Lost 10.3 server OS disk, now what?

Hi all,
I just inherited an old G4 Server that had a 10.3 server OS on it (the OS license is taped onto the machine itself, so if I have the installer, I can get it registered/operational as we already have a license), along with about 20 eMacs and ibooks to run off of it. Unfortunately by the time I inherited it, the root drive was so badly corrupted (read: corrupted partition, catalog B-tree, volume info, everything.. very bad. major crash) I had to nuke the drive and temporarily install the standard Tiger OS on it, just to get it to boot, and backup the data drive.
I've looked everywhere, but the original installer disks for the 10.3 server OS is nowhere to be seen, and no one knows nothing. The computer lab is in such a mess sometimes I feel like I want to bury my head underground.. but that's another story.
I'm even afraid to call Apple to even ask if they would be willing to sell me a backup copy installer for such an old OS so I can get this server up and running again. Has anyone had this kind of issue (lost archaic OS, asking apple for a replacement disk)? if so, how much do they charge typically for idiocy such as this?
If the replacement disk is expensive, then I can try to beg the financial people to let me buy a 10.4 Server off eBay or something, but given the budget constraints, I'm looking for the cheapest possible solution to the problem...
the client computers are currently running off of another server until we figure this one out, but it'll be a matter of time before they boot us off...
Any word of wisdom is appreciated..

try calling apple support and see if they'll send you the media for 10.3 server. otherwise, find it used on amazon or elsewhere online. if you have a local apple rep. or reseller, that may be worth a shot, too.
10.3 server sort of sucked, though. if you can at least run 10.4 server on it, do so.
don't even try 10.5 server for anything but the lightest loads. depending on the specs, it may not even install on the g4 machine you have.

  • Server is setup, now what?

As I posted last week I am in the throes of transition from 2 stand-alone edit stations to 3 clients and Final Cut Server. My server is a Mac Pro xenon Tower that I have put a 120G SSD drive into the empty optical bay to be the boot/app drive running Snow Leopard, FCPServer, and FCP for ingest and occaisional FCP duties. The server has 4 2T drives in the internal bays setup as 2 Raid 1 storage devices, The clients are 27"iMacs on a gigabit ethernet network.
Now what do I do? I have the client software on the iMacs and can log in and see some assets. What I need to be enlightened on is the actual workflow. How do I start a "production"? How to I transfer existing FCP projects and the various elements into the server? How do I make them into a "production:? Where exactly do I put them? The amazing thing about this process is that there seems to be so much that is assumed by whoever wrote the documentation, and there is no info on how to actually USE the FCServer. If there is online documents about this I would appreciate any guidance. Thanks......

In more detail I guess I having a bit of a brain **** about the structure of FCPServer. The folders created for Library, Media etc. What goes there and how do I get it in? For example I have a bunch of video clips and stills that were provided by a client. How do I get them into the FCPS system?

  • LR5 - lost connection to picture files. Now what?

3 days ago I followed the advice of Barbara Brundage from Elements Magazine and deleted some files from Elements Organizer which were causing people problems. I had previously used organizer for my pictures but LR adopted the jobe about a month ago. Today I upgraded LR from 5.2 to 5.3 and then began editing pictures. When I tried to delete a picture a message came up to the effect that the file could not be permanently deleted from the disk since it could not be found. It offered the possibility of erasing the file permanently still. I chose that and the picture disappeared  and a small box flashed by which said that the file could not be found. The number of files in the folder didn't change.
How do I reconnect to the picture files which are in a stand alone hard drive - And - will the editing I did today be lost of subsequently be connected to the appropriate picture files/
    Thanks for your help
    David

    thank you for your reply.
I do understand that the pictures reside in a library and that what I see in LR is the picture with whatever repairs have been added. Those repairs don’t necessarily reside with the picture.
I understand that if  I move files outside LR that they will be invisible to LR in which case they should have a  red ! beside them. No such red , or any colour symbols appear. I have not  moved any file, files or folders using Organizer or by simply re-locating them on the drive such as by dragging and dropping to a new location. Nor have I changed any file names.
I thought that ONE of the responses I had in the forum said that when I deleted the file from the disk that it would be deleted in Organizer. The author really said, I believe, that the file would be deleted from the source drive but would continue to appear in Organizer in which case a marker would show that the picture was no longer available.
I am editing files which LR sees since the green switch is on. The edits alter the pictures and so I assume that when I “export" them, they will carry the  alterations to the new location.
The problem  remains that when I try to Delete a picture file in LR, instead of the box I used to get which gave me the choice to delete it from the disk and then did that when I selected that choice, I NOW get the message I reported previously "The files are on a Volume that does not support Trash. Would you like to Permanently delete them?”   I select “Permanently delete”, the box closes and another flashes on and off. It says “File could not be found”.
The file Does disappear from the film role beneath my editing screen in LR so perhaps all is well. My problem  is that there was a  change in the process of deleting from simpler to more complex (slower) and confusing since LR can’t seem to find the file it is deleting at this point.
So, is there a way to return to the out of the box process which was clear and quick? Did I do something or might I have done something which caused LR to arbitrarily change its ways?
I reiterate that there are no signs that LR can’t see the files nor have I changed any file names or positions.
    Thanks for your help.

  • OS X Lion Server upgrade *failed*, now what?

The installation process got as far as registering a message like, "Upgrading Services, failed". The only option was to click the Lion icon for reboot. That, I did, then I couldn't find the 10.7 Server Admin Tools, which I had to download separately. The "Open Directory" part of the Server Admin UI does not have the *expected* start/stop button and the service is stopped.
It would be nice to have a post-upgrade program to checklist what went well, what needs fixing with pointers to resources. It's possible none of my services programs got upgraded.
I got an email receipt with a link to "Report a Problem" which turns out to be mostly a hole for getting lost, but at least it got me here to present feedback.

But do we need all the blows and wristles?
Yes.  Lion Server out of the box does not allow for complex custom configurations short of manually editing text configuration files, which is an ironic step backwards from SL Server considering Apple's commitment to ease-of-use GUIs.
Instead of improving the admin tools that were available with SL Server, they simply removed too many of them.  That would suggest that they've given up on the market for business servers to focus on the market for toy servers for home use, which is a bit disconserting considering that Lion Server's security is also woefully lacking out of the box.  It's hard to figure how any IT professional could take it seriously.
The Internet is a dangerous place to play with a server.  Apple's quest to simplify OS X Server with Lion has resulted in a server package that is dangerously simplistic.  If Lion Server becomes popular for home use, I expect to see a rapid expansion of botnets.

  • I lost my serial number...now what?

I purchased FCS 1, and my mac crashed. Now I have the install discs, but I can't locate the serial numbers. I can't find my FCS box either. So no manuals.
Is there any way I can prove that I have and own these discs? Also, if I registered the product at some point, can I retrieve the serial numbers?
I have some big projects here and I need to get final cut up and running.

Basically, apple will tell you to take a flying leap. I had a similar situation but was able to find my serial number. I even bought my FCS directly through them and registered with them. My question to Apple is why register it with Apple if they arent going to keep track of your info. Adobe has a customer support line and keeps track of every bit of software that you purchase.
I'm no thief but I live in the real world, computers crash, you move and lose information. The license agreements basically state that you do not own the software. Well if you dont own it isnt it up to them to keep track of it?
The only advice I can give you is create a .txt of all your serial numbers. Put them into a folder and upload them to your .mac account or if you have a ftp server, put them there.
I'm never registering another piece of software with apple. Its not in our best interest.

  • Lost device password BB9900 bold. Now what? I have full data backup on laptop.

Hi can someone advise what I should do after 10th wrong device password? what will happen ? I have data back-up on laptop. Can I reload all?? Thanks . Ashutosh

Ashutosh, I do not know if you may have tried this nor whether it will work but on my Bold 9900, within 'setup', there is a feature called 'Blackberry ID'. There is an option to 'change your password'. Maybe if you try this and answering your recovery question, you maybe able to get back up and running again. Bob

  • I thing my ipod touch 4G software is lost and it doesn't open now. what shall i do?

my brand new ipod-touch doesn't open and i think i have deleted somehow the operating system.what shall i do?

Have you tired to start it with the power switch at the top? If that will not work - try a reset.
Reset the iPod by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

As far as I know, Apple Stores do not sell machine specific system discs.
Replacement System Discs can be obtained from Apple's Customer Support for a nominal fee. You'll need to have the model and serial number of your Mac available.
Since you are not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html

  • I need to reinstall the system software on my older iMac. I have lost the system disks, though... so now what? It had 10.4.

I need to reinstall the system software on my older iMac. I have lost the system disks, though... so now what? It had 10.4. We moved, and I have looked everywhere. Am I doomed to find a way to buy it? Can taking it into the Apple Store fix it? Will it be expensive THERE? I've already saved all of the files I want off of it.... I just need it to work now.

You've lost me on why you need to reinstall Tiger, when you already have all the files you wanted (which means Tiger worked perfectly fine). If you want to upgrade to Leopard, that's a different issue: your Mac needs to meet the minimum system requirements for that, which you can easily determine.
If you just want to get a replacement set of Tiger install discs, you can try calling AppleCare and see if they're able to send you a replacement set, and if not, you'll have to buy a new set yourself. You can get them on eBay, Craigslist, and HardCore Mac (http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/), although they sell it for ridiculous prices.

  • Lost sound, uninstalled sound card (forum advice) now what?

I lost sound on my system and automatic driver repair did nothing, another forum said to uninstall the sound card and reinstall. I uninstalled and now what? where do i find the card to reinstall. the card is IDT High Definition Audio CODEC.
Also having trouble installing updates, constantly get the error message 80070BC9

    BDF2, welcome to the forum.
Here is the Software and drivers page for the computer.  The only driver that is available for the sound card is for Win 8.0.  Therefore, you should use the original driver.  You can have the program scan you system to find the appropriate driver, also.  Click on "Check now" and install the additional software.  Then, follow the instructions and the program will scan your computer for driver updates or for missing drivers.

It is true that the only way to sync your Mac with iCloud is to upgrad.  You need to be running OS X Lion 10.7.2 or higher in order to sync your Mac with iCloud.  At this point, you can upgrade directly to OS X Mountain Lion from the version of OS X you are now running (10.6.8).   You can purchase and download the Mountain Lion upgrade from the Mac App Store for $19.99.  After upgrading you will see iCloud in System Preferences.  This guide explains how to sync your Mac with iCloud after upgrading: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/mac.html.
Once all your devices are signed into the same iCloud account and you have turned on your iCloud data syncing, you will be able to keep them all in sync using iCloud.  You will still have to sync with iTunes to manage your iTunes media such as music, movies, podcasts, etc.  You will have the option to either continue backing up automatically with your computer when you sync with iTunes, or to back up your iOS devices automatically to iCloud every 24 hours (as long as they are connected to wifi and your chargers).

  • TS1967 When trying to recover a lost iTunes library file, the programme moved all the normal contents of iTunes folder to the desktop. Now what must I do?

When trying to recover a lost iTunes library file, the programme moved all the normal contents of iTunes folder to the desktop. Now what must I do? There is no iTunes Library.itl file. On the desktop it is labelled iTunes Library.xml. Several others files have appeared there too including iTunes Music Library.xml
Before I can use the programme is it necessary to take another step?
    Thanks for advice.

Don't worry. I'm all for caution. I guess I should have asked a little more about what steps you took while trying to recover your lost library?
The permissions thing may be a red herring, but if there is a problem with file access rights to the designated media folder iTunes has been known to place files on the desktop instead since it can access this location. The most common cause for such problems is working with a folder on an NTFS drive via a differnt account or on a different computer. In the normal course of events folders created inside user profiles have limited rights for other users.
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Normally the iTunes folder will be created at <User's Music>\iTunes with the media folder inside it. The library files should all appear in the same place so your comment about there not being an iTunes Library.itl file is confusing. Is it just the case that the .itl extension is hidden? The two .xml files makes sense from the above and indicates that the active library is not in <User's Music>\iTunes, but you have a recovered file from when it was.
If, in fact, the situation is that your desktop is acting as the main iTunes folder, and contains the library file, Album Artwork, iTunes Media and (optionally) Previous iTunes Libraries folders, with all other content being inside the iTunes Media folder, then it should be relativly easy to rearrange your into the correct shape and move them to the correct location.
If things are more complex, with something other than a library folder containing a media folder, then reestablishing the normal order is more complicated. The iTunes consolidate function is used to bring copies of files stored outside of the media folder into the media folder. It may sometimes be needed as part of the process of tidying up, however it leaves behind originals. There are circumstances where there isn't room for two complete sets of the media files on the same drive which is why I suggested the script might be useful as it produces the same results for the library without leaving the originals for manual clear up.
I think before you do anything however, we should get a clearer picture of exactly what is where. Could you perhaps take a screenshot of the desktop and post it here? Take a look at this post on making a split library portable. The same techniques I outline there can be used to lick your library into shape, it is just a question of working out which to use in which order for the best effect.
