Leaking un-nated packets.

Following problem is occuring to a couple of our css running version 07.40.1.04.
The system is running in redundant configuration active - standby isc interconnected.
The css are configured to handle mutiple url to be loadbalanced to a farm of 8 servers.
At public side we use redundant-vip at the server-end redundant-interface (also def.gw for these servers)
For certain systems outbound connection through the css is needed eg. public DNS server, CA, ftp-updateserver, ...
For these servers a (nat-) group exists; and acl are permitting this outbound traffic.

The problem is when some of these server perform requests to the a public dns server their packets remain un-nated.
These packets don't travel far, our IDS and firewall detect and halt them, however they won't be able to be routed throught the internet as they are private.
This all causing the request never to be answered. As far sniffing gives more info, appearently these are all udp requests, can this be the cause ?
Any ideas why this happens, or what the cause might be. Any suggestion about how digging further into this would be helpful.

We experienced similar behaviour for our CSS load balancing SMTP servers. These servers were NATed on CSS with VIP address on CSS using a group. Once in a while we use to see packets on Internet firewall with server's non-nated IP ADD. On close inspection we found out that when the CSS service pointing to the servers use to go down the CSS use to act as a router and route any packets coming from the SMTP server to its default gateway of Internet Firewall. The SMTP service on the servers was flapping between up/down state due to code problem on the servers.
You may want to see if CSS Service pointing to the servers is up or down when you see the non-nated IP ADD on Firewall.

    When server communicate via interface connected to active CSS - all is OK!
    But when something happen and server switch to second interface (traffic must go across standby CSS via trunk to active CSS)...to client come not NATed packets (with real server source ip, but not VIP), and application not see response.
    I was try to create group for destination service with the same vip 192.168.32.7 and its work. But server need real ip of clients for correct working and groups is not decision.
    All master and slave virtual-router and redundant-interfaces on CSSes are all right.
    In ACL on vlan 100 on CSS1 i'm not see any hitcounts from ip server to ip client.On CSS2 there are hitcounts on content hits value.
    How else i can to see is response packets come from server to CSS1?
    Why does it happen? and how correct problem?

    from my point of view you need to cinfugure unconditioned bridging on the CSSes (see http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/contnetw/ps792/products_configuration_guide_chapter09186a00801ee746.html#1072797)
    explanation:
    Without undcondition bridging the CSS2 will forward the traffic directly without letting CSS1(active CSS) giving the chance to do the necessary changes definied in the content rule.

  • NATing the default route address

    We're NATing the destination addresses, using the ip NAT outside source static command and sending the NATed packets to a specific address through the defaut route (192.168.3.2). Does anybody happen to know if we can use the native address of the default route (192.168.3.2) in the default route statement (ip 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.3.2) and it will get statically NATed or use the already NATed default route address?
    I believe the NAT command will only work on the destination addresses that are in the packets and since the default route address will not be a destination address in a packet, it will not work on it, but am not sure.

    You are translating let´s say the outside address 192.168.1.1/24 to 172.16.16.1/24
    ip nat outside source static 192.168.1.1 172.16.16.1
    In order for this to work, you would need a static route sending traffic for 172.16.16.0/24 to the next hop of the router where 192.168.1.1/24 originates (let´s say the router has IP address 10.10.10.1):
    ip route 172.16.16.0 255.255.255.0 10.10.10.1
    Now what is your next step, what do you want to accomplish ?

  • Leaking netbios packets over dial up connection

    I have used a verizon USB internet card for over 1 1/2 years and have just recently started having issues. After about 6 minutes I am disconnected from the internet. After several hours on the phone with verizon tech support, I was informed that my computer was "leaking netbios packets over my dial up connection." When I called apple the guy I spoke to told me he had never heard of such a thing. Does anyone know what this means and how I can fix it???

    In Windows, right-click on the hard drive
    Highlight TCP/IP and select properties
    Click on the Advanced button
    Go to the WINS tab and select "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"
    Click OK to accept changes and close the window

  • Marshelling Web Service Response Memory Leak

    I believe I have found a memory leak when using the configuration below.
    The memory leak occurs when calling a web service. When the web service function is marshelling the response of the function call, an "500 Internal Server Error ... java.lang.OutOfMemoryError" is returned from OC4J. This error may be seen via the TCP Packet Monitor in JDeveloper.
    Unfortunately no exception dump is outputted to the OC4J log.
    Configuration:
    Windows 2000 with 1 gig ram
    JDeveloper 9.0.5.2 with JAX/RPC extension installed
    OC4J 10.0.3
    Sun JVM version 1.4.2_03-b02
    To demonstrate the error I created a simple web service and client. See below the client and web service function that demonstrates it.
    The web service is made up of a single function called "queryTestOutput".
    It returns an object of class "TestOutputQueryResult" which contains an int and an array.
    The function call accepts a one int input parameter which is used to vary the size of array in the returned object.
    For small int (less than 100). Web service function returns successfully.
    For larger int and depending on the size of memory configuration when OC4J is launched,
    the OutOfMemoryError is returned.
    The package "ws_issue.service" contains the web service.
    I used the Generate JAX-RPC proxy to build the client (found in package "ws_issue.client"). Package "types" was
    also created by Generate JAX-RPC proxy.
    To test the web service call execute the class runClient. Vary the int "atestValue" until error is returned.
    I have tried this with all three encodings: RPC/Encoded, RPC/Literal, Document/Literal. They have the
    same issue.
    The OutOfMemory Error is raised fairly consistently using the java settings -Xms386m -Xmx386m for OC4J when 750 is specified for the input parameter.
    I also noticed that when 600 is specified, the client seems to hang. According to the TCP Packet Monitor,
    the response is returned. But, the client seems unable to unmarshal the message.

    Many thanks for your help.  This solved the issue for our .NET code, however the leak is still present in the report designer.  I was also wondering if you could help further: because of the limits on the java memory process is there a way to ensure that a separate java process is started for each report that is loaded in my report viewers collection?  Essentially the desktop application that i have created uses a tab control to display each type report, so each tab goes through the following code when displaying a report and closing a tab:
    Is there a way to ensure that a different Java process is kicked off each time that I display a different report?  My current code in c# always uses the same Java process so the memory ramps up.  The code to load the report and then dispose of the report through closing the tab (and now the Java process) looks like this:

    I use web services a lot and I sympathize with your issue. I
    struggle with similar issues and I found this great utility that
    will help you confirm if your webservice is returning the data
    correctly to Flex. I know you said it works in other applications
    but who knows if flex is calling it correctly etc. This utility is
    been the most amazing tool in helping me resolve web service
    issues.

    Once you can confirm the data being returned is good you can
    try several things in flex. Try changing your result format to
    object or e4x etc. See how that plays out. Not sure where your
    tapping in to look at your debugger, you might want to catch it
    right at the result handler before converting to any collections. .

    Ok, so i think i'm beginning to understand this now after several hours..
    Below is my setup now, and it works, but the thing is that it ONLY works from nets that are actually configured on interfaces.
    What i mean by this is,
    i want to reach ONLY the ip 172.18.254.37(ADM net) from ANY adress on 172.19.0.0/16 (EDU net)
    so naturally i try and change the prefix list to:
    ip prefix-list 1 seq 5 permit 172.18.254.37/32
    ip prefix-list 2 seq 5 permit 172.19.0.0/16
    But this doesnt work, i would be very grateful if someone could explain why and how to get around it..! i dont want to define every subnet on 172.19.0.0/16 and at the same time leave all of the 172.18.254.0/24 network open.

  • Route leaking from VRF to Global on same router with VLAN interface

    I would like to do some route leaking from VRF to Global and Global to VRF on the same router. Here is an output of the config:

    So what I want is to import 192.168.227.0 /24 into FVRF and import 10.0.0.0 /24 into the global routing table.
    I though I could do that config but it is not possible:

  • MPLS VRF Routes Leaking

    I am designing network to deploy MPLS L3 VPN services for 2000+ branch locations of 1 customer.
    Cisco 7600 series router is used as PE along with FWSM that points towards Global Routing Table (Internet Gateway).
    Customer is requiring the access for internet along with VPN services to all the 2000+ locations.
    What is the best solution to prefer that meets the requirements & also avoids the security loopholes ?

    you could do one of the following ways to implement Internet access for L3 MPLS VPN
    1. using a separate PE interface in global routing table: in this case the FWSM and an interface in the PE/PEs will require to be in the the global routing table to have the Internet access and then you can inject that route to the VRF/VRFs
    2. Internet access using route leaking between VRFs and the global route table: by using this method you will need to configure a static default route with a next hop as an Internet gateway in your case the FWSM, reachable through the global routing table, this VRF default route need to be injected/redistributed in  the PE-CE routing (MP-BGP) to provide the outbound Internet connectivity to your  VRFs.
    inbound traffic from Internet will require either NATed VRF or a static routes from the global routing table points to the VRF interface
    3. the other method is the used of shared service: with this method you need to put the Internet service FWSM in its own VRF then you can control the import and export between the Internet VRF and other VRFs through import/export of the VRFs route-target values

    i'm pretty confused here. It seems i can't decrypt my file using the statements below.

If yes, where did the plaintext file is stored (or is it possible there's some kind of memory leak here) or if no, what should be done?

  • Leaking subscribers between VRFs

    Hi,
    I have two VRFs, lets call them internet, and customers_1.
    PPPoE, and IPoE subscribers terminate in the customers_1 VRF, I am wanting to leak these addresses into the internet vrf.
    I have configured the relevant import and export statements, and see the routes, however the routes are advertised into the internet vrf with a next hop of 0.0.0.0 thus, they do not appear in CEF (seen via sh cef vrf interent), and traffic is not forwarded.
    Can anyone let me know how I would achieve this.

    I do not have other alternative solutions, the only one i can suggest is by using Access-list forwarding (ABF) on incoming interface from internet. The good thing about this is that you can have one ACE for pool of your customer's ip address. Put summarized destination address and point to the VRF as the destination. It is called ABF VRF select. This cause the ingress packet from internet with destination of vrf customers_1 ip address will be forwarded using VRF customers_1.

  • How to help 2 NATed hosts get a second channel without server?

    Hi All,
    I'm working on a videoconferencing project. With the help of a relay, the direct connection channel has been setup between two NATed hosts.
    The question now is how to move it forward to setup a second channel without the help of that relay?
    My thought is to set a deal using the first channel to specify on which ports that both hosts are going to use (assuming NAT wont change the port number when the packets going through).
    It seems no one can get packet from the other on that second channel, any hint?

  • Help with TCP out-of-order packets Wireshark capture

    Hello everyone,  we have a bit of an odd issue. Can you take a look at the attached capture file and tell me what's broken? Please change the file extension from .txt to .pcapng and open with Wireshark. 
    We have a major issue where clients cannot retrieve data from the server at 10.10.7.27.
    Server is behind the firewall at 172.18.123.4 which is configured to NAT the traffic coming through.
    Please advise.

    It's actually from anywhere.  The DNS resolves the website address to a global address.  So regardless of the source (inside or out), you hit the firewall and get routed to 10.10.7.0 network.  The firewall's LAN interface shares the same VLAN as the DMVPN head-end router's LAN interface.  From the DMVPN head-end router, it goes over the DMVPN cloud (i.e. back over the internet) to our office in Florida where this site is being hosted. 
    The capture I grabbed was by SPAN port between the two LAN interfaces showing transactions between the firewall's LAN interface and the server's IP address on the 10.10.7.0 subnet.
    Site uses HTTPS and we have other servers in the same subnet (10.10.7.0) that are accessible in the same manner.  I did SPAN the ports for another webserver and did see a lot of TCP OOO and re-transmissions however not as bad as this one. 
    I do have a theory, please feel free to correct me.  Request comes in on the WAN interface, gets NATed by the firewall and sent to the DMVPN router, router encrypts the packet and places it on the wire, once the remote DMVPN peer receives the packet, it decrypts it and then sends it out it's DMZ interface connected to another application firewall. This firewall checks the packet and then sends it to the web server hosting the content.  The process is reversed for reply traffic. On top of all this, the content is served over HTTPS therefore more encryption/decryption. This seems like too much handling of the packet to me?  When the source computer sends a request, it simply times out or spends too much time within our own network causing the source to resend the request?

    My computer will not boot up.  My son suggested that I boot up holding down the Command and S Key until text stops scrolling on the black screen.  When command line prompt appears type in fsck -fy and hit Return.  After several minutes I get  error message.  "Bad Self ID packet".  I ran the same check 3 different times and I get the same error message.
    What is a Bad Self ID packet and what can I do to fix it.  Thx   melmfrommn. 

    There are a few options to try.
    Option 1
    Restart the computer while holding down the Option key.  This will tell the computer to look for bootable drives.  If it finds your normal startup disk, select let, then click the right pointing arrow to boot up the computer.  Now open up System Preferences> System> and select your normal Startup OS as the default startup disk.
    Option 2
    Reset your PRAM.  Press and hold down the Command Option P R keys while starting your computer.  You will hear the startup chime.  continue holding down those keys until you hear the startup chime a second time.  Release the keys.  If the computer restarts, you will need to reset your Date and Time.  It might be time to replace your PRAM battery.  The G5 iMacs require a 3 volt CR2032 lithium watch/camera battery like below:

    You can find these batteries at Walmart, Kmart, Target, most local drugstore chains, for between $3-$5, or at Radio Shack for $12-$20.
    If you have any G5 iMac model EXCEPT the iSight version, you can probably do the battery install yourself.  Watch this video on upgrading your iMac's RAM to show you how to remove the back of your iMac, if you don't already know how:

    While you have the back off, use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out the vents at the bottom of the iMac, the fans, and anywhere else you can.  Also inspect the 28-30 capacitors on the logic board.  Look for dark spots, if they look puffy or swollen, or leaks.
    Option 3
    Reset the SMC by removing all cables (USB, Firewire, Ethernet, Modem, Power cord) from the back of your computer.  Let it sit for one minute.  Press and hold the power on button on the back of the iMac while plugging in the power cord.  Release the power on button.  Count to five, the press the power on button again.
    Option 4
    Place your original, came with the iMac when purchased install disk, into the slot on the iMac, press and hold the C key while pressing the power on button on the back of the computer.  (If you have upgraded your OS from when you purchased your iMac, example your iMac came with OS 10.3 installed, and you're now using OS 10.5, then use the OS 10.5 Retail Install disk that you had used to upgrade your OS instead of the original, came with the iMac disk.) 
    Continue holding the C key until you see the OS starting to load.  DO NOT do an OS installation.  At the top Menu bar, select Utilities or Utility, and pull down to Disk Utility.  On the left side of the window that opens, select your normal OS drive.  (If you don't see your normal OS drive listed, then the drive could be dead.)  Click First Aid at the top middle of the window if it isn't already selected.  Click Repair Disk from the lower right area of the window.  When that is done, click Repair Permissions to the left of the Repair Disk button you clicked earlier.
    When that is done, quit Disk Utility.  From the top Menu bar (I think its under Utilities) select the Start Up Manager, and choose your normal boot volume as the startup disk.  Restart the computer.  If successful, and you've rebooted from your normal startup disk, eject the install DVD/CD, and you're good to go.
