Mail is using wrong outgoing server

We just changed hosts for our company email and website. I set up a new account with the new info for incoming and outgoing servers. When I try to send Mail tries to send using the old outgoing server, despite the fact that I entered the new server info when I set up the new account in Mail.
When it bounces back I get a pull down menu where I can choose the right server and then it works. I don't want to delete the old account as I'd loose the emails in it. Is there a place where the computer stores a list of servers where I could delete the old server name?

Mail tries to send using the old outgoing server, despite the fact that I entered the new server info when I set up the new account in Mail.
Because you didn't make the new account the primary one, so Mail chooses the current primary account and it's mail server settings. You'll need to go to Preferences > Composing and select your new account from the pop-down list as the "Send new email from:" account.
Is there a place where the computer stores a list of servers where I could delete the old server name?
Yes. Preferences > Accounts > Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):. Click on the pop-down menu and select Edit Server List… to remove servers.

  • Apple Mail Repeatedly Using Wrong Outgoing SMTP Server

    Hi
SInce upgrading to Mavericks my Apple Mail is extremely confused.  It is trying to send emails using SMTP servers to other accounts.
For example, one of my Gmail accounts will send using a outgoing server from my university email.  The sender name works out correctly, but it is tedious to sort through finding which outgoing server will work and provide the right user name.
My me mail keeps asking which outgoing server to use.
Is there a one and done solution to this?  I'm already trying to get used to Outlook and Thunderbird, but frankly did used to like Mail.

I solved this with the following steps:
Change the "Outgoing Mail Server" to "None"
    Compose a new email
    Click the send button
A window will come up that allows you to select the outgoing mail server (this is the same window that appeared when Mail was originally having connection issues to the mail server)
Select the outgoing server you want to use (in my case, my company's exchange server) and send the email
You should now find that the "Outgoing Mail Server" has been set back to the one it should be, and all your mail is actually being sent via this server.

  • ICal invite replies Use Wrong Outgoing Server

    Hi There,
    I have 3 e-mail accounts in Mail.
When someone sends me an invite it goes into iCal no problem. If I try to reply to the invite through iCal then it works ok on 2 of the e-mail accounts but not on 1.
i.e. If someone sent the invite to account 1 it is ok.
If they send it to account 2 it is ok
but account 3 is the problem.
With account 3 I get a pop-up message from Mail telling me "Cannot send message using the server xxxxx". The server to which it is referring is the server to be used for one of the other accounts.
It won't even work if I select another server from the list.
    Any ideas?
    powerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Thanks for your help.
I'm not entirely sure I understood your instructions though.
I went into Mail preferences and went to the accounts section. I clicked on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop down box and then went to 'edit server list'.
From here I was able to delete 2 servers that I do not use and the other 3 servers listed were listed against the correct e-mail addresses and accounts.
I then send an e-mail from each of the accounts to make sure I had it all set up right and each e-mail account sent and e-mail and received an e-mail without a problem.
Then I went back to iCal to accept an invite and it tried to send it using the wrong outgoing server for that e-mail account and I had the same problems as normal.
    Any other ideas?

In Mail Settings Lookup, my outgoing server is not listed correctly.  How does it get changed

Yes, how does it get changed in the online "Mail Settings Lookup"  It is wrong there, but right in my mail preferences.  My Charter Account is locked on my computer.

Yosemite Mail deleted all my outgoing server settings. Any way to retrieve them?

What is your email provider (e.g Gmail, Microsoft, Yahoo, Comcast, AT&T, etc...), and what email client software are you using (Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Outlook, etc)?
It's likely far easier to just Google the correct settings for your mail provider and recreate the outgoing (SMTP) settings.

  • Mail does not use correct outgoing server

    Problem
Mail in Mavericks (and also IOS6 snf 7) does not use the outgoing smtp server associated with the account being used. This results in either a failure to send or mail being put into the wrong "Sent" folder.
    Background
I have most of my non-icloud mail pulled down to a home server from which my laptops and ios devices access various accounts using imap. The local home server also provides smtp and relays all mail to my ISP. Recently I have been switching from an old home server (Mac Mini) to a new one (Raspberry pi running the debian Raspbian version with fetchmail,  Dovecot and postfix setup).
While making the changeover I had access to both the old server and the new server enabled on my laptop. Naturally the majority of the settings (Name, email address etc) were the same although the name and address of the server to be used for both incoming and outgoing mail were different. This seemed tp work fine for incoming. However when I tested outgoing mail the copy that should appear in the "sentt" box  went missing. This usually indicates some mistake in the setting of the sent mail folder on the accounts but this all checked out.
I eventually found the missing outgoing mail intended to go through the new server in the sent box on the old server. Further trials showed that no matter what I did the outgoing would always default to the old (and therefore first set up) outgoing server.
Deleting the old account and the old outgoing server of course should cure the problem and will eventually be the solution for me when I kill the old server. But i wanted to get to the bottom of the problem in case it reappeared in other contexts. Checking the "use only this server" box produced failure to send rather than the correct result.
Trialing various alterntaive settings showed that the problem occurs when there are two outgoing servers with the email address in the settings and the user name on the outgoing server name being the same. I had assumed that changing the description field would distinguish between the various settings; however this did not work. Changing the Name Field did work eg by putting (O) after my name.
It appears therefore that mail selects the outgoing server on the basis of email address (with the full name included) and user name (trrespective of the actual server or the Description that shows in the smtp server listing. In some ways this is logical but it produces problems in the context I have described and would also be a difficulty if you wanted to use an alternative server when in a different location.
I have trawled support and elsewhere for any thing similar. Lots of mail problems (don't get me started on the way icloud loses outgoing each time you edit the list!) but I have not found any posts on precisiely this point.
IOS devices seem to have similar problems, but a quick attempt at a similar solution does not work, and I cannot be bothered  to test the options. I will simply clean them out and put in the new accounts.
    Advice
Grateful for any comments or advice from people who have encountered similar problems and whether my diagnosis if correct. Have I missed any obvious corrections that would clear this up. I do not know whether this is a Mavericks issue or also appears in earlier OSX versions.

    Peter,
Where ever the Sent and Trash folders show in the Sidebar, highlight first one, and then the other, followed by clicking on Mailbox in the Menubar, and choosing Use This Mailbox For, and choose the function.
Keep us posted on your progress.

  • Yahoo Biz mail can't send - Outgoing server "(null)" failed

I recently purchased the iPhone and can't get my Yahoo biz mail account to send mail, it only receives. I have read the other thread on this topic and reported it via the Apple feed back site but I still have not seen anyone post a reply that has found a solution for this other than using POP3 which then limits folder access only to the inbox. Does anyone have a success story for this issue and a way to solve the problem? Please reply if you have any info. Thanks!

Try cwmx.com as the host name on outgoing server under mail. I don't use Yahoo biz mail , but it solved my problem last week

  • Yahoo mail can't send - Outgoing server "(null)" failed

I can not send ONLY from MY Yahoo email address. When I try to send a message is says "Outgoing Server '(null)' failed."
I have tried changing my password to one without numbers or characters, deleting the account and re-adding, restoring the iPhone. Nothing.
Here is the wierd thing: any other Yahoo account works just fine. My wifes yahoo address works perfectly, I created a new one and it works perfectly as well. It is just my address. Has anyone else had this problem?

I have the same problem. The issue is IMAP vs. POP. Setting up the bizmail account with the pre-loaded "YahooMail" link in the Mail setup options sets up your bizmail account with IMAP settings. While this allows you to see all your storage folders from the server, for whatever reason, you can't receive mail as the incoming server "null" fails. I can send mail just fine, but I can't receive. Now the work-around was to set it up as an "other account," not using the YahooMail link. Then you have to select "POP", then use "pop.bizmail.yahoo.com" (ignore the quotes) for the incoming mail server with SSL turned OFF. For outgoing, you use "smtp.bizmail.yahoo.com:465", turn ON SSL. The 465 designates the correct port, so you should have that in there. This will allow you to both send and receive, but will NOT allow you to view your storage folders. The account would have to be set up as IMAP in order to see those folders, but I have been unsuccessful in getting that information from yahoo business support. They are as useless as the "geniuses" at the Apple Store. Hope this helps!

  • MAIL problem - telefonica smtp outgoing server

First sorry this is on the safari board. Couldn't find the one for mail!
I am on holiday and the ISP I can find (public) is Telefonica. I have tried the standard smtp outgoing server (smtp.telefonica.net) but even on this I keep getting a "address rejected by server'. I've tried different servers but I think telefonica is fairly tight about that sort of stuff. I think the problem is a password and username is needed however I can't get these.
Is there any way around this, perhaps setting up a personal smtp server, or someway of bypassing their outgoing mail restrictions? This is my first mac so I'm a little bit stuck...
    hope you can help!

Ok fixed it. For anyone else having the problem of a not being able to send outgoing mail with a public ISP do the following.
    1) setup a gmail account and record password and username.
    2) Set up a new server in mail: "mail/preferences/accounts/outgoingmail server (drop down)/edit server list"
    3) add a new server by clicking on 'plus'
    4) server name is 'smtp.gmail.com'. check 'use custom port' and enter 587. check use ssl box.
    5) in Authentication drop down, choose password then enter your gmail username and password.
All this worked for me after fannying around with loads and loads of far more complicated things! Hope this helps someone like it did me!

  • Mail is using wrong certificate file

I have a signed cert that has been imported into server admin. It shows correctly as being signed. There is also a Default certificate as well. So server admin shows one self signed cert named Default, and my signed cert. I have configured mail to use my signed certificate from the drop down cert list which shows both Default and my signed cert however when my clients connect they are being handed a self-signed cert with the same name as my signed cert. My thought is it is handing out the cert from before it was updated with .crt file. How can I correct this?

Server Admin has a habit of incorrectly writing this information into imapd.conf.
    Edit /etc/imapd.conf and change:
    tlscommonname: Default
    to:
tlscommonname: your.hostname.com (as used for the certificate)
    Also make sure that:
    tlscertfile:
    tlskeyfile:
    tlscafile:
    point to the correct file.

  • Can't send mail; wrong outgoing server?

My mom has having problems sending mail. I am personally a windows user so i don't know too much about the mail program or the OS in general (i'm using my dad's account). Originally the error message was something short about checking the server settings. Now the message is:
Cannot send message using the server smtp.mac.com
The server response was: 5.7.1 <[email protected]>... Relaying denied, try authenticating.
Use the pop-up menu below to try a different outgoing mail server. All messages will use this server until you quit Mail or change your network settings.
Message from: [my mom] <[my mom]@mac.com>
send message using: [drop down bar for selecting alternative servers]
(edit message) (use selected server) (try again later)
What exacly is the problem? she said she didn't change any settings or anything like that and it started this afternoon.

According to the .Mac web site 10/02/2006
EMail was unavailable for 3 hour(s) to some .Mac Members.I suspect your Mom's email is working normally now.

  • Mail on iPhone sometimes uses wrong outgoing mail account

I have selected my .me email account as the default for outgoing email messages. But my iPhone does not always use that account. When I hit the "compose" icon a new blank email message opens up and my .me account always appears in the "From:" space. HOWEVER, when I then enter the recipient's email address my iPhone sometimes, but not always, changes the "From" account to my Gmail account.
There are certain recipients for whom it always uses the correct default outgoing address (my .me account), and there are other recipients for whoom it always changes the outgoing account, but I haven't been able to identify a common thread that would tell me why it is making the change for those recipients.
I have an iPad, which is set to use the same default outgoing email account, and have not had this problem on that device. Nor on my iMac.

It switches to Gmail for some Gmail recipients, but not others. And it switches to Gmail for some other recipients who use non-Gmail accounts, but not for others with non-Gmail accounts. Haven't been able to figure out a pattern. It does seem to treat each recipient the same each time I send to them (in other words it doesn't use the default email for a certain recipient one time and then the Gmail for that recipient another time).

  • Apple Mail is using Wrong default Email

Apple Mail is now displaying the wrong default email address in my inbox and I have my correct business email selected as my default.  I can't figure out how to correct it or why it is happening.  For example the mail in this inbox is sent to my petersonsales.net email, but it is displaying as if sent to an alternate address used for ministry:
It appears my ID is set to my company, and I'm not sure I did this either... just things are a little wonky with Yosemite...

I don't think you understand...  The outgoing servers are set correctly, and even the ID appears correct when you click on the incoming mail name, but it is appearing as a different email address in the list TO field.  See attached

  • Apple mail won't save outgoing server port...? Odd symptom.

Each time I close Mail, the SMTP port reverts to 25. I can enter a new port, but Mail won't save that port info. I have to re-enter after opening Mail each time.
    Symptom goes like this:
Open Mail, then when sending 1st message after opening app an error "cannot send mail using selected server" appears. I need to go into the settings & switch the port from the default port that is displayed (25), to 3535. After doing that & clicking ok, closing the window, the password dialog box appears & mail sends just fine. Every other message from that point will send.
Close Mail, then reopen. Have to repeat same process again.

Two weeks later (after post, above)
I Solved the Problem - I reinstalled Mac OSX 10.6.6 (It was rather painless)
My Mail is working again. Safari now also again remembers passwords.
Also, my Aperture's Mail export also works. (Mail is no longer grayed out).

  • Mail does not recognize outgoing server for Forwards or content other than text

Since installing Mountain Lion Mail has been erratic.  It generally will not send mail that I Forward nor will it send mail that includes links, graphics photos, etc.  It sends original mail consisting of text only without a problem.  When I try to Forward mail, or send new mail that includes content over and above text, I get the following result:
None of the options will send the mail.   If I “Try With Selected Server”, I go into an endless loop – click on it, get the same Cannot Send… window back.  “Try Later” merely puts the message into my Outbox where it sits – and sits.  It will sit there for days if I let it.  If I sooner or later try to send it, I get the above Cannot Send… window again.  If I “Edit the Message”it still will not send. The Connection Doctor tells me that the mail account is logged in and connected without a problem.  If I “Edit SMTP Server List” I get Mail Preferences – the edit SMTP list window – and no SMTP servers listed – blank list.  Yet the Mail account has the proper iCloud SMTP server in its set-up.  Moreover, text only emails send without a hitch.  I can readily send them before, during and after the “Cannot Send…” window pops up for an email that has other than text included in its content.
Interestingly, if I put the problem email into my Draft mailbox and then go online and log-in to my iCloud account, I can then open the email in iCloud online and send it – and it sends without a pause or quibble. Why won’t it send through Mail on my computer???
NONE of this happened in Lion.
