Small, but real improvement when I forced myself to perform a "scan and delete" session every second major computer run (typically about 6-8 hours in length). However, this did nothing to help the problems regularly detected when I run the Disk Utility which almost invariably demonstrates disk permissions that need to be repaired and, with increasing frequency, has demonstrated actual disk errors that require restarting and walking through a disk repair protocol. I did bring it to the Genius Bar where they kindly reinstalled Mavericks which they could do in about an hour versus the several hours that doing this at home requires. This did identify that my RAM was, on fact, a limitation on the speed at which I could run certain apps.
2. My next move was to install an additional 4GB of RAM. I bought the new RAM on eBay for about $90 because, with 3 kids equipped with MacBooks & iPhones, I simply couldn't afford the official Apple RAM. I even installed it myself, with the help of a YouTube video. Result: Giant improvement in speed (starting up or switching apps. If I had realized how simple it turned out to be, I would have done it well over a year ago. Some minor improvement in the overheating problem, but persistent problems with disk permissions continually requiring repair and periodic disk repairs (using Disk Utility) required.
PLANNED FINAL INTERVENTION:
3. I am purchasing and installing a solid state drive (ssd) and simply chucking the original hard drive, after considerable discussion with my savvier mac friends. It has become clear to me that, sadly, every hard drive has a finite life affected by a variety of factors. I am, in fact, hard on my equipment - running multiple graphic apps simultaneously, transferring massive GBs of data between my laptop, time capsule and an array of hard drives. I will let you know how it goes, but can share that the decision to get a solid state drive followed many conversations with multiple Mac guru-types (in the hope of saving you similar painful tribulations). The cost varies according to the size of the drive, but $400-$500 would buy a reasonable starting size. I am waiting for Black Friday sales, myself. Amazon (where I will likely purchase the ssd) is already offering a number of pre-Black Friday deals. While I don't really feel like putting out that amount of cash, I reassure myself that a new drive will almost certainly solve the disk errors (with a solid state one offering more durability) & will help me prolong the life of my MacBook Pro by a couple of years hopefully. It beats buying a new Apple MacBook only three and a half years after investing close to $3k for this one!
I am certain that more experienced forum users could point you to software that could help defragment your drive or may be able to offer other solutions. I've simply had enough of struggling with burning thighs and head-banging behavior triggered by slow performance. I hope this is helpful to you in some small way. The war is not yet over, but I'm feeling good about the battle plan!

Run Disk Utility > Repair ... (not just repair permissions) while booted from another drive. If you have a stronger utility like Disk Warrior, that would be even better.
If you find that the ONLY way you can do this is by booting from the DVD, The Hatter recommends you establish an emergency drive or partition on a drive other than the Boot drive and use that in the future. It makes emergency Repair, backup, and cloning much easier.

Satellite M30-704 boot slow and 0203 failure IDE#2 message after drive replace

Hi,
two problems:
firstly after replacing the cd/dvd drive my computer will not now boot automatically and shows an '0203 failure IDE#2' message. I can then boot it but this all takes time?
second problem: before I can access any programme, a message reading: 'apdproxy.exe - Application Error - the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000006)' appears twice before I can continue and the computer is then very slow.
Can anyone offer any solutions? (ps - these two problems are not linked as they occurred months apart).

1.) I would say the BIOS cannot handle the new drive properly because of the wrong master/slave/c-sel settings but its strange that the drive runs.
I think you should check in the device manager the primary and secondary IDE channels.
The transfer mode should be set to DMA if available and device type Auto detection
2.) It seems the 'apdproxy.exe is a part of the Adobe Photoshop or similar application.
This software could cause an error. So simply try to reinstall this program

LG Revolution - Messaging issues, 4G failure, Freeze Up, Slow data, etc, etc, etc.

The LG Revolution is the worst phone I've ever had. If someone texts me that uses a service provider other than Verizon I only get 160 character limit, doesn't follow up with a second text message, just cuts off. This is so annoying to have to ask someone to resend the last part of their text message. I've called in for technical support and have not had the issue fixed. I am using the factory messaging that the phone came with and this has been happening since I purchased the phone.
The 4G fails all the time, I lose network all-together, all the time. Even when the 4G is working it's slower than slow. It's very frustrating. I live in a 4G area, none of my other friends have this issue (and none of them were a sucker and bought a revolution).
The Revolution constantly freezes up, I have to pull the battery at least once a day but usually more than that.
I want these issues to be fixed. It sounds like I'm not the only one having these issues with the LG Revolution.

Slow System and Failure Messages

I was working with adjusting audio in my 62 slide presentation, off the local server, had been clearing the cache, and saving as I went. After two particularly slow saves with lengthy "not responding" messages (we are talking 4-5 minutes until I recieved a response), I closed Captivate and restarted my computer. The following are all of the error screens.

When you write "off the local server" does that mean that you worked on the project file while it was located on a server? If yes, then that is most likely the problem. Captivate does not play nice with networks.

Slow Mavericks - internal hard drive failure?

I recently updated my iMac 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 4GB RAM to Mavericks. Before I was working on OS X Lion 10.7.5. Until the day I updated I never had any problems with my computer being slow, unless when I was using heavier applications or heavy files like in Adobe PS for example.
Since I've updated however, it often happens that the icons in my launchpad load slowly, my computer shows the spinning circle more often, and especially Microsoft applications (Word and Excel) take much longer before they are launched. I don't think I have to explain how this is bugging me, since we all like a fast computer. So I kind of regret updating.
I wanted to downgrade to 10.7.5 again, but this doesn't seem that easy even though I know my way around reformatting Apple computers…
So this is kind of a last option. Now I went to the Apple store in Belgium, and they told me that it could be a bug and that I should wait for the next version (yeah right…) or that it could be my internal hard drive was failing. Now I tried to find some information on how to recognize a failing hard drive, but I mostly bumped in to extreme errors. So I was wondering how to know your internal drive is failing? Second of all could it be failing all of a sudden? Since I hadn't had those problems before I updated. Thirdly is it possible that the next update would solve these problems, as they mentioned? Could a clean install help?
Anyway, I find it pretty weird, and there's a lot of different opinions and options, so I would like a more expert view on the problem, so get to a solution and an answer whether or not my disk could be failing, cause then I would like to get it replaced.

When I entered the following query in Terminal this is what happened:

Since I am doing jack right now and am solely typing this topic, the highest %CPU is about 2-3 percent and is "Safari web material". In the second place there is Safari with about 1-1.5%.

I was copying files to my external drive a few minutes ago, and my computer was reaaaally slow at that time. So I figured opening the Activity monitor and I took some screen shots:
The only thing I tried to interpret is the CPU tab. It shows 94.67% was inactive, and still my computer was being terribly slow… Is this normal and is this the right interpretation?

When our BT total broadband was installed, we had a power failure during the 10 day training period (back in June).
At the start of the training period, we had a speed of 3936 kbps downstream:

which was within the speeds we expected prior to installation (from the BT website for our phoneline):

However, since the power failure during training (June 2013) we have never managed to get close to that speed, even after consecutive weeks of the HH4 being connected. Our current ADSL stats are pretty representative of what we have achieved ever since:

DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 1344 Kbps downstream
The connection sometimes holds for weeks on end - other times it cuts out without any cause (from our end at least). For example, earlier today (after an uptime of 11680 mins):
