LAN versus WAN connection on roaming networks

Hello,
I have a HomePlug AV network in my house and I want to connect 3 AEBS in roaming mode.
I will use the HomePlug AV network as the backbone (DHCP and NAT services will be offered by another router) with all the AEBS in bridge mode.
Now, how do you connect the AEBS to the backbone? My understanding is to connect all the AEBS using the WAN port. Is that correct?
Cheers
Luca

Thanks for the answer.
Just a last question.
On the Designing Airport networks manual, they mention that one of the AEBS should be connected through the WAN port while the others should be daisy chained through the LAN port...
Why that? I thought that when the AEBS is in bridge mode the WAN and LAN ports are symmetrical.
Cheers
Luca

  • Can't Connect to "Roaming" Network

I have set up a new Airport "roaming"network.  I have an Airport Extreme as the primary wireless router attached to the Internet.  The Extreme is attached via ethernet cable to an Airport Express.  I believe everything is set up according to Apple's instructions.
When I have both devices on, their status lights are green.  However, if a device (iPhone, PC) is near the Express, it is asked to join the network and I have to re-enter the password.  It will never connect.
If I take that same device and get near to the Extreme, it will connect, no problem.
Also, if I unplug, the Express, everything is OK (except my wireless coverage is not good enough in the house).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Let's double-check your roaming network configuration just to be sure nothing was missed.
    Roaming Network Setup
Ref: See page 42 of the Apple AirPort Networks guide.
Setup the AirPort connected to the Internet to "Share a public IP address." Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing: Share a public IP address
Setup the remaining AirPorts, as bridges. Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing: Off (Bridge Mode) For each AEBSn in the roaming network:
    For each base station:
Connect to the same subnet of the Ethernet network.
Provide a unique Base Station Name.
The Network Name (SSID) should be identical.
If using security, use the same security type (WEP, WPA, etc.) and password. Note: It is highly recommended that you use WPA2 Personal for best bandwidth performance.
Make sure that the channel is set at least three channels apart from the next base station to prevent Wi-Fi interference.

  • LAN or WAN port ?

I have a AEBS that I connect (and disconnect frequently) to an existing LAN (ethernet based).
I'm testing my memory because I haven't used the AEBS in several months.
I believe I always connect my router to the AEBS using its LAN port. FWIW, the router in turn is connected to the DSL modem as well as another computer and printer. I have the AEBS set to not Distribute IP addresses.
The user manual and the Designing Airport Networks have me confused if using the AEBS' LAN port is the correct connection.
Should I use LAN or WAN port in this network design?
    Thank you.

You will want to connect your Internet router to the WAN port of the AEBS.

  • Why would i connect a external hardrive to the airport extreme and what is the difference between LAN and WAN gigabit ethernet?

Hey just wanted to know what is the reason i would connect my external hardrive to the extreme and what is the difference between LAN and WAN ehternet. I know one is local and other is wide but can someone explain in simpler terms.

Connecting a hard drive to the Airport Extreme makes it available to be shared across all the computers on your network.
WAN (Wide Area Network) is your connection to the internet
LAN (Local Area Network) is your internal (or local) ethernet connections (computers, printers, etc...)

  • Extending a wifi network, two WAN Connections

I'm in an apartment that has WAN connections dotted all over it (every room has at least one hard wired WAN access point - no configuration required to access the internet, all you have to do is plug in a router). I have an airport extreme (time capsule actually) set up in a room that is relatively central to the apartment. However between all of the rooms the walls are quite significant to the point that while I've used Airport Expresses to extend the network reasonably effectively for browsing (all rooms are covered), in any room that doesn't have the Airport Extreme in it, streaming content to an Apple TV results in unnaceptable quality. Move the Extreme into that room (WAN ports in every room), it's fine.
So what I'd like to do is either configure the expresses to plug into the WAN ports in each room but still all be on one wifi network, but instead of having to reach through two/three heavy walls to get back to the Extreme, then reach all the way back and transmit to the Apple TV, I could have the airport in the room just go to the internet straight through the wall connection that in most cases sits right next to it.
If expresses can't do this I am willing to invest in a new Extreme as well if that would help.
In short I want multiple airports, all on the same WiFi network but accessing the internet from whichever airport has the strongest signal. Also if I'm in a room a long way from the primary Extreme and I want to stream to the Apple TV from a laptop, I want it to bounce just through the Airport in that room, not have to go all the way back to the primary Airport.
The layout of the apartment doesn't really give me much scope for doing anything with connecting by ethernet cables unfortunately.

All those WAN ports run back to a main switch somewhere in the building.. and that connects to a router that gives you internet access..
I have never heard of a place that gives you WAN outlets in every room.. how many can you use at once??
Talk to the building services IT admin as they might be happy to help you out.. the multiple units can only connect back to the main switch.. the danger here is so does everyone elses network.. if you take away the router you lose the protection.. if you have the router in place .. you cannot use the WAN ports as LAN. Each router protects the local LAN network from access by Joe Blow down the hall.
But if the system is complex enough you can be assigned a block of IP addresses on a vlan.. and use the building infrastructure as your own personal LAN.. with good security..
Only the buildings admin can do that for you.. otherwise don't even think about it.. you will expose your network to outsiders.. or you will need extremely complicated vpn which means replacing all your apple routers anyway.

  • Connect to two networks, ethernet(LAN w/o internet), wireless(w/ internet)

so i'm trying to connect to two networks, a wireless and a wired one
the wireless(which connect to an access point) is a network which allows me to connect to internet, and the wired(regular router) one is a small home local network, which does not connect to internet.
if i just have the wireless one on, unplug/disable wired one, i can connect to internet just fine, but if i do plug in ethernet cable, then all of the sudden i can't connect to internet anymore.
in my Network Coonections window, it does show that the wireless one has "Access to Network and Internet" while the wired one has "Access to Network only". I'd assume that the computer is smart enough to find its way to internet, but apparently not.
is there a way to set a preference, so vista tries to find internet conncetion thru wireless first, before go on to the wired network?
I konw this is technically possible, because on my mac, i can set in such way that it takes certain connection first
    thanks in advance

I think I am getting it but still no joy.
On the WiFi connection to FIOS Router I have manually set metric to 1.
On Same PC in Ethernet I have removed gateway and set a metric to 10.
Before I did this connection to Internet was very slow when the Ethernet cable plugged in and Interface Enabled. After removing gateway and setting metrics access to Internet AOK.
I have working Homegroup, network printer but no Internet access from Hardwired PC.
Cannot ping FIOS router @ 192.168.1.1 from hardwired PC. Destination host unreachable.
NMAP Quick Scan 192.168.1.* never sees 192.168.1.1
So, I'm still not routing properly.

I've a few other things connected to the AE such as computers, ipad, itouch, etc, and have never had a problem connecting these once I've entered the mac address into the AE. Can anyone help me with this please?

have you made sure that the network setting in the system preferences is set up to use dhcp? if not i would try changing it so that it shows that it is getting its address by dhcp

    You're welcome.
If she has full reception and connection with the same cell phone carrier where you don't - with you both using a SIM card provided by the same carrier while in Norway with an unlocked iPhone, then make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby to have a diagnostic test run on your iPhone.
In the interim, I would contact this cell phone carrier in Norway to ensure your iPhone is provisioned properly. They can run a reset for your account that will require powering your iPhone off, so call them with your wife's iPhone for this.

  • HT4260 Airport extreme and time capsule connection order in a roaming network

I plan to create a roaming network with my current Airport Extreme as the primary device connected to the internet and the new Time Capsule as the secondary device in Bridge mode. The connection between AE and TC will be wired (ethernet). Then I plan to connect the PC that needs backing up to the Time Capsule with an ethernet cable. Apart from the PC-backup functionality, I'd like to use the Time Capsule as a central NAS-device in my network. All other wired network devices that need access to the NAS (Apple TV, Xtreamer) are currently connected to the primary Airport Extreme with ethernet cables. My question: is there any reason why I should consider reversing the setup order, i.e. making the Time Capsule the primary device connected to the internet and the Airport Extreme the secondary device? Would this have a positive or negative effect on Time Capsule functionality and performance in the network? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Your Gen3 Extreme and all TC are gigabit.. as long as you connect with the required standard cable to have a gigabit connection between the two, there will effectively be no difference. In a home network you will struggle to saturate gigabit no matter what you do. Although the difference between the two configurations is really very small.
General rule is keep whatever is using the highest bandwidth closest and directly connected to whatever it is using.. shrug.. in this case you can follow or not.. it is more a guideline.

  • WAN connection to 1 specific LAN RV320

    Hi,
I have one cisco RV320, I use 2 wan connections with different isp.
It is possible to go out just with one ISP to one of the 4 LAN ports ?
I need one specific LAN port to have internet connection just from a specific wan1 or wan 2, and the other lan ports to use load balancing feature.
    It is possible?
    Thanks

    Hello,
The RV320 has a feature called Protocol Binding that will allow you to link a single or a range of IP addresses on the LAN to use a specific WAN connection for an specific protocol.
Here is a document on how to configure such feature:
    http://sbkb.cisco.com/CiscoSB/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=d6c17b6ee53141f59ae03c6defeb20cb_Dual_WAN_Configuration_on_RV320_Router.xml&pid=2&respid=0&snid=4&dispid=0&cpage=search
If what you are intending to do is to force, lets say a range of IP addresses on the LAN to only use WAN 1 as the outbound connection for all the traffic, then you want to configure the protocol binding as follows:
    Service = Any
Source IP: Beginning of the range or single address
to: End of range or singe address
Destination IP: 0.0.0.0 (Anywhere on the internet)
to: 0.0.0.0 (Anywhere on the internet)
    Interface: WAN 1
Status: Mark the checkmark to enable it.
Please remember that you can Bind the protocols via IP addresses and no specific LAN ports.
    I hope this helps

  • My iMac will not connect to time capsule used as base station in my roaming network

I have a network that is made of up a Time capsule as a base station and 3 airport express's used to extend my wifi coverage. It is setup as a roaming network with each express hardwired to the base time capsule. I have a iMac that will not connect to the base station, it will only connect to one of the remote express's. The iMac is next to the base satation. Other mac notebooks, iPhone or iPads all connect to the base station when they are near it. Only my iMac will not connect to it. Any suggestions as to why this is happening or steps I can take to fix this.

    Hello FoxFamilyVA
Check out the first article below to go through some troubleshooting options to get your iMac to connect to your Time Capsule. I would go through and remove it from the list of known networks that you join and then add it back in. I would also recommend that you try and create a new Network Location to see if there is an issue with your current configuration.

  • Max IPs in a DHCP range for Roaming network?

Setting up an AirPort roaming network comprised of a dozen or so AirPort-Extremes all connected via a Fast Ethernet backbone.
The Master base station has a Public IP on it's WAN side and is Set to 'Share a Public IP address' and DHCP - but it seems no matter which network prefix I choose for the LAN side, I can not create a DHCP range larger than a single Class C. Is there a way to give out more than 254 IPs? Or can you have a single roaming network with multiple base stations set to DHCP?

Is there a way to give out more than 254 IPs?
No, as the "main" router, providing DHCP server service is the limiting factor here.
Or can you have a single roaming network with multiple base stations set to DHCP?
This may be possible, but NOT with the Apple routers. When configured as bridges, as required for a roaming network, both their NAT & DHCP services are disabled.

  • Roaming network without effect

    Hi guys
    ¨¨
I need some help. I have 2 airport extremes (A1143, one of them is 1 gen and the other is 2 gen) and have made a roaming network in my 120 m^2 appartment, but i dont really feel a difference !
in the utility on my imac i have same ssid name, same password, same protection and same channel settings (set as automatic as apple recommend)
One of them is DHCP distributor and the other is in bridge mode, I know that.
They are separated form each other at 7-8 meters. I have tried to turn my network down and turn it on again, no really effect.
I can however see that my wireless devices are connecting to the router with bridge mode when that is nearest and same with the other router.
Still its not ok. What is the problem ?
The 2 routers are not placed near metallic surfaces or anything.
I suspect that maybe my wireless phone are disturbing the network. The situation is that my wireless phone is situated in the same room as my router with bridge mode but there is only interference when the phone is calling and ringning ? or also when its in stand-by and not ringing ??
    Thanks in advance

I must be the only guy in the world to have a set up like this. The Ethernet in our building, of course carries the internet signal all over the building to not only other Airport Extremes but to computers (mostly PC's) that are hardwire connected to the internet  and to our local ethernet network via that ethernet cable.
When I ran  the cat five cable from the Quest modem to the WAN port on the first Airport Extreme and then ran the Ethernet cable that supplies the whole building via various routers "patch panels" and "switcher" etc. out of that same Airport Extreme  LAN port it didn't work. There was no Internet signal to the hardwire ethernet network throughout the building.
Before that supply cable (supplying the whole building and AE's with the internet) was hooked directly up to the Quest modem and now that it's back in place I (on my lone MAC in the building) have internet back again via the hardwired ethernet.
Why could I not use the AE LAN port to supply hard wired ethernet to the rest of the building? Why must that wire, apparently, be connected directly to the Quest modem? That same modem has four "out" ports. One supplies the whole building with said ethernet (which I temporarily disconnected to hook into the AE LAN port, hoping that the Internet signal would go from Quest modem to AE#1 WAN port, THROUGH that AE#1 and out to the rest of the building via the AE#1 LAN port, but that doesn't seem to work)
    What am I missing?
I've got internet to the whole building: hardwired via the ethernet and wireless if one is willing to start up at each new location with a restart as described above, but roaming. Nope.
